Having my kingpins and spindles changed out this week. It was to be a one day fix. Peterbilt at Springville UT ordered the wrong spindle for disc brakes and now we're on day 4
It's not a truck repair video until it includes the phrase.. "this is how I broke my face".

That was a very interesting job to watch but I'd never tackle it myself. Well done EZ, with no injuries too! Just went back and watched the original kingpin video. Boy those things were stubborn! Now I understand why you were hesitant to do the ones on the Pete. Here's a chuckle for you Ezra, your injury reminded me of an old story. I had a buddy who was a heavy truck mechanic. He was standing up on the frame of a tractor working on something that required a BFH. Just as he swung the hammer, he lost his balance and the hammer struck the tire of the truck. Bounced back and hit him right in the nose. Busted his nose, OUCH!!!

I want to thank you. I watched a bunch of videos on kingpins and you explained it the best. I did not enjoy it either but they wanted $2500 per side. And more for the ball joints and cross tube. Cross tube was ceased and it took me using a large pipe wrench and a 3 ton floor jack to get it to move. I had to save the cross tube because everyone is out of stock on so many parts. Thanks again.

G’day day Ezra you are amazing and as I have said before you always do a really good job on what ever you are working on and there’s one thing no one could call you lazy on your mechanical repairs ect. I can see how you hurt yourself last time, your knowledge of mechanics and how you work buy your self is a real credit to you, you just have to take a look at old Red how you found her in a terrible state and nearly all the work you have done on her yourself and how she looks now is a real testimony of your mechanical ability. reaming king pins was the job everybody hated,i broke two fingers had a black eye and black nails,as you say if the come out easy its not to bad,great video e z your content is always very educational.

As i mentioned in another vid i found my way here via Twinsticks, Def glad i took the time to watch this entire build so far and look forward to seeing what else you do to Ole Red.
Glad you identified the brake hone so there's no confusion. However, you neglected to properly identify the hammer, which is a Type 1 BFH. The Type 1 BFH is specifically approved for kingpin persuasion and steel toed shoe testing when dropped from workbench height.
Bfh's are sized according to stubbornness...lol
I feel your pain with you giving yourself a black eye...I did the same thing while driving the axle out of a forklift that was used inside of an industrial deep freezer. My 12lb sledge hammer turned my drift into a projectile that destroyed my knee. I couldn't remember the last time I wanted to cry! LMAO After dragging myself back to my work van and regrouping I finished the job up...Lesson learned!

Getting them apart is the worst part when they come apart without too much fight it's not the worst job in the world

I used to own dump trucks and like you did all my own mechanic work. I loved using those Kiser bushings. They held up better and didn’t have to ream them. Enjoy your videos

Man you're doing it the hard way that single lock sometimes can be hard to get out what you should do is take a torch to the opposite end of the thread on the lock get the lock nice and hot with the torch once it gets red hot squeeze the handle for the oxygen to blow through the center of the lock smack it one good hard time it'll come right out.. do your best not to heat the axle just the lock that will allow it to collapse on itself you're welcome😉

Another informative video Ezra, I cant imagine why any mechanic would only replace one side of a kingpin set? Obviously they're not as conscientious as yourself.
Could've been whoever owned the truck before didn't want to pay a mechanic to do the other side

Sent mine off for new pins, new steers and alignment. Couple months later tires are wearing. Jack it up got play in the pins both sides. Axle was hogged out. Had to pull it send it out to be bored and bushed. The shop that did the job said it was fine when they did the pins. Lesson learned do it yourself it’s done. 👍

I had a 4300 international one time that was only 2years old when they went bad and we had to cut em out with a torch in order to replace the darn things. They were a pain in the ass to get oit but once they were out it went back together great and we havent had to replace em again and that was 9 years ago
I don't think the factory uses antiseize on anything

Did my lift axles, and after one day spent heating beating and cutting to remove ONE pin, I bought a tiger tool king pin press. Never regretted it. Especially since it's a write off. Lol I used Dayton king pin sets, actually had one set of the three I bought were no ream. Liked them better, but they still needed a little reaming, just not near as much. Still hate doing king pins. Lol
Iv got a press I modified to work if they get really suborn I just don't do kingpins often enough to justify the tigar tool

I hear ya. I kinda looked at like what it would cost to pay a shop to do em. Figured by the time I paid someone else, the tool more than paid for itself. Still have the steer axles on both my trucks to do eventually. So why not. Lol
Thanks for that important safety info about safety glasses being important but not full protection for the entire face ! I think if I do these in the future I'll try a ball peen hammer or powered hammer . Actually I worked in a shop in the military and we had a large steel drift that had an 4-5' rebar handle and that was for slinging the biggest of sledge hammers we had ; although for the small stuff I used sockets and/or brass drifts with adjustable/locking pliers but when things got lacks with no sight of safety monitors we would do what you did due to that way being easier and faster .
Unless I don't have a choice, I always use the Kaiser no ream kits, or similar kits by other manufacturers. So much easier than installing the thin plastic lined bushings then having to ream them to make them fit.

I've been turning wrenches over 25 years and honestly safety glasses, gloves, steel toes and PPE in general sometimes doesn't matter wether you're wearing it or not depending on what you're doing or working on. Some jobs are 'knuckle busters' no matter what. You're swinging a BFH or turning a long ratchet or breaker bar and stuff happens. The safety glasses probably would've shattered or done more damage to your eye if the socket directly hit you in the eyeball. I've seen all kinds of stuff happen in shops. One of the usual things is for metal filings, slag or rust chunks making their way UNDER the safety glasses and them actually making it WORSE by 'catching' the debris and helping to 'channel' the crap into your eyes. Same thing with gloves. You'll bust a knuckle or smash your hands even if you are careful from time to time and the gloves aren't really going to lessen the blow. Kingpins are a ball buster to begin with especially when they're seized/ your from the rust belt. Definitely a lazy ass move by the P.O. to only do one side. Steering and suspension parts should always be done as a pair. No reason to put off the other side when usually its wear becomes accelerated when the opposite sides components are fresh and tight. Old Red is looking awesome as usual Ezra! Keep up the great work!👍😁
Don't forget doing brakes as a pair too. Depending on the DOT inspector that can be a problem, besides the fact that your braking force changes .

Oh absolutely... Brakes go without saying as doing them as a pair, especially a pad slap. It would be not only a lazy move but a safety risk to just do a single side of your brakes. It's going to be worn unevenly and compromise the braking force for sure. Probably make it pull to one side as well. No good indeed.

I do king pins enough to the point that I bought the tiger tool king pin press and it saves you so much and especially in the rust belt.
Those kaiser quick kits are you best thing since diced bread.
Ezra, another interesting video. As for the kingpin being different on one side - might have chewed up the thrust bearing on the road and felt really loose; time is money and they chose to do the damaged side and get back on the road. Not ideal but sometimes stuff happens.
Funny I always had to drop kingpins into dry ice for the night and then finish the job in morning. I worked for Freightliner and Peterbilt

There is another channel called Semiworking where they do suspension work. He has a drift with a handle. Maybe it’s commercially available, but really all one would have to do is take a piece of round stock and weld on a handle. It’s a suggestion so you don’t hurt yourself again.
I’ve also noticed that he takes the wheel and hub off together using a hand truck to get the lift to get it all off. I’m not saying that it’s right or wrong as doing it individually has advantages. It could save a step in your busy schedule.
That would require a second person to hold it a pair of vice grips on a drift would work as well

I did mine 2 times on my 1987. But last time with my sons and our shop mech I upgraded with disc brakes.

We only changed the ones that were worn, maybe different if a owner operator.
I used to hate doing that type with the cotter pin ( pinch pin). Always an absolute pain to get out

Damn easy. By the time you get done with that truck it's all going to be brand new. Don't know if you remember but I'm a retired diesel technician I'm very well remembered doing kingpins always hated doing them because they would fight me all the time God they were a bastard sometimes they would come out but most times they wouldn't. You got lucky with yours yours just kind of popped out you made it look easy. But anyway great video thanks sir bringing us along.

It is not a easy job on a truck. But doing that job on a transit or highway bus is even more fun due to the lack of space in the wheel well.
That didn't seem too bad. I did the kingpins on my 65 Ford van about 50 years ago, it was a pain getting the tapered pins out. Whacked my hand with a hammer and had a knot on it for several years. I don't imagine it hurt as much as breaking your face.
