  • Hello everyone!
    In today's lengthy video, I unbox my new Wen brand Band Saw. I go over everything from the pieces it comes with to how it performs with the first time set up. At the time of purchase this band saw was around $260 on Amazon. It is the 2 speed 3.5 amp 10inch version.
    I hope I covered all the questions you may have about this band saw, but if you have any comments please leave them down below.

    You need to bring the guard down closer to the work piece to keep the blade from twisting. I don't think it's drifting

      Thank you! You're correct. I was anxious at time of filming and forgot to lower the guard. I do now and it does indeed make a difference.

      I bought one these a couple weeks ago. I find it difficult to see the cut line and blade when the blade guard is properly adjusted. Anyone else experienced this?

    This vid was well done. Informative through the hands on approach. I have been looking at band saws like this for a couple of months now and so far this one has my eye!
    Thanks for the way you did this one and keep up the good work on the channel!

    Wen makes a roller base that works great for the bandsaw...and it is reasonably priced. I got one for mine and it is easy to move around.

    Use the blade guard brother. No need to get fingers so close to the blade.

    Thanks for the review of the saw. Looks great! I'm no expert but it seems that most woodworkers don't recommend cross cuts (against the grain) with the piece right on the fence. What you can do is add another 1inch spacer between your piece and the fence. However cutting with the grain you can use the fence.

    • @DoubleBitsWorkshop
      @DoubleBitsWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is true that extra safety measures can be taken. In my experience cross cutting with a band saw typically isn't as dangerous as say it would be with a table saw, there's much less ability for the band saw to have kick back like the table saw would. It could indeed give you a different or better cut using a spacer like you mentioned. Thank you very much for pointing that out!

    Any updates 7 months in?
    Im looking for a band saw to cut things in a home workshop, so a range of wood, plastics and Aluminum. Im guessing that this saw with a blade with more TPI would be ok?
    Keep up the good work, James

    • @DoubleBitsWorkshop
      @DoubleBitsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your comment. :-) The bandsaw is still working great! I would saw a higher tpi blade would be a good idea especially if your looking to do a more equal wood/aluminum type of workshop. And the saw i would have no doubt could perfectly handle that task. :-) my band saw still cuts great! And ive cut some aluminum t channel with it and hardwoods. After 7 months my blade is still pretty sharp. But I might change the blade just to keep the motor from working too hard if i end up doing more work with aluminum myself.

    Have u tried cutting natural wood? I started making bows and was looking into a wen.. but I would be cutting hard woods like hickory oak ECT I'd love to hear how it would work for something like this . Maybe 4-5" diameter.. I'd want to half it the long way.. nice vid man👍

    • @DoubleBitsWorkshop
      @DoubleBitsWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have cut through: Birch wet and dry, Elm, Japanese Elm, and Hickory with it! The blade is just what it comes with. And it held up just fine! It did try to stop completely when I tried to "push hard" the logs through with the hickory! But then i remembered that I just went from Birch to hickory.. And that i had to slow my cuts for hard wood. If i was to only work with or start really working with Hardwood, then i might upgrade the blade for it, But I would still be under the starting price of a grizzly brand or especially a jet brand! If I decided to go that route. :-) but the first thing i did after i made my first video with it was cut some hardwood logs! I have a hardwood tree in my yard and we have been trimming some thick dead branches! And I made a 6 inch across mini stump! That stood about 4 - 5 inches tall. :-) the Wen did fantastic!

    I got one of these saws about 10 days ago through Lowe's. Ran into a problem. I have checked all the major retailers, Lowe's, Home Depot, Menards, True Value, Ace Hardware. No retailer stocks a 72 inch blade for this saw. Of course it can be ordered but that doesn’t help if you break a blade. Can’t just go pick one up and your project is delayed for at least several days. Has anyone found a solution to this? Thanks. The window for returning this saw will be closed in a couple of weeks. I prefer to keep it but not if blades are going to be this difficult to find.

    Thanks for the review. I've been eyeing up this saw for a couple of months now going through reviews and comparing to other models. Feel pretty comfortable taking the plunge now. BTW the plastic piece that was slightly raised on the table, am i missing something or couldn't you just lift it and spin it 180 degrees putting that lip in the back?

    • @DoubleBitsWorkshop
      @DoubleBitsWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's still a great saw! I had to get a replacement blade but it was around $20 so not bad! But I wore out the main blade by using it too much! Otherwise there has been zero issue with the saw!

    • @DoubleBitsWorkshop
      @DoubleBitsWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My table didn't wobble a whole bunch, but check all of the bolts on the whole unit, sometimes when they ship not everything is tightened down correctly and can cause the unit to wobble. I hope that helps!

    Any chance you could check the noise level of the bandsaw? There are some apps for it apparently, there's a video of a guy testing 3 saws and apparently the noise level differences are huge. The video is called "Noise comparison: 3 band saws", there are probably others. Really curious if this saw is on the high end of noise or within reason.

    • @DoubleBitsWorkshop

      I don't know what the dB is for sure, but in my personal opinion this band saw is incredibly quiet. If I get a chance I will check it out for sure though!

      That’s what I thought. However I bought this bandsaw and I like it. It runs smooth and quiet hasn’t disappointed me. My only wish were it had a standard 3/4” miter slot for making jigs, I made one but it took extra time to make a runner. I’m not sorry I bought this saw and I’d buy it again.
