  • ►Another one of those jobs that you will probably have to complete on your BMW X5 is rear control arm replacement. New BMWs have control arms that are made to be replaced as a whole when replacing the bushings, or when there's contact with a curb or object in the road. Because of this, it's imperative that these rear control arms are serviced regularly. Thankfully, this design makes it easy to replace the control arms and bushings with minimal experience.
In this DIY, Gareth Foley, FCP Euro's BMW Catalog Manager demonstrates the step-by-step process of replacing the rear control arms on his very own BMW X5. Follow along to learn how to do this in your garage or driveway at home.

Excellent video! Would love to see a follow up on removal and installation of the REAR COIL SPRINGS. They can break and do wear out over time. I have done it on an E70 without specialty spring compressor tools. Not a fun job. I would really like to see how Gareth would tackle the job.

Great video, really helped me out when replacing the upper arms! Considering replacing the integral link and lower arm ball joint…I didn’t see a link to the tool used in the video. Am I just missing it?

Gareth, you probably know this, but often you see two different hardware sizes on a bolt like that so someone with only one size of each can still often get it apart. At least that is what I heard. However, nowadays I feel like manufacturers don’t care about that sort of thing. Then again, maybe there are still engineers with a heart at BMW thinking of the little guy doing diy 10 years after the car is originally purchased. Also, where can I get a tshirt like the one you are wearing? Long sleeve would be great. Thanks for the video. Been thinking of picking up an F15 X5.

Thanks for the content. It’s helped me replace the front & rear shocks, front thrust rod bushing, brakes and engine & trans mounts on my 2015 X5 with 89k. This has made the front of the car much more stable and smooth now. However the rear has a nasty vibration when you get up to 70mph+. I’m not sure what the culprit is. I have no play in the rear wheel when I jacked it up to see. I’m not sure if it’s the control arm or the swing arm bushings? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the recent X5 videos. I have a e70 x5 with 140k miles, how do I know if I need to replace the rear control arms? I have replaced the majority of the front suspension, rear shocks and bushings, and front tie rod assembly in the past 2 years

    • @fcpeuro

You will want to look out for any clunks in the rear, you can jack the vehicle up and pry at the bushings with a pry bar, and or if you take it for an alignment, sometimes shops will be able to tell you if they have worn if they have a hard time aligning the vehicle.

@@fcpeuro thanks for the reply. my alignment guy did mention on the left front wheel, he couldn’t get any negative camber on it, while the right he could. Do you have an idea what part might be affecting that?
