    Kermit Keith Hathorn was on intel gathering patrol in a Navy P2V on Dec 26, 1951 shen the aircraft suffered. A runaway engine was ditched at sea. Six crew survived but the pilot & Hawthorn went down with the aircraft & were never recovered. The six that survived the ditching were rescued by SAR.
    Navy Senior Chief Sean Sullivan lost his life on July 19, 2012 serving during operation Enduring Freedom. The faded rock is there for Chief Sullivan to honor his memory & in respect for his service.

      Thank you so much for all your input on who these people, I think Sarah did them a very good service by filming this clip now alot more people may take a ride out and hike up on top of the mountain to give those fine gentlemen the respect that they damn well deserved. Thanks again Sarah, you are an amazing person and you deserve recognition for what you do as well. 😊

    When the flag flies after sundown , a light is to be fixed onto the flag to illuminate the flag .

    I was stationed at NAS Fallon back in the late 70’s. The base has a SAR crew as part of the base function, mostly to provide for recovery of mishaps that occur in the area. That first thing you saw when you were approaching was the “tail fin of a bomb”, but it’s a specialized type that has a high drag, when the bomb is released those fins open up, they are referred to as “snake eyes”.
    The fiberglass “cone” looks to be the “radome” from a F-4 Phantom, probably F-4N. The “cockpit” was from a FJ-3 fury, the navy version of the F-86, the green thing that was all shot up was a LOX tank, Liquid Oxygen tank.
    Back when I was there I was living in the barracks on base. My roommate worked in the galley as the night baker, he liked that job because he worked alone all night, he made the pastries , rolls and biscuits for the chow hall. One of his other functions was to make box lunches as needed when requested. That brings me to the SAR crew, my roommate always complained that the galley captain never left him sufficient items to make the box lunches. So he was given a task one night to prepare a small number of lunches, what he did not know was the lunches were for the SAR crew and the base commanding officer who was being taken on a tour of the bombing range. So as I stated my roommate used what he was given, part of what he was given was a “tin” of corned beef for sandwiches, this tin is about 5”x5”x12”, when he opened the tin what came out was about 75% corned beef FAT with a sliver of meat in it, and he made sandwiches out of that. So, when the SAR crew landed outside, maybe even where you may have been at, they shut down the helicopter (UH-1N Huey), and they opened their box lunches and the CO found out they were given fat sandwiches they boxed them back up, got back in the helo and flew straight back to the base, landing at hanger 300 instead of the 400 hangar where they keep the SAR birds at. The 300 hangar was right across the street from the galley and the supply department building. The CO went straight to the galley, called the supply officer, galley officer and the galley captain into the officer, he gave each one a box lunch and ordered them to begin eating. Needless to say my roommate had to explain but he only did as he was told, not his fault, but after that he had keys to all the galley supply rooms and box lunches got better. I only wish I was there to be able to see the faces of the suppo and food services officer as they ate their sandwiches, I’d bet it was epic.

    • @franklentz5388
      @franklentz5388 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The suppo owns the galley as does the food services officer, if the galley issues box lunches they should be edible by anyone. I think the CO was just making a point to the suppo that the buck stops with him, pay attention.

    • @franklentz5388
      @franklentz5388 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There was a history at Fallon just before this happened. The previous CO and previous SUPPO skimmed money from a special fund designated for base beautification. Spending that money on other projects is illegal and they call that “color of money”, but what they did was basically misappropriating the funds, the CO used those funds to procure a 26 foot captains gig from DRMO, he also used the fund to pay a boat shop restore it, all for his private ownership and use. The suppo just pocketed money, when they got caught up in an audit the CO took the easy way out with a gun, suppo went to jail.

    Ha! @9:00, I am the Billy that erected that flagpole with a couple of my Fallon SAR team members. Reach out if you would like to see the pics. Also, FYI, that was a Mountain Dew can. A beer would have been nice at the time though.
    The aircraft parts are from crashes that the SAR team collected from the missions they worked over the years.
    Once you made crew chief, we would fly up there, land and you would use the rocks on top to spell your name. Once you transferred out, your name was kicked over and the rocks used for the next qualified team member. NAS Fallon Longhorn SAR shutdown a few years back and the site is now inhabited by other Navy units. It will always be ours though…SAR mountain!

    That nosecone is from an F-4 Phantom. It was a Vietnam-era front-line fighter, used by the Navy, Marines, and Air Force. The bit with the crash test dummy appears to be the rear canopy section from an FJ3 Fury. It was a Navy fighter from the 1950s. Cool video!

    • @madlift
      @madlift ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yup, FJ3, the naval variant of the Air Force's F-86. It was a superior craft in many ways. Some were modified and equipped with Sidewinder AIM-9s. First saw action in Korea but it wasn't really put into wide service until 1954. Retired in 1960 or 1961, if I recall correctly. Top speed around 690.

    Yes, you are correct about SAR regarding Fallon NAS. Every NAS has helicopter SAR teams. Fallon, Le Moore NAS and China Lake all participated for many decades in serious SAR missions for the National Park Service etc in the Sierra Nevada range and elsewhere along with their military duties. Very skilled and professional, some of the crews from Fallon and Le Moore saved a lot of civilian lives over the years. They did serious rescues on El Capitan in Yosemite and a lot more.. Shout out to the Air Force medic who chimed in here.

    They aren’t saying the rocks marking trails are bad. They want you to stop piling rocks in art like forms all over the place. They say to leave the trail markers alone. Kind of like painted rocks in national parks. My brother did training in Fallon Nevada during the Vietnam war. He was a flight mechanic in the Navy. Clearly a monument.

    The issue with cairns isn't about the small navigational ones that are built by trail maintainers and park services/government agencies. Those are fine. Those are usually Baites cairns. The problem is the proliferation of artistic rock stacking done for the looks rather than navigation. Too many people are doing this, and it's actually getting people lost who rely on them for navigation purposes, but the super large ones are also disrupting biodiversity and and they have been causing erosion issues, etc. I remember being at Zion NP last year and one of the Rangers was telling people about this at one of the other nearby parks. He said they had a lost hiker who went way off trail because they saw a pile of rocks and followed it, thinking it was a trial marker. They found that hiker about 12 hours later a good 3 miles off their intended trail. MOving those larger rocks exposes insects and other animals, even destroying their shelters. The Park Service wants people to not only stop building them but knock over them over.

    Fallon NAS has been around for as long as I can remember (I'm 65) I became the Top Gun facility somewhere in the early 90s. I have lived in this area for ever and have never heard about this place. Fascinating find. Too hard of a hike for my old knees so thank you for this video.
    FWIW I'm (bit at a time) trying to re-trace the original Central Pacific right of way and all of it's little whistle stop stations. The Transcontinental was re-aligned in the early 1900s and approximately 30 - 40 miles were abandoned, mostly along the I-80 corridor. I know that country pretty well. I was surprised to find out about SAR mountain. BTW I also love your tongue in cheek humor. Aye Aye Captain :).
    Awesome video. Thank You.

    Nevada 318 from Hiko to Lund is also a lonely road. I drove it back in the 70’s when it was gravel.

      The first time we went up to 318 after they paved it we got up there to the rock cut and had to follow a cattle drive with cowboys on horses and dogs driving them, took us about a half a mile before we could get around them...

    Sara! The Slim Princess Railroad! Carson and Colorado RR! A Lot of history there and many desert towns. I drove some of the old rail line in my jeep years back, tons of old bottles and other cool trash from a hundred years ago. I LOVE YOUR SHOW!!

    It's interesting when you mentioned intaglios and rock art. The SAR site is surrounded by several petroglyph sites, one of which is the BLM interpretive Grimes Petroglyph Site on U.S. 50. The petroglyphs are regarded to be Desert Archaic and may be among some of the oldest in the U.S., similar to some Winnemucca Lake sites which I'm documenting.

    Nothing wrong with stacking rocks when it serves a purpose such as marking a trail. The problem is lots of people make stacks of rocks just for the fun of it, and it ruins the natural beauty of a place (especially along a river) and interferes with critters' habitat.

    I'm a big Billy Joel fan, so you gave me a couple of good surprises here with song choice. Not sure the naval aviatiors would appreciate hearing the Air Force song being sung for them, though singing Anchors Aweigh on a desert mountaintop would seem a little strange.

    Also, sometimes stacked rock cairns may be historic or prehistoric shrines, especially in a place like that and away from trails! Cairns on trails likely are contemporary trail markers.

    Officers on an aircraft carrier are served their meals in the 'Ward Room'. Pilots may not wear their flightsuits in the wardroom. Instead there is a small 'Flightsuit Mess' where they may get something to eat/drink or otherwise lounge around. The Flightsuit Mess is more commonly referred to as the 'Poopysuit Mess' by aĺl those on board the carrier! Any questions?? 😅

    I spent a few days in Fallon back in my naval aviation days. Also did a survival exercise that wound up with a helicopter ride over the scrublands during which I saw a herd of wild/feral horses galloping along. Funny thing was sitting in the back of the helo I was misjudging the altitude, I though we were really low. Then passed the horses and for about 2 seconds I thought they were all about one foot tall because they looked so small 😆

    🇺🇲 I think the base does(did?) a lot of practice/training drills because, back around 2007, I was camping at Pyramid Lake, NV, and late at night I could faintly see, way off in the distance, pyros going off in the sky, exploding like pro 4th of July🎆. It was surreal. I had to look on the map to see what was out there towards the southeast, because that area is desolate, and surmised those pyros came from the military, or Fallon Navel Base doing training..???
