Hi Ben. Im from South Africa. We run on dirt tracks. Much longer straights than u guys. We also use only klay survices. And yes only our midgets runs 6inch. The rest of us only use 5inch tyres. I run the big class. Open engine. No rules. Yes i ran big caster . My seat is way back over the center of the axle for traction. Ive tried plain slicks and even cut them many styles of grooves but still struggle with traction. Can u help????
It’s really tough to diagnose what or why something is happing without me there (especially halfway around the world.lol) I don’t know what kinds of pressure you run but I am normally one 2/3psi on our tracks here. Other then that if the durometer is too hard for the surface or if the track gets a loose layer ontop of it then slicks struggle.
So Im a body man as well and I cut my own Maxxis. You have the right idea using bondo file, make sure you measure your hiles for depth. I finish my tires with 80 grit stick it on my long duro sanding block then final finish with 180 stickit on the block. This will even your tire tread. Quit running the blade over the edge of the tire keep it as flat as possible and remove rubber from the contact patch of the tire. My tires are fast took me 2 sets to figure it out and i dont use power tools that create alot of heat when cutting.
Like yourself, I'm also an autobody man by trade school, but a crane operator now. We used to call those cheese graders because it looks like a cheese grader. I do like the concept of using that and will eventually try to use that once I make a tire resurfacer one day.
Ben, it’s like you are reading my mind with your videos.. I am trying to learn to cut my own tires as well and actually just acquired a SBC tire cutter.. I have seen this method and am going to try for sure. I use Burris tires.. I also have resurfaced my tires using the sand paper method versus the lap disc and like the sand paper much much.. Don’t the make flat rasp? Also, what air pressure are cutting at? Also those ridges as you call them as you go across the tire are created by how fast or slow you go.. if you track slower then the ridges are much smaller.. Very similar to a a brake lathe, the faster you go the rougher the cut, the slower you go the smoother the finish. I’m working on all this on tires now.

@@ddeadbeat I once grooved some slicks, Worked really well on the popcorn fart tracj I was racing. But it’s been a really long time. I don’t have a great opinion of treaded tires as I never could make them work for me. Doesn’t mean I couldn’t though. 😁

Ben when you cut Burris try putting them in the freezer overnight and then cut them makes it a lot easier

Very cool! Yeh it’s gonna take some serious time to get my technique down. I just cut at 6lbs for no other reason then why not.
If a series at local track opened up. That allowed zero tire prep would you kart guys run it? Obviously they would check for prep. And dq any caught.
I think there is a very real possibility of that. Some people really don’t like prep and would welcome no prep class. Imo.

Can you do it the same way with treaded tires
I’d imagine that is not a option. Treaded tires I’d be grinding. I can see one of the knobs catching the Rasp and winging it.
why should I cut my tires?
Less rotational weight and makes the tire more round. Nearly everyone does it for Burris not sure about other tires.
