  • Poverty in America - It's not what you think
The Line documents the stories of people across the country living at or below the poverty line. They have goals. They have children. They work hard. They are people like you and me.
From Chicago's suburbs and west side to the Gulf Coast to North Carolina, millions of Americans are struggling every day to make it above The Line.

I am a disabled vet..I have a small pension from the V.A. I have a low paying job but can make ends meet (companies don't really like to hire disabled vets) I drive a ten year old car. I truly have empathy for these folks...the govt. bailed out the banksters and let them walk away with millions. We spent 4 trillion dollars on 2 stupid wars. Yet we cant help poor people or tax the rich a little more, we cant raise the minimum wage to a living wage to help the working poor....shame on america

As a person who was raised in poverty and currently experiencing my own financials struggles this video not only gave me hope but purpose on a deep level.
I was brought to this video because of an assignment for my Intro to Social Work class and man, I was moved by every bit of it! I have always tried to explain the same points these beautiful people made and never understood how people could still spout off the bs untrue “facts” about people who experience and LIVE in poverty. This has confirmed to me that my decision to get a Degree in social work was the best decision for my life. I hope to work on making a real change in breaking the system to STOP poverty and also help those living with poverty.

My sisters and I did not know we were poor until we went to college and learned the definition of poverty. My mother was a single parent of three, but the neighbors exchanged food and helped each other and watched out for each other. We may have been poor in finance, but we were rich in the love of our mother, each other and the neighborhood that watched and provided strength to each other and encouraged all children to get an education. The neighborhood provided a very strong support system.
Thank-you for this video. Thank-you mom for being that strong black woman. Thank-you neighborhood for being that other support system we all need.

I know that the "youngsters" joke about us Old Guys when we talk about 'The Good Old Days" but... When I was a little kid in first grade my Dad was a Janitor and my Mom was a housewife. We bought a new 3 bedroom home that I lived in from 1961 until I graduated high school in 1975. We had a new Dodge, a Travel Trailer and we made yearly visits to Disneyland by car (350 miles). Both my parents grew up in near poverty so there was no outside money or income, just the wages of ONE JANITOR. That was 1961 - 1967 when my Dad died at age 31 of a rare disease but my point is; How many janitors can buy a new home, a new car, a new travel trailer and take a nice annual vacation? Sure we had debt but nothing unreasonable.
Just compare 1962 to 2015 and you won't believe it is the same America, because unfortunately it isn't. The Rich got Richer, but the Poor got a LOT Poorer. The income gap is a systemic evil but America knows how to do it better because we DID do it better 1945 to 1970 or so. What went wrong??

    • @ArchieMakuwa
      @ArchieMakuwa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Josseph Woolfork when you have a bit of money, you should broaden your horizons and consume less of what the media says... We have our own share of South African problems but some of us are steering the country in the right direction. We don't just go killing white folks but there is a very high crime rate in certain parts of the country. I have never taken a life and I haven't bought my own personal firearms and I don't see a need. I did the training just for control and I go target every once and then...
I have plenty of white friends who I don't dream of killing...
It's difficult to judge anything in life without first hand experience.

It's easy to judge if you've never been there. The poverty trap is real and maybe some make the choice to be there but others do not. Going to college you are not guaranteed a good paying job. How many people with degrees are struggling to make it. So before you judge any one take the silver spoon out of your mouth and walk a mile in their shoes

As a "middle aged" American (57 years old) a good measure of "Poverty" is to look at your own, extended family. This will include your brothers, sisters, kids and your immediate nieces and nephews and all their spouses. Look at those that "Succeeded" and those that "Failed" and all those in-between. Since you know all these people and know their stories you get a microcosm of the greater society. Some of my immediate relatives are professionals, some are on welfare, a couple in Prison and a whole bunch in the Lower to Upper Middle Class. You will see that the Stereotypes rapidly crumble away when you know a person's "Story"...

One thing I see in this country is it is impossible for handicapped people to find work. People are forced to apply for disability because employers will not work with them to keep them in jobs they can do. It's all or nothing. I think the laws should be revised to help handicapped persons get and keep jobs. Many people on disability would rather work.

Note: In 1962, $5.00 was the equivalent of $38.22. A Union Janitor made $5.00 an hour in 1962 (SF Airport). Ask a Janitor, ANY Janitor in America today if they make $38 an hour. They would think you were crazy for even asking... It used to be, in America that if a Man were willing to work hard at almost any job he could own a home and his wife could stay home and raise the kids. WTF Happened??

randy109 Reminds me a lot of germany to and the "good old times". In the good old times even with the worst education the simple rule was: Go to like 5-6 different stores and ask for work, latest in the last one you would get a job. A pretty decent one to, work maybe would be hard, but you would get proper work protection and a proper payment, enough to be free of any kind of welfare. Times changed, today even students with bachelor and master degrees end up unemployed and in need of social welfare... Not to mention that the pay and the work conditions have become severely bad to. Lots of people have to work at least 2 jobs to make ends meet and pay their bills, and most of them despite working hard need some form of welfare or soup kitchens to supplement their income because it just by far isn´t enough to get by anymore... My mum like many grew up in these golden times, and she herself said she would have never though that things would become this bad in the last 20 years.

I agree with randy109 - my dad worked at one job, had no degree, went back to night school and got a Bachelor of Commerce, my mom was a full time housewive, we bought our three bedroom house, small with garden, and all our neighbours were a similar pattern, two or three kids, one job for the father, mother stayed at home, lots of activities for children, not too costly, these were the Fifties and Sixties, and Canada and the USA were GREAT countries, I am sad that some people had it rougher then but those small amounts of people have been used to bring in a much worse society in terms of the general economy, and we should not allow our individual and our collective memories to be erased by a indifferent media....

I was spoiled and had my college paid for, yet I was still working 40-50hrs/week during school and 60-80hrs/week over summer break at my $9/hr factory job. I didn't even need the money back then, so I don't think it's far fetched when I say that now, if I lost my professional job, I would be working at as many jobs as I needed to get 112hrs/week in to support myself until I found a new professional job. My first ever job was at McDonald's, and I'm not above going back there...

Me and my husband are below the poverty line. We make less than $12,000 a year. I am on disability and Medicaid. The problem with Medicaid here in MO is that I have a spenddown. It's like a high deductible I have to pay before they will pay for doctor's appointments or medical supplies. Mine is almost $500 per month. My husband and I make less than $12,000 a year. Forget about food stamps for us. We were told we make too much (we don't have kids).

We're working hard in able to survive, life is not an easy for us, we didn't choose this.. we don't have an option tho, but to deal with it... You, people from a so called rich country... help your people.., because they need you. there is no harm in helping. John Reyben Ravanzo Hey! I just wanted to thank you for sharing a bit of your own perspective and experience. I am only 15 but I was very lucky to be born in the United States. It's undeniable that a very large amount of us Americans certainly have real deep and valid struggles in our lives, however it is also undeniable that we have so so many incredible gifts that were given to us that we take for granted every single day. Thank you for sharing and for giving others a reminder to look at the positives in our lives and acknowledge and count our blessings and privilege yet never ever stop helping each other and giving to those who need, to not only be grateful for what we have but to fight and work for others as well

Poverty, crappy education, dependency, ect will not be solved unless the ones who are experiencing it get their problems fixed, their voices heard, and their opinions praised. I live below the poverty line, with my father and brother. We feel blessed to have the things we do. We eat simple but we are extremely grateful and I must say the foods good. However I think the ones who can make change are the ones who experience the problem. Your lucky to have 23,000 and to have owned a home.

This is global, not just America. New Zealand with a population of just 4.5 mil has at least 250,000 children living in poverty. Our government says the number is lower, while activists say the number is actually higher. Thats ONLY children in poverty - who knows how many adults. That's a lot of people in such a small country. Two children died in uninsulated state-owned homes last year from preventable illness (that I'm aware of, but there are many more who are getting things like rheumatic fever and respiratory problems), because having a house full of mould and no carpet or curtains or heating is the standard apparently. I am aware that there are places in the world where shelter is a luxury some cannot afford, but if we consider which country this is and how we've wasted 24-26 million to change our flag and a further 80 mil to change our bank notes, its appalling. Such a waste of resources. The rest of the world thinks we're the clean green utopia, but the truth is that NZ has a seriously ugly problem with poverty.
I'm curious, how much is a one bedroom unit to rent in American cities? I've heard NZ has very expensive housing but I'm not sure how to compare this another way. A one bedroom place here (a really shitty one) is about $450 USD per month in my city. It does vary from place to place but I'm very curious to see what the difference is. I know our minimum wage is only slightly higher than the US.

+Caity Elizabeth ....we are a middle income family (well only 2 of us left now, husband and I) and live in a home with no heating (only one gas heater and they make me nervous)and I just about perish in Winter, and we live from payday to payday. I am not young now. A lot of peoplein state run homes are a lot better off than us with insulated homes etc. but we have never had a handout. However I am so greatful for food and a roof (lets hope it doesn't leak ha). Middle income earnersare finding it so tough not just the very poor. However its up to people to do their best to try to helptheir neighbour so to speak. Our place has huge mould problems. We have no carpet (wouldn't want anythough) and gaps in the windows so Winter is a big problem. God has been good to us though and helpedus a great deal last year and this year though. My son is in NZ and the rents for a total dive is ridiculous for one person and people line up for flatsthere. He was blessed to get somewhere cheap and nice by himself. Most countries have many poornow....sign of the times and as we are the final generation now anyway I don't suppose we should fret too much.

I always struggle with the question - am I rich or poor? bc compared to homeless on skid row I am rich but compared to Oprah I am so so poor. We need to define poverty not in dollars but in circumstance - if I have shelter of any kind today, food of any kind today and are covered by any type of clothing today then I am "rich" today - I'll have to worry about tomorrow when it gets here, that' s the only way I can cope with the question of rich or poor for myself.

I grew up with a father that was hit by cancer, for years we had to go around in bikes digging in trash cans to pay our bills. Believe it or not, we paid every single bill we had by the trash of others, recyclables. Ask me for a handout and watch me not flinch when i tell you, tell it to someone who cares, we took care of ourselves, four children, no one paid for our apartment, no one paid for our lights to remain on, things have gotten different. People are expecting handouts.

Life should not be seen as statistics, and problems that need to be fixed. Life should be about seen as us humans who have feelings, emotions, who react to any change, who live life based on our environment, and that we have all problems fixed. But one thing changes life forever. life is 10% information given to you 90% how you react to it.
Are you reacting to information in a way that makes all better off and happy?

the guy with the red polo has a nice house with good kitchen appliances and a nice decent car, in many countries would be considered rich. this is not the real poor people. I quite don't get it coming from a developing country., it's different to starve and live in a slum than to be unemployed or temporarily in short in cash . he seemed very educated and articulate, maybe he's looking to high ball jobs . he might have a chance as self employed or entrepeneur... i mean, it not the most dramatic situation in the world... i think beeing poor in places like El Salvador or Philipines is way much worse

Erick de Vasconcelos He does not have the house, he pays a rent (and does repair works) to live in there. Tomorrow he may not be able to afford it and may have to move to a different place. As you say, he might have a chance as a self-employed. Well, he is not managing to make it work. And there's thousands like him, in the current situation. It may not look dramatic now because he manages to make ends meet, what is dramatic is that the complete insecurity about the future and the fact that tomorrow could be much worse. Living day by day, in fear of the future, is frightening.

Most of theese people aren't really poor, they feel poor beacuse they no longer have the things that gave them their confidence and sense of value.
A sytem built on neverending growth where they come up with more and more stuff that people "need" and better ways of convincing people they need it for every year that pases and where values are primarily in the things you own rather than on being balanced and being at peace with what you have as long as you can get food and spending more time with family and friends. Which one will you choose to spend you valuable time on next...

"Why we want you to be rich" is a book published in 2011, it was put down by the business media and because of that reason I had the opportunity to buy the hard cover. It was co written by someone who's dad was the head teacher for the state of Hawaii back in the 50's and sixties. His friends dad did not have even a high school education but lived below his means and reinvested in himself and when money flowed in he used people smarter than him and paid them accordingly. The other co author borrowed 1 million dollars from his dad to invest in Manhattan back in the mid 70's when New York sucked he eventually used the banks to his advantage and become a billionaire and then lost it later to gain it back again and more.Robert Kiyosaki is the first man I am talking about, When he and his wife made 5k in real estate rentals that is when they became financially independent from there a person or persons can build up real wealth.R.E. is not the only vehicle, go to the library systems, found out about how other people grew financially and as a person.

why?WHY?WHY?WHY?WHY Dont we invest more on the "poor"m they work harder then the greedy one, they work with sincerity, willing to give the best back to the people, why dont we the POOR help each other! WE THE "POOR" Are rich inside the community, DONT LET THE COMMUNITY BE POISEND.
Myself having families working every single day, just for them to provide for their kids and give them what they need, security,prosperity,faith,confidence,moral.humanity...
HUMANS dont Forget what you are! Dont forget were we come from! HUMANS WAKE UP AND HELP EACH OTHER.
This documentary was great, and it teached me more, not to rely on the government, but your community, the ones who you live with, the ones you work with, the ones you love, the change starts there.
I wish you good luck whereever you may be, and I hope all will work hard for the comminuties, whereever you live, which ever community, because you always could be one day the one who asks......
Peace and blessings be upon you

I think that there is a basic problem is america that people do not have enought savings for "stormy weather". Also when you do get into unemployment situation you need to share this information with your kids, there is nothing to be shamed about.
This can be a learning experiance for them to look at the reality and show them that even when bad times come you can survive them.

Well said, I totally agree. My partner & I are on very good wages & have built up assets and passive income BUT we don't have the lifestyle others our age have as we are focussed on being prepared for anything & living without financial stress or worry. The time will come for us to 'indulge' a bit & enjoy the fruits of our labour & sacrifice but NOT until we are set up & secure & NOT using our capital reserves. We kind of live like we are poor but we actually are not. Ironically, we see plenty around us whom live like they are rich but actully are far from it. However, the things we choose to go without are really the little things that add up to be a big expense. We sacrifice these things (store bought coffees & food, clothing, entertainment - there are many free/inexpensive ways to source these things) but we are happy to splurge on big ticket items like property, shares, interest bearing deposit bank accounts, other investment vehicles & classic vehicles.

    • @alonph
      @alonph 10 ปีที่แล้ว

You do not need to live like you are foor, the idea is to try and avarage your life style so your income which is not stable from time to time will not affect the way you live. when I was young and my children where little I had a lot of expances I used to rent a big house so I will enjoy it altough I did not have the money to buy it. today after they have grown and my expences went down I bougth it and although today our income is around 200,000$ a year we live a rather avarage life and so do the kids, they have thier own money which they have saved but they hardly use it.

Hope is not an illusion. What is the illusion is that wealth will fall in your lap. You feel it is you against the world thats is because it is. It comes between the outside or your family your family will win every time. Cheat the system find the loop holes and you find leap like hell. Success is a war against other people those in success will fight against you the hardest is success becomes saturated then someone has a risk of falling not having skills to survive

Government has changed its agenda and its mission. In practice not every issue is considered and fixed. Now's the time for all people to unite. No political parties! No diff beliefs unless they benefit all for the greater good. What is good? What is bad? What is wealth? What is poverty? Why? Poverty must stop being the norm in human life. As well as economic class, different health care, different educations. All must receive the best health care, education, and resources.

Yeah but I was trying to say that you can go from eating the usual, to eating fast food/sammiches but end up eating more or less nothing cause even junk food costs something. Like sometimes I buy what is considered a fast food meal and I eat it for lunch, dinner and lunch the next day. You lose weight that way, even if you live off junk food.
