I didn't realize this tradition was still a thing. I thought it ended more or less in the late 70s/early 80s at latest. Speaking as a woman, I would never expect or ask my father or my parents to pay for any future wedding of mine. If they want to contribute, GREAT! but right now, I'm totally expecting for my future husband and myself to be paying for it.

This topic hits home for me, I got engaged last year and currently am in the process of planning a wedding for the end of this year but my parents are on a fixed income, my father said he would contribute but till this day he hasn't been able to help. I don't feel comfortable asking my fiances parents for money since it is traditionally the bride's parents that pay for the wedding, and they haven't offered to help me not one time. This has been a stressful ordeal as at least 90% of the costs are coming out of my pocket alone. My fiance gave me some funds but even so when I think about how this is going, it is not all I perceived it to be, sometimes I cry but I gotta do what needs to be done to make my dream wedding happen. When I have children I will do whatever in my power to help them and their spouse have a great wedding.

If a wedding is stressing you out this much then either you should wait and save up or have a small intimate wedding, even if it's not at all the dream wedding you'd want. Remember, you still gotta live after the wedding.....
I honestly don't think that that tradition holds fast anymore. Given the high costs now associated with weddings, the bride and groom should have primary responsibility for funding it but I also think that it's great for both families to also assist in whatever way that they could. It doesn't necessarily have to be any grand funding- it could also be something small but meaningful.
My dad payed for my entire wedding as both me and my husband were quite young but madly in love! It was a beautiful wedding his parents paid also and we are forever grateful to them.

Here in the Philippines the grooms family usually pay for the wedding but since we don't have parents anymore i help my brother pay for his wedding. My parents paid for a large chunk of my wedding (they wanted to), me and my husband paid for what we could like the DJ and photographer, one of my bridesmaids paid for all the flowers and my in laws paid for our honeymoon. My aunt and uncle had a timeshare so we didn't have to pay for hotel stay.

If I ever get married my wedding will be small (immediate family). I might splurge on my dress and the cake. Even a small wedding can cost alot but if you work with a budget and stick to it it can be be beautiful and economical. I've seen alot of DIY weddings that were really beautiful on a budget.
When I got married, I payed for ALOT of my wedding. My dad payed a little, my dad payed a little, and my mother in law paid for some. I just hope whenever we have kids, we are in the position to help out a lot more than my parents were.

The tradition for the father of the bride paying for the wedding started b/c a wife was a “financial burden” to the grooms family b/c the wife would go live with the groom and his parents since they would marry young. And so they’re “giving her away” and paying for the wedding in exchange. I believe now a days since its more common to get married when you’re an older adult they are paying for their own wedding because they can.

What the hell guys?!?! I didn't even know that was a thing. I think the couple should pay on their own but if they need help then BOTH sides of the parents could be used.
At 1st, my dad..(i cried and cried..lol) said the most he could give was $500. Again, I cried and I cried lol I THANK GOD for my step mom (at the time she was my dads gf) I KNOW she IS the reason my Dad ended up funding 1/2 of our wedding. (My Mother is deceased) We did the other half. My in laws paid for the rehearsal dinner. All together I'd say our wedding was around $10,000. We did a lot of DIY. Our wedding was actually quite nice! We got married at an old plantation house (old santee canal park) if you're up for a southern destination wedding its a GREAT inexpensive place to do it! Its $2,500 and can seat up to 300ppl. When we got married in 2010 it was only $1,000.
Tamera was born in Germany but her mother side is from the Bahamas! She did pay a pretty coin for her wedding I think those tents were 20,000 dollars themselves because of rain in Napa! I watched the reality show and yes I love her dearly! As for her wedding dress she was really sensitive about Tia leaving it in the back of the car/truck! She says it was under 5,000 dollars! She was going over her budget so she had to cut flowers she wanted!
