  • In India, where you need a license to ride a bike on the road, and you have to pay a fine if you don't have a license, the government of that country has given 6 airports to a company who doesn't have any experience of riding an airport before that. Adani Group A business group that didn't have any authority to handle airports before 2019, after 2019, suddenly within 3 years, 8 airports are controlled. But the question here is, how did Adani Group get these 8 airports?
Because the rule is that no big company can run more than 2 airports So how did Adani Group get these 8 airports? Did they get them by giving money to the government? Or are all these things done legally? And the most important question is Does privatizing these airports give you any benefit? So in today's video, we will understand all these things in detail
Now, before we understand anything, we have to go back in time so that we can find out where all these things started from. Before 1995, all the international airports in our country were controlled by the International Airports Authority of India, IAAI. And all the other domestic airports were controlled by the National Airports Authority of India, NAAI.
But in 1994, the government passed the Airports Authority of India Act Under which IAAI and NAAI were combined to form a statutory body which is called the Airports Authority of India After which, for the next 4 years, the central government was controlling all the airports with the help of the Airports Authority of India
There were some airports that were given to the state government so that they could run it. But in 1999, the Kerala government said that they would privatize their Cochin airport. And because the airport is a matter of national security, they would not privatize it completely. After which, the Kerala government came up with a model called PPP. This model was not a new one.
In 1800s, Muhammad Ali, the ruler of Ottoman Empire, used this model to build railroads and dams Even in America, all the infrastructure is built on PPP model Now, how does this model work? We will understand it from the example of Cochin Airport So, the Kerala government first created a new company to run this PPP model Which was called Cochin International Airport Limited
i.e. C I A L Now, something like this will happen that the Cochin International Airport will come under C I A L and some of the shares of C I A L will be kept by the government and the rest will be distributed among the shareholders i.e. among the other investors Like today, if you see 32.42% of C I A L is with the Kerala government and the remaining 68.58% N R I's, industrialists, government companies
and even all the financial institutions have been divided among them. And today, Kochi Airport has more than 18,000 shareholders from 29 countries. Now, the profit in this model is also based on the shares. For example, if the company earns a profit of 100 rupees, then 32.42% or 32.42 rupees will go directly to the Kerala government.
and the remaining money will be distributed to the shareholders. Now we have understood that the government uses PPP, meaning Public Private Partnership Model, to run these airports. But what are the benefits of using this model? Let's understand this too. So look, whenever the PPP model is used, all the private players, their direct involvement comes into any particular government project. From which, if seen from a business standpoint, there are four benefits.
