Be thankful for everything you have got. If you have a house mortgage that you’re paying off, food in the fridge, light, warmth, entertainment appliances, car and disposable income you are doing very very well.
No you are rich . I keep reminding my husband of this. He was blessed to find a good job that pays our mortgage and bills and food and he keeps getting into accidents because he can’t stay off the cellphone . I’m so angry with him. He lost his business because he had so many accidents from being on the phone . If we end up homeless it’s gonna be his fault for being fired. He just doesn’t get it. He will not make even a quarter of the money anywhere else that he makes at this job. I lost my job of 7 yrs due to business closing. I can’t find a job that pays even half what I made . All that’s out there are min wage jobs . Nobody wants to pay a decent living wage. We had to keep my husbands life insurance coz if he dies in an accident, I’m not gonna be able to support myself . I’ll lose the house . And we just bought this house back in 2017, no money down. We still have 20 yrs left. Hubby will be 80. We both expect if we live long enough that whoever is left will lose everything to a nursing home. That’s what happens . They take all of your assets . They go back five years. So if u trust someone to put the house in their name so it won’t be taken but most ppl can not be trusted. I have one sister that I trust . But she’s in even worse health condition than I am. And she will end up in a nursing home way before me . She has a condo . That’s gonna get taken . None of us trust her children . And I have no kids . I was in a nursing home to visit my mother in law with hubby. And there was a lovely woman of 101, she told me she has 11 children. None come to visit or wanted to take her in . That made me so sad. They put her in there. I fear the future is to just kill off anyone over 75. They see the elderly as a burden to the system and they don’t want to be paying SS to anyone who’s living to 100. You know ? They expect u to expire before 90.
I am so grateful, thankful. I have all of those things. My condo is paid off. My car is paid off. I have food, clothes, heat. Don't have much disposable income. Retired. I just don't want to be an old lady living on the street.
Jerry is a good guy. Works full time and does voluntary work, Paying for his children that he hasn’t seen in 9 years. Sober. Such a positive attitude. America is a tough tough place for low income earners.

The black woman is a legend she did it ! She put the work in and is improving life for her family and teaching her children how important higher education is, she will make it and succeed I felt her tears and pray for her family .
My brother and his wife did the same, encouraging their children to attend college, unlike my parents that wanted me to be a janitor, making minimum wage at a university where students and falculty treated us custodial workers like crap.

A lot of times we encounter people who are doing their jobs at the hotel, restaurant, hospital, etc., and we do not realize the hell they are going through.
I worked in a restaurant last year and the owner was so rude. He made me get napkins and wipe some mayo a customer dropped on the floor. I wanted to use the mop and he said to use "common sense" and use a napkin first so on my knees I went and then used a mop. I quit necause he was horrible
@@fabulouslifeinchrist1349 I worked in a nursing home and we overheard the director of nurses asking the charge nurses if there were enough shit wipers on the schedule.
Multi-million dollar hotel and they pay this guy $11.00 an hour AND expect him to stay looking good by buying his own suits and ties, shoes, etc??? The least they can do is provide him with 5 suits to wear
Yes this is so bad what they are doing to this guy. How are they forcing him to work for so little? Are they holding a gun to his head forcing him to work there? Or threatening his family?
When I was in my twenties....a long time ago, I worked for an audiovisual company that serviced a big hotel. They expected me to wear a three-piece suit as I crawled on the floor connecting cords, etc...for a hair above minimum wage. They lied that I'd be full-time.....I only had ten hours on the schedule! I worked there for half a day and walked out. The owner called me and bitched.....I told him to shove it. Still annoys me to think of this and other jobs that I started and quit immediately that would have been sheer exploitation.
@Cheri Merchant you are the one coming with the bull. There has to be a big shift in the mentality of poor folks, for them to escape poverty. Now, I think , not you, but your way of thinking is ignorant. You seem not to accept , that the statistics show , poor struggling single women, raising children on there own are most likely to live in poverty. This is one of the things that creates generational poverty, because what do you have to give to help your kids , get a step up in the world? I commend this woman, because she did not get defeated by her environment. Only, if you have the drive , will, resolve, and determination can you escape poverty of this type.

All those children, no extra money, no time and a daughter with cancer ... my goodness she has a lot on her shoulders. I truly hope life turned around for her. I honestly feel for this lady and her family. 🦋
Exactly, a daughter with cancer, an ex-wife earning a lowly salary and an ex-husband who despite their hardships is still refusing to provide for his children. Why she hasn't taken him to court I do not know, but she really shouldn't have to. I'm a divorced father of two teenagers and I give my ex-wife whatever she needs and she earns more than me, but we do both have very good careers tbf. We're both very lucky in that sense, esp with Covid and Lock down. I'd never see my kids or my ex-wife going without, ever.

I only shop at used Clothing Stores when shopping for clothing. I make $80k a year and will continue buying used. Just because you have money, doesn't mean you have to waste it. Thanks to my Frugal ways of living, not eating out, and not buying things I don't need, I've saved in the last 9 years close to $150k in my bank, and I support a family of 3 on top of that.

Man, I remember being a full-time CNA making 7.25/hr in 2006, going to nursing night school full-time as a single mother on my own because my husband left me. That crap was hard. I eventually made it through school, thank God, but I will never forget where I came from. The rich just keep getting richer on the poor's backs.
Bad thing about this is, i hadnt realised it had gotten this bad. You use to be called lazy if you were poor. Now you can work your ass of ,and still not make ends meet.
so the people working taking care of our sick and elderly should not be paid well? if every person with decent intelligence and work ethic gets more education or learns a different skill, who is left to take care of our most vulberable? Do you really think that is acceptable? Even nurses make much less in long-term care than any other work setting. Nursing homes are known for being awful. Is it any surprise when people able to get out do in order to get more money?

a The nurse is fighting the good fight. Other nurses stay in school working on RN degrees, administrative education, etc to get the income a nurse deserves. Still others leave the field because it’s crazy stressful. I became a chemist. Traditionally men’s fields pay well and you can go home after 8 or 9 hours of work
Jerry seems like a good man. He talks about his kids and what he wants for them. He pays child support. He's a hard worker. I wish I could help him out. I hope he and all of them are doing better these days.
Laura Bland I’m his daughter . He is doing ok . He is still in California and we are still in NC . We are suppose to be seeing each other next month . It has been 7 years since we saw each other .
I vaguely remember watching this doc before and the second I saw Bridget I remembered that awful thing Mom said, “She doesn’t fight like I would.” And her whispering “I’m tired.” It’s so hard to not only hear a mother imply their child has failed in some way by suffering and dying, but for that mother to be in healthcare. My god that’s so hard to hear.
That disgust me hearing that and then to tell her daughter shes gonna be left with her kids!! ffs, I bet its killing her daughter knowing shes not going to live long and will never get to see her kids grow, so sad.
ItsFlawlesss from what I got out of this it was filmed in 2002. I started out as a CNA in 2000 and was making $6.65 an hour and was probably making a couple dollars more in 2002. Now they start CNAs at $12.50 and you work your way up. Times have changed, nursing wages have gotten better.
When I was a kid, my family and I used to go to this diner near our home and there was a waitress we loved. Years later when my brother and I were in our early twenties, we happened to go to another restaurant and saw her there. She was still waitressing and she remembered us. We talked about money and how hard things were and she said to us that people always say that we don't work hard enough in this country if we have to struggle so hard, and that she says back to them that we work just as hard or harder and have less to show for it. Docs like this make this point. These people aren't lazy. They work FT, most days a week and still can't survive. They are the people she was referring to who work hard and have less to show for it. What do they have to show for working every single day of their lives? Not even the bare minimum of contentment and being able to know all of their bills are paid each month. That is criminal.

Excellent documentary. My heart goes out to these incredibly hard-working people. My life is so easy. I couldn't possibly do what they're doing. Sure wish them the best.
As someone who has had cancer twice, I was pretty upset by what she said to Bridget. It’s not about ‘fighting’- as a nurse I’ve seen patients fight incredibly hard, but sometimes it’s not within your power. When you are debilitated by cancer treatments it’s also incredibly hard to appear as though you are fighting - some days all you can do is put one foot in front of another! As a ‘motivatiinal’ speech mum- B minus- could do far better!
We pay taxes...we are owed a return on our money. Other developed nations have socialized medicine, better schools, better roads, better pensions, longer parental leave, longer vacations, better services. We want better police, reliable firefighters and emt's. I believe we all have a right to clean air and drinkable water.
It’s also true that we shouldn’t be paying rich people for us to be able to live???? No one owns earth!!!! Nobody owes us poor people???? Seriously. My mom raised us on her nurses salary in the 70's for about $9-10 an hour....we lived in a nice low income complex in Long Beach, CA for about $300 a month. I had everything I wanted and we went to Disneyland and all the theme parks 4 times a year. She even bought a house later on. But it is all the fees and other costs that makes it not possible today. Food, car, bus, gas, etc. Rents are skyrocketing while salaries remain the same.
Exactly, real wages have not stayed the same as the cost of living so it is impossible for anybody to live on the same wages. You say your mother was earning $10 an hour 40 years ago, the security guy in the video is only earning $11 an hour yet rent, food, utilities, gas, healthcare, education have all tripled if not more. The system is in error not these people my only question is when are Americans going to start doing something about it instead of blaming the poor for their situation?
@ Scott Carmichael According to the statistical data the average wage for 1976 was $4.76 per hour, the highest rates per hour were in the construction industry @ $7.49 per hour. The basic minimum wage in the US as of 2017 is $7.25 per hour....there is something very wrong with what is happening in America and it has nothing to do with how hard a person works. babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015021301612;view=1up;seq=406
+73. Well Americans do (generally speaking) have running water piped into their homes & sanitation systems - its just this egregious tax scheme we have to pay into & the wars we go to die in...plus what been called by media - "collateral damage".
True...and they won't pay up until their asses are thrown in jail. They will chase skirt until the cows come home, buy an XBox before they will pay one red cent of child support. I've seen it.
I don't know, maybe part of it's the fact that you're in a hurry. You've grown up on instant orange juice. Flip a dial - instant entertainment. Dial seven digits - instant communication. Turn a key - push a pedal - instant transportation. Flash a card - instant money. Shove in a problem - push a few buttons - instant answers. But some problems you can't get quick answers for, no matter how much you want them. We took a little boy into Central Receiving Hospital yesterday; he's four years old. He weighs eight-and-a-half pounds. His parents just hadn't bothered to feed him. Now give me a fast answer to that one; one that'll stop that from ever happening again. And if you can't settle that one, how about the 55,000 Americans who'll die on the highway this year? That's nearly six or seven times the number that'll get killed in Vietnam. Why aren't you up in arms about that? Or is dying in a car somehow moral? Show me how to wipe out prejudice. I'll settle for the prejudices you have inside yourselves. Show me how to get rid of the unlimited capacity for human beings to make themselves believe they're somehow right - and justified - in stealing from somebody, or hurting somebody, and you'll just about put this place here out of business!

tipperary links So are many of the fathers. The problem is that Congress refuses to increase the minimum wage or take any other measures to ensure that people have an adequate minimum standard of living. Instead, they give tax breaks to the wealthiest. A working man or woman should never have to go without food, shelter, clothing, medical care, or the means to live with dignity.

BenzoB The biggest question is why isn’t taught already. Honestly our education system is a failure from sex education, to health, and financial literacy. All of these who are left up to parents who barely know anything either or don’t want it being taught in schools bc it’s “personal.” Wealth is passed down and so is poverty. After 13-15 years you really realize how crappy it is. Right out of highschool straight into student loan debt. Personal responsibility is very important but I we have to hold the “people” who are in charge of allocating these resources accountable too . It’s is really easy to blame people but when you find out so many are set up to fail and struggle it’s sickening. Thank goodness I have the resources to educate myself. I’ve seen the same problem play over and over from decade to decade, people are still facing the same problems that were shown in this documentary, today! My thrift store sells videos for a dime a piece and that is where he said he shopped. If you are there for clothes, you get a chance at picking up other things. A cheap video when you live in a room the size of a jail cell will help you not go mad/crazy. I loved seeing him out of his little giving to those less fortunate as well.
This brings back some hard memories. But having reconnected with a long lost love really brought me out of bad times, financially and emotionally. It does really help to find a good partner in life.
I am jealous of their furniture, clothes, jewelry, homes. They all have a higher standard of living than I do. Well, except poor Jerry in that little room.
Pieshifter Egbert......you don't have to have fancy furniture or jewellery. I have a few bits of jewellery (necklaces) and each item cost me $3.50 to $5 and I only really wear them to a wedding. They look way nicer than really expensive jewellery. Actually I think they did cost $3.50.

I guess you have never been desperate enough. Some days the majority of her paycheck was being spent on child care. $50 is a lot for someone on such a low income with a family to support and a house to run. You can't really blame her for wanting to trust someone who has offered to help. I don't understand why the blame and the burden always has to fall on women when men do sh1tty things. These people all deserve a medal for surviving in such empoverished conditions. I particularly admire Jerry and his attitude in the face of such an unfair system. He really is a good man.
what is unfair? people get paid according to the skills and assets they bring to an employer. If they bring next to nothing they get paid next to nothing. That is just reality.
Living with economic uncertainty, when you were 'promised' a good life, is so emotionally traumatic! It can scar you to the point that when things get better, you literally fall apart inside. I still have panic attacks about NOTHING. I found good counselors, who told me PTSD is something that can happen to anyone.
Be thankful for everything you have got. If you have a house mortgage that you’re paying off, food in the fridge, light, warmth, entertainment appliances, car and disposable income you are doing very very well.
Agree. And help others whenever you can. Life is hard without money.
This is so true !
You know ? They expect u to expire before 90.
not having a car one would do even better, and the planet would benefit too
I am so grateful, thankful. I have all of those things. My condo is paid off. My car is paid off. I have food, clothes, heat. Don't have much disposable income. Retired.

It's not about you.

Seriously. A poor man can pick and peel a potato just like everyone else. The rich that we pay into don’t want us to live. Slaves!!!! Grow up and educate yourself on economics fgs!!!! These people wouldn’t be rich without slaves- they wouldn’t be alive without someone feeding them or doing doing it for them. If all the slaves poor or not stopped working then we’d all still survive we’d just have less house, less food, less clothes, less handbags and less selfish fucks who think the poor are worthless and that there is a system to help them. There isn’t!!!!

On second thought, maybe you should stay where you are. Your ideals really aren't welcome here. We like to take care of each other and ourselves rather than rely on Uncle Sam to do it for us. Sorry. I wouldn't worry tho. About $1 trillion your tax dollars go to help the poor through welfare and social security programs each year. I hear you guys believe abortion cures poverty. So just wait.
OldskolFan you got lucky. One would need many times that now to afford all that
Exactly, real wages have not stayed the same as the cost of living so it is impossible for anybody to live on the same wages.
@ Scott Carmichael
According to the statistical data the average wage for 1976 was $4.76 per hour, the highest rates per hour were in the construction industry @ $7.49 per hour. The basic minimum wage in the US as of 2017 is $7.25 per hour....there is something very wrong with what is happening in America and it has nothing to do with how hard a person works.

True...and they won't pay up until their asses are thrown in jail. They will chase skirt until the cows come home, buy an XBox before they will pay one red cent of child support. I've seen it.
moongirl shining Because they're bastards.
Show me how to get rid of the unlimited capacity for human beings to make themselves believe they're somehow right - and justified - in stealing from somebody, or hurting somebody, and you'll just about put this place here out of business!
moongirl shining and so many woman foolishly and stupidly have and continue to have kids with men before marriage or men who are worthless. Then barely raise the kids which is why the kids repeat the same thing more often than not and continue to live in the same place just reproducing continuing the cycle. tipperary links Spot on
tipperary links So are many of the fathers. The problem is that Congress refuses to increase the minimum wage or take any other measures to ensure that people have an adequate minimum standard of living. This was old enough that Flonase and Claritin were prescription medications. And they were so expensive.
The black lady's boss is a gem..They don't talk to you like this in Las Vegas.
Yes, she really was. Honest and no b*llsh*t. She had a great attitude and understood why the lady (sorry, dont remember her name) needed to go get her education. Loved her!
Granted that having a baby is a beautiful gift...a true blessing! But it also a choice (except in certain situations) so why keep having them if u already struggling??
@Cheri Merchant It's not only family that's coming from God, EVERYTHING comes from God, control your private parts and stop breeding, and stop coming up with excuses.
@Cheri Merchant Life is a competition, there'll always be winners & losers, and losers can always better their situation by breeding less, they wont even feel like losers if they don't breed & stop feeding the winners, if you get my drift.
@Kristie C this!! 👏🏻🙌🏻
What a disgusting outlook you have
I wonder the same. Why have multiple babies if you're struggling already.
I work 48 hours a month, sometimes more and am receiving widows social security. If I work more hours, I end up having to pay soc sec back for earning too much. This year, I worked over $3000. gross, means I owe $1500. I make $10.13 an hour with a degree, but am 65 and unable to work in the field of my degree. I have to work to pay ult, insurances, and groceries. I also MAKE TOO MUCH to get any help from anywhere. I'll have to work till I drop to survive.
Cheryl Badger Bless you.
Thank you miapdx Portland! It could be much worse so I am still grateful!
Their too i understand, I’ll like to find that fool that used to say oh wait for the golden yrs yeah right I’ll chock that person
I love the waitress! What a badass. "what are they gonna do, steal my identity? Please do!" lol
She's got a healthy dose of sarcasm.
Her little boy though....yikes....
I don't think it's really that funny in reality, but yeah, she has a sense of humor. Hard to keep one when you are being kicked and held down because our society and govt aren't supportive. BUT, we are if you are rich!
I know I love that too, that is hilarious
@@alicekranyk4173 yeah if that was my kid, I’d leave his ass in a ditch.
Employers are crafty and unscrupulous. They disrespect their long time adult employees by cutting their hours down so they can pay dirt wages to kids. It's dishonest and cruel.

Definitely, my contract is only 12 hours. I want to do over time im willing. They are a joke :(. Thank god for the NHS hear in the u.k
It should be criminal!
Wow..way to make your dying daughter feel like shit for being sick.."I'm the one that's gonna have to pick up the pieces when you go", " it's just not fair", "I wish shed fight harder, like I would"...as daughter mumbles "I'm tired".
I thought the same thing. What a way to reflect on your life during the last moments you have to live!
Carrie Sims I have been diagnosed with stage 4 liver and stage one kidney and my mom is the same way. Very painful. And due to being a single mother of three I have no choice but to keep working full time which only makes me sicker but that is living paycheck to paycheck. Hope you are well!
@@lmweinst I pray you recover soon. What about starting a GoFundMe account to help with expenses?
Tiara E. I agree, start a GoFundMe account.
She was saying it's not fair her daughter will die before her since she is the parent
Although we go through periods in our life when we feel like God doesn't see what we're going through, we need to keep seeking and read the promises of God in the Bible. We need to help each other and that is one of the purpose of the church is to help one another like the example in Acts, don't give up, God bless you.
The lady that works in the detention center. Going to school and is raising all these kids is such a stong woman. God bless her soul ...she overcame her traumatic life as a child and teen and she seems to be an amazzzing mother....what a beautiful glowing spirit she has ....i admire her strength and endurance sooo much now this ladies and gentlemen is a super woman!!!❤❤❤stay strong beautiful queen
The older i get the scareder I get. I'm 50 now wish I would of thought more when I was younger.
I work 40hrs per week as a Dish Washer and do side jobs, contracting, 20hrs per week, I own my own house.
Most of these people are fat lazy Karens grunting for cream when they don't deserve slop.
Tommy O Donovan how many times have you been divorced and how many kids do you have? How much do you pay in student loans? How do you juggle two full time jobs and earning your degree? Oh..no...that’s why you’ll always be a dishwasher
Jen Ruth he’s not a retarded fuck with student loans and useless other shit. Get your fucking mind right and stop bitching
@@jenruth792, I'm 55yro never married no kids, that's why I own my $320k house with zero debt.
@@tommyodonovan3883 so you don't have a sex life?
Wow, my heart aches for these folks and I feel guilty and ashamed for wanting more than I have. I’ve been so fortunate all of my life. I’ve never done without. I need to change my perspective. I’ve always had enough and sometimes more than enough.
I'm ashamed for complaining about wanting more😥. I have always had what I needed 💛. Today I will change my mindset.. 🤞
That's kind of you to see that, to even watch this reality of what the richest country in the world has turned into. 40 years of Raygunism. He declared war on unions and the poor and conservatives still, today, see Reagan as a "hero".
We are becoming a 3rd world country and this documentary is what should be in our news everyday. Only the wealthiest have a mic, centerstage in our country. The struggling masses don't have a voice, lost it with Raygun.
dont play the martyr. Be glad that you’ve got enough. Spend wisely and invest when and where you can Get on with your life, live honestly and take time out for yourself. Learn all you can and contribute when you want to. You are never responsible for others decision making. Above all, learn to enjoy your life.
These people all deserve a medal for surviving in such empoverished conditions. I particularly admire Jerry and his attitude in the face of such an unfair system. He really is a good man.
It's hardly "poverty" when someone has electricity and indoor plumbing. Most of the world doesn't have a big luxury like that.
what is unfair? people get paid according to the skills and assets they bring to an employer.
