Misery and madness is what he lived at Chateau d'If. Now, as Dumas portrayed him, he is wise and powerful. Conclusion, whatever twisted sense of pleasure he derives from the suffering of his enemies may be considered evil but "being evil is an effect" not something he started out as.

I don't think of it like that. I believe he was laughing at this own misery, laughing at the knowledge that he could not himself escape his own madness.
I always believed that the Count did care for Albert on some level. The two were similar, at least when the Count was his age. They were both naive, but good at heart. Albert reminds him of who he once was, which is why we do see moments where he does care for the boy. He's just making sure it doesn't get in the way of his vengeance.
In the original book of Dumas Dandes never reveals his true plan so bluntly. Albert pretty much realizes everything himself. He challenges him to a Duel which Dandes accepts because he considers it part of his vengeance not because he hates Albert but because he swore to bring misery upon Fernando and his family. However the day before the Duel Mercedes goes to the count and begs him to spare her son's life. Monte Cristo eventually bends and agrees but feels ready to lose the Duel on purpose and die. The last moment Albert apologized and the Duel never occurred. In the end of the book the count shows his admiration for Albert's courage and his noble spirit and shows his love for him.
@@mohda2575 Frantz in the story was the first one to see the Count in the island of Monte Cristo. Monte Cristo invited him to his lair in the cave and offered him an exotic supper and a dissert that contained hashish. Franz fell asleep and when he woke up he was really impressed with what happened to him. When they meet with the Count at Rome he is the first one to recognize him (because in his lair the count looked like some Arabic pasha instead) and he introduced him to Albert. However after seeing his cruel behavior he changed his mind however he still begged the count for a loan and help for Albert. After the adventure at Rome we do not see him much but he returns because he is Valentine's betrothed. The wedding arranfement seemed to be moving smoothly till Valentine spoke to her father about her love for Maximilian (her relationship with Maximilian and Albert is totally different from here by the way). Then her grandfather called Albert to his room and showed him a letter that proved that Frantz's father was not murdered but killed fair and square in a Duel and also the one who fueled him was Valentine's grandfather himself! Upon hearing that Frantz leaves the room and ends the marriage proposal. He was far more emotional in the book as were was the Count and Villefort. By the way the Duel was to be done between the Count and Albert. Not Frantz.

lol, a funny thing happened. I was cosplaying the Count in this one con when suddenly some random dude comes to me, talking Albert's lines from this scene (in Japanese). SInce I happened to be fluent in the language, I responded to him word to word exactly how this scene goes (yes, I have this memorized). In the end we got quite the applauses :)
@RupertMass he WAS crying initially and it then turned to laughing. Did you miss the shot where his face is visually "divided" in half (I think it was his hand that divides it, but I could be wrong) and half of it is sad and the other shows that shiver-inducing smile? And THEN it becomes completely evil and then he suddenly turns to laughing in one of Gankutsuou's most shudder-worthy moments. Epic scene, yeah.
he laughs because he finally knows how the world is, how humanity is and that the truth which he embraced from the dark side is not fale but truth itself.
Albert is so insufferable in this. I like the Count's portrayal and that they upgraded Franz's importance and I'm fine with the rest, even how evil they made Villefort, when in the novel he wasn't that evil, but they butchered Albert.
The series was very special. Making the audience rooting for the bad guy is ingenious. The anime was great, but I thought the ending was bad. The book gave a more satisfying ending. I know it was an adaptation on Dumas' work, but they really should have made it as it in a 1800-style, rather than a futuristic look. Would have made more sense plot-wise.
The moment he start laughing, I cry. At first I just want to hear more nakata jouji voice, I stumbled upon this anime, this .... I didn't expect it to give me these sad feelings.
The movie is different yet very similar to the book. The whole mood is excellent and appropriate to the amazing novel story. If you want an equally great treat, read the book...
I agree he was devoured by his vengence. Still I have to say this anime is truley a masterpeice in art and story although it does go off from the novel but that just adds to it's uniqueness, very emotional and beautiful storyline however sad. The Count was my favorite character in the begining because he was so mysterious and kind at heart.

It should be the first site at the top and you will find a link to the unreleased tracks:) The song is called the End of Happiness and this song starts at 3:21 I believe. It's actually like a 6 min song...
@LutherOMight this song is not kaishu, it is called Tsukiyo, just one track before kaishu in the album. although it doesnt sound as good as in this scene.
I rember a line from the old move adaptaion that said this" angels of vengance dont get to ask for forgivness from there victims"i understand what he went trough but i also understand that innocent people will be hurt in getting your revenge and you have to be ok with that.
awesome awesome awesome started to love how the count looks and as I'm reading the book I can't decide how to immagine him XD anime, just like this (maybe with shorter hair and different beard..?) or like in the movie, as Jim Caviezel xD oh well, both are awesome -u-

People asking why the count turned out to be a bad guy and treated Albert this way, get on my nerves! Why?! You dare to ask why! You need to read the book tho, then you'll realize that this anime didn't even end like it supposed to.
@Abby - Albert was the son of his former bride-to-be and one of the man that sent him to prison just out of spite. Like, really? I'm not saying Albert did something to him directly, but you can't be mad at the count for wanting to destroy the lives (that includes their offspring, yes) of all those involved in his imprisonment.
@Abby - yeah. I get you, totally. In fact at the end of the book the count also concluded so: Children are not to be blamed for their parents sins. I was just saying that I know why the count was so bitter and angry.
I think the anime missed the Count's personality, the anime displays him as someone cold and nearly merciless, well, as someone who read the book twice and from time to time reread some chapters, it isn't true, especially when he talks about Haydee, he has compassion, he's just determined to deliver vengeance and justice because, according to him, he is sent by God to punish the unjusts.
I'd like to think that this Count is the same, but keep in mind that this is still a loose adaptation. While book Count was still fully capable of feeling empathy and caring for people, this Count is possessed by a parasitic alien that is controlling him in many ways - including psychologically. I'd like to think that, if he were fully in control of himself, he would very much be the same as book Count. (I believe, internally, he still IS. Which is why we see his emotions seemingly warring with themselves. He DOES care. It's just that the parasite has so much control now, that he CAN'T show it anymore. Even when he wants to.) It's a great adaptation, but still very much its own story. After all, it's in the name. "Gankutsuou" is the parasite that never existed in the novel, and the reason the Count loses all empathy and compassion by the end.
@@silversamurai0267 I know. Don't mind me, back then I just didn't like bad adaptations, Gankutsuou isn't one, but it isn't a faithful adaptation either, it's a good masterpiece on it's own, though the book is way beyond. I posted this comment simply because I love the character, and watching him being displayed as a bad person or a weak and manipulated one didn't settle well with me.
What I think some of us are missing is that this story incorporates a lot of ideas that fit better for Japanese tropes than European ones. "Gankutsuou" is a sort of wild demon who's taken over Edmond. He's different from Edmond, and this story doesn't jive with the Euro-Christian ideas of forgiveness and redemption like the original. Gankutsuou is not a nice guy, and he's all about the revenge. Hence, the liberal reinterpretation and infusion of tragedy in an eastern take on this western story.
I thought the ending was fantastic. Its just a personal view but for me for a character to become truly transcendental in any form of media they must die when their part is played to the end. For example when the Count died I felt so sad but also that it was a great way to end him and regain the last dregs of humanity in the process. I recently watched Code Geass and R2 and now every time I think of Lelouch I fill up with such a sorrowful feeling.
damn, you got my hopes up... sure enough, the THEME is there, but the arrangement is different and I wanted this one... not the "hip-hop drums" one (which was also used somewhere in this series) but the epic one, with a short additional melody overlayed and the bass line just being a whole lot better.
*continued in next post* but this arrangement is (sadly) not there. It's still worth it for the trailer music and for the whole "my friend" track which has three epic pieces of music mashed in one... and the "hip-hop" arrangement of this theme is actually pretty good, too... but don't hope for this particular arrangement of this particular piece. It isn't there.
@TheSpawnfan Actually, in the real story "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, Mercedes went to Montego because she was pregnant with Albert, the Count's son. This anime was set to be more futuristic, but in the times of the actual story, women were stoned to death if they were pregnant and not married...She always believed Edmond would come back, and preserved his legacy as well. She actually suffered just as much as Edmond.
No buddy. Mercedes wasnt pregnant with edmonds kid thats the movies plot. In the real story albert is fernands son 100% and Mercedes was just a weak person

That music, that music just pulls the heart-strings like it was a puppet, anyone knows where I can get it?

Yes, it's Kaishou (海嘯).
One of the most beautiful scenes I will not forget, every year I watch this scene for more than 10 years ❤️😔😔
I don't think of it like that.
I believe he was laughing at this own misery, laughing at the knowledge that he could not himself escape his own madness.
I love this because we can see the difference of Gankutsuou controlling the count and Edmond Dantes.
This scene is so powerful
My favorite song from the show

I always believed that the Count did care for Albert on some level. The two were similar, at least when the Count was his age. They were both naive, but good at heart. Albert reminds him of who he once was, which is why we do see moments where he does care for the boy. He's just making sure it doesn't get in the way of his vengeance.
TJ Jordan + totally agree
@@katerinaaqu no idea why the anime didnt do same , I guese they just wanted to kill Franz so bad😕😣
@@katerinaaqu I didnt read the book , so could please tell me about Franz role in the stroy since he didnt die in the deul?
Not Frantz.
for the music [both from the series soundtrack]:

I'm still looking for that BGM after all those years :')
It's Kaishou (海嘯); the 18th track on the official soundtrack. V^_^
lol, a funny thing happened.
"And everyone clapped"ffs
@@thalassaer4137 you don't believe him lol
Addendum: I really enjoyed how absolutely mad they portrayed Andrea Cavalcanti.
I wish find the music of this
This anime, hands down, was one I couldn't stop watching once I was hooked. I loved every second of it and will remain on my top list!
If you want an equally great treat, read the book...
i actually liked the ending for this anime. i thought it suited it well. anyway.. this anime is EPIC!!!!!!
I agree he was devoured by his vengence. Still I have to say this anime is truley a masterpeice in art and story although it does go off from the novel but that just adds to it's uniqueness, very emotional and beautiful storyline however sad. The Count was my favorite character in the begining because he was so mysterious and kind at heart.
are you alive
I love this song!! I have been searching for a while:P It won't let me put the link here, but go to google and search Gankutsuou lost letters. It should be the first site at the top and you will find a link to the unreleased tracks:) The song is called the End of Happiness and this song starts at 3:21 I believe. It's actually like a 6 min song...
that was my favourite scene of all!
Soundtrack name pls?
i knew vampire had cold heart and body but this absolute zero!!!!!!!
My favorite scene was the 1st armor fight scene, I wont say more since it has spoilers.
@LutherOMight this song is not kaishu, it is called Tsukiyo, just one track before kaishu in the album. although it doesnt sound as good as in this scene.
my fav scene too!!
I rember a line from the old move adaptaion that said this" angels of vengance dont get to ask for forgivness from there victims"i understand what he went trough but i also understand that innocent people will be hurt in getting your revenge and you have to be ok with that.
I can’t find this ost
cool
The name of the music in this video please
Are you still alive 🥺💔
🥺
awesome awesome awesome
started to love how the count looks and as I'm reading the book I can't decide how to immagine him XD anime, just like this (maybe with shorter hair and different beard..?) or like in the movie, as Jim Caviezel xD oh well, both are awesome -u-
i found on wiki he is sociopath or smth like that but i dont think this way maybe its a curse from gankutsuou makes him go insane
wiki villains is not objective at ALL (the same tvtropes) do not trust them, I can say that he is an antivillain and antihero
You cant blame someone to be evil when he was treated by human scum evils for centurys.
I was rejected by all women and stayed kind hearted until I was broken and with 35 reawkened. I gained full trust, peace of mind and justice and TRUTH only from the dark side.
Hate fills up my life energy and gives me motivation for my final goal: to become rich so I can take revenge and justice from all humanity and women world.
Because if you have money, you have power and all feel bad when they look at you. Only having milions or bilions of money will be revenge enough since they will go mad and crazy and run after you and you tell everyone to go to hell how ugly they are because they called me ugly all my life even i look decent fresh average but good average.
People asking why the count turned out to be a bad guy and treated Albert this way, get on my nerves!
Why?! You dare to ask why!
You need to read the book tho, then you'll realize that this anime didn't even end like it supposed to.
How does it really ends ?
Even when he wants to.)
It's a great adaptation, but still very much its own story.
Hence, the liberal reinterpretation and infusion of tragedy in an eastern take on this western story.
it's a tragic story
exactly! everything was pretty much perfect excep[t the Counts end... so sudden and insulting to his fans
احببته
@Zanaso12 That was 2002 movie, not the book. In book Albert was Fernand's son.
Gankutsuou (blue demon spaceboi) did nothing wrong fight me
If you still havent found it, It's name is Kaisho
mmm I like when the count smiles like that.....
An act of forgiveness killed the spirit of vengeance. Very powerful and deeply symbolic.
damn, you got my hopes up... sure enough, the THEME is there, but the arrangement is different and I wanted this one... not the "hip-hop drums" one (which was also used somewhere in this series) but the epic one, with a short additional melody overlayed and the bass line just being a whole lot better.
where can i get the background audio/score for this scene?
The Count and I are so alike.
Except, he's a sexy Count.
Alucard! 8D
Thank you !
What OST was playing?
@conliffe this song is not kaishu, it is called Tsukiyo, just one track before kaishu in the album. although it doesnt sound as good as in this scene.
genialidad
*continued in next post* but this arrangement is (sadly) not there.
It's still worth it for the trailer music and for the whole "my friend" track which has three epic pieces of music mashed in one... and the "hip-hop" arrangement of this theme is actually pretty good, too... but don't hope for this particular arrangement of this particular piece. It isn't there.
No, listen to it carefully (I mean the part around 0:30), it's not the same...
When the readaptation is better then the original story🌚
no
The anime portrays the Count as he should be, so use this as a guideline when you're reading, minus the blue skin and ears :P
Music of the scene exactly not similar to it ??
Why isn't the song that plays during this scene part of the OST? (It isn't Kaishou)
thx :) for the warning ^^
yorokobe shounen
we need berserker gankutsuou.
Finnally I found it
What is the OST?
Definitely one of the best if not the best scene in the whole show. But no challenge??
franz vs the count and when Albert follows the count in episode 1 are really good scenes too
where can I find this version of Kaishou?
Does anyone know the name of the song played in this scene?
@@nasiransari9761 she was not a weak person, damn she was an orphan and without a lot, yes or if she should get married and it was just fernando

thanks for putting this up. I really love that scene though it makes me get an AK-47 and shoot Count everywhere ( >:O )...can you tell me where i can find this version of kaisho please?
