Guys, as mentioned in the vlog, the aviary will be going ON THE FARM LOT, not our backyard where the structures were just being assembled. We could not assemble on the farm lot yet because of on going work. Also, the aviary will be taller. Basically, flipped on its side instead of tall so the birds can fly straight. Thanks for watching!!! ❤️

Cheers, Mikey. Your vlogs are always the topic of discussion here at home. It's like we're also involved in all the mabuhay farm activities. Anyway, we can't wait for the farm (and the new aviary) to get set up ❤

Mikey, also, for the new aviary in the entrance space add plastic slats for an extra barrier!
in your house, the house is the barrier if a bird got out it still has to go a while to get outside with this setup a smart quick bird can and will pass you by to the outside (Murphy's law!) heavy plastic slats will prevent this ever from happening because even if a bird gets out it will be halted by the slats and not fly out when you exit because you didn't notice it was missing or you left a door open (that happened more than once to you in other scenarios, no critique it's just the human condition we all do it) so have that extra safeguard and build it in there.

Seems like a small detail, but That Step is the beginning of the Grand Entrance.
Glad that you improved it. 💕

Some fish that I'd suggest for the pond are:
    1. Giant Gourami- they're mostly omnivorous but leaning towards herbivory so it could help control aquatic plants should they grow rampant.
    2. Oscar- the climate is perfect for them and they're one if the more relatively peaceful large cichlids. A small group would look great in the pond, especially if they pair up and each pair would stake out territories in different areas of the pond. Easy to find in pet stores as well and are quite affordable. They're also omnivores so they are easy to feed.
    3. Tinfoil Barb(or alternatively, Bala Sharks)- both species are great schooling fish of considerable size.
    4. Pacu- A small group would look great in a pond. Beware of their bite though as they have strong jaws that are adapted to crush nuts in their native habitat. Relatively easy to find in pet stores, especially juveniles, and are affordable.
    5. Common Pleco( Sailfin Leopard Pleco as an alternative)- for algae control. Very easy to find in pet stores, especially juveniles, and very affordable.
6.Iridescent Shark Catfish(they are usually sold in stores under the name of Hammerhead)- a small group would be perfect for the pond as it is the perfect size for them as they grow to a considerable size. They're also the ones that are used in Cream Dory.
Redtail Catfish might be possible, but the other fish they'd be sharing the pond must be big enough that they cannot fit them inside their massive mouths. Tiger Shovelnose Catfish could also work but they need a relatively fast current. Bichir might work, but their mostly bottom-dwellers so you won't see them that often, and they are carnivores as well. They can also leave to water for long periods at a time, provided that they stay moist.
Snakeheads are a no-go as they can leave the pond to look for other bodies of water. Arapaima can be pretty dangerous as a threatened fish might leap out of the water and can cause injury with their hard bony heads. Jeremy Wade of River Monsters fame got injured by one when it barreled towards him and hit him hard on the chest. They will also ambush any small terrestrial animals by the water's age. Alligator gar can also cause injury if it accidentally bites someone and can also ambush terrestrial prey by the water's edge. Tigerfish are also a no-go as they can leap out to snatch birds flying low to the water's surface and they can cause injury with their teeth.

This is a very cool vlog!
I love the progress on the pond, when it’s all done, it’ll be epic! It almost seems that ya’ll should tile the pond for the final step, with some really cool colored tile (LOL, leave it to me to complicate things).
This is a really interesting method of constructing the new Aviary. My Engineer DNA was triggered as you described this. I can think of a couple ways to achieve some height with these constructs if you wanted it, and I think it would be solid enough to easily withstand elements. It wouldn’t be as high as the current aviary but another eight to ten feet should be “do-able”. I wonder if some additional width would be good too, with the constructs it would be easy enough. It’s funny, as you started to describe the double door entry to the aviary, I was thinking the exact same thing.
It’s really awesome to see Raquel!! Happy Birthday to Chloe! I love the idea of dinner at the pool. This gave me a great idea that I may try in the future… ;).
I totally understand and respect RJ’s with to be more off camera than on but, I feel compelled to mention… I would have loved to watch RJ cook his recipes for this dinner. I feel in my heart that RJ has so much talent, I wish he felt more comfortable sharing in this format (I think he’d be surprised how much love there is for him out here “in the wild”) but, it has to be his decision.
I think it may be time for a new music parody featuring Billy as a grown up… :). This comes from seeing you bring back your Filipino Tutorials. I really hope you make this a “thing”. Brining this back with a new, adult perspective through the lens of all the life experience you have now I think would be a total hit!! I hope you don’t mind me saying this, you’re like a fine (with alcohol) wine, you’ve gotten so much better with age. That OFW skit is total fire!! As you know, I made a ton of Filipino friends when I worked on the Cruise Ships and, my Dentist is Filipina, the nurse at my doc is filipino, I’m working with a realtor (for a new long-term thing) who is a Filipino… I love Filipino people!
Thanks for sharing your days! It’s great to hang out when we can. Ya’ll be safe! I’ll see ‘ya next time.

Wondering, will you still bring them plants for enrichment? I know it is costly, but it also so good for them too? Or will you attempt a more "catio" style full of things they can hide in and hang onto for enrichment, but won't be destructible? Or perhaps a mixture of the two?

  • @TheBioExplorer

It looks like a great plan for the parrots to be outside. People do something similar here but it's not usually for 24/7 or all year... but of course you have better, more constant outdoor conditions. I'd still feel like I needed to bring them in during a typhoon. Where I live, we frequently have hurricanes. I would have to bring the birds inside or be nervous the whole time... but I think that is because, like Ligya did... our parrots often share our living spaces and just use the outdoor aviaries as extra living space. ❤

  • @sampaloc8793

A custom built aviary would be A LOT better. This is probably the shortest outdoor aviary. Birds also need to practice their vertical flying.

Amazing plan, love to be nosy😅, but if you'd like to hear more for your aviary, I think you can extend ur pre fab frame upward but in a shape of a dome, possible to be made of a mesh wire, you can refer/google, e.g. philippine eagle' dome cage, or bird sanctuary in typical zoo. Anyways, just a suggestion... Nice going and Kudos 👍💯

You can also plant trees instead of placing them in pots for the aviary. The birds poo can fertilize them into health. That's why, is it okay to use concrete flooring? You guys will figure it out. You always do.
Koi or fish with bright color might be a good addition. Koi are hardy and live a really looooooog time. 😅

Will you keep the cages in the new aviary, it seems at times to be their safe haven., but being outdoors, feeling the breeze and having more horizontal space is going to be awesome.

AVIARY COMMENT - Why not set-up the new horizontal aviary on the rooftop, and connect one side to also one side of the top part of the vertical house-aviary? So it becomes one big interconnected aviary. That way, the birds can fly both vertically and horizontally in one cage. The birds will also be able to see a lot of sky and tree tops, as opposed to seeing only ground level vegetation if put in the garden. Cheers, Mikey. We love you.

Consider building the aviary foundation as a continuous 18" high x 8" wide curb and provide embedded metal plates with 5/8" studs to attach the posts into for a sturdier structure. I'm sure you will consult an engineer for hurricane forces. You will probably need to place additional bracing.

Remember not to overstock the pond! Ideally only 1-3 extra large fish in that pond. Yes, a lot of people often put way more than that and would put like 10 in there. That’s not enough space for each of the fish to be happy and comfortable, though. My guess is like 3 in there.

Ever thought of making a biotope/habitat pond with local native species? It significantly lessens the risk of invasive species escaping and the pond acts as a population refugium. Not as flashy as koi or arowanas, but more fun as you'll be working with species rarely or never kept in captivity. And the Philippines has quite a lot of weird native freshwater fish, from needle gars to glass-like perchlets, archerfish,, barbs, mullets, bass, the super-tiny dwarf gobies, even the uniquely cut off formerly marine species in Laguna de Bay and Taal Lake.

    • @AngryKittens
      @AngryKittens ปีที่แล้ว

I mean. Not dissing anyone, but koi, arowanas, oscars, etc. are so overdone. Everyone has them. Who knows maybe you could find a species that ends up becoming a pond staple here in the future, which could help with their conservation.

I think a carabao or two, and a wagon for you and guests to ride in would be so much fun for the farm; and they can pull a plow to till the fields. Most of all, carabao are just awesome (can you tell they are one of my favorite animals?).🐂

I suggest colorful cichlids also for bigger fishes, you may try Red Belly Pacu's, Oscars and Big Kois, they can all be kept together :)

Sayang yung landscape ng garden. Lalo na concrete pa i flooring. Later on, ma realize niyo na sayang yung landscape. Consider moving the new aviary sa baba ng pool sa tapat ng Kubo near sa cage ng iguanas.
