Since most people have never seen the show, I'll try to give a little context to some of his choices. Mostly just to appreciate Geoff's brilliance: he's playing four different characters from the same notoriously powerful and scheming family, the Lannisters. Their symbol is the lion and they are very rich and typically known as ruthless. Also all blonde. The only main character that's a lannister he's not included here is the Queen of Westeros for obvious reasons. The song is kind of their theme song, about a family that stood up to them and refused to acknowledge them as lords (the Rains) that now... no longer exist. They had them wiped out. 'Main' Geoff is the father, the money behind the throne. Far left is his dwarf son who's actually the cleverest and ends up in league with a different queen, far right in leather is his other son, the soldier, and the queen's twin brother - who is missing his right hand, which is why Geoff is mysteriously not moving that hand. And in the red silk is the queen's son, Joffrey, who essentially shares space with Umbridge as one of the most hated fictional characters ever. So while only two of them sits upon the throne directly, they all are grappling for power behind the scenes somewhere. They all hold influence somewhere regardless of who's in power.
Finally, Jenn!! I've been waiting and waiting for this! Also never seen the television show, read the books or heard the music. Doesn't matter, because it's Geoff!! Other people can explain the story, characters and yadda yadda, I listen to them until I don't care. But I never will tire of Geoff. He is the consummate musical artist. Thanx for reacting to this one!
Jennifer, I'm with you having never seen any of the Game of Thrones series. But I can't imagine anyone throwing hate your way for it! Who could possibly hate Jennifer! Nice that your low note work is starting to pay dividends Jennifer BUT ... we might have to accept that hitting the last note of this song, wonderful singer though you are, might just be beyond you. 😁 Great reaction as always! 😊
As I said above, the first four season are among the best TV ever produced. After that it kinda... isn't. I rewatched the earlier seasons over and over back when the show was good. After season six I'd stopped rewatching any of it. It wasn't bad TV, it had just fallen so terribly far down to mediocre. After season eight I can't even find any happy feelings about the show. It is, sadly, skippable.
@@JenniferGlatzhofer Jennifer, please do a reaction video of Geoff's new solo cover song Ghosts Riders In The Sky. It just came out today, Saturday morning at 11am. It is his best one yet.
@@calebritter3659 Yeah, but not the slides Geoff does. Peter Barber (the opera singer from The Bass Gang) himself said though low notes like A1 or even D1 not uncommon among bass singers but not that many can pull the fullness and especially from high to low and back again off that naturally as Geoff.
@@calebritter3659 I’m a baritone trying to find resources to work on expanding the lower part of my range but I’m struggling to find any. @thecheeseman31415 i recommend ingressive phonation even though my lowest chest is a B1 everyday i can go down to F-1 and probably even lower pretty easily
I have never heard Geoff use this kind of speaking singing in a whole song before either. I must confess that I am also one who has not seen the Game of Thrones. I may have to binge watch this winter when it is too cold to go out. Love your reactions and can't wait for your next one

That's the beauty of subharmonics: if the principle of the subharmonic is within your tessitura, the sub is going to be powerful, as well. I have heard Geoff do E1's and D1's live and it will rattle your soul.
Depends. To me personally subharmonics on the absolute bottom notes are much much easier than in mid range. Others struggle with subs on their low end. Everyone has their sweet spot and a spot where it just does not want to work.
@@iizvullok, Geoff is able to do something I have never been able to, so, yeah, you are sort of right. He can hit subharmonics above where he can also hit chest notes of the same pitch. My chest range extends down to D#1 and can hit a G1 in chest with ease... I cannot do a subharmonic there. Whereas, I have heard Geoff use subharmonics for quick octave drops well into the middle of his bass chest range... just for the sake of doing an octave drop fast and accurately. This is what makes Geoff so special and versatile... he is able to pull off techniques others can do... just not in the same manner he uses them to increase his versatility.
@@johndeeregreen4592 In my case B0 and C1 are my only reliable notes on an average day (in subs of course). C1 is usually also by far the loudest. I'm a rabid fantasy fan for many (many) decades now - but I simply could NOT get into GoT. I tried to read the first book and literally stopped after a few pages. Grim. Oh, how grim. So I'm with you on never having watched the show, though I've seen enough clips and read enough comments to at least know what the song is about. And I do remember how outraged the fans were at the end of the show, at how badly they handled the conclusion. Which isn't entirely the show's fault - George Martin has STILL not written the "official" conclusion to the series. His last book in the series was published 10 years ago and since then fans have pretty much given up hope. Robert Jordan at least had the excuse of DYING before he completed his series, "Wheel of Time." And did leave instructions for the author who was given the task of bringing it home. Geoff took what was apparently a fragmentary song from the show (online info says that bits of it are played here and there throughout the shows, in addition to being the title of the "Red Wedding" episode) and wrote out a complete arrangement that is really satisfying. Peter Barber (bass singer) is a fan of the show so knew what he was listening to and pointed out that the section that begins at 9:56 in your video is totally NOT a part of the original song, but he said was clearly inspired by several of the composer's use of "driving force" music (I'm having trouble picking my words here). So, even more kudos to Geoff.
Jen,.......love your reactions, so helpful, inciteful, and i can tell you really enjoy Geoff and his 'abilities'......I think he was 'channeling' that last note from Oogie Boogie.....lol....>^^
This is such a great cover. I too haven't watched the GOT series. I rarely watch any tv anyways, save the financial news. Even so, I really enjoyed this video and your breakdown of Geoff's performance. And I must agree with David, your low note practice is starting to pay off. It's great fun watching your attempts to reach Geoff's depths. 😄 Looking forward to your next video, and your next low note attempt as well. 😁
I haven't watched GOT either but Geoff reckons it's worth watching for the amazing music alone. So maybe in time I will. That last D1 vibrates in my thighs!
It's so fun when you're flummoxed! LOL! You're not alone; I've never watched GoT either. Too violent for me. Still appreciate this song from it, and have learned enough to know this song is about destroying your enemy. The (oversimplified) reason there's no one to hear the rain at Castamere Hall is because the guys singing this song killed 'em all. I love how this song stays low, true to the original, with Geoff's spin on the characters and rhythm. We expect awesome vocals from Geoff and attention to detail, like the "Jaime" on the far right doesn't move his right hand -- which had to be hard for a guy who can't sing or talk without moving his hands -- because the character's hand has been cut off. It's some kind of prosthetic in the glove. (My only quibble is that he should have moved the sword to the other side, considering Jaime is left-handed.) But this one goes to new levels of sophistication in video editing. Took 12 costume changes to get all the shots, all the angles. It's been a while between solo releases from Geoff because VoicePlay has been so busy. They have some really fun minis out and more to come, plus a full length video with a familiar guest singer coming soon. It makes me want to hug Cesar as much as I did Geoff in Ain't No Sunshine. Kathy hinted that they have something fun planned for Geoff's birthday later this month.

I’ll put it this way, Geoff’s cover of The Rains of Castamere perfectly encapsulates the song, its undertones and the history behind it, as well as how it portrays Tywin and House Lannister in Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire. It’s a song a terror, it was written and commissioned to intimidate and put fear into the hearts of men - “When dealing with rebellious vassals, some lords would send an army, my father Tywin would send a singer” - Jaime Lannister. The song describes the brutal crushing of a rebellion and the annihilation of an entire family. Put simply, Geoff is perfect for this song!
Finally able to watch your reaction as I have just recorded mine. Another one who has never seen a single episode of GoT either so don't you worry about that Jen lol
I haven’t seen Game of Thrones either, but you don’t need it to enjoy this. By the way, Jacob has already let the cat out of the bag, but I won’t mention it here in case anyone else wants to guess. It should be fun. And - bad pun warning - speaking of Jeffs behind, I don’t think you’ve reacted to Way Down yet. You should, if only to figure out what I just said. If you do, be sure to let it run all the way to the patrons scroll. (A good idea with Geoff and VoicePlay. They sometimes add a little tag after it goes to black.)
@@JenniferGlatzhofer Sorry. I thought you had, but when I checked in your playlist for Geoff I didn’t see it. Then you know what I thought of when you said that. (Sometimes my mind works like that - other times it doesn’t work at all!)
I haven't watched an episode of Game of Thrones either. In fact, I don't watch TV at all...I gave it up in 2014 when I realized I was paying for 400 channels but was constantly channel surfing realizing that there was nothing on TV that interested me. But I do enjoy watching your reaction videos involving Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci though 😎.
GOT fan here. "The Rains Of Castamere" is played in a very iconic moment of the TV Series (I know it's been 10 years since the series premiered, but no spoilers from me). You dissecting a song from a beloved TV Series for simply it's musical qualities is very much welcomed, at least from myself. You don't need to know who "House Lannister" is, to review a fantastic musical composition.
Well obviously we now need a Jen TV/Movie reaction channel....starting with Game of Thrones. Also, watching her attempt to recreate the D1 sub is absolutely hilarious.
Less than a minute and a half in, and I'm literally laughing out loud at your American accent pronouncing 'Castamere'! Not that it was bad (it was quite good, actually), just unexpected (always the funniest). And that's from a guy raised in Kentucky and who has lived in Ohio and Colorado. You nailed it! 😎
Hi Jen, I have a nice live without ever watched Game of Thrones, it works pretty good, not suffering from not watching it😉The reaction is so great, and gave me some ideas to singing deep notes (I'm singing in a choir myself - never reached that deep notes). Thank You very much for Your detailed analysis, great again.
His voice always amazes and I simply love your reactions to both Geoff and Voiceplay! May I suggest that you take a look at Blackbird from Geoff if you havn't yet? I think it will make you happy!
Awesome reaction as always. Something kind of different, but have you heard Elizabeth Zharoff (the Charismatic Voice)'s cover of Poor Unfortunate Souls? Not sure how you feel about reaction to other vocal coaches/reactors, but a really amazing cover.
When Layne and Tony bought Pattycake Production Studio, they found that throne which looks a lot like a duplicate in Game of Thrones. The guys you are seeing are the Lannister men who had a claim to the throne. Kathy did the tapestry on the walls. The song is about the Lord of Castemere who lost his life to these men.
Another great reaction by Jenn. I have not watched GoT either. No real interest too. A couple bottles of rum and a couple cigars and Jenn will be singing like Geoff tomorrow morning.
"Lord Reyne built a castle, as grand as Casterly Rock. He gave his wife diamonds, larger than any my mother ever wore. And finally, one day, he rebelled against my father. Do you know where House Reyne is now?" "...Gone?" "Gone? A gentle word. Why not say slaughtered? Every man, woman and child, put to the sword. I remember seeing their bodies hanging high above the gates of Casterly Rock. My father let them rot up there all summer. It was a long summer. 'And now the rains weep o'er their halls, and not a soul to hear.' " Thanks for your analysis of this performance! Have you heard Colm McGuinness' version of Jenny of Oldstones?
The first four seasons are some of the best TV ever made. After that it slowly slides from mediocre to bad to a betrayal of all that is good and wholesome in the world. It's perfectly skippable. If you just watch through about season six, you should be alright, you might really enjoy it. But season eight exists.
Don't fret, you're not alone - I've never watched Game of Thrones either, but I can tell you Geoff is representing some the the Lannister clan. On the Iron Throne is Lord Tywin Lannister. From left to right, the other characters are Tyrion (his second son, played by Peter Dinklage in the show), Joffrey Baratheon, Tywin's grandson, who becomes king, and Jamie Lannister, Tywin's elder son. Interestingly, we all know how Geoff "hand sings" and you'll notice "Jamie" doesn't use his right hand. This is because the character lost his hand in the course of the story. Got to love Geoff's attention to detail!
his hand movements reflect the notes he is singing, low notes, palm down and lowers his hand slowly, mid push hands in front of chest, and higher notes palm up and moves upwards with the notes :)
I know from having watched several GoT clips on YT there are several houses battling for the Throne. My guess is that Geoff is dressed up to represent ALL those Houses, which is why you see several different images of him on the Throne. Oh yeah, just like you I've never watched GoT either
Not exactly. He’s dressed as different members of House Lannister. The song was written after the head of the house slaughtered a whole offshoot of his house as a warning.
I don't know game of thrones either nor any other likeness of that category!!!! So --- Don't feel bad :). But ... what Geoff does is nothing short of amazing, he's worked very hard to get to where he is; has turned out very entertaining/pleasing. Be Safe
or for a treat, listen to Tina Guos cover of Rain Of Castamere, no singing but great Cello music. She has quite a few Cello covers from GoT which are here on YT
I have not watched any of GoT either, and really, it is not featured in my future plans. You need not apologize. Those lows, Jenn! You're getting down to a rumbling earthquake, too!
I just found this video that you made..sorry; always liked and enjoyed. 👍 No hate will come from me about not watching Game Of Thrones--I have never had an opportunity to see it.
Don’t know if you are on Geoff’s Patreon, check out the video of this song in there. At the end, you will see his mouth shape on that last note. Very small and round.
I have watched the game of thrones show. The last season was not very good. I had no idea that this song was from the show. Now i know why the throne looked familiar. Hope no one gives you grief for not watching it.
Regarding GoT, I've only seen the first season and a little bit of the second myself, because I was watching it with my gf (sort of) at the time, then she broke up... Never watched any more...
Pssst! ::whispers:: Jen. Geoff Castellucci did the arrangement for HF's "Elvira". ::regular voice:: Always love hanging out here and learning stuff.

Oooh ahahah! And Way Down is up on my channel 😁
@@JenniferGlatzhofer Sorry. I thought you had, but when I checked in your playlist for Geoff I didn’t see it. Then you know what I thought of when you said that. (Sometimes my mind works like that - other times it doesn’t work at all!)
Geoff stays pretty low throughout the entire song...and I love it! Even the Geoff-tones don't go very high in this one.
I haven't watched it neither, so they can cast stones at me, also ... I'll try to shield you! ;)
Hahah thank you 😂
I haven't watched an episode of Game of Thrones either.
No shame in not seeing a show. There's so much media out there who can keep up??
Also... Heck. Another great video and analysis
Thank you!
its a shame, since its one of top tv shows ever, at least first 4 5 seasons. you can skip tons of crap today, but GOT is must see
GOT fan here.
😂😂ooh I see!!
I haven't watched GOT either, don't feel bad.
😂😂 thanks!
Hey Jennifer, check out Geoff's Blackbird. I think it's his best solo arrangement and is absolutely stunning
Good good ahah! Thank you 😁
VoicePlay just released another new one too. Gesticulations is the word you are looking for, as well as maybe whimsical and/or mischievous.
You’re going to have to invent some new adjectives to talk about Geoff. 🤣
It's okay, I haven't watched Game of Thrones either 😌
The cool thing about this song is its a theme for a whole family a theme that has a back story. It's a lore dump in its own right.
Oooh I have watched it and I love it!!! 😁
Jennifer is the absolute best. Watch all Jennifer's videos of her singing & you will fall in love with her voice & acting.
Wait you have HAVE to react to Serj’s official version, even if its a year later. I mean it’ll literally blow your mind trust me. Its insane
Another great reaction by Jenn. I have not watched GoT either. No real interest too.
A couple bottles of rum and a couple cigars and Jenn will be singing like Geoff tomorrow morning.
😂 thanks for the tips
Ooh you should react to the danish national symphony orchestra’s version of rains of castamere, it’s so good!
"Lord Reyne built a castle, as grand as Casterly Rock. He gave his wife diamonds, larger than any my mother ever wore. And finally, one day, he rebelled against my father. Do you know where House Reyne is now?"
"...Gone?"
"Gone? A gentle word. Why not say slaughtered? Every man, woman and child, put to the sword. I remember seeing their bodies hanging high above the gates of Casterly Rock. My father let them rot up there all summer. It was a long summer. 'And now the rains weep o'er their halls, and not a soul to hear.' "
Thanks for your analysis of this performance!
I was hoping Jen was going to peel her face off and reveal it was really Arya Stark doing the reaction all along!
Never watched GoT either. Although my friends call me Mother of Dragons but apparently that's a cool thing lol
his hand movements reflect the notes he is singing, low notes, palm down and lowers his hand slowly, mid push hands in front of chest, and higher notes palm up and moves upwards with the notes :)
Love your reaction and this song... and no, I didn't watch GoT either.
we love you anyway
Your are not alone. There are still a few of us that have not seen GoT.
hatred. harumph, harumph. Game of Thrones! harumph, harumph, hatred. 😉 keep doin' ya thing, Jen!
I haven't seen Game of Thrones either... so it's cool! I do like Geoff's cover though!
I haven't either Jen don't worry about it.
@@michaelpaull4003 thanks, at least I was on the right track (since I've never watched it)
I haven't watched GoT either so youre not alone on that haha. But his version of this song
Join the club, I've never even seen one episode.
I have not watched any of GoT either, and really, it is not featured in my future plans. You need not apologize.
Those lows, Jenn! You're getting down to a rumbling earthquake, too!
Madness haha!
I honestly thought game of thrones was a video game until just now so your not the only DORK
I can't handle Geoff. WAY too much.! As my ol' pappy used to say," you can run anything into the ground ".!
The “manhood” of the English longbow men was their middle finger rather then what you might be thinking of
I love you, I thought I was the only one who didn’t worship the iron throne.
I love you
I went to look up the pronunciation of Castamere, but it was in British, so it was like "Costemii"
He is low bass (natural) so it's easy for him😄😁😁
Dragon breath ♥️
He hit D1 subs
If you haven't commented on the CEM ADRİAN "SUMMERTIME" Live 2018 song, you haven't made any reaction videos yet.
did you around 8 minutes there explain to everyone how making an O sound works?^^
Stay with the books.
I have watched the game of thrones show. The last season was not very good. I had no idea that this song was from the show. Now i know why the throne looked familiar. Hope no one gives you grief for not watching it.
I’ve never seen it either.
I haven´t watched it either. Don´t worry
Don't worry about not having watched it. I did, I regret it.
Regarding GoT, I've only seen the first season and a little bit of the second myself, because I was watching it with my gf (sort of) at the time, then she broke up...
Never watched any more...
How about some Eva Cassidy??
So, am I correct in thinking that you *really* like Geoff's ahs?
You'll have to do reactions to watching GoT.
Just read it.
I haven’t watched it either Jen
Coldplay - Everglow [Single Version] - (Official Video) react please.😄❤💜
i love your videos, you just sweet =)
yeh thats fine, but did u see blackadder?
