    My dad when he operated radar in the air Force was sitting outside his installation having a smoke, looking out into the water, which this location looked out over a bay in Washington state, and when the fog moved he saw a Russian akula sitting there on the surface just sitting there. He called it in and unfortunately the fog got worse and he didn't get to see the action. Happened back in 1980 I believe

    Another excellent presentation, Bob. May I say the Akula model is an excellent choice in Russian submarine class models IMO, and you seem to have this one trimmed out just superb for underwater operation. I'm sure the new owner will be very pleased. I especially like the transport case, a perfect fit for this model.
    Kudos to your videographer who had done a fine job as well capturing all the pond side action..

    The case is a great shipping solution, but it seems like a bad idea for transport to and from the pond. What happens when the wet submarine is locked in with the controller and battery for the ride home? And wouldn't the foam become contaminated pretty quickly with pond water?

    Awesome. How deep have you taken it? Also, any idea why RC submarine builds don't often use brushless motors?

    • @RCSubGuy
      @RCSubGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      These cylinders have been taken down to over 20ft in depth without leaks, though in practical application you rarely stray below 2 or 3ft, and most time is spent at "periscope depth" just under the surface where it's easy to track.
      In regards to your question about the brushless motors, many people have used them, however they typically run at very high RPMs, which is not what you want for a scale submarine. High RPMs also wear our your shaft seal faster, which is undesirable. You can gear them down, but that is added complexity and space in the cylinder.

    • @RCSubGuy
      @RCSubGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Highupon - try fitting the hull halves together and clamping or even taping them in place. You can then use a heat gun (don't melt your tape!) or even boiling water to heat the offending hull section until it softens enough to conform to its mate. Give it a try! Nothing to lose...

  • @boboala1
    @boboala1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome! I love subs & sub history. Question - are the WWII model types pretty comprehensive? I mean, what about a WWII British 'S' or 'T' class model? US Gato?
    And...I've seen models with cameras, and ones shooting torpedoes. How about a comprehensive war game experience: a RC Liberty ship with magnetic detector on the hull, and a sub with model (magnetic) torpedoes that can have speed/angle/depth input prior to launch. Ship zig-zags, and sub controller has to figure out angle o the bow, etc. If the ship's magnetic detector (set to scale...like 12" below hull) detects a signal, it would be a 'hit'. Just brainstormin' on a RC sub game... ;)

    • @RCSubGuy

      I am a distributor of OTW kits, and they have a fairly decent selection of World War II era boats from the British and German navies. Revell of Germany also puts out an excellent type 7 and Gato as well.

      Trying to learn as much as i can about sub builds because i want to learn how to make something unique so explaining how it works goes a long way for me. So far what i seen is that he uses one ballast tank to control the diving which is nice because its only one control but would like to see 2 or 3 to give more control of the sub when diving to allow for different angles/degrees base on how much ballast tanks are used which would make an interesting video

    • @penlavits3305
      @penlavits3305 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wondering if he will ever push his creation to the deep depths where he test at what pressure the hull cracks but this would have to be a smart sub because rc waves wouldn't be able to reach these depths so it would have to automated which means things would be whole lot interesting if he were to start making such things

    • @JakubRC
      @JakubRC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually you're a bit wrong. The Russians call this submarine "Shchuka-B", however in the NATO countries they're called Akula. Then again, the boats which are called "Akula" by the Russians are codenamed the "Typhoon" by NATO. Now the funny fact is: one of the many "Shchuka-B" submarines is called Akula ;)
      As RCsubguy is obviously from the States which are part of of the NATO, it's proper to call that model "Akula". Cheers.

    • @getsideways7257
      @getsideways7257 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should call them "Akula class" and "Typhoon class" respectively, that ensures you are using the NATO designation.
