It's been six or seven years since I first heard this song and ill come back once and a while to listen to it and it still fills me with this deep sense of melancholy
I'm awfully late to this anime but I just finished it a few days ago. Gankutsuou is a masterpiece; it's beautiful, deep, and a great adaptation of Dumas's book. It had earned the title "My Favorite Anime." It's just that good. My words can't express my passion towards this gorgeous show.
The verse "Nothing can go wrong" really gets me because it make me realize how blinded by love Edmond was. When we're truly and deeply in love with someone, we don't pay any mind to what can go wrong because we like to envision a perfect life with the one we love; we convince ourselves that everything will go according to plan simply because we wish it to. The tragedy of the story was that Edmond's love, and by extension any hope for a happy life, was stolen from him.
Well, kind of. He get his revenge and find a consolation but he asn't so innocent anymore. I mean, he did terrible thigs (and planned do even worse) and he don't feet that he deserve antyhing good from life. IBTW, I want to say, that Gankutsuou is probably the most faithful adaptation of this Dumas classic book. Even taking into account the sci-fi setting.
One of the most underrated, masterpiece of an anime to exist. They took the Alexander Dumas story and perfected it in anime. Beautiful, tragic, wholesome and perfection. This theme actually fits perfectly with Edmond and his feelings and emotions.
Agreed by far my favorite adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. I love the show so much and the animation is wondrous to behold as well as truly unique.
Gankutsuou soundtrack (2006) Jean Jacques Burnel - We Were Lovers - [Ultimate Version] Juste sublime et l'une des meilleures chansons d'openings d'animes.
This song is beautiful in it's own, and I thing "I bathed in you" is a PERFECT line. Have you never been so in love with someone that you were submersed in the other's everything, their daily activities were amazing, their very everything made you warmer just to be near, you were in love with their soul and went so deep until it surrounded you? Washed over by their energy and Bathed by the love you felt for them. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the line "I bathed in you".
I can't help but think of all the friends I've lost along the way from the past to the present. Some have died, some have disappeared in the mists of time and obligation with life and travel, and I can only hope they are still well today. Some have surely passed, but whether they have lived or died, I can only hope they've had wonderful lives for as long as they've had lives to live.
If you've watched the anime, this song goes perfectly with the count's feelings. Its about. His old friends betrayed him, and his best friend stole his wife and locked him up in jail. And the term "nothing can go wrong" means that everything can go wrong, and it did. His love and friends were taken away and was betrayed.I think it was the perfect song and word choice.
I've never seen this anime, but I have read the book. And this song conveys the somber mood of the work very well! It just makes me want to re read it all over again.
This song is so eerie. It suits so well with the series its almost downright scary, at times this song managed to creep my out; but its beauty stands out. Its possibly, if not the best, one of the most beautiful songs ever. And now, its time to go watch Gankutsuou..for the 100th time
This is one of the most relaxing yet disconcerting Ops I've ever heard and I don't know how to feel about it. I'm sure my feelings will change once I've seen the whole series but for now, something about the lyrics put me on edge
I... stumbled to this video again out of chance. Got hit with the most intense feeling of nostalgia and melancholy of my way, way younger self seeing this for the first time. Thank you for uploading and bringing back my memories.
The anime and the story both have lessons in them: 1-anything can go wrong 2-Not everyone is your friend sometimes real friends show up in weird places(The old man that was in the Cell with Edmond that taught him alot) 3-One betrayal is enough to turn the kindness souls into a vengeful ones 4-real vengeance is a dish that arrives very late but is so much spicy Those are some of the lessons I learned from the story there may be more but it’s one of the greatest stories that bring the attention of anyone to it

uno de mis openings de anine favorito, la verdad la historia del conde de montecristo me parece que se muestra de maravilla en esta cancion. gracias por esta bellesa
what is truely sad is most adaptations give this story a very happy ending like the film with Jim cavizel, in it Albert is Dantes son and there is very little to no time spent with other characters, the Vilfo scandal is never explored and Dunglar's bankruptcy is never addressed in a tasteless manner they discard them with murders or ruin them in underhanded ways where as Gankutsuou: the Count of Monte Cristoe portrays the book almost in its entirety but with a bizarre art design and fanciful future that is utterly absorbing and alluring that upon completion you want more even though it heavily implies the rest of the world is a dump I still want to see that dump I recall saying "My God what does the rest of earth alone look like!?" when I was only into the 3rd episode. By all means if you have never watched this series you are not a true lover of Alexsander Dumas

Well when you have a book as long as The Count of Monte Cristo, you need to cut corners. Gankutsuou has the benefit of being a full length anime series so it has time to explore everything. The also took in a new perspective by having the show revolve around Albert, so instead of seeing the Count manipulate everything, we see more of his effects on the world. This also allows us to see some of the characters trying to find out who exactly the Count is, leading to this mystery behind the scenes and wondering how he fits into Danglars, Villefort, and Fernad pasts. However it also has some jarring decisions as well. For example I would have been completely happy if they just adapted the book into an anime, but instead they set it in the future and as said before, begin to massively deviate from the book by the end. Plus a large amount of the book is Dante being in prison, meeting the scholar, and gaining the knowledge to take his revenge on those that wronged him; yet in the anime his entire backstory is something like half of an episode. A real shame too as this seems to be the only series that really made an attempt to adapt the book, but also had the time available to do it (being a 24 episodes).
very similar to some parts of Etude in E major Op. 10 No. 3 by Frederic Chopin for anyone who is interested in where inspiration for the song may have come from

JJ once explained he wrote the song around the piece and proceeded to play it live with an accoustic guitar.. He has different lyrics to it on another version where he sings about Chopin's heady romance. He's a clever guy and karate master hence his original links with Japan.
When I started the anime, i didn't like this song at all, but after the 14th time I listened to it, I was singing along, & by the last episode I was crying along lmao I love this song, it's so soothing, but sad. Also, kinda amazing that they let him spoil the anime so much in the lyrics....

I agree, but they "perfected" his story? Thats going too far, as if The Count Of Monte Cristo wasn't already perfect.
What I love about Gonzo's Gankutsuou: they took the concept of animated layered textures and made certain no-one could explore that field further.
