    Your video is very informative. To Canadian viewers like myself I would say: I just restored an 85 peugeot with about twice as much rust as the bike in this video. This works! There are alternative products you can find. First I washed it down (using car wash soap) then buffed it by hand using meguiars ultimate compound. Then I sanded down some rust, over the bottom bracket area, which was quite bad. Used 60-grit cut in very small pieces. Held with a tweezer (for those tight corners). Sanded until bare steel, until most of the rusty red was gone. Then wet a paper towel with vinegar and wiped the bare steel. Residual rust turned black (just like "Kurust"). Then wiped it down with rubbing alcohol and ready for paint!!! I used Testor's enamel paint (for hobbies/models). The peugeot was a teal color. I was too lazy to search everywhere for an exact match so I just mixed some blue, green (and white). Came out perfect! Testors dries a bit darker so make sure the wet paint is just a tiny bit lighter!!! By mixing, you can do any color!!! Note: I would stay away from metallic colors... I used some testor's metallic Gold on another bike and less than a year later, the touch-ups have discolored to a really dark, almost black colour. I guess the metal particles in the metallic paint oxidized, and don't stand up to the elements very well. This bike I'm working on now is actually a metallic teal but I touched it up with a solid teal color. It's barely noticeable, even for covering up such a large patch over the bottom bracket. Time will only tell if the color holds up though.
    Anyway, cheers to Andy! You are an immortal bike god!!!!

    Enjoyed the restoration, in particular just using touch up paint rather than expense of full respray. Got a few bikes myself and used to do a bit of car dealing so my tip would be to use autoglym after T cutting, it is literally worth its weight in gold , will bring a huge shine back to the paint work and help protect it from water ingress or damp road conditions. I use bucket of warm water and damp cloth to apply, leave for a few minutes then buff off with soft dry cloth.

    • @pinarellolimoncello
      @pinarellolimoncello 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jack, just the polish, I think autoglym might refer to it as resin polish rather than wax polish. If you can't find it turtle wax or similar would do a good job its just that autoglym in my view is particularly good. Restoration, regeneration, resurrection, salvation, hallelujah.

    I actually am restoring an 83 Schwinn superior, however i went with a brand new powder coat, and i will reorder the original decals. Since the frame is painted a completely new color, instead of matching the details i am going with a white/black outline for the restoration. should look really nice with the new paint job. It is full fixed with no brakes but everything aside from the track wheels and toe cage pedals will be original (stem, headset, fork, seat post etc.)

    This was really helpful, thanks a lot. I was wondering if you (or anybody else) had advice on clearcoats? I've got a 1974 frame with fairly extensive paint damage/wear, the t cut has done a great job but there's still quite a lot of exposed areas. I'd quite like to keep the relic look instead of a new paint job, are there any solutions there that don't require sanding/priming the surface?

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you found the video helpful. Depending on the area, if working with a larger area I would recommend using a primer. I do know other channels such as Oldshovel use a dedicated bike spray which I’m sure doesn’t require the primer. Hope this helps good luck

    Some great advice here, thank you very much. I was wondering, would you put primer on the frame before the enamel paint if there is substantial amount of paint is missing after sanding? I've recently bought an old Peugeot and that little connecting bar in front of the back wheel and the pedal connector at the base (excuse the amateur terminology) is quite rust heavy but only surface. Want to freshen it up and don't want new paint to flake off in a few months. Thanks

    hi, i have a dawes audax from the mid 1990s which has got a lot of surface rust on and around the chainstay bridge area. It seems to have spread under the plasticky coats the factory put on . I've got most of the rust off with a little rotary wire brush attachment on a drill, thinking of wire wool to get the rest off (in awkward spots) . when I did a similar job before i used zinc primer after getting it down to shiny metal, with an automotive top coat on it lasted years.
    does that sound like a plan ? maybe use kurust for the bits i cant quite get shiny ?

    • @BikeItUK

      @@BikeItUK i just got a Thorn exp steel touring bike. Apparently most of the tubes are sealed to prevent rust . The seat tube is the only one that’s open and there is a drain plug thing at the bottom bracket which was intended to let out any moisture /condensation. Some of these sealed tubes have bottle cage screws so I’m wondering if moisture could have gotten into those tubes somehow. I could try and spray something through the screw holes to play it safe . Then maybe a cavity wax or something. Not sure yet

    Andy, Thanx for these AWESOME Tips but Curious if you can HELP us 'Yanks' across the 'Pond'? (As long as you hold No 2 1/2 Century Grudges that is). Which SUBSTITUTES can be used in place of 'T-Cut' and 'KuRust'? (Neither of which is Readily available in the US). Also will Testors Enamel Model Paint work well as Touch up Paint? Any Tips on how to 'Color Match' Touch Up Paint by MIXING Colors? Do You ever use Tiny Wire Brushes designed for Electric Hand Drills to remove Rust and flaking Paint instead of KuRust? If so and you ended up with Bare Metal do you Brush on PRIMER 1st BEFORE Applying Touch up Paint? Also curious if you ever REPRODUCED Bike Decals by Printing them up from a Computer App?
    PS- Would you consider making a Video Building up a "L'Eroica Bike" for all the Worldwide 'L'Eroica Rides'?, ALL of which contain BRUTALLY Steep Climbs and Descents. ALL of your Bike ReBuilds are BEAUTIFULLY done, but Unfortunately have the Stock Gearing which was NOTORIOUSLY WAY TOO HIGH for Climbing, ESPECIALLY for Most of your Vintage Bike Fans, Most of which are getting up there in Years (and WEIGHT). I rode L'Eroica California in Paso Robles in 2017 and '18 on a 1986 Trek 310 Elance that I modified by 'Downgearing' the Stock 40t/52t Crank x 14-28t 6 sp. FW to a 28/38/46t Crank x 13-32t 7 sp. FW. Using Mr. Tuffy Tire Liners with WIDER Tires (at LEAST 28mm, Preferably 32mm +) is a MUST along with MODERN Brake Pads like KoolStop Salmons. STRONG Brake Cables are a MUST as Well. The ~90 mi. Ride I rode had ~7800 feet of Climbs (That's ~2400 Meters for you 'Redcoats'), MOSTLY thru Potholed and Rutted Dirt Forest Roads. You pretty much HAVE TO Completely Overhaul AND MODIFY a Vintage Bike for these L'Eroica Rides, Unless OC you're Andy Hampsten, who rides it in STOCK 42/52t x 13-24t Gearing (or maybe 39/52t x 13-28t Gearing since he's in his Mid 50s and gained a Couple Kilos. He's looks a WHOPPING 68 kg. now! Us 'Plump' Americans eat WAY Too much Fast Food.) and 25mm Tubulars (Maybe 25mm Clinchers but He'd be LUCKY to fit 28mm Tires on His Bike: His 1988 Giro D'Italia Winning Bike he rides in the Longest 130 mi. Rides Every Year in L'Eroica Ca). I met Andy (No not You yet) and he's a Very Humble and Friendly 'Chap'. If ANY other 'Andy' should Ride L'Eroica it's YOU 'Mate'! I BELIEVE there's a L'Eroica Britannia in Great Britain. Maybe you've already ridden it? If so would you consider making a Video going over your 'L'Eroica Bike' Andy?
    PPS - Maybe even consider making a Video Modifying a 5 Spider Arm Double Crank by Drilling 74 bcd Holes into it to fit a Granny Gear, and fitting a longer BB Spindle ... and maybe Fabricating a Long Cage to fit a Short Cage RD, and Installing a 'Wolf Tooth RoadLlink' Derailleur Hanger Extender ... and maybe demonstrating Just How Many Extra Teeth a Vintage Front Derailleur can Pull? - Sincerely Mike.

      Wow Mike that’s some comment, firstly thanks for watching and your support. Absolutely no historical grudge my friend , we all just find ourselves here my friend 😉. Regarding the frame restoration. I’m not sure what the American 🇺🇸 equivalent to Kirust is. The UK 🇬🇧 version is made by the company Hammersite, I do know the US definitely has the same milky solution available just don’t know what it’s called.
      Regarding matching up colours I take the folks with me and I’ve even taken the whole frame to the shop with me to match the enamel modelling paint up. Any rusty areas should be removed first.
      Regarding the idea for Eroica yes definitely a good idea regarding making your bike Eroica ready. Tyres gearing etc....and making the viewer completely aware to the rules. I personally haven’t attended the event yet but plan to considering it is held less than 20 miles from me.

    Hey Bikelt,
    I have a real quick question. How do you make a bicycle rim and spokes look nice and shiny again.
    Some people say use microfibre others say steel wool. What kind of chemicals do you suggest to put on? I have heard heavy duty oven cleaner, car wheel polish, and some special online stuff.
    But when you restore your rims what do you do? I would really appreciate an answer.

    PS: the rims are aluminum i believe its an old 1980's koga miyata.

    • @BikeItUK
      @BikeItUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +popopboom Hi firstly thanks for watching, sometimes if a rim is badly rusted I will generally bin the wheel off. If I build a Fixie and buy new rims I'll keep the old ones giving me a few rims to work with. For the spokes if not renewing I will use wire wool and for alloy rims I'll use a metal polishing cream, oh and plenty of elbow grease! I generally replace the rim tape also. I hope this answers your question. All the best and good luck hope that they turn out well. Andy

    Hey Andy, Need to call on your experience to guide my project. When using a rubbing compound, such as T-Cut, does it not leave the paintwork patchy if you only use T-cut in specific areas? My paintwork is mostly good but I do want to get rid of some small paint scuffs. What would you recommend for removing a paint scuff without leaving the paintwork patchy or having to use a rubbing compound all over the frame? Is T-Cut your preferred abrasive rubbing compound? I've heard that AutoGlym Super Resin Polish has finer abrasives, which may suit the finer defects more than T-Cut. And do you finish your paintwork with any sealant or wax? I have no experience working on paintwork so any advice is greatly appreciated.
    All the best, Tona.

      Hello and thanks for watching and your support. Regarding rubbing down then yes if you concentrate all your efforts to one small area then yes after time this can and will rub paint away. I generally rub the whole frame down first and take it from there. I don’t use any lacquer on top. T-cut or autoglym are designed to take the thinnest of coats off removing scratches and restoring the colour. Start of light to begin and take it from there. I hope this helps and makes sense all the best and good luck. Andy
