Years ago I somehow stumbled upon Mike and his videos. I was an aimless, early 20s/late teens kid with no idea what to do in life. His videos inspired me to take up welding. I'm almost a journeyman now, and its weird to come back and watch after being a metalworker myself and understanding everything he's doing, when originally as I watched I was completely clueless. Thanks for the inspiration Mike, and its nice to see you're the same eccentric, true to yourself fella!

@@Christian.Rivers Just gonna say, this kind of thing ALWAYS puts a book or whatever in a good light to me. I give mad respect to creators who enable other creators to create, and just seek everyone's benefit. Its the kind of honest care that tells me even if your work isn't the best, its probably worth buying just to support good behavior, and usually the work is only flawed in that human way that leads to future improvement, "Youthful creative inexperience" Alan Moore called it. Bit longwingded but seriously, good stuff.

I've cut a lot of brass plate in the past and the best device I found for straight cuts is an adjustable speed circular saw with a carbide-tipped blade set at low RPMs. For curved cuts, an adjustable speed jigsaw with coarse or woodcutting blades works best.

Hi, texture dude for games here. I work at Epic Games's scanning department Quixel, and I have been around since the very early days of it, developing a bunch of things that are now widely used in the game industry, including methods of capturing stuff like metallic damage. My father was a blacksmith and the knowledge I have from that is invaluable for that application. What usually happens nowadays is that the textures aren't as much photo-based as they are based on actual scan data of materials combined with procedural elements that automatically detect hard edges and so on based on parameters you set to create wear. I have actually blackened plates and so on in various ways in order to properly capture these types of surfaces.

I used to work with brass a lot as a cabinet maker. Pipes, sheets, knobs, and the like. We had what I recall to be a mostly\ normal bandsaw, but with a specific blade for brass, as well as an oil squirting nozzle nearby that would periodically release cutting oil into the cut. We had an air compressor as well, so we would open a little spiggot with a valve (really cheap setup) to constantly blow air on the cutting area to clear a good amount of the brass away, but all that was mainly for the sheets we had to cut sometimes. So very long cuts.
For smaller things like tubes and bits, you could just run through a normal metal bandsaw blade dry and do it very quickly with no problems. Just had to brush away the brass afterwards.
Brass is a good soft-ish metal, but it also leaves a lot of detritus behind when you cut into it (as you got to see). Working with the tools you worked with, I think it's hard to criticize you at all lol just a little squirt bottle of cutting oil might have helped you, since it helps keep bits/blades from getting gunked up with brass.

Bravo, Nova. You should make some audio books.
So as far as video game swords being generally more shiny and perfect...a lot of the time it is faster AND less graphically intensive to have a simple perfect surface on a model, because you can use just a shader instead of several high-resolution texture maps and bump maps and specular maps...etc etc. But now we've gotten to a point where the hardware is able to let designers use more graphically intensive methods without ruining gameplay.

Hey Mike, a few tips for using the ferric chloride. Make sure your parts are very clean prior to applying. Rinse with acetone and/or a detergent solution followed by a DI water rinse. For masking, I've found that blue layout fluid that's used by machinists holds up great and is easy to remove afterwards. To protect the patina, wipe it down with some renaissance wax
