  • Food waste is a global problem. In 2017, Singapore alone, discarded 810,000 tonnes of food. Perfectly edible but abnormally sized or shaped food stuffs are often thrown away by vendors in order to bypass the inconvenience of inefficient packaging and customer rejection. These food resources can be collected, recycled and redistributed amongst the needy, solving two problems with one action. Singaporean dumpster diver Daniel was featured by Straits Times, Channel News Asia and more. He started Sg Food rescue with his co-founder, leading a movement in combating food waste in Singapore. The organisation has conducted four food rescue missions. This is a Food Rescue programme where vegetable and fruit suppliers are approached and asked to give away their unsellable produce. Food Rescue then distributes the produce to the needy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Food is a biodegradable product that generates business hence generates wealth for all. Food waste is not a wastage at all. It’s wealth-recycling. When people spend more on food, the hawkers, restaurants, cafes, food manufacturers , farmers are making money. They can invest in better technology and equipments. More jobs are also created. Money generated from biodegradable products must not be viewed as a waste. During recessions when everyone cut back their spending, it affects the profits of all businesses. That will real big chain-reaction issue.

You need to take into account the other problems of food wastage: Climate Change. Decomposition of food will cause the release of methane, which is a lot more stronger as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, resulting in the effects of global warming becoming worse

@@alvinmah6148 Well yes, non-biodegradable waste is a big concern, but climate change is equally as troubling. The weather becoming more unpredictable, sea levels rise, global warming, you can't just ignore all of these events that will turn into a crisis in the near future.
