That's why I use toned sketchbooks. Grey and tan are my favs. A pencil and a white charcoal pencil and you're good to go. Helps when practicing reflective objects as well.

I personally learnt by observing and sketching the clothes of statues to start, since my mind understands sharp and solid shapes better, then I moved on to draping small kerchiefs on action figures and drawing that

LOOK AT A DRESS AND IMAGINE WHERE ITS GONNA FOLD AND END find the creases and end points of a skirt and slowly get inspired from it and go nuts
There will be creases where the skin stretches
And there will be creases where the clothes get stretched. If the clothes are short and not stretching, then they wont have alot of creases if they are strecting, like if u have seen a cropped top on a girl, it will look like that. If the clothes are longer and not stretching and hanging by the hip, they will look a little bungy

It seems like having a reference while you practice (whether a picture or an actual piece of draped cloth) would be helpful for a while. After you get the hang of how the shapes and folds work, you’ll probably be able to draw it from memory and have an easier time improvising.

"...but just keep drawing and you'll get it. I promise." Is the most reassuring artist advice I've ever heard. Everyone always says "Practice makes perfect!" but what this guy said and the way he said it eases my nerves about drawing.
Like this guy is so talented I could see him tracing and be amazed with his art.
As a costume designer who loves costumes that are beautifully draped this is really helpful. We're always learning.

when drawing puffy clothes, keep in mind that there's volume. don't start with a full figure sketch unless you can already visualize where the clothes will create thickness, change range of motion, and so on. Keep your sketch loose and refine from there, including both a layer of figure and cloth
I am not an artist but I like watching your „how to“ content, it makes me appreciate art even more.
I always start by drawing it flat, then drawing in different triangles, later drawing the cloth around the edges and softening the corners. Knowing where the light is coming in is extremely helpful

Any number 2 pencil is great for drawing/sketching.
I use a 4H so that I can erase it easily.
I recommend 2b pencils. I think they look softer and they are easier to erase. They are my favorite.
Any pencil set that has HB, 2B, 4B, 2H, 4H, 6H, and etc.
You need a variety of pencils. And a kneaded eraser.

Nah you're not working wrong. :)
Just that different pencils have different qualities. Higher the B, the softer it is and more darker (so it allows easy blending) and the higher the H, the harder and lighter it is (great for details).
They're often $11 to $20 USD for a simple set.
i used to hate drawing creases in clothes but what helped me understand is how the lines usually come out from a singular point/section 😗
(also learning where the highlights and shadows are and how the material of the cloth can interacts with light helps me visualize how it looks! 😩)

When I took art classes, I was done with the piece I was working on and asked my teacher what to do next. She took a tissue, crumpled it up, and said "draw this"

This is how my drawing professor taught us to draw folds and drapery when I was in school. Points of tension are integral to making believable representations of any sort of cloth. I remember being amazed at how clothes suddenly started making more sense and looking correct when I drew them. Very useful!
I'd like to add to this!
When I was learning, I used a washcloth or handkerchief to start, I found it really helpful.
Lay it flat on a table, hold one spot in place, and slowly push the other corners "down" away from the hold point. Holding from an edge or corner has different effects.
Track the corners as you push them. Once you have an idea where each corner goes, it's easier to fill in the edges.
If you hold towards the middle, it'll bunch up above the hold point as well.
Then once you have that nailed down, upgrading to rounded cuts of cloth. Making mental (or physical if you have a scrap to study) dots at opposite sides can act like a "corner" to track.
*Note: using strong lighting can make the folds more clear to see, so a desk lamp at a low angle is a simple and good tool when studying!

I love how old fashioned your tracing is. When I study my favorites, I load screenshots into krita and go to town on another layer.
You are teaching me more than i ever learned in any of my art classes in school but then again my school system didn't value art and what they had to teach me couldn't be taught in a 45 minute class for 3 months because they had a lot to teach us. 'It's day 462 of my offical art studies. Today, I have tasked myself with studying... dare I say it... extroverts in their natural environment. I have selected a pair to follow and observe. Thankfully, they have stopped for food, allowijg me to do my work. My hiding spot has been carefully selected, scoped, and utilized. I am perfectly hidden behind the lush foliage, unseen by those I am watching. My elbows are a little cramped, and my sketchbook feels a bit unbalanced, but I shall persevere for the sake of Art. Thus far, I have 5 pages filled, with a 6th well under way.'
Across the hallway at the mall-
"Hey, what's that guy doing behind that bush?"
"I dunno, let's ask him. Hey you over there! Whatcha doin' man?"
The artist pops out and runs away screaming, shedding pages along the way.
"Oops..." A rustle of paper. "Whoever it was is pretty good. The sketch is a dead ringer for you."
"No kidding! Hey, wait a sec... I recognize this tag."
"Oh? Who is it?"
"My cousin. I follow him on Instagram. He's actually got some really cool stuff on there; you should check it out. I'll swing by tomorrow and give him the papers he dropped."
"Dude, how did you not recognize it was your cousin back there?"
"Well for one, the only time I really see his face is when his name is called and he looks up from his book with a deer-in-the-headlights look."
"Fair enough..."

Thanks for making this so easy. I have ALWAYS had problems with folds,and body postures and pretty much everything. My doodles are just lines and overdrawn stiff bodies without any tilt or normal posture. Apparently you learn this all when you're 11 and not 24. Thanks for teaching the basics.

The sculpture "The Ecstacy of St. Theresa" is one of my favorite pieces of showing amazing depiction of fabric movement. I know that's not what the piece is known for, but that's one of the aspects I can spend a long time studying.

I don’t draw (my sister does, though, and I love sending her stuff like this) but I really, really enjoy watching people talk about what they love. And I can tell just from watching this that you love what you do.
Its really fascinating that drawing made you learn about a lot of things in depth. Like learning about how clothes folds, you need to know what type of fabric it is and how the fabric is sewn. Or if you wanna draw forest in specific area, you need to learn the ecosystem of that area you can't just draw any trees or animals there.

I actually really appreciate this, I may not draw in a realistic style often but even when I’m drawing more unrealistically folding of clothes are a pain for me! Didn’t even realise point of tensions are where folds happen!

And tracing is great practice too! Spending free time tracing anatomy and clothes in magazines or on your tablet is one of the best ways to get a feel for what's right. Not to claim as your own, obviously, but I used to do that for hours when I was younger and it's a lot easier to eyeball proportions now :)

I just started painting (and drawing, I'm really bad at both) and enjoying it! What I paint rarely turns out beautiful but I don't care, the hour I spend on it is always so relaxing and fun at the same time. Watching your videos is really inspiring, I don't feel like a failure anymore. I'm just like "yeah, that's quite bad. But I did it!" haha. You're really an awesome teacher and painter, wish you all the best!
I love how this video is actual helpful drills and advice where to look for good examples, rather than being a video where you draw an anime character standing straight up, but with clothing that folds.
Clothing folds is really hard for me too. As in dress shirts and certain lax dresses. This helps actually!

I love JC Leyendecker’s art! Now that I’m thinking about it, one of the first things I noticed about his works was the clothes (and maybe the muted colors, it just looks like art is dusted with fine beige parchment paper and I like that for some reason).
Also when I get to working the intricacies of clothing in my art - the folds, the embroidery, even the seaming - I get into it, and it’s so much fun.

See drawing folds in clothing and just clothing in general is something I'm excellent at. Comes from all my years of dreaming of being a fashion designer.
Cloth is one of my favorite things to draw, but I’ve been going through an art block and I have been enjoying fabric as well as I used to. Thank you so much for this video, I’ll practice immediately! I also need to remind myself that it’s ok to use references… 😅

Tracing isn't as bad as a lot of people think it is. It's a great way to understand something and just get your foot in the door. Once you get better as it, you won't need to trace. It's only when you publish it and don't give credit, or you sell it, that it becomes a problem.
