    • @asthecrowflies1201
      @asthecrowflies1201 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Biolo-G_KJ I'm not in it for aesthetic gains, I'm in it to get as strong as possible. When I was going for aesthetics, I was shredded to the gills at 138lb on hypertrophy work, but I was small and weak. I was doing way way too much and not eating enough. My diet was ultra clean but I just wasn't getting enough calories at the end of the day. I still try to eat well, I just eat until I can't stand to eat any more every time now and BAM. I'm 34 and I run a one man landscaping operation, so I think it was a combination of doing too much volume and too much machine and isolation stuff, not recovering from the workouts due to not eating all day in the heat from old habits, and being a little older. I began Starting Strength in January and I've up to 172lb and all of my lifts have skyrocketed. I never used barbells prior to this so I don't really have prs to compare my new lifts to, but I'm squatting 305 for a 3x5, deadlift is at 315 for 1x5, power clean is at 135 for 5x3, pull-ups are at 3x12 bodyweight, but I'm struggling a little with my bench and overhead press atm, which are 180lb for a 3x5 and 135lb for a 5x3. I'm pretty happy with my progress for a little guy at 5'9. I'm lifting as much and sometimes more than lots of younger guys I see at golds that are a good bit larger than me and that makes me feel great. I just want to see what potential my body has for strength and function, and once I run that ground ball out I'll most likely get back into aesthetics stuff, because I do care about that, but right now I wanna ride the brute strength train until I have to get off.

    • @Biolo-G_KJ
      @Biolo-G_KJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@asthecrowflies1201 I'm sorry but that doesn't sound very strong for a 5'9 guy man.....
      I'm 24 at 6ft, currently overstressed with little sleep and therefor low test and I do alot more then you mate (see my channel). Not to take anything away from you but this was a long story claiming deadlifts are great but I see 0 proof.
      I do alot of heavy pull ups which gave me big lats and way more backstrength then deadlifts can ever give you.
      I never deadlift anymore. I did it for fun a while back and pulled close to 600lbs now but it messes up my fatique. I see not much functionality in this at a certain point.

      Its all about muscle group activation. You have to hold the weight in your hand obviously but you still dont activate the biceps. You move FROM the muscles you want to workout. A trick is to think of your armpit and elbow in order to activate them as well. You tuck your arms and keep shoulders back by activating your arm pit. Sounds odd i know but try keeping it in mind. Its similar to how you use feet to press your cars gas pedal, but you still need hands to steer; you have to learn to use multiple body parts together at the same time in harmony, instead of fighting through the pain. If you feel pain youre not doing it right

    The wider your grip is the more up the back you’ll target.
    So the 2nd excercise with the really close grip like he was doing rowing the single dumbbell to his abs will be more lat biased.
    Going wider would be more mid back, like he was doing with the 3rd excercise.
    Going even wider is more upper back, like in the 1st excercise.
    But really you don’t need that many rowing variations in your training, I’d recommend including a pull-up variation if you have access to it but that’s the point of the video if you only had dumbbells

    2. One dumbell 2 arm rows (narrow)
    3. Single arm dumbell rows (both sides)
    4. Dumbell Pullovers
    5. Dumbell Romanian Deadlift
    All are great for the back except the last one.
    The last one (RDL) is primarily for the glutes and legs. Yes it's a compound exercise that involves back, core, glutes and legs but I would not include it for "back day". I'm guessing he is including it as a "lower back" exercise, BUT never workout the lower back because of the 3 reasons below:
    1. The lower back is very injury prone
    2. It's already worked out indirectly through the other exercises
    3. The lower back never gets big much.
    Just don't concentrate on working out the lower back. It's injury prone and get little to no hypertrophy benefits. However if you insist, then try the "kettle bell swing" using dumbells.
    Maybe also add "bent-over dumbell reverse flies" for the rear delts to the list. Although this one could be reserved for "shoulder day".

    I used to think the instructors who taught beginners had it easy, until I started myself. Guess who most beginners are and what they come to class with? They're usually not 30 year old men coming in with a glock 17. They're often elderly students coming in with snubnose revolvers with triggers so heavy they can't even pull them once. Or, if they have a glock, it's a compact one in .40 or .45 that was on sale.
