Great comparison my friend and great editing/B-Roll. Best of luck to you in this crazy TH-cam journey! The dial on that Seiko is ❤️ however the sizing on the Smiths watch works better for me.
Catching that smiths in stock and and ready to be shipped is like finding the ark of the covenant or the lost treasure of the templars. Actually, it might be harder. Hey great content! Very professional
Thanks for the great review! Your videos are wonderful. I hope you make some more! I am very happy with my purchase of the alpinist that I picked up on Saturday.
Thanks for the great comparison. To me it is a no brainer. Having had the Everest I would choose this all day long. The only reason I sold mine was I really liked the Lorier Falcon 2 in 36mm also. There is just something about the Falcon even though I am still a huge fan of the Everest. I did get the recently released although now sold out black dialed Smith's Navigator and I can tell you that will not be leaving my collection. Thanks again and enjoy, Brian.
Love what Lorier is doing with their watches these days. The Navigator seems like a hit! I have a huge hankering for that dial and I may just get one to review... thanks for watching!
Really kind of you. I put in the effort to try to show watches in their most honest form. Not here for TH-cam fame but more to share a passion project as cliche as that may sound. Would love to have a archimede for review. Something to work on!
Very pleased to come across this comparison as I have that same Alpinist and for some time I've been considering adding a Smith's Everest gilt but have shied away since I I've been nervous about that 36mm case on my 6.5" wrist. Seeing the Alpinist right next to the Everest confirmed my suspicions that it would be too small for my tastes. Too bad as I have seen some great pics of that gilt and sunburst black dial with the gold hands that really look terrific. No matter....trying to capture one in the 1 minute window would be like trying to catch a rainbow.
I just got the seiko and it's a great watch. I do wish they would've distinguished 12 o'clock on the lum and it had a signed crown, but other than that it's perfect. I was hesitant at first about the matte dial (I like the alpinist sunburst dial) because I didn't like the look of it in video, but in person it works fantastically; it comes off as more of a sparkle in person, which is nice. I also have to disagree with the strap being bad on this one. While I did replace it for a few reason, it's probably the best one I've seen from seiko in the lower price point. I could see someone being happy with it if they never cared to replace it. It's on a whole other level from the sarb017 lol.
Great points! And fair to say the strap is an improvement over the straps of the past. But looking at what micro brands and even entry level Swiss is doing for straps I think seiko has more room to improve especially if they are increasing prices and moving up market. But you’re right it is an improvement from the last! The sarb017 strap was like cardboard if I remember correctly haha
@@malekdabbous7629 I have fairly small wrists for a guy, and 38mm is a perfect fit for me tbh. I also have a snk809 that's 37mm, and tbh that's as small as I'd ever go... 37mm is just a tiny bit too small, but I feel like 38mm is perfect... anything above 40mm is just waaaay to large. If your wrist is on the larger size, it might not be a bad idea to go with something 40 or above, but if you have an average, or smaller wrist size, 38 works great.
As a fellow skinny wrist watch enthusiast (6.5 inch)I've journeyed through a s#it load of watches, struggling to find those worthy of my collection. Including Seiko SKX009 Pepsi (too large), SKX013 (annoyed by no hand winding), SNXS79 (annoyed by lack of WR). Currently sitting on a 2 watch collection that I adore: Rolex GMT Master II ceramic black (just about small enough - the Sub glide lock clasp was ridiculous on me) and newly acquired Tudor Royal 38 Blue. I highly recommend that you look at a Tudor Black Bay 36 - it's gorgeous, the ETA movements are regulated and highly accurate, the bracelet is stunning. I'll be getting my hands on one in the next 18 months, it's such a cool watch I can't resist. Maybe I've become a bit of a snob but wearing Seiko no longer interested me. Only interested in Tudor, Omega and Rolex.
@@perpetuality personally I prefer the black dial than that shade of blue. Why did you let it go? Why not get another one? The prices haven't risen, unlike my Rolex Datejust blue that I traded 2 years ago to fund my GMT :-( hence why the Tudor Royal was a perfect acquisition for me. Fortunately the GMT is with more so that helps justify the deal.
I loved both dials, at the time I had a thing for blue dials since my collection was saturated with black dials. I had let it go to make room for a white OP39, I couldn’t resist that dial
I was originally all about the smiths, however a bit of digging has shown up that time factors has horrible customer service and that Eddie himself has been personally rude to more than a few of his customers,so based on just that alone the seiko now wind hands down

Great video man, I was looking for an adventurous looking watch and I was unsure between the Traska and the Smiths. Went with the first one because I read lots of bad review about Smiths customer service. I should have considered this edition of the Alpinist as well, is gorgeous!
Thanks so much for watching! You can even pair a aftermarket president, oyster or jubilee with the alpnist because it has rather conventional lugs and 20mm. That alone would make me consider the Seiko to be the one to get
@@Swisha90s I got a Traska and I was blown away with the quality. You can tell it’s a well built watch from the bracelets they use. Smiths gets a lot of praise but they just copy vintage designes and use very low quality parts.
Since I bought my SPB157, I've been thinking of selling my Tisell Explorer 36 (modern Ex clomage). Yes, the Tisell wears better, keeps time better, and the bracelet is supreme, but as you said - X factor.
I’m bothered by the hands on the seiko being grayish while the hour markers are tan. The green baby alpinist does not have this problem. That being said, I just got a Smiths Everest today. Super happy with it. Might still get the green baby alpinist though.
Enjoyed the video very much, great shots but I have to disagree with almost all of the reviews in regards to the seiko leather strap. Mostly all of the reviewers I’ve seen don’t even give it a chance but it’s a high quality strap. I agree. While I personally replaced it for a few reasons (the clasp was digging into my wrist, and I just wanted to pair it with a different material), it's probably the best strap I've seen come on an affordable to mid-price seiko so far; it's in an entirely different league from the sarb017 lol.
The way ordering works on timefactors i am more likely to save up for the rolex before getting the Everest. I tried like 2 times already allways too late.
Nice review. I like both a lot, but I’ll keep my original green Alpinist and add the titanium Swiss Watch Company Bunker field watch for $399 with the the SW200 and crazy lume and spectacular AR. Probably too big for you though at 41mm, but only 10mm thin. Between the two in your excellent review though, The Smiths wins hands down. Seiko seems to be offering less for more lately. By the way, my old Alpinist does not have a see through back. It’s solid and 200m water resistance.
Those Bunker field watches are solid value! Thanks for the recommendation, I think 42mm is as large as I’ll go for a watch without a bezel- such is the curse of having small wrists.
The fact the hands are filled with white lume but the indices are faux patina and therefore they do not match, is a huge aesthetic flaw in that Seiko which is otherwise a very nice watch.
Nice comparison between the two. It's funny to think of these watches as mid-size. I'm not sure if there is any official distinction, but it seems to be on the smaller end of what men wear now. Even people that like small watches call the 34mm Marathon small. It seems like 36-38 = small, 39-41=mid-size, 42-45=large 46+ = jumbo. Anyway, I had a thought while watching this video, and it's related to neither brand directly. What if Rolex updated the Explore I to also add a gray/grey color option, as well as a white dial option. I think both would sell well, along with the traditional black.
Your suggestion for a gray faded dial Explorer is on point, visually more interesting than the gray of a Railmaster 57 but offers some variety and drama the right way to compliment the black dial. Thanks for watching buddy :)
