To put this into perspective:
Rin is a girl who can do everything with little effort. She fell for a boy who could barely do anything but still put his heart and soul into it.
And now she's looking at the end result of all that blood, sweat and tears.
At how bitter, spiteful and defeated the boy she loved had become.
Kind of sad if you think about it objectively shirou and rin are the only couple who does not have their definite happy ending

Granted; its in the form of a H-Scene, a short dialogue from Archer (about getting thrown off London Bridge) and a moment where Shirou phones a Rin from an alternate timeline.
@@thinhvo3893 They actually do get a happy ending. Shirou not becoming Archer is an example of that. Shirou pursuing his ideals with his lover by his side is a definition of happiness.

That is the single most powerful line I've heard in anime history. It perfectly fits the bitter and tragic life style archer had lived.
It was a lifestyle he brought on himself, he pushed everyone away and chose the counter force.
Even Shirou ends up pushing them arriving at the same ending...just without regrets, kinda sad because that means Rin did not saved him in the end

Oh my god, no, that doesn't happen, the ending of the anime is symbolism. Shirou and Rin end up loving each other and saving each other, Shirou doesn't become Archer at the end, the Author of the visual novel has stated the chances of Shirou becoming Archer is close to zero.

No, he doesn't, how did you get this idea? Archers monologue at the end is him speculating what could happen, but based on Hollow Ataraxia, Shirou and Rin end up living happy lives together.
He spent his whole life trying to fulfill Kiritsugu's original dream, going as far as still trying even in death.
In the end he came up to the exact same realization as Kiritsugu.

@@randomanimangathingsilike3838 What was said was "close". The Fate route is the standard that diverts with just one or two factors being changed. Archer is Emiya Shirou from an unexplored route where some change occurred. Hell, Archer's route could be called "True Fate" as it should exist without his own intervention. So it stands to reason that if you just change something to make it so that at the end of a Fate route Emiya Shirou stays directly on his natural self destructive path, then you get Archer. I'd say, no Rin or Sakura to be by his side in the present/future, or a proper relationship with Saber where they both work through their similar self destructive nature's in the short time they spent together, would create an Archer.
Well, of course. Archer never met his Heroic Spirit self, because it wasn't made "yet". After all, Archer isn't a result of casual loop or something alike. As long one Emiya Shirou stays on his self-destructive path, Archer would come into existence and become permanent (as a Heroic Spirit).
I wonder what would Kiritsugu think if he knew this story.

He really didn't want Shirou to end up like him. That's why he didn't want to teach him magecraft, and when Shirou kept insisting, he taught him a flawed and painful method in hopes of making him give up
But still Shirou found a way to become like the hero he idolized. And if Kiritsugu knew that, well.... He would feel even more bad for failing both Illya and now Shirou as a parent

Since 2004 Archer to me was a person that I can be able to relate. His examples was perfect and his perseverance is admirable. For 17 years I can only say one thing to Archer. You truly bring out a man’s emotions to tears of reality.

its sad because he had no choice but to become a counter guardian, hundreds of people would've died if he didin't became one.
But everytime he was summoned as a CG,everyone dies around him for Alaya (Will of Humanity that recruited him) programmed the Counter Force (him especially) to leave no witnesses not even innocents.

at the end of EMIYA's life,Alaya the Will of Humanity that controls the Counter Force recruited EMIYA into it's fold and EMIYA accepted thinking he could save more people even after death. But here's the thing,Counter Guardians eliminates whatever that poses as a threat to humanity and their existence must never be known to humanity itself. Imagine if a threat shows up in the middle of a packed city and a Counter Guardian is summoned there to end the threat,everyone in the area where the Guardian is deployed will be killed (the Guardians' will was blocked in the time of their deployment so they're basically forced to watch their body kill innocents each time they're deployed) for the secrecy to be maintained. That's why Archer EMIYA wants to kill his past,so that none of the genocide he did while being a Counter Guardian ever happen.
Crowitzer the Howitzer Alaya also doesn't care about the specifics of the 'threat'. So even if someone found a radioactive element earlier than it should have been, or someone trying to make a peace agreement that could later start a world devastating war, the person(s) are still eliminated. So Counter guardians can be sent to kill anyone, even if its a 'wrong place, wrong time' situation.
In short: Being EMIYA is suffering
He isn't the only counter guardian. The job would have still gotten done whether or not he decided to become one. He wanted to be a hero of justice but Alaya doesn't care about that. The kicker is that he really is saving humanity but in the process his idealism is viciously deconstructed. He got exactly what he wished for and deeply regretted it.
His backstory is about enduring a lifetime of survival guilt syndrome.
Spendint his entire life for redemption to only reach a tragic demise.
This is why he became the hero of Justice Emiya. To serve the justice he never earned in his lifetime to others.
Then it turns out he still never got it.
His "justice" is something that will never come true....
Well in the first place... what is justice anyway?
Correction...to repay the salvation that he feels is not deserved when everyone else were left to die.
In the end our boy archer didn't have a happy ending it was still a little better in ubw but in the end he will still be CG for eternity until his body and mind break like a sword . Alaya is quite the bitch
@@nikhildominic1565 I don't think so. A huge point of UBW Shirou's ideals is that he will not focus on results like Archer and Kiritsugu. He knows it is impossible to save everyone but he will try to save as many as he can. That way of thinking, alongside Rin, will temper him enough that he won't grow desperate about it. He will be able to accept failure much easier.
Archer Emiya is the definitive tragic hero of the fate series, I can think not of a single other hero who had it worse than him
I agree to an extent although people like Diarmuid Spartacus Artoria (she legit almost ends up just like him) and some others I cant name went through some rough shit
well, there's angra mainyu, i think in the myth, angra mainyu was just a normal person until he was randomly chosen to take all of the world's evil simply by the villagers torturing his existence in every way, all so they could force him to accept to become the evils of humanity.

He lived his whole life trying to become a superhero. Something that would be impossible the longer he walked along that path. No matter what he could do the only reward that laid ahead was betrayal and dissatisfaction.
Its soul shattering to realize all this was because of the traumas of the fuyuki fire. Blaming himself for abandoning the people that died there just to save himself. But what could he have done? A 7 year old child walking through that hell would've died a hundred times before being able to help a single life. That guilt and trauma pushed him to idolize the man thar saved him, then taking on his dream to save everyone, just to atone for a sin he placed upon himself. No one hates shirou emiya more than himself.
His survivor's guilt is not the root cause of his wish to become a hero of justice. When he had finally collapsed after walking through those fires and curses, he was a shell of a human being, basically dead in mind and his body on the cusp of following.
When he was saved by Kiritsugu, his first thought was that he also wanted to be able to smile like that. That became his obsession down the line. His admiration for Kiritsugu, the gratitude for saving him and everything else came afterwards. He knows that there is nothing he could have done to save anyone from the Fuyuki fire, that it was a miracle to have been a single person able to return to a normal life after that disaster, however he has the conviction that those deaths cannot be allowed to be meaningless and that he also has the responsibility to make up for them.
It serves to reinforce his ideal to be a hero of justice. You might say that the fire is an indirect cause of him finding that smile beautiful but I consider them to be separate causes with the latter being the more prominent one since Shirou in UBW chooses to hold on to that feeling even with everything he learned and experienced.

He associates saving people with happiness because of the envy he felt towards kiritsugu's smile when he saved him, but his guilt also prevents him from enjoying simple happiness like hanging out with saber and rin without kicking himself for it. Thus reinforcing his thoughts that Saving lives = happiness.
While shirou is a naturally good person, it's the guilt and the deep rooted subconscious pursuit of happiness that shaped his life and had him push away his loved ones until he had nothing but the ideal and those bad choices ultimately created a situation where he felt betrayed by his borrowed ideals
You make good points, about the survivor's guilt being the mother of all fuels for his heroism and why he doesn't allow himself to enjoy simple times with some exceptions(cooking).
However, I'm steadfast in thinking that Shirou finds beauty in that ideal and in trying to live like that, it's what allowed him to get back up and surpass Archer afterall. I'm happy to have read your viewpoint though. It's not as if there was ever truly a singular cause behind his drive.

Also just quick note, I know it gets confusing sometimes but the version I was talking about was archer.

Though my interpretation is that Shirou's survival guilt isn't quite a natural emotion he experiences, but rather one that he believes he *should* feel because that is how a human would respond to such trauma, he is so empty and broken after the fire that he was like a machine, and to become human he unconsciously manufactured this feeling of guilt to give himself a justification/pretext for why he has to become a Hero of Justice, when in reality he wants to become one due to his admiration of it, but he doesn't feel like that reason is valid enough on its own; sacrificing your own well being to save people just because you think it's a beautiful way to live is "distorted", but if it's out of guilt it becomes a lot more human and understandable. If you've read Tsukihime, it's similar to how SPOILERS

To think that Fate Shirou avoid this path just for the fact of love someone more than his ideals.
But well, he end up executed at a certain point of his life. He lives a few years more than Archer did.
Also, Fate Shirou had to keep traveling even after his death. But at the very end, he finally meets his beloved one and reach peace.
In my opinion, Fate is a love story. UBW is an idealism story. And Heaven’s Feel is a betrayal story. Each of them completely different from each other.
Fate route is just a very watered down version of HF and a mix of UBW

You all forget 1 thing. Shirou become Archer in his timeline because he doesn't love Saber. So in 3 routes we know, there's no way Shirou could become Archer because he has Altria/Rin/Sakura to love.
My point is the power of boner is the thing that prevents a person from making contract with the freaking Alaya.
If you want further evidence, look at EMIYA assassin. Dude never met Iriviel so he contracted with the freaking world.

Saber route is just the most similar to the route where Archer is absend and Emiya became Archer (and Shirou didn't save Saber heart).

But yes, you're right, she did save Archer by showing him that he can move from the past. He may be stuck as a counter guardian, but at least he can now move forward with a smile. Betrayed by everyone, even your own ideal. But still he didn't give up. He still held on to his Ideal. This is regular Shirou Archer
Now if this was his Alter self. This would be darker and more edgy becuase that one has dropped every shard of his Ideals and accepted that he was a ruthless killing machine.
Hell, his regular archer self hates him and wants kill him.
His alter isn't edgy, it's just fucking full on sad, he needs to have a journal because he keeps losing his memories, his body is slowly breaking down and he lost his some of his senses, he can't even taste food anymore.

He had to kill an entire cult because he won't be able to defeat Kiara if he won't.
Which means he killed children and people who did nothing wrong so much that he became so broken that he became a killing machine. He accepted that killing is a must to finish his job. And he also overused his magical circuits which in turn made him darker than EMIYA.
Until the localization team fcked up and 'whitewashed' him.

also it didn't state that Emiya Archer is the LAST ..
also its not about the main story but the Modern and Future Heroes.. Also always remember that out of all canonity the throne of heroes is the most canon timeline in nasuverse.. since everything is recorded and canon in that area

@@alokrip9226 Incredibly late but it was in the visual novel before Archer vs Shirou when Saber questioned him about atoning for his sins and he started laughing.
I suppose the only hope for the still human Shirou is that he can use what he gained from Archer to not need to make the deal to become a hero. And that Rin and the others around him can somehow protect him from himself.

No, ItachixUchiha419 is right. Shirou is fine with making all of the same decisions that Archer made but at the end still maintaining his belief that everything he did and his ideals were right. The thing that would stop him from going down the exact same path is having people that would understand his ideal and reasoning like Rin or Sakura and possibly Saber who would support him and possibly make it so that he would never have to make a pact with Alaya for power. In the end that's what really spelled the end that Archer faced, he had no true allies and was never understood so he had to rely entirely on his own insufficient power and abilities.

I want various stories of EMIYA like what he did after UBW or what he did after Stay Night before Reaching Artoria or how he is studying in clocktower and maybe doing some missions for them ...there are so many possibilities yet we only see him in Fate Stay Night and Grand Order
...he could definitely appear in Lord El Melloi or Fate Strange Fake ...yet we never see his cameo in any other Nasuuverse story...he should be used more like he is one of the most interesting and charismatic character in whole NASUVERSE
I wish we also see Archer show his own tears since he's alone mourning about his ideals that being a Superhero will mean saving others proven horribly wrong in reality but Ufotable never even bothered to animated his moment!

In reality if you really think about it, a man goes through this and ends being in a bad place. This can haunt you as a reminder of your own past perseverance and failure. This to me reminds me of myself of helping people a lot and a lot of good men like this end up in a very bad place.

Its when you have your priorities fucked and dont consider yourself at all, or youre not sceptical or cautious enough with people/immediately trusting of them.
In archers case it was probably mainly the first two. Not considering himself is obvious, and treating everyone in the same value, and totally leaving behind the only true allies he actually had (rin and sakura mainly, combine with failing to save saber).
Thats kinda why shirou has a happy ending in all three routes because he at least chose the people he could trust in some way shape or form.

A movie that depicts Emiya Shirou's wretched Hero's Journey would be amazing, but utterly broken, dark and devoid of any mercy.
The worst part is...we only wanna see cuz we know EXACTLY how it ends.
Even as Archer, Emiya was still a hypocrite though... though, I feel like UBW gave the best closure as a route precisely because of how human it felt thematically.
Umlike Fate, which idealizes all the way, or Heaven's Feel which, despite my love for Sakura's character, had him throw it away for the girl, UBW brought a sense of closure in that he accepted his false convinctions even as he worries that he'll still walk down the same path as Archer did.
But, if you consider Fate/Zero, there's a real sense of catharsis in the route... to an almost ironic degree.
Though, I somehow like Sakura as heroine the best despite Rin being so goddamn adorable.
And a girl like her is loyal.
She'd been crushing Shirou for ages.
The Tohsaka sisters have similar taste in men...which makes it kinda hard to root for one or the other...ugh.
Though, apparently in Fate/Apocrypha's world.... that Shirou does have bouth sisters.
Sakura Matou is Sakura Tohsaka in that world, and likely looks the way she should've pre-crest worm implantation.

You need something related to the hero in question, it may be something related or something the hero has, and if I well remember, assassin was a fictional character, so, if I could have a super metroid cartridge, with 100% game completion, I could have a chance to actually summon samus, who has saved the universe from Space Pirates, Phazon, Ancient evils (prime hunters), brains and X parasites, maybe her final phantasm is the hyper beam and due shooting is obviously an archer kind
To be clear a Heroic Spirit CAN be fictional but they need to have both a legend significant enough to be recorded into the throne of heroes and a similar enough person to serve as the foundation for that legend. Sasaki Kojirou was a swordsman that didn't actually exist but he was able to be summoned from the Throne of Heroes anyway because he fulfilled those requirements. Theoretically if there was a bounty hunter sometime in the future that closely matched Samus Aran but had no legend of their own then it would be possible to summon them as a stand-in for Samus. However, I really doubt you could use an SNES cartridge as a catalyst since it wouldn't be significant to the actual nameless Heroic Spirit. Such a summoning would either have to be random chance, personality matching, or forced.
Pretty loose if you ask me. By those merits the in-universe church could actually summon jesus as a caster class or at least the ruler class. The catalyst is also there from the shroud to the spear that pierced him.
Actually Jesus would be summoned into the Saver class which is specifically reserved for Saviors. Buddha was summoned the same way. (And yes this is a legit canon thing that has happened.) However, they are Divine Spirits instead of Heroic Spirits so they aren't recorded into the Throne of Heroes. The only way to 'summon' them is to pray and hope they answer you.

I would like to see a Fate anime where a version of Kiritsugu summoned as an Assassin would battle a version of EMIYA as an Archer.
So an animated version of Fate/Grand Order.
Obviously Archer would win, since Kiritsugu doesn't actually posses much combat prowess

Let's not forget Archer is quite skilled and fast, by the time Kiritsugu prepared to fire his bullet Archer would have already fired his swords or threw Kanshou and Bakuya at him, forcing him to dodge and eventually be trapped by the Triple Linked Crane Wings Technique.
Read a fanfic called Fate Fake Dreams....Kiritsugu is summoned by Caster as assassin instead of Sasaki Kojirou . Its a scenario where Kiritsugu had visions in his dream about the 5th Holy Grail War and of what would become of Shirou in the future. So he trains Shirou from an early age, not only in his projection magic but also trains him into a next 'magus killer' to save Illya from the Einzberns. Its a very well-written fanfic. In this story Kiritsugu, instead of burdening Shirou with an impossible dream like becoming a "hero of justice", instead deliberately burdens him with his regrets and more achievable goals like saving Illya.

Fate is interesting that circumstances shape whether certain person will end up hero or villain at the end of the story...
all members of Shirou harem tried to kill him, but....
-Illya - after finally finding family love, she stops her revenge against Shirou and frees herself from Einzgern brainwashing.
-Sakura - after Shirou loves her, trauma doesn't turn her into a monster
-Rin - (she tried to avoid it as much possible, but was ready to kill Shirou, plus in contrast to Illya and Sakura, her Grail wish was selfish). In the end she finds reasoning beside her pride as magician.
-Archer - proving that even Shirou can become villain. betrayal, backstabbing, kidnapping of love ones. Plus he was willing to forsake all people that he has saved, by destroying his history.
this goes further....
-Lancer - he can be apathetic minion simply fullfiling Kirei demands, or he can reclaim his heroism like in UBW
-Caster - although her fate, cannnot be changed she is still very tragic character
-Rider - she can be viewed as mindless minion blindly following orders, or she can find sympathy and love for Sakura ...

Archer does not qualify for the Saber Class.
In fact, his most suitable class might be Caster, since he's a mage to begin with, and the class skills of Item and Territory creation would greatly benefit him.
Item creation would likely make his projections way more efficient or faster, and the same goes for Territory Creation, which might be usable to create an area to gather mana to fuel Unlimited Blade Works for a longer period of time.

He actually does qualify for the Saber Class. There was a set of cards released a while back that listed Servant info and depicted them in the various Classes they qualified for. In the case of EMIYA, I believe the only class he doesn’t qualify for is Rider.

Yeah, Nameless in Fate/Extra is a Shirou Emiya that was chosen to represent all the nameless, unknown heroes in legends. Shirou decided to forsake his name to honor that role. So that is a Shirou that is really in the Throne of Heroes.

You know, UBW would be a greater power if in every blades inside of it, there are memories of tragedies of those who held the real sword, and that should anyone touch the sword or weapon, no matter on which part of the item, they would relive the memories and feel the feelings of those original wielders. It would be a crazy mental attack in a fight.

archer's story is precisly what made me love his character so much. he's still, by far, my favourite anime character and favourite FGO servant (first one i grailed to 100 and maxed bond level :D). conversely, and this may seem weird to some, i dislike (young) shirou strongly. i wouldn't say that i hate him, but he was extremely annoying in FSN and just as annoying in UBW. so far, he's a lot more tolerable in HF. i'd have to say it was because he insisted on protecting saber, even though it's her JOB to protect and fight for him, often causing more trouble for her. like others, i'd love to see an animated series or even just a film about archer's path in life and as a counter guardian, even though we know how it ends.
Your whole reason to dislike shirou is literally reason why archer become archer. If shirou was a 30 years old man and FSN was a tragedy you wont be saying exact same thing
I've noticed the stark difference between those who've read the visual novel, and those who've watched the various anime adaptions. Visual Novel readers tend to really enjoy Shirou's character, while anime watchers do not.
Why is that? Because alot of Shirou's actions aren't easily understood unless you hear his thought process provided in text. I'll go to scenes of the anime on TH-cam and see fans comments completely misinterpret Shirou's intentions, often assuming he's being self righteous, arrogant, or completely ignorant. When in fact his actions are often a result of something more complex.
Perhaps his greatest motivator for many of his actions throughout the story is the following:
His immense survival guilt following the great fire. Shirou would think back to how he had left others to burn, as they begged for his help, and as a kid he abandoned them as he searched for a path to salvation from the hell he found himself in. After he was saved, he began to believe that he had no right to survive the tragedy, that those who died were far more deserving then him. This is where he started to put others before himself.
His survivor's guilt is so bad that he will not let himself enjoy various outings throughout the story. Like the outing with Rin and Saber, at one point, he realized he was actually enjoying himself. And as soon as he realized that, he mentally beat himself up, and told himself he had no right to feel happy there.
Another primary motivator: his connection with Archer. People think he's being arrogant and self righteous when it comes to Archer. In reality, Shirou was enraptured with Archer from the very beginning. And he always did notice their similarities, especially when others would make passing comments about it. This is where the resentment set in. Shirou already resented himself, so it was natural that it got directed to someone so like himself. What's worse, he sees his ideals, the ones he desperately clings to as his one reason to live, twisted beyond comprehension. All of that is hard to accept, so Shirou would act in a way that is "truly unlike him" as Saber puts it. And Shirou agreed with Saber. Archer brings out a side of Shirou that he never experienced before.
I could go on and on. Like Fate Route Shirou's view of Saber isn't "She's a woman that needs to be saved." He grows to truly understand her, through his visions, and sees she lived a tragic, yet honorable life. He didn't want her to regret her life, he wanted her to move on, find her own happiness, and to love herself. Which is ironic, because the same could be said of Shirou, because his future path to Archer is eerily similar to Saber's path to the Holy Grail.

@@jackmayor3574 you make a compelling argument. i have heard before that shirou tends to be more well liked by those who have read the vn. i have a tendency to highly dislike characters who behave similarly to shirou in the stay night route and it is unfortunate that that was my first introduction to him as a character as it still mars my opinion of him years later, but i do grudgingly like him a bit more in heaven's feel and in the illya spinoff. maybe if they had allowed viewers (who did not read the vn) to see what shirou was thinking in the original anime, more people would've liked him.
Same thought! I am not a fan of Shirou in the anime. But I do understand his character and why he does what he does since I have read the visual novels. I just find a compelling and tragic backstory more appealing. And I don't feel the same way all the time, I just think when it comes to Archer and Shirou. Archer is more interesting and compelling that makes me love his character more.
