(Also the tornado is an easy choice for a special move)
I personally think Tangle and Whisper being OG's from the IDW comics makes more sense to have em be base roster characters And then since they came later, and everybody would go absolutely nuts over them, having Surge and Kit as DLC would be crazy And then I add Aiai as a guest character because banana

My dream Sonic fighting game is a 3D arena fighter. This game has some unique universal mechanics like the spin dash, homing attack, 3v3 team mechanics, taunt buffs, and installs (including super forms). My base roster is: 1. Sonic: An easy to learn rushdown character. He has a lot of moves from Frontiers, including the ability to make clones/afterimages of himself with the phantom rush. 2. Tails: Your standard zoner, but with the ability to fly. He can throw wrenches, use the different functions of his arm cannon, and swap between different gadgets to throw out. 3. Knuckles: A powerful character with some slow but strong attacks that are set up by throws. One of Knuckles' command grabs is him drilling into his enemy while traveling forwards; if he hits a wall, he will drill throw it with his captured opponent. 4. Amy Rose: She is an athletic all-rounder. She uses a mix of hammer-based moves and tarot card-based moves. 5. Cream & Cheese: The premier puppet character; Cream can send out Cheese to attack for her. For Cream's transformation, she summons in Gemeral to replace Cheese as her puppet. 6. Shadow: He is another rushdown character that has a good mix of melee and ranged attacks. For one of his supers, he can choose between a couple of doom powers to buff himself with. 7. Rouge: A tricky setup and knockdown character who can place bombs on the battlefield. She also has the ability to steal meter. 8. Omega: A powerful big body who is deadly at both range and melee, but is slow and cannot combo well. He has claws, machine guns, homing lasers, and much more. Omega's level 3 super is him unleashing his full arsenal. 9. Eggman: Another big body. Eggman uses an improved version of his mech from Sonic the Fighters that includes different parts from different machines from across the series. He also has the ability to summon different badnicks. 10. Metal Sonic: Yet another rushdown character. He has the ability to copy one of his opponents' moves with a command grab. His transformation is Neo Metal Sonic, which also has a super variant. 11. Sage: A very technical character. Sage summons different parts of the robots from the Starfall Islands for most of her attacks; Sage summons parts of the titans for her supers. Like her father, she is able to summon in robots. 12. Espio: Espio is a tricky all-rounder. He uses a variety of ninja techniques (both realistic and fantastical techniques). 13. Vector & Charmy: Another puppet character; Charmy launches opponents into Vector, who does most of the damage. The two of them are connected by the combi-ring from Knuckles' Chaotix. 14. Silver: Silver is a very powerful character, but he has to manage a psychokinesis meter in order to use his more powerful attacks. He can use his telekinesis to grab his opponents, projectiles, traps, and even parts of the stage and launch them. 15. Blaze: Can uses her fire attacks in a variety of ways. She moves very gracefully and quickly. 16. Big: The joke character. He is a grappler who can use his fishing rod. Big can also fish up different things and throw them at his foes. 17. Jet: Jet primarily uses his fans to fight, but he can hop on a few different types of extreme gear to rush around at the cost of an air meter. Jet can also summon Wave and Storm to assist him, either regularly or by spending the air meter to have them hop on extreme gear. 18. Mighty & Ray: The classic duo. Mighty is the primary fighter who fights with counters, martial arts, and the different elemental shields. Ray comes in occasionally as an assist. 19. Trip: She is a footsies-based character who uses a spear and the different chaos powers. 20. Fang: Fang uses a lot of ranged attacks that involve his popgun or various gadgets. He is able to summons Bean and Bark as assists. Fang's transformation is him hopping on the Marvelous Queen. 21. Tangle: Tangle is a versatile combo grappler who can use her tail in a myriad of ways. 22. Whisper: A zoner who uses the wisps in a variety of ways. Whisper can set up floating diamond devices that interact with her wisps. What do you think of this roster and the mechanics?
I was thinking of the Avatar character from Sonic Forces as the final character, because it's like your technicaly having your Sonic OC in the game that can represent the usage of the Wisps, while also being the Mii character of the roster. I also think a sub menu to pick different variants of the characters that would most likely have different variants, like Sonic, could allow there to be more character options, without necessarily having a new character that could just be an Echo of the original (kinda like how Super Smash Bros Ultimate does it). I also think there should be a sub menu for group characters (like the Chaotics) to play as one of the characters individually, or primarily play as either one of them, but they are still fighting as a team (Kinda like Banjo and Kazooie).
The variants idea you've got is done in traditional fighting games like Melty Blood (with the 3 moon phases for each character) and Capcom VS SNK (with its grooves). It's a neat sort of system that technically increases the character roster without increasing the number of actual characters.
I like how you included some of the IDW characters, it would be interesting seeing the comic characters in a game let lone a fighting game. If there would be a Sonic fighting game then I would like it to feel something like Fighterz. With all these characters the moveset they’ll have would be super unique and fun to mess around with. I’m still hoping for a fighting Sonic game one day in the future.
More picks I thought of: - King Arthur and his ultimate is fighting on his horse - movie sonic with his movie moveset and Ben Schwartz voicing him - guest Sega characters like AiAi, Billy Hatcher, Joker/Morgana, anthropomorphic Yakuza etc. - Dark Sonic/Lancelot/Mecha Sonic would be a dream come true for me 🥲
Fadel faced two of the biggest challenges that someone who designs a fighting game faces, the roster and the characters' moveset. I personally would put the main characters and the most recurring ones (including those from IDW) as characters in the initial roster and I would put some as DLC. Of course, this will depend on the story mode and yadda-yadda-yadda, but it would be cool, for example, to have Mighty in the game and his ending in Arcade mode to reaffirm what was said in Tails Tube with him and Ray walking around the world and crossing paths with Sonic at some point, or Mecha Sonic and show how his life is with the Scrapniks and if they managed to fix the Egg Carrier to leave the island and see other places, etc. As for the gameplay style, I personally prefer traditional 2D, but I think an interesting mechanic would be for the characters to have skins that can change their moveset. So if you prefer a specific moveset, you can play with the one you like best, like modern Sonic having the moveset from Battle, Frontiers, and so on. can it be a bit difficult or boring to program? yes, but I think it can generate a very good and cool result
Yk what? I would put Classic Sonic, Surge and Werehog as DLCs. Instead I would put Marine, Mephiles and Trip. Other characters that could be DLCs other than the forms could be Gamma, Sticks, Bark, Bean, the IDW Characters or even Lyric. (Oh and you could also include Fleetway, Dark and Ultra Sonic)

Pretty funny. I've been working on my own concept fighting game for the franchise, I feel the best way would be taking a DBFZ/ MvC route where you can do some crazy shit while also making it accessible for newer fans that dont play fighting games. Plus you can still have some typing of characters, ( Melee, zoners, etc.) Which really can show off the pros/cons of each character so they dont just play the same.
If they made a fighting game, I would demand a stage that shows Starline dying in the background on repeat for the entire round. On a more serious note, I think you could have Cream be a glass cannon. You have her trying to stall the round long enough for either vanilla or Gemerl to come and one shot the the other player, but so that cream isn't to OP, she lacks in bulk and physical strength. Yes, I am stealing that idea from a One punch man game, and I'm not ashamed to admit that
Here is my personal insane pick for a fighting character if a Sonic Fighting game was ever made: The End When playing as The End, you play as a miniature version of the corrupted Surpreme Titan. The End runs on all four legs and is the heaviest character on the roster. One of its moves would be using all its arms to charge a massive "spirit bomb" to release at any moment, not only does this attack do a lot of damage, but just like Frontiers, everytime you're hit with it, it slightly lowers your opponents max health. The Ends Titan also still can use some of the stuff that Surpreme once used, like Surpremes gun being uses for long range and short range clobber attacks. For a final smash or level 3, whatever have you, The End, in the form of the moon, completely replaces the background and yells "The End comes for you all" before connecting its cord to The End Titan and supercharging it, causing The End to have a 1.5× attack multiplier and a ×2 speed bonus, as well as less landing endlag.
I’m imagining a story mode that has this reality altering being summoning a bunch on Sonic characters across time and space to battle for its amusement, and the end of the story mode is trying to gather the chaos emeralds from different stages to face this guy like he’s Galeem.
I lowkey imagine the Chaos having something like a mech similar to their TSR car or even Tron Bonne. Other than that, I can also see the game using cameo assists instead, so at least most of the series can be represented in some manner. It's a good solution for characters like Sage or the Chaos that may not have a clear, comprehensive moveset, but still have cool ideas (Sage summoning different variety attacks from Titans, summoning different Chao types that induce different status alignments). Also works for groups like Chaotix, the Babylons, and the countless "Metal Sonics" out there.
Funny enough, I also made a Sonic fighting game roster a few months ago since I was bored. My roster of 25 was Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Eggman, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Metal Sonic, Sage, Silver, Blaze, Cream & Cheese, Big, Trip, Mighty, Ray, Fang, Tangle, Whisper, Espio, Charmy, Vector, Zavok, and the Forces Avatar.
I love Honey but she was literally unfinished in the original game and wasn't officially added in the game until the 2012 release, not mention her being a hidden character over Amy and not just available on the css like everyone else.
In general I think this is a good list, but I gotta change something. Firstly, I think for the Chao, it could be something like they did in TSR, where there’s the neutra, hero, and dark chao as complementary, while the main one leading them is Omochao. I think that adds more representation to him, but if they wanna make Omochao the announcer of the game or something like in Riders, I’d understand if they didn’t want to have him playable. But the most important change I would make here is switch Emerl for Gemerl. In general I think it’s better since they’re very similar characters, and it would make the most sense especially if there’s a story/campaign mode of sorts for the game, cause then it’s another character added to the story, cause obviously some characters being there doesn’t make sense, so the more in the story the better. And they’d serve the same purpose in gameplay and have basically the same move set anyway since they’re the same type of robot, so I think adding him makes much more sense. And maybe Gemerl could be a skin for Gemerl, unless they wanted to create a different move set for the two of them, but I don’t think they would do that since they’re so similar in powers and mechanics
If there was any worry on Chao getting beat up, they could be inside some kinda Omochao-mobile, so he takes all the damage and has all the funny reactions, and can generate whatever goofy stuff they work with like a karate platform or Chao fruit trees. I feel like Tangle and/or Whisper would be a launch character and Surge would be the "woah shit they did it!" reaction first or second DLC wave character, though I could see a launch Surge and then Tangle and Whisper being two slots in a Wave 1 DLC pack dealie. They feel different enough in move types that it'd be hard to justify them being a duo character, but, I also wonder if they'd be a hard sell to SEGA, taking up two(three if Surge counts) slots in a game focused on vanilla Japanese-made Sonic characters... Ever since seeing that X Sonic SRB2 mod's Super Sonic battle mode I'm stuck imagining all this as a Budokai type game, if one could get a decent way for the non-speedsters to catch up. How does DB do that, I need to open one of my copies of the games and check 🤔
Love this topic! I always imagined that 1v1 2D fighter would be the way to go, but now I am thinking that a Pokken-style fighter could be pretty good. Personally, I would probably have Espio as his own character. He is unique enough thanks to his ninja gimmick, but Charmy/Vector could still be a packaged character. I would actually put Whisper and Tangle ahead of Surge and make her the DLC character. Sonic would obviously be treated like Goku, but idk if Werehog makes the base roster over a potential Super Sonic slot, but I admit that Black Knight Sonic or Super Sonic would work really well as DLC characters. Still, really solid roster!
This might be too complicated, but I think for Emerl, there could be a function in the code where if the opponent is using a different character, some of Emerl's moves are similar to them. Then if Emerl is in a ditto match, Emerl only uses their own moves from Battle And since Classic Sonic is his own character, I think the classic iterations of characters could be their own slots for DLC down the line, having their own differences (with exception to robots like Metal, Mecha Mk I, Mk II, Silver Mecha, etc)
I agree with many of the choices but I would personally save Surge, The Chao, Sage, Werehog Sonic, and Classic Sonic for dlc because they are likely going to sell and I would add in Tangle who would be a faster Dhalsim that is a glass cannon, Whisper who can be a zoner, and a original character that would serve as the boss of the game.
I do think for base game at least they'd prioritize Super Sonic over Classic or Werehog Sonic just so they have 1 playable super form by default, then the DLC could have a mix of alternate Sonics and more character's super forms, in addition to brand new characters But imagine if they made it faithful to the games where super forms are really good offensively and don't take damage from enemy attacks, but their health bar slowly drains as the round progresses
Personally speaking I would replace Werehog with Honey. One because I always prefer original characters over variants but the biggest reason being because of her being known for being a secret character in Sonic the Fighters. I think it'd be such a cool reference if she was a hidden unlockable in a new Sonic fighting game. Now I know she's technically only limited to the classic verse for the time being but I could easily see them reintroducing her into the modern universe through the game's story mode, you could honestly just repeat how they did the exact same thing back in post-boot Archie. That and it would be cool to have another female character on the roster.
Okay but hear me out. Grab that idea of different alts like Black Knight Sonic, Frontiers Sonic, Werehog, Hammer Amy, Card Amy, Tails in a mech, etc, and apply that to a Warriors style game
If they do fighterz style sonic fighting games that would be raw as they could do like crazy assist and combo styles depending on the characters you pick for ur three character slots

Really like the concept and dig your choices! If they did go a Smash direction, The Rookie being like the Mii Fighter with customization features, including DLC, would allow for Wispon abilities being chosen and ultimately having a get out of jail card for any character who did not make it. Justice for Tangle and Whisper btw.😂
A sonic fighting game could be super fun. Just not sure what type of fighting game it would be, probably more around MVC feel, where you can do fast movement, jumping around, cool combos and supers. 💙
As someone who's only fighting game experience is platform fighters, I can totally see Surge and Kit as a duo character (think Ice Climbers in Smash) where you control Surge, but Kit will also be there trying to help, and can be ko'd separately from Surge. She did say they're a "package deal" after all.
You NEARLY leave our girl Cream out of the roster, preposterous! I really dig the idea of Emerl being the Mokujin, or most properly, the Combot of the game. The player could customise his moveset accordingly to their favorite playstyle, mixing and matching moves from different characters, or he could randomise the character style as a whole for each round. If I would pick anyone from the IDW comics it would have to be Belle; she's perfect for a scaredy cat type of fighter, the kind of character that inavertedly beats the shit out of her opponent by cowering or tripping over her tail, while also pulling out a confident punch or clever hit here and there. She'd be a fun one, and a handful of cute/gag characters are always great to have ✨💥💫
I more or less agree with the list minus: The Chao.. don't want Katie to cry over Chao abuse😓 And Sage mainly because.. I mean all things considered there really isn't a lot that we know Sage can do, I'd replace them with Mighty And Ray. Personally I don't get all the Zavok hate and just not wanting to give this guy a chance, I honestly figured people would want the bad characters to be given another shot. If I had a wishlist I'd just want it to Include Neo Metal Sonic; post IDW we need to see this man in HD💖💖

my dream sonic fighting game would be a smash clone, i know a lot of people want a sega smash but i think if we include EVERYTHING from the sonic franchise (all the games, cartoons, and comics) there are so many different sonic characters that you could easily have a smash ultimate sized roster.

I think I know how we can solve the super sonic problem. how about we have basic level 1 super, level 2 super, and level 3 super. But, the characters that are known for having a super form would have an alternate version of the level 3. how it works is for the normal level 3 you do a certain button input, bam it's just a cinematic super. but if you input a different input they turn into their super forms.
Sega actually tried something like this in the last Olympic game, dream brawl. It's very ambitious despite segas budget, though it's definitely nothing compared to a SmashBros game 😢 Do you remember Sonic Smackdown? They did shadow really well there

if we lived in an IDEAL universe, they could bring back Mighty and Ray as modern characters. Mighty would probably be an in between of Sonic and Knuckles, having comparable speed and strength. He'd also probably have this move where he increases his defense for a short while, letting him tank more hits than usual. (Or it could function like how Kirishima uses his hardened form in MHOJ2) Ray would be more of a support character, using a few similar moves as Mighty, although a bit weaker. I'd imagine him setting up combos, stunning and/or debuffing enemies for other fighters. (All these ideas could work if we were talking about a 3v3 arena fighter but still)
I'll say this, if they were to make a Sonic fighting game, they need to dig into every single move, attack and power that each character has used that is in their arsenal from the games thus far, and also from the IDW comics (because they're connected with the games). Also they need to do the exact same thing that they did with Dragon Ball Raging Blast, where if you're selecting a character, you should be able to pick a transformation along with picking different variations instead of being separate slots. For example movie Sonic and modern Sonic shouldn't have separate slots. I think this is the best thing that they should do by far. Dragon Ball Raging Blast did it right, and they Sega should really implement this in their Sonic fighting game.
i think an arcade fighter would work considering they technically had one, but honestly i'd rather an arena like sparking zero. there are so many characters in sonics cast there needs to be a game to showcase them and something like that would work incredibly well.

I have two crazy ideas for a Sonic fighting game. The first would be a Mario vs. Sonic game, which may be more possible with the Olympics gone. Having the 20 regulars being the starters with their own unique movements, and then adding more characters (from each series' history) through unlockables and DLC would be amazing. Gameplay-wise, I always imagined it being Pokken/Tekken-style but more action based. The second would be (brace yourselves) a Sonic fighting game using the multiverse aspect from Sonic Prime. You would have the normal cast but each variant (either original or from the past) would be voiced by a different VA, sometimes a VA who's already voiced the character in the past. It'd be expensive as hell, but come on, wouldn't it be cool?
I'd only swap out Infinite and Zavok just so the Chaotix can have their own spots, they're all too unique, especially Espio who was practically made for fighting games with his diverse skillset (he was in Sonic The Fighters after all).
You should able to unlock supersonic and super classic as a separate character even if he can turn into super in normal gameplay so super classic can turn into hyper and super modern can turn into perfect super (supersonic 2). Imo big should be really slow but the most powerful because he is canonically the strongest sonic character. And the chao should start of as a hero chao but the more it damages you or you damage it it should transform into a normal then dark chao and dark chao should be strongest chao. Although I’m not a fighting game player so idk if this would even be good but I think it would be cool. Emerl should have a Gemerl skin. I think you have got the perfect representation for the sonic characters and then you can have characters like mighty or tangle or mimic as dlc or something. Except there’s one problem with this roster Where’s Hatsun the pigeon from sonic 06?
I think if we got a Sonic fighting game, it would likely be either an arena fighter or a platform fighter, since those are more accessible to a younger audience. I'd go for an arena fighter cause like you said, it can represent the speed of these characters better. It has to be like Sparking Zero level tho, not Jump Force.

Having the Chao as one character seems redundant when you can already have Cream command them like she does with Cheese, though tbf you did forget about her until last-minute lol. I'd probably have the same list but replace the Chao and Surge, because to me IDW characters scream DLC-exclusive, with both: -Mephilis (for a surprise '06 rep, that'll hook the fans who unironically love that game) -Zazz (another Zeti, and he's second to Zavok in popularity among them, also my favorite so I'm a little biased lol)
Kinda want a DBZ FighterZ route for Sonic or just take the Tekken or Virtual Fighter but slap it in with Sonic (Basically Sonic The Fighter 2). If they took the smash route, Ngl it’s gonna flop. Nick All Stars n Multiversus had there moment but the hype went down cuz of character roster n lack of content. NAS sequel n Multiversus update fix the content part but still it’s too late n I don’t think both companies will capture the same hype again. Smash Bros will still be king thxs to the third party characters n legacy it made so if Sega/Sonic Team just make Sonic Smash Bros, then i doubt it will sell well. Reason why I want a FighterZ Sonic game is cuz imagine the team give an anime vibe for Sonic n gang, especially with intros, outros, specials, and maybe dramatic finish too. For 3d Sonic fighter, I would like it, especially for stage transition like Tekken n I just like Sonic Fighters wackiness.

My dream Sonic fighting game is a 3D arena fighter. This game has some unique universal mechanics like the spin dash, homing attack, 3v3 team mechanics, taunt buffs, and installs (including super forms). My base roster is:
1. Sonic: An easy to learn rushdown character. He has a lot of moves from Frontiers, including the ability to make clones/afterimages of himself with the phantom rush.
2. Tails: Your standard zoner, but with the ability to fly. He can throw wrenches, use the different functions of his arm cannon, and swap between different gadgets to throw out.
3. Knuckles: A powerful character with some slow but strong attacks that are set up by throws. One of Knuckles' command grabs is him drilling into his enemy while traveling forwards; if he hits a wall, he will drill throw it with his captured opponent.
4. Amy Rose: She is an athletic all-rounder. She uses a mix of hammer-based moves and tarot card-based moves.
5. Cream & Cheese: The premier puppet character; Cream can send out Cheese to attack for her. For Cream's transformation, she summons in Gemeral to replace Cheese as her puppet.
6. Shadow: He is another rushdown character that has a good mix of melee and ranged attacks. For one of his supers, he can choose between a couple of doom powers to buff himself with.
7. Rouge: A tricky setup and knockdown character who can place bombs on the battlefield. She also has the ability to steal meter.
8. Omega: A powerful big body who is deadly at both range and melee, but is slow and cannot combo well. He has claws, machine guns, homing lasers, and much more. Omega's level 3 super is him unleashing his full arsenal.
9. Eggman: Another big body. Eggman uses an improved version of his mech from Sonic the Fighters that includes different parts from different machines from across the series. He also has the ability to summon different badnicks.
10. Metal Sonic: Yet another rushdown character. He has the ability to copy one of his opponents' moves with a command grab. His transformation is Neo Metal Sonic, which also has a super variant.
11. Sage: A very technical character. Sage summons different parts of the robots from the Starfall Islands for most of her attacks; Sage summons parts of the titans for her supers. Like her father, she is able to summon in robots.
12. Espio: Espio is a tricky all-rounder. He uses a variety of ninja techniques (both realistic and fantastical techniques).
13. Vector & Charmy: Another puppet character; Charmy launches opponents into Vector, who does most of the damage. The two of them are connected by the combi-ring from Knuckles' Chaotix.
14. Silver: Silver is a very powerful character, but he has to manage a psychokinesis meter in order to use his more powerful attacks. He can use his telekinesis to grab his opponents, projectiles, traps, and even parts of the stage and launch them.
15. Blaze: Can uses her fire attacks in a variety of ways. She moves very gracefully and quickly.
16. Big: The joke character. He is a grappler who can use his fishing rod. Big can also fish up different things and throw them at his foes.
17. Jet: Jet primarily uses his fans to fight, but he can hop on a few different types of extreme gear to rush around at the cost of an air meter. Jet can also summon Wave and Storm to assist him, either regularly or by spending the air meter to have them hop on extreme gear.
18. Mighty & Ray: The classic duo. Mighty is the primary fighter who fights with counters, martial arts, and the different elemental shields. Ray comes in occasionally as an assist.
19. Trip: She is a footsies-based character who uses a spear and the different chaos powers.
20. Fang: Fang uses a lot of ranged attacks that involve his popgun or various gadgets. He is able to summons Bean and Bark as assists. Fang's transformation is him hopping on the Marvelous Queen.
21. Tangle: Tangle is a versatile combo grappler who can use her tail in a myriad of ways.
22. Whisper: A zoner who uses the wisps in a variety of ways. Whisper can set up floating diamond devices that interact with her wisps.

I was thinking of the Avatar character from Sonic Forces as the final character, because it's like your technicaly having your Sonic OC in the game that can represent the usage of the Wisps, while also being the Mii character of the roster.
I also think a sub menu to pick different variants of the characters that would most likely have different variants, like Sonic, could allow there to be more character options, without necessarily having a new character that could just be an Echo of the original (kinda like how Super Smash Bros Ultimate does it). I also think there should be a sub menu for group characters (like the Chaotics) to play as one of the characters individually, or primarily play as either one of them, but they are still fighting as a team (Kinda like Banjo and Kazooie).

The variants idea you've got is done in traditional fighting games like Melty Blood (with the 3 moon phases for each character) and Capcom VS SNK (with its grooves). It's a neat sort of system that technically increases the character roster without increasing the number of actual characters.

If there would be a Sonic fighting game then I would like it to feel something like Fighterz. With all these characters the moveset they’ll have would be super unique and fun to mess around with. Fadel faced two of the biggest challenges that someone who designs a fighting game faces, the roster and the characters' moveset. I personally would put the main characters and the most recurring ones (including those from IDW) as characters in the initial roster and I would put some as DLC. Of course, this will depend on the story mode and yadda-yadda-yadda, but it would be cool, for example, to have Mighty in the game and his ending in Arcade mode to reaffirm what was said in Tails Tube with him and Ray walking around the world and crossing paths with Sonic at some point, or Mecha Sonic and show how his life is with the Scrapniks and if they managed to fix the Egg Carrier to leave the island and see other places, etc. As for the gameplay style, I personally prefer traditional 2D, but I think an interesting mechanic would be for the characters to have skins that can change their moveset. So if you prefer a specific moveset, you can play with the one you like best, like modern Sonic having the moveset from Battle, Frontiers, and so on. can it be a bit difficult or boring to program? yes, but I think it can generate a very good and cool result

Pretty funny. I've been working on my own concept fighting game for the franchise, I feel the best way would be taking a DBFZ/ MvC route where you can do some crazy shit while also making it accessible for newer fans that dont play fighting games. Plus you can still have some typing of characters, ( Melee, zoners, etc.) Which really can show off the pros/cons of each character so they dont just play the same.

Here is my personal insane pick for a fighting character if a Sonic Fighting game was ever made: The End
When playing as The End, you play as a miniature version of the corrupted Surpreme Titan. The End runs on all four legs and is the heaviest character on the roster. One of its moves would be using all its arms to charge a massive "spirit bomb" to release at any moment, not only does this attack do a lot of damage, but just like Frontiers, everytime you're hit with it, it slightly lowers your opponents max health.
The Ends Titan also still can use some of the stuff that Surpreme once used, like Surpremes gun being uses for long range and short range clobber attacks.
For a final smash or level 3, whatever have you, The End, in the form of the moon, completely replaces the background and yells "The End comes for you all" before connecting its cord to The End Titan and supercharging it, causing The End to have a 1.5× attack multiplier and a ×2 speed bonus, as well as less landing endlag.
I’m imagining a story mode that has this reality altering being summoning a bunch on Sonic characters across time and space to battle for its amusement, and the end of the story mode is trying to gather the chaos emeralds from different stages to face this guy like he’s Galeem.

I lowkey imagine the Chaos having something like a mech similar to their TSR car or even Tron Bonne. Other than that, I can also see the game using cameo assists instead, so at least most of the series can be represented in some manner. It's a good solution for characters like Sage or the Chaos that may not have a clear, comprehensive moveset, but still have cool ideas (Sage summoning different variety attacks from Titans, summoning different Chao types that induce different status alignments). Also works for groups like Chaotix, the Babylons, and the countless "Metal Sonics" out there.

In general I think this is a good list, but I gotta change something. Firstly, I think for the Chao, it could be something like they did in TSR, where there’s the neutra, hero, and dark chao as complementary, while the main one leading them is Omochao. I think that adds more representation to him, but if they wanna make Omochao the announcer of the game or something like in Riders, I’d understand if they didn’t want to have him playable.
But the most important change I would make here is switch Emerl for Gemerl. In general I think it’s better since they’re very similar characters, and it would make the most sense especially if there’s a story/campaign mode of sorts for the game, cause then it’s another character added to the story, cause obviously some characters being there doesn’t make sense, so the more in the story the better. And they’d serve the same purpose in gameplay and have basically the same move set anyway since they’re the same type of robot, so I think adding him makes much more sense. And maybe Gemerl could be a skin for Gemerl, unless they wanted to create a different move set for the two of them, but I don’t think they would do that since they’re so similar in powers and mechanics
If there was any worry on Chao getting beat up, they could be inside some kinda Omochao-mobile, so he takes all the damage and has all the funny reactions, and can generate whatever goofy stuff they work with like a karate platform or Chao fruit trees.
I feel like Tangle and/or Whisper would be a launch character and Surge would be the "woah shit they did it!" reaction first or second DLC wave character, though I could see a launch Surge and then Tangle and Whisper being two slots in a Wave 1 DLC pack dealie. They feel different enough in move types that it'd be hard to justify them being a duo character, but, I also wonder if they'd be a hard sell to SEGA, taking up two(three if Surge counts) slots in a game focused on vanilla Japanese-made Sonic characters...

Love this topic! I always imagined that 1v1 2D fighter would be the way to go, but now I am thinking that a Pokken-style fighter could be pretty good. Personally, I would probably have Espio as his own character. He is unique enough thanks to his ninja gimmick, but Charmy/Vector could still be a packaged character. I would actually put Whisper and Tangle ahead of Surge and make her the DLC character. Sonic would obviously be treated like Goku, but idk if Werehog makes the base roster over a potential Super Sonic slot, but I admit that Black Knight Sonic or Super Sonic would work really well as DLC characters. Still, really solid roster!

This might be too complicated, but I think for Emerl, there could be a function in the code where if the opponent is using a different character, some of Emerl's moves are similar to them. Then if Emerl is in a ditto match, Emerl only uses their own moves from Battle
And since Classic Sonic is his own character, I think the classic iterations of characters could be their own slots for DLC down the line, having their own differences (with exception to robots like Metal, Mecha Mk I, Mk II, Silver Mecha, etc)

I agree with many of the choices but I would personally save Surge, The Chao, Sage, Werehog Sonic, and Classic Sonic for dlc because they are likely going to sell and I would add in Tangle who would be a faster Dhalsim that is a glass cannon, Whisper who can be a zoner, and a original character that would serve as the boss of the game.
I do think for base game at least they'd prioritize Super Sonic over Classic or Werehog Sonic just so they have 1 playable super form by default, then the DLC could have a mix of alternate Sonics and more character's super forms, in addition to brand new characters
But imagine if they made it faithful to the games where super forms are really good offensively and don't take damage from enemy attacks, but their health bar slowly drains as the round progresses

Personally speaking I would replace Werehog with Honey. One because I always prefer original characters over variants but the biggest reason being because of her being known for being a secret character in Sonic the Fighters. I think it'd be such a cool reference if she was a hidden unlockable in a new Sonic fighting game. Now I know she's technically only limited to the classic verse for the time being but I could easily see them reintroducing her into the modern universe through the game's story mode, you could honestly just repeat how they did the exact same thing back in post-boot Archie. That and it would be cool to have another female character on the roster.

As someone who's only fighting game experience is platform fighters, I can totally see Surge and Kit as a duo character (think Ice Climbers in Smash) where you control Surge, but Kit will also be there trying to help, and can be ko'd separately from Surge. I really dig the idea of Emerl being the Mokujin, or most properly, the Combot of the game. The player could customise his moveset accordingly to their favorite playstyle, mixing and matching moves from different characters, or he could randomise the character style as a whole for each round.
If I would pick anyone from the IDW comics it would have to be Belle; she's perfect for a scaredy cat type of fighter, the kind of character that inavertedly beats the shit out of her opponent by cowering or tripping over her tail, while also pulling out a confident punch or clever hit here and there. She'd be a fun one, and a handful of cute/gag characters are always great to have ✨💥💫

my dream sonic fighting game would be a smash clone, i know a lot of people want a sega smash but i think if we include EVERYTHING from the sonic franchise (all the games, cartoons, and comics) there are so many different sonic characters that you could easily have a smash ultimate sized roster.

I think I know how we can solve the super sonic problem. how about we have basic level 1 super, level 2 super, and level 3 super. But, the characters that are known for having a super form would have an alternate version of the level 3. how it works is for the normal level 3 you do a certain button input, bam it's just a cinematic super. but if you input a different input they turn into their super forms.
Sega actually tried something like this in the last Olympic game, dream brawl. It's very ambitious despite segas budget, though it's definitely nothing compared to a SmashBros game 😢

if we lived in an IDEAL universe, they could bring back Mighty and Ray as modern characters. Mighty would probably be an in between of Sonic and Knuckles, having comparable speed and strength. He'd also probably have this move where he increases his defense for a short while, letting him tank more hits than usual. (Or it could function like how Kirishima uses his hardened form in MHOJ2)
Ray would be more of a support character, using a few similar moves as Mighty, although a bit weaker. I'd imagine him setting up combos, stunning and/or debuffing enemies for other fighters. (All these ideas could work if we were talking about a 3v3 arena fighter but still)
I'll say this, if they were to make a Sonic fighting game, they need to dig into every single move, attack and power that each character has used that is in their arsenal from the games thus far, and also from the IDW comics (because they're connected with the games). Also they need to do the exact same thing that they did with Dragon Ball Raging Blast, where if you're selecting a character, you should be able to pick a transformation along with picking different variations instead of being separate slots. For example movie Sonic and modern Sonic shouldn't have separate slots. I think this is the best thing that they should do by far. Dragon Ball Raging Blast did it right, and they Sega should really implement this in their Sonic fighting game.

I have two crazy ideas for a Sonic fighting game.
The first would be a Mario vs. Sonic game, which may be more possible with the Olympics gone. Having the 20 regulars being the starters with their own unique movements, and then adding more characters (from each series' history) through unlockables and DLC would be amazing. Gameplay-wise, I always imagined it being Pokken/Tekken-style but more action based.
The second would be (brace yourselves) a Sonic fighting game using the multiverse aspect from Sonic Prime. You would have the normal cast but each variant (either original or from the past) would be voiced by a different VA, sometimes a VA who's already voiced the character in the past. It'd be expensive as hell, but come on, wouldn't it be cool?

You should able to unlock supersonic and super classic as a separate character even if he can turn into super in normal gameplay so super classic can turn into hyper and super modern can turn into perfect super (supersonic 2).
Imo big should be really slow but the most powerful because he is canonically the strongest sonic character.
And the chao should start of as a hero chao but the more it damages you or you damage it it should transform into a normal then dark chao and dark chao should be strongest chao. Although I’m not a fighting game player so idk if this would even be good but I think it would be cool.

I'd replace the chao with Mephiles. Big already fits the bill for a joke character and Cream has her chao cheese do the attacking for her.
I always envisioned a Sonic fighting game to be 2D with the aesthetic of Fighterz. I can feel like you can do more with that than an arena. Sure, an arena fighter makes sense on paper for the Sonic characters, but I just personally prefer a 2D fighting game with an IDW-like aesthetic
Edit: Also I do NOT want the classic characters in the game. At least not in the base roster
Agree on modern for the main roster, but a Classic Character pack for post launch DLC would be nice.
Mighty, Ray, Fang, and Honey (For the Sonic the Fighters throwback) would be a fun grouping of characters.

Having the Chao as one character seems redundant when you can already have Cream command them like she does with Cheese, though tbf you did forget about her until last-minute lol.
I'd probably have the same list but replace the Chao and Surge, because to me IDW characters scream DLC-exclusive, with both:
-Mephilis (for a surprise '06 rep, that'll hook the fans who unironically love that game)
-Zazz (another Zeti, and he's second to Zavok in popularity among them, also my favorite so I'm a little biased lol)

Kinda want a DBZ FighterZ route for Sonic or just take the Tekken or Virtual Fighter but slap it in with Sonic (Basically Sonic The Fighter 2). If they took the smash route, Ngl it’s gonna flop. Nick All Stars n Multiversus had there moment but the hype went down cuz of character roster n lack of content. NAS sequel n Multiversus update fix the content part but still it’s too late n I don’t think both companies will capture the same hype again. Smash Bros will still be king thxs to the third party characters n legacy it made so if Sega/Sonic Team just make Sonic Smash Bros, then i doubt it will sell well. Reason why I want a FighterZ Sonic game is cuz imagine the team give an anime vibe for Sonic n gang, especially with intros, outros, specials, and maybe dramatic finish too. For 3d Sonic fighter, I would like it, especially for stage transition like Tekken n I just like Sonic Fighters wackiness.

I would rather have a 3D arena fighter on par with Sparking zero. This will better allow them to show the characters' unique movesets. They should also make this game cell shading as that would make the game and the characters actions visually appealing.
