    Crossing side kick is what you are demonstrating in this video. Side kick from a fighting stance would be to just lift your front leg and kick out, or just pivot with your lead foot and swing around to side kick with your back leg.

    Your side kick is a mutation between side kick and back kick. Your shoulders are not supposed to be square towards the ground in a side kick, that's just a mess.
    The 'open' and 'closed' stance bit is another mutation. It's possible to initiate kicks from different footwork, but they can all be thrown from your 'open'. The step across, to make a 'closed stance' to throw your side kick from, are in no way part of the kick itself, that is just a variation on how to lead into it... you can throw the kick without that. (And you should probably learn how to, because your 'closed stance' stuff is probably what's mutating your kicks).
    Many different kung fu schools can be recognized for a style behind their basic kicks: the front chamber - raising the knee up forward in front, as the first step in lifting our leg for a kick. We can throw any of our basic kicks from that chamber, which makes it that much harder for an opponent to predict the specific kick that knee is being raised to deliver. This is something that other martial artists, outside of kung fu, have given kung fu credit for.
    Your kicks are not bad, but if you want to claim to know 'kicks of Kung Fu', then you need to learn them all over again. Your front kick is fine.

    Jake, I believe crossing in the back for the side and hook kicks is improper. This is my personal thought so don't take it too seriously. I believe using a forward shuffle or a pendulum step is more efficient in terms of speed and power. I believe crossing your legs during the set up process only leads to an unstraightened line of power and less balance. For me, keeping it in a straight line instead of crossing helps maintain balance and power as well as a speedier delivery.

    Just a few comments:
    1) love these videos!!!
    2) you reminded me very much of my head Sensei; he loves to make sport metaphors every chance he gets. It's silly sometimes.
    3) you and I do the same thing with our front kicks! Much more natural to go slightly above the belt, even we usually use it as a belt level kick.
    4) I love that you always seem so happy and joyful in every video. That smile makes me very happy!

    nice power. We used to teach the same 4, with different names.
    However, for our club it was vital to maintain vertical body stance during all kicks, front and side, especially the front facing edge of foot and the 'outside crescent' (your 'hook'). We were recommended not to 'snap' the leg into straight as this will eventually give knee problems.

      You have to remember that these are demonstrations designed to expose every aspect of each move you are trying to master. If he were not, "telegraphing" then the whole point of the lesson would be lost to the student. In an actual combat situation, this man would not only move in a non-telegraphical manner but also at lightning speed and efficiency.

    Just wondering, do you have any videos and/or opinions on some of the northern kung fu styles (idealy: Baji-quan, Pigua-zhang, Jingangbashi, and xinyi-quan)?

  • @funkadelicvideogametechnol4903
    @funkadelicvideogametechnol4903 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    My kung fu style is a praying mantis stance. you do not want to use high to the head kicks cuz it's way to easy to hook your leg with a hand wrist hook and there easy to see coming. all kicks: the front; side; round house; knife edge; wheel all come from the praying mantis stance. it's too easy for your leg to get swept in the horse stance like that.

      Hey Neil! Yes, learning at home by yourself is great! Don't try to do every style at once! Pick one style and stick with it for a while, then switch when you feel ready! I would do a few months or years of shaolin, then a few months or years of taekwondo, then a few months or years or judo, etc!

    • @markwright3569
      @markwright3569 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is not how you do these kicks properly. They may look good, but they are fundamentally flawed. You want to bring your leg up and forward and thrust it out as you are advancing forward. You would never expose your backside for the side kick. Looks more like a mule kick.

    The side kick is very clean, and I like your hook kick. But once I had shifted my play from Tae Kwon Do to more of a grappling oriented style, I found both side kicks and hook kicks dangerous against someone with good footwork and an aggressive style. Given your more square fighting stance when talking about Tai Chi versus other styles, I would think your own style would be incompatible with these two. I get more use out of a Muay Thai push kick as a substitute for both the traditional front and side kicks. I suppose my question is how do you integrate kicks that put your hips so far out of alignment with a Tai Chi style of fighting?

    • @stthomasaquarius
      @stthomasaquarius 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, there's a lot of similarity between the way a grappler will square and bisect his opponents body and the way a Wing Chun practitioner will talk about centerline theory. By both estimations, once your feet or shoulders are past a straight line to your opponent, they would consider you to be losing the fight at that point. Again, this assessment seems equally applicable to Tai Chi, though I'm not experienced enough with it to say with any authority. What are your thoughts?

    Well i wont be negative so dont think im a hating, just stating, all those kicks goes with a block which wasn't shown, the way it was shown in this video is the way they teach now and days, the original (fundamental) kicks all goes with a block, one for the face and one for the groin, so yeah... for instance lets take my favorite kick, the side kick, when side kicking with the right leg the right hand defend the groin and the left hand defend the right side face, so even if the opponent side steps to his left and kick or hit, its blocked, so yeah watch that, cause i dont care how smooth you do your kick, if it was a fight vs me, i would have seen that open spot instantly and countered either at the back of the knie, groin, kidney, face, throat or with my own kicks, the worse i could do is step towards your kick making you lose balance cause your leaning backwards with the hook and side kick, or i just side step in your front and round house kicks, cause your also leaning, it needs to be a hit and run, but i come forward with a block which pushes you back when you try to finish the snap after that i pretty much got control of your legs, i can either sweep or just grap the leg thats up... either way, even with a block, during the kicks, the front and round house are hit and run kicks, so leaning that much will make it a impact kick, you do hit harder but pretty much open when caught, giving me options....so yeah... thats pretty much it, so watch your balls man, dont forget to defend it, cause in a real fight, its gonna get squished.... have a nice day and stay safe...

    Why would a serious martial artist abandon a stable platform in order to make a kick this large, your body is excessively out of position when you execute and recovery is cumbersome? Why would you ever turn your back on a determined opponent? Why would you ever put your legs directly into the ability of the arms to deflect or grab. I can see why the Okinawans asked the Chinese for advice and then turned what they saw into the ability to fight well, there are no techniques like this on Okinawa yet they readily admit Chinese influence. Serious self defense can not possibly allow techniques with this amplitude, they are simply too large, too hard to execute and that much kinetic energy is overkill applied to a human body when vital point striking is used as it should be. Athleticism does not equate to fighting ability. The study of martial arts demands the truth as doing otherwise leaves the artist at severe risk. Sports are a different matter.

      Don't worry, these are not really Kung Fu kicks either. Jake doesn't know Kung Fu. Your points are entirely legitimate, but they apply much more to what Jake is showing here than to actual Kung Fu.
      This video has almost nothing to do with the basic kicks that exist in real Kung Fu. Please don't view Jake's stuff as a legitimate display of Kung Fu.

    Once again these are Tae Kwon Do or Kickboxing kicks...nothing near your claim of "Kung Fu" kicks. Thanks for trying though.

      These are exacttly what my sifu teaches at our school. we also have the back kick, and our side kick is a little less backward than Jake's.

    If Bruce Lee was alive Jake Mace would kick his ass so bad. Here is how he would do it. Mace would lure him into his secret life longevity garden to make believe he was teaching him about vegan gardening..then when Bruce wasn't looking he would summon his killer tortoise to bite Bruce in his balls and infect him with the dirty mouth bacteria and Bruce would die two days later. Mace would bring him back to life with one of his vegan juices thus gaining huge respect in the Asian martial arts community right back to the Shaolin Temple. He would be a hero in china were they would ask him to stay for the remainder of his life and teach vegan gardening. He would have to leave his mistress salsa partner but it would be all worth it as his name would be gold through out China.
