    Only two minutes in, and I CANNOT thank you enough.
    I take possession of my 2007 tomorrow, and the frame rust is about 20% of this,;and I was a bit worried. I am so happy to see that this will not be overly cost prohibitive, and something I can attempt before bringing it to a professional.
    I too hope to keep my new (to me) FJ on the road and in my heart for as long as I can. It is replacing my Scion xB, which has been my only car since 2006 (and with “only” 256,000 miles, I could certainly keep driving it; but will pass on to a friend). I know other Toyota owners have to feel the kind of bittersweetness when moving from one legendary vehicle to the next.
    Thank you!

    • @Nohoze
      @Nohoze 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@geeksauthority Thank you! It was honestly an anxiety filling process to decide to replace this car. My Scion (Toyota Echo) has been way, way, way nicer to me than I have been to it. It’s seen me through some formative years in my life, and it has the dents, dings and scratches to prove it. Through all my bumbling through life…and, if I hold the self deprecation to a minimum…some pretty great triumphs… that little car has been there. Asking for almost nothing. The majority of work was parts wearing out far, far past their expiration date. It still has the first clutch.
      When looking for a new car, I couldn’t put my finger on what it was that I was actually looking for until I found the FJ (which, though searching nationwide (US) for a variety of different vehicles, ended up being within 30 minutes of my home). A durable, stylish vehicle with a unsurpassed reliability. It was a natural progression from the Scion in most ways, save for the aforementioned fuel economy. That will be an adjustment; but so will the added utility, towing capacity, ride height, and sixth gear (manual transmission for life). Until my Toyota FETV (Flying Electric Teleportation Vehicle) is designed, this should be my last ride.
      The dealer let me spend the day with it, and I already love it.
      Thank you so much for being here!

Drove up and watched someone buy the first. Second was gone an hour after I said I was coming. One dealer had a large bird as protection (🦃😂🦃😂… I’m not kidding, and it it was a monster). When I finally drove the RAV4, I knew I didn’t want to live without the connection to the car a manual transmission offers. After driving the one I bought, I knew. Love this video. I too am an FJ owner I'm on my second. My first was a 07 now I have a 2013. I live in New England and we use huge amounts of salt, but much worse is the Calcium Chloride. The calcium chloride practically turns cars into dust. Fluid film is a good tool to prevent rust. Top tip get a sprayer and spray it inside the frame rails. That will prevent the rust you can't see.

    Good job, and great narration! I love my 2012 Black Fj, and only recently bought it. As a body shop owner I bought one with very little "beginning" rust. I intend to paint the entire undercarriage after a thorough sandblasting, degreasing, and careful scan of "every single item under this car" when I'm finished I will have a completely rust free undercarriage and all components will look as good as the outside of this beautiful vehicle!

    • @philsparks3125
      @philsparks3125 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@chrismartinez8393 Hello Chris, The only way a shop estimate on that type of thing would be feasible, would be to charge what is called "time and materials"! The biggest problem however would be someone who would do this properly until the very end, and therein lies the problem of much time, and considerable expense to wire brush, sandblast, prime with a great "red oxide" metal primer, and then paint? Sandblasting anything is a major mess, and working underneath a vehicle would be a very hard, uncomfortable endeavor at best! Sand goes into everything it can get into, including your eyes, ears, and nose, so a respirator, and a plexiglass shield between you and the vehicle is another must have. So you have to be very aware to cover u-joints, bearing surfaces, oil seals, breather tubes, etc., or you will contaminate, and destroy many components pretty easily otherwise! It's labor intensive, but nothing prepares metal, and particularly rusty metal better than sandblasting. ..... If you are very handy with tools, and learn techniques fast you can do this yourself, and the material cost would be minimal! If you have access to an air compressor, of at least 5 H.P. then some simple tools will do this work, rather than trying to buy some of the alternatives? If you can have a workspace to yourself for a couple of weeks, you can do this? Preferably outside on top of 6 mil plastic that extends well beyond your vehicle in all directions! That way you can use a simple "siphon" type sandblaster say from Northern Hydraulics/ Harbor Freight etc., and you can sweep up, strain, and recover your sand many time over? ....... You need a "graded" sand like "olivine/or quartz" of a 120# for a small sandblaster! Don't try to use glass beads, except for small parts in a cabinet type blaster....... Should you decide to tackle this Chris, please feel welcome to contact me for further, and more specific instructions! I will be doing my own in the spring, on an outside carport, and will try to take good video of the before, and after. There are manufacturers who are making some exceptional paint coverings, that if "prepped properly" would protect the undercarriage for just some serious "long term" durability, say 20 plus years with minimal maintenance!

    • @chrismartinez8393
      @chrismartinez8393 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks I was just looking at a FJ 2013 and the undercarriage was rusting bad. It spent most of it's life in Nova Scotia before it came to the states based on the carfax. The salt from sea was hitting hard. Everything else look great. But couldn't justify buying at the price.

    Thank you, sir. Please take note to check the pressure release/vent valve on top of the rear differential. It's only about $20.00 CAD, but they tend to rust closed. This will cause build up of pressure within the diff, due to heat, and eventually cause your rear axle seals to blow.

    Pull your body plugs and make sure to spray inside of your rocker panels and door panels! Water likes to drain in and down and cause rust there, too. Great video about rust prevention on the cheap. I’ve been doing research on this too for an 07 Tacoma I just bought and for my girlfriends 2019 Camry. Both of them have frames that are in magnificent shape so far and I’d like to keep it that way. I’ve decided to go for wool wax but I’m torn between wool wax black or wool wax clear. Wool wax black will let me better distinguish what areas I have covered and what areas need covered. However, the clear will let me visually inspect the frame without having to remove. But then again, if prep work is done correctly and it’s applied correctly then there’s no reason any rust should be forming or returning. My biggest concern is about getting into all of the books and crannies of the frame. No sense in the outside of the frame being well protected if the inside of it is bare metal that’ll rust anyways. My Tacoma has one of those open ended frames, which basically makes it a non issue. But the Camry is not so lucky. I guess I’m just gonna do what I can this year with the low budget option and pinch my pennies to save for the nice air compressor kit with the spray gun and wand attachments. Will also need to buy an air compressor, haha.

    • @geeksauthority
      @geeksauthority  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for your comment and I appreciate that. I saw a new product ( spray gun ) which you can use to spray the wool wax. I hear your concern, I would rather stick with clear ones, as I wanted to see what's happening behind the scenes and need re application or not. After one and half almost, my FJ still looks just as I did this. Let's keep more yotas on the road :) All the best!

    POR 15 is a great product, I have used it on my frame and the rust never came back. If the metal is completely sealed from oxygen rust won't happen. That's what POR 15 does. But it's expensive and one hell of a job to apply.

    Hi, awesome video thanks for sharing! You’ve motivated me to also do this to my FJ and I spent a few days doing it. I do have a question for you, when you wash your car did the rust remover turn back to original liquid and fall off the rust? Bc I just did a under car wash and that’s what happened. I used the same rust remover as you to convert the rust. And it pretty much shows the rust again.

    • @geeksauthority
      @geeksauthority  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for your kind words. Well it's a rust converter, which means it convert rust into ferrous oxide, so chances of that converting back to rust is almost nil. May be you coated over the rust without removing the flake completely ? Dont worry, it's on-going process , so either get a pressure washer and flush out all rust and then apply it again or just apply where ever you see rust popping again. Make sure to apply the coating as well, to protect what you've done. All the best.

    How has this hold up . I live in Chicago and just got a 2004 honda pilot with only 51k miles so I'm trying to do the same to the frame . Thats so nice to hear Steven, thank you. Yes, you dont want to brush on rubber bushings or spray on bushings. Do not spray anything inside calipers because if it accidentally ends up in brake pads, that's not good. Since you are already there , check undercarriage gas tank strap as it usually rusts up pretty bad and break away while driving causing issues. Other than that, dont forget to subscribe (wink wink) and share your thoughts once done so it will be useful for others. All the best Steven - you can do it!

      I would say pretty well, previously it looked like a rust bucket - not anymore. Yes, it will make it worst IF you dont take care of the rust inside first and only what you can do it chemically with a rust converter. pressure wash, let it dry, rust converter two applications, then seal it with fluid film. Outside too same way, but I am looking to fluid film every two years - half hour to pressure wash, half hour to apply . That's why I didnt recommend painting, as rust grows inside it and you will never know. Let me know how it went and I will post a video later, if you sub you will get notification when I post. You can do your whole underneath with just two or three large spray cans of fluid film. You sure don't need a gal and then have to put it on with a brush. The spray can gets to places the brush can't. The can even has a hose to get inside the boxed framing.

    There are several years of Tacoma and Tundra models that there was NO WAY POSSIBLE to save the frame from rusting apart , they were built with re-cycled vehicles (old melted down vehicles) and the rust wasn't all removed from the melted steel .. So they rusted from the inside out (no possible way to fix that) .. Toyota was replacing the frames on most of them but now that ship has sailed .. Oil and undercoating will save them a little longer but in the long run your wasting your money ...
