One of my favourites too. Seen him live three times but he's not yet played this. Would be great to hear it when I see him again in November on his European tour.
at 4:14 in case you missed it, he is singing and playing guitar, he steps his foot down on his tuner and mutes his guitar, he then adjusts the G string on his guitar while singing. And then resumes playing. It's little things like that show his musicianship. Some performers just wave their hand and a roadie brings them another guitar. This guy is good.
he is using in inline tuner. its made for this. by engaging it with the foot switch it mutes, you strum and adjust, it gives you a light when its right, you push the foot switch again and you are live again. it works perfect with the "in ear" monitors because you can hear the slightest variances and self correct on the fly.

Love this song - still brilliant The a Dirty South is an awesome DBT album - several stand-out cuts but this is haunting and wonderful. This is a slightly different version featuring some lovely guitar work and fiddle playing. Jason is a great writer and is stretching himself - his albums with the 400 Unit are seriously good Southeastern another great record Agree DBT still producing great music Saw them on latest tour and English Oceans another fantastic record. Hood and Cooley still delivering. Go Go Boots, Creation's Dark and Big To Do are all laced with trademark songwriting, and great playing. Jason left on good terms with the guys - certainly in better health now he's stopped drinking, married Amanda and is getting the acclaim he deserves. Long May Jason, DBT and Amanda Shires keep on entertaining us Gotta love good music
Love him, raising my kids on his music is one of my prouder accomplishments. All the other things we did back in the day are memories. This makes a new memory every time until that story is told. Edit; so glad to see he’s sober successful and happy. I haven’t a drink years, but I’m surrounded by excuses making addicts
What these two did today and stood up against The CMA Awards makes them true American heros. The three that have passed and couldn't speak for themselves makes Amanda and Jason true pioneers in the business . They've started a movement, true hero's.
Funny story I'm from florence Alabama used to play music with some boys from greenhill and they swore up and down Jason's mama lived down the road and when he was in town they would get him to set in with use that's been bout 10 years and I m still waiting for it to happen
This is one of the finest live performances I've ever seen or heard. The composition, the timing, the rapport between all the players. Just fantastic by Jason, Amanda and the 400 unit
Jason and Jimbo's harmonies on that last verse (around 08:30) give me goosebumps every time I watch this video... And I've easily watched it a few hundred times!
you just know that Rick and Richard would dig it..plenty of space , no need to scream it . got to get it in your soul , find something to fill the hole
that's an homage to rick danko and richard manuel. two giants we were lucky to have tear through the scene leaving a body of work i still lean on when its needed
The space that they give before the solo is great musicianship in my opinion. Let it breathe and build it up. And build it up they do! Shires plays her best fiddle here I think. Absolutely serves the song.
Literally no words to describe how great Jason Isbell is as a songwriter...singer and guitar player...best songwriter since Springsteen in his prime. Legend in the making..His last four albums are simply masterpieces. Can't wait to see this guy and his amazing band play live.
At the risk of being sac-religious, I say this dirge is the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 21st century. Jason ought to be the biggest star on the planet.
I call this song a modern “Stairway to Heaven” because it is something of a symphonic temple. What Jason has done here is create a hymn that we can weave our own thoughts into. All of us “old rockers” who have been around for a few decades have heroes who ascended the stairway too soon. Jason’s creation gives us something to project our own personal hero worship into……………………………………… Would Lynott have been proud of me? Is he the man I wanna be?.............................................enough said
Just an absolutely incredible concept for a song and done extremely well. I'm sure Richard and Rick are honored. Two men who deserve their own song. Real art! Jason is the man.
All these years later and this is one my favorites by him.
Definitely I got this, dress blues live, cover me up and streetlights on paste
I love his new stuff but this shit gets me where it counts

This song pulls at me so hard..I'm ugly crying. How did I not know about you?? I'm opening a new chapter of my life because of this. Thank you!!
How is the new chapter going if I may ask?😊
@@brazenlilhussy5975 it's terrific! Just got married to my high school crush at 40 yo, selling my house, building one with him, and we're planning to see Jason Isbell at the end of September! Thanks for checking up!
@@micahaynes3119 Lol...would you believe I was just listening to my Jason Isbell playlist as I read this! Congrats on everything going forward, all the best.
Love this song - still brilliant
The a Dirty South is an awesome DBT album - several stand-out cuts but this is haunting and wonderful. This is a slightly different version featuring some lovely guitar work and fiddle playing.
Jason is a great writer and is stretching himself - his albums with the 400 Unit are seriously good
Southeastern another great record
Agree DBT still producing great music
Saw them on latest tour and English Oceans another fantastic record.
Long May Jason, DBT and Amanda Shires keep on entertaining us
Gotta love good music
Love him, raising my kids on his music is one of my prouder accomplishments. All the other things we did back in the day are memories. This makes a new memory every time until that story is told.
Edit; so glad to see he’s sober successful and happy. I haven’t a drink years, but I’m surrounded by excuses making addicts
You can almost hear that guitar moan and cry during that solo. Like telling a sad story.
Damn brilliant.
This is the first Isbell song I ever heard. I was hooked and still am.
One of the grandest stages of them all! JI is the man. Thanks for the huge inspiration!
I'm not a huge "country" fan, but Jason Isbell is one if the best singer/songwriters of this generation. This is coming from a metalhead
I don’t think this “genre” is country - he is great - Southern, for damn sure; but I couldn’t pigeon hole this music, nor would I want to…
Watched this hundreds of times
I love discovering new music this good!
Go buy "live from Alabama Jason Isbell" and "Southeastern" It will be money well spent. Jason Isbell is amazing writer and singer !
God dang. After years of watching the same video, this still kills me every time.
"Cheerful little ditty" jason was able to put into a song the demise of 2 beautiful musicians, god rest their souls
Off one of the greatest albums ever, The Dirty South
This is the best live performance of all !
That slide solo gets me everytime... Isbell is the Real Deal!
SRV-level talent. Glad his woman is strong for him. Lucky guy.
This is the most beautiful song I think I've ever heard. It's incredible, it's longing, it's sad. It just so good.
this song tho!!! haunting, i cant find the right words.
I don’t know how Jason makes it through this song when he sings it without crying. Goodness knows I can’t.💔🖤
I've yet to grow tired of it. Must have watched 100 times, no exaggeration.
you just know that Rick and Richard would dig it..plenty of space , no need to scream it . got to get it in your soul , find something to fill the hole
I think they would rather be alive
I've just recently discovered Jason and really love his music...…..this song is outstanding!
Best song he ever wrote! But there’s so many good ones..legend
One of the absolute best live performances I've ever seen! Doesn't get more real or in the moment than this.
Can't you hear that singing, sounds like gold... I only hear it in my heaaaaaad
that's an homage to rick danko and richard manuel. two giants we were lucky to have tear through the scene leaving a body of work i still lean on when its needed
One of his best songs, hands down.
The space that they give before the solo is great musicianship in my opinion. Let it breathe and build it up. And build it up they do! Shires plays her best fiddle here I think. Absolutely serves the song.
Saw Jason twice last year. Two of the best shows I've ever seen
What a riff this is. I love the sheer simplicity of it, and how its beauty is all in the feel used to play it. Great song!
Just Perfect! Big surprise was his slide playing. Awesome singer/songwriter. The title was what brought me in, glad he likes the Band!
Literally no words to describe how great Jason Isbell is as a songwriter...singer and guitar player...best songwriter since Springsteen in his prime. Legend in the making..His last four albums are simply masterpieces. Can't wait to see this guy and his amazing band play live.
J’I’ = Absolute Class Act, Gets better with every release. Country story telling at its very best, love it.
God. I love this guy, his writing of lyrics is just second to none. Live oak is pretty special like many of his songs
Yep it's March 2019 and I'm back AGAIN watching this video. Love me some Jason Isbell !!
May 2019, same. Some things you just check back in on, nah?
@@josephspagna2829 June. Return often.
That solo is just magical.
Greatest tribute to The Band ever done...!!
sure is
At the risk of being sac-religious, I say this dirge is the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 21st century.
Is he the man I wanna be?.............................................enough said
Every one of these songs I hear is just more and more amazing. I adore Jason. OMG.
RIP Richard and Rick
Not enough superlatives to do this one justice ... Absolutely amazing - almost spiritual ... Thanks!
No bothers bob I'm here all week! (Apart from Mondays through Sundays anyway) 😉 it's an absolute beaut of a tune.
My God this man and his band is so good.
Love this ! incredible music !
Fortunately I’m currently almost addicted to this song...almost...just haven’t crossed over into powerlessness yet. So simple but so powerful
I love the drama of this track. Brilliantly executed.
Every time I see this, I'm struck by his ability to communicate as an artist both vocally and as a musician.
The fiddle adds something that is just...profound. It's not harmony per se, it's a conversation.
will be a legend one day---great talent
Just an absolutely incredible concept for a song and done extremely well. I'm sure Richard and Rick are honored. Two men who deserve their own song. Real art! Jason is the man.
