spot on, on all points, great live show at HOB..i havent seen reaction yet let's see if boys can let an S be wrested from their vicelike grip for a top twenty 90s defining song...the song RUN .unbelievable chill inducing...high notes... used to request it from a DJ..when a certain Mandy(she was chill inducing also) used to ...hmm anyway.. she moved into my place for 3 days and then straight back to the old man
I was a teen in the early 70's but I dont mind admitting that Collective Soul is the only 90's band that I own every one of their releases. Just some tremendous music.
Yeah (Pun intended), and they vary it up enough to where you can tell the people who really know the song when they sing with the radio if they know where to put the "Yeahs"...lol...
Yes, one of the best riffs. This songbi have loved even though they are much younger than the music I grew up with. But the arrangement is so so unique, the percussion is killer, and I just love the "yeah"at the end of the riff. One of the best of the 90's. And yes December is good, too!!!!!
I was the mom who drove her high school kids everywhere, met so many of her friends and listened to so much of their music. I'm so glad that I got introduced to Collective Soul and many other groups from the 90s. Great band, fantastic song!
Picture a chilly, rainy outdoor music festival. "Shine" has already been played by another band, but the band you love and came to see has now taken the stage. A few songs into the set, they also play "Shine"..... but this time, just as they're going into the chorus, the clouds parted, and the light LITERALLY shone down on us all! AMAZING festival moment! We all had goosebumps for a much different reason.
"The World I Know" is my favorite followed by "Heavy" and "Gel". I've seen them 3 times and they're so much fun live. Plus they had a zillion songs on the radio!
Good memories accompany this killer track. Bars, beers, friends, late nights, just basically being in my twenties and living the good life as someone in his twenties should. Yeah.
Collective Soul is . . . Underrated!! LOL!! Really, they are very good, with multiple hits with different vibes. I liked "December" and "The World I Know".
There was a song from 1970 titled "Spirit in the Sky" that had a guitar sound others have tried and failed to reproduce. The guitar lead in to this song almost matches that sound. Maybe they were on to something.
Hey A&A! Now that you've hit this song by Collective Soul, y'all gotta hit "December". I love the harmonies and lyrical play in that song. I hope you guys will love it, too. Peace! 🕊
LOVE Collective Soul and have this album along with Dosage (Heavy, Run, Needs) which has so many good songs and worth a listen . December is my fave song by them. They were my fave 90's band along with Toad the Wet Sprocket (Dulcinea is a great album, songs like Fall Down, Fly from Heaven, Crowing, Somethings Always Wrong).
Dean knew someone on our softball team and he joined our team for a season back in the early 2000's. I got to say my personal catcher (I pitched) was a famous rocker...
One of my fave bands to come out of the 90s. Grunge was in full swing, then along comes this song that's got a catchy melody, sing along chorus, killer hook riff and... GASP...A GUITAR SOLO. Whole album is great, definitely do more from them.
Ed Roland, the lead singer, put this album together to showcase his songwriting talent and released it on an independent label. Shine got airplay on local rock radio in Georgia and Florida. After getting requests Roland put a band together with his brother and some other friends to play live shows. They re-released Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid in 94 on Atlantic records and Shine got heavy national radio play. They had a bunch of Radio hits in the 90s. Gel, Heavy, Run, December, The World I know and others. I''ve been a big fan of their sound for years.
I have a vivid image from 1994 when I was a junior banquet cook in a very large hotel. My sous Chef, in the banquet kitchen, would just jam out on the air guitar to this fucking song and he was just hilariously good at doing it!!! Early career memories!! Been cooking since '93-31 yrs sheesh!
You picked a hard career that demands allot of you. My son worked his way up to Executive Chef over several restaurants in Seattle, so I know it can be a bitch sometimes. He’s probably close to your age now. I hope it’s been rewarding for you. ! 👍
@@helenespaulding7562 strange thing is that I went to the University of Florida for an Aerospace engineering degree. I ended up majoring in Alcoholism. Didn't know I could cook or had a flaire for it until I was in a rehab facility in Chattanooga. It's been a love/hate relationship. Sober at least for the last almost 22 years.
I was in the military when this song came out and as soon as I heard it on the radio I was hooked!!! I got to see them play in a club in Virginia Beach before they were "famous.." This is still my favorite song by them... ❤
Absolute BANGER! A band that I underappreciated until last summer while listening to Collective Soul Essentials on Apple Music while mowing my lawn. Made the whole experience so much better.
My band used to play this song back in the mid 90’s. It was such a strong high energy song that we ended the night with it. Everyone dancing. Everyone wanting more.
...where would this song be without the: "...yeah..." during each pause??? It's a very conservative rocker of a song. Safe rock. Pretty simple... but it works!!
I became a huge fan of Collective Soul when I purchased this as a cd when it came out. They were one of only a handful of bands that I followed since the 80's ended. Their follow up album "Collective Soul" was even better in my opinion. "The World I know" "December" "Gel" "Reunion" are among my favorites from that collection; however, the whole album is fantastic!
This song won the "Guitar solo of the year" poll from Guitar World magazine in 1994..... which was hilarious since there were no more guitar solos due to the grunge scene lol
This band has many BANGERS in it's discography. "December", "heavy" "smashing young man" "Run", "The World I know". Excellent band, great music, good times! Cheers, bros!! 🍻🍻
My personal favorite by Collective Soul, other than Shine of course which is just a near perfect song, is "Heavy". Not their most popular I'm sure but it did get radio play time. I just really enjoy how hard it goes with the guitar.
I love how Ed Roland has turned into an old hippie and is so humble....He helped write so many songs that were the soundtrack to the 90s and my youth ....He is the unsung hero who got lost in the grunge era
Wonderful memory on this: When this tune came out, my niece 2 or 3 years old at the time, loved this song & she would sing “baby let your light shine down!” Now, 30+ years later, she’s just had her 1st child, a girl, this February. I will be turning her onto this song as well.
Another 90’s song that came in second place awhile ago was Lightning Crashes by Live. An amazing song with an incredible build up that I think you both would like!
Nice, I was not aware of what song this was, but it immediately came back to me. Had not heard in years. How about New Radicals, "You Get What You Give."
I played as a house band musician for many years from 94 to basically 2006. This song was a staple of ours. As a drummer I completely understand your drummer wanting to do it. I also used to sing the lead vocals on this as well while playing drums so I know it's a weird song vocally. We used to use this as an opener of our second or third set of the night. It gave the crowd something to vibe too, gave me a workout on the drums, and warmed the rest of the band up for the set. If you ever do decide to do it, I again, suggest you use it as an opener for a set. Doesn't wear you out, pumps the crowd, and makes the drummer happy.
As an old fart that grew up on late 60s and 70s rock - this is a damn fine song!
ditto!
Me too, and I think Collective Soul is a damn fine band.
Surely this band took inspiration from those days. That seems all but lost on the new bands nowadays.
I hope you get into more 90s, because there is great stuff.
Amen brother!
Ed Roland said he sang the “yeah” through the cardboard from a roll of toilet paper.
Ahh the Rick Beato interview.
This song exploded Collective Soul onto the scene. "The World I Know" would be a good one to hit next for them.
This song has rock, blues, soul, and prog all in the same song. We all loved it!
Yep. 50's, 60's era here, and I agree!!
…until we heard it for the 287,975th time in 1995
@@mattgarfinkle978 There's an off button on the radio somewhere.....
As someone who saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, I can tell you I love Collective Soul.

Born in 1955 myself, I’ve long said (and so did my 90s co-workers) that the 90s sounded a lot like the 70s
I always loved the “yeah” throughout the song. It’s such a simple thing but it makes the song so much better because of it!
It's like the guitar double note in Jack & Diane. So simple. Baaaaaaaaahm, boomm, ba ba bomp. DID DIDNT [pause] DID DIDNT
Yeah (Pun intended), and they vary it up enough to where you can tell the people who really know the song when they sing with the radio if they know where to put the "Yeahs"...lol...
I love how every time I come to this channel, Andy's hair is significantly longer.
He’s got that Southern rock vibe going.
Broke up with long time girlfriend and is becoming feral. ~ my husband's take

@@gidget8717 that's too funny
That is how it works I think.
…and brighter
December is my favorite by them. I think you guys would like it. The riff in Shine is quintessential grunge.
December is great . So is Gel!!
I’ll second that!
December is a great track
"Where the River Flows" is another great one
One of the biggest ear worm riffs ever
Yes, one of the best riffs. This songbi have loved even though they are much younger than the music I grew up with. But the arrangement is so so unique, the percussion is killer, and I just love the "yeah"at the end of the riff. One of the best of the 90's. And yes December is good, too!!!!!
yeah!
The World I Know was another big song from them to check out. Different vibe but also very well done.
My absolute favorite song of Collective soul.
forgot about it! great song!
Whoever's idea this was, Good call!
I don't see many reaction channels focusing on Collective Soul.
I was the mom who drove her high school kids everywhere, met so many of her friends and listened to so much of their music. I'm so glad that I got introduced to Collective Soul and many other groups from the 90s. Great band, fantastic song!
“December” from Collective Soul is *chef’s kiss*

Gel was always on my workout mixes. Absolutely killer tune.
My band opened for these guys years ago. Biggest crowd we've ever played in front of. Good times.

Yea, how about Gel or December next.

Where The River Flows is Awsome too.
Ohhh, yes, yes, yes, Gents! Total banger, totally underrated group.
Check out Dolly Parton's cover of this song.
It is such a departure and is what a great cover should be.
Had a hard time imagining Dolly covering this but after listening..holy shit! I loved it & the banjo is always a plus. Thanks for recommending!
Aw, you beat me to it, I was going to mention Parton's version. Agreed!🙂
It's magnificent.
I am immediately going to check this out. Can't even begin to imagine lol.
Awesome underrated band from the '90s with a unique sound
“I just love that.”
“So does everybody.” 😂

So Good
Probably the most 90s rock song ever. It has all of the Grunge-y instrumental elements and gravely "Durr durr durr" vocals turned up to 100.
saw these guys on New Year's Eve in Tempe, Arizona. Was a really good time and Mark Grace even got on stage and sang...haha
LOVE Collective Soul and have this album along with Dosage (Heavy, Run, Needs) which has so many good songs and worth a listen . December is my fave song by them. Collective Soul had such a knack for creating great hooks and riffs. Try “Gel” or “Run” next. Kings of the one word song titles.
Run is an amazing song. For some reason it always puts a lump in my throat. I think I've tied it to a ton of memories.
Dolly Partons bluegrass cover of this is top tier.
One of my fave bands to come out of the 90s. Grunge was in full swing, then along comes this song that's got a catchy melody, sing along chorus, killer hook riff and... GASP...A GUITAR SOLO.

70’s Classic Rock never Sounded So Good coming from a Band in the 90’s 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The stops/drops in rock songs were perhaps overly used in the 90s, but this is a particularly strong use of the technique.
Where the river flows is another banger from them.
Dolly Parton actually covered this song. I know, I was shocked, too. She also covered REO SPEEDWAGON’s TIME FOR ME TO FLY. Odd, the stuff I remember.
"Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum
Thanks guys, try Where the River Flows. It's a banger
More Collective Soul! 🔥🔥🔥
They are still touring and sound fabulous!!
This entire album is outstanding front to back.
One of the best yet seldom talked about bands of the 90s. So many bangers
Singer Ed Roland reportedly played all the instruments on “Shine” as it was pretty much the demo.
Best selling alternative rock band of the 90s!
