- This is a tribute to one of my all-time heroes. The course footage that I've featured here is from a PDC that Bill and Geoff did at Melbourne University in 2005. This was my first time looking back on it since his passing in 2016 and it has been a gripping experience, to say the least. There is so much gold in it that I struggled to cram just some of it into this short film. I'd highly recommend anyone to watch it for Bill's stories and wit alone, which take up most of the 55 hours while the standard Permaculture curriculum becomes somewhat of a side act. The course can be purchased here: www.tagaripublications.com/
The rest of the footage comes from the 1991 TV series, Global Gardener. This was one of the first permaculture documentaries that I ever watched and it changed my life. The clip I used of Bill walking around his garden has stuck with me for years and I hope that if this is your first time seeing it, it will move you as much as it did me. The DVD can be ordered here: www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/...
The interview at the end was captured by EcoFilm at the International Permaculture Convergence in Motovun, Croatia in June 2005. You can watch the full interview on her TH-cam channel here:
• Interview with Bill Mo...
Lastly, is the stirring speech given by Geoff Lawton, which was taken from his TH-cam Channel: / @discoverpermaculture
I also highly recommend taking part in Geoff's online Permaculture Design Certificate Course, which has been invaluable to me and many others: www.discoverpermaculture.com/
I have also used 3 fantastic photos from unknown photographers, so if anybody knows who they are, please contact me so I can add their credits here.

Folks, I've been getting a few comments asking why David Holmgren and others were left out of this so thought I should address it here. My aim wasn't just to make a video about the origins of permaculture; of which David played a large role in collaborating with Bill and I can imagine, probably did most of the work 😅 in writing Permaculture One and the Designers Manual. I didn't want to just state facts from Wikipedia, but rather let Bill do most of the talking and give some insight into the man himself, his character and style of teaching. I did try to find footage of David speaking about Bill but couldn't find anything, though I believe the 2 students that Bill refers to at the end of this film are David and Geoff.
With all of that said I might go ahead now and make another video on the origins and advancement of permaculture with references to David Holmgren, Masanobu Fukuoka, Sepp Holzer, Robert Hart, Rosemary Morrow, Toby Hemenway, Emilia Hazelip, Allan Savory, Joel Salatin, Martin Crawford, Dave Jacke, Vandana Shiva and maybe even P.A. Yeomans, Sir Albert Howard plus the lost art of natural farming and food forests which predate civilization... If you'd like to see this, let me know and please subscribe to the channel! ~Shane
Update: I made this and it's now on the channel page. Enjoy folks and thanks for supporting 🙏
Yes, please! That would be lovely jubbly! 😍
I would love to see it as well :)
If Permaculture was left to Holmgren it would still be Dead in the Water
Thanks Shane,
Thanks Bill,
and thank you "one straw Fukuoka"
@brucedownunda7054 Same could be said of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Still doesn't take anything away from Woz... Extroverts and introverts make good partnerships.
l met Bill when l was only seven years old, randomly, at our families entrance to our front farm gate as he had just finished revisiting an old client next door to our small farm, he was killing time before he flew back to Tassy later that day. But l will never forget that encounter, that old man about 1986 (who l did'nt know was 'Bill until 20 years later), oozed wisdom, kindness, visionary that blew my mind as a young kid and totally opened my eyes on how one could transform something arid and flat like our farmland and what it had to offer. He showed me a couple of pre drawn mud maps sketches from his parked car window from where he was sitting that he had done for our farm that memory clear as day from the side of our dusty dirt road summers day roadside .. Our family had no money or foresight to be his client that day even with Bills warming towards me, and massive discount he had offered my Dad. Well.. so stoked to have met him after some investigating it was him l had spoken to that day, he has changed my life.. thx
Beautiful.
The poor farmer couldnt afford him, the rich didnt care to.... what a lagacy.
Wow, really nice job putting all of those clips together and weaving it with your narrative and music. And powerful to put the emotional speech by Geoff at the end. Quality work!
Hi Andrew, Thanks a lot! I love your videos. I see you're going to be in Taiwan in December. Look forward to seeing you there! Shane
❤❤❤
Society needs people like bill more than ever. Thanks for putting it online!
You're most welcome.
Modern life knocks us down. Long commutes and higher food prices frustrate everyone. Seeing a video like this is a wonderful lift, and I am grateful for it.
That is wonderful to read. Glad it made your day better.
Dude this is such a great documentary. Thank you for putting it together. I kept thinking that the Eternal Bill would be laughing watching this. What a life. That speech by Geoff made me go grab my shovel and dig an infiltration basin. The people who underestimate permaculture will be proven wrong in the end. That quote from Bill about stopping protesting and creating solutions was fucking solid gold. My soul was well fed watching this.
Thanks a lot! Very much appreciated. That quote, I think, is insanely important and glad that you pointed it out. Actions always speak louder than words. I spent many years talking about permaculture with little effect until I began inviting people to my garden. Some things need to be seen to be believed.
@@BoscosGarden well said. Glad to have found your channel and to see all of your hard work. Way to help give a template to others.
@keeparizonawild156 thank you sir!

He decided to stop protesting and turn his energy to making something positive instead
Much respect! ❤🎉
As the universe corrects everything, I came across permaculture at a time when I had lost hope for this world both politically and environmentally. I was blown away. Everyone should do a PDC. Everyone should read his book. I fell in love with Bill Mollison through his last lecture series. It was videotaped. I had to watch every video at least twice in order to understand everything that he was saying. That man was an absolute genius and the depths with which he spoke were mind-blowing. To this day tears come to my eyes when I think about his passing and my misfortune in never having met him. Perhaps I am blessed enough to know the part of him that he wanted to share with the world.
10 years ago Bill changed my life. Thank you for creating and sharing this Video of this wonderful man.
You're most welcome. Glad you enjoyed it :)
I still have his book, that my parents bought me as a kid.
I see his work s far more important today, than I did then. Absolute legend!

God created Adam to tend the garden he planted
This is about the most important thing humans can do, is gardening
❤🎉
Yes, we are guardians, custodians of our World.
Gotta get back to the garden.
The meek will inherit the earth. Thank the Lord.
Excellent.😊
While defining permaculture with drawings on a black board, someone noted: 5:45 “He said: you made a sort of wardrobe in which we can hang all human knowledge in relation to each other!”
6:25 Very funny story about a sea song he taught the Kalahari bushmen!! 👍🏼💛😁😅
I think humor and stories make learning possible. Certainly I can take information in better through stories than through a list of facts. And I believe I am not the only one.
He was a natural comedian. The first time I watched this course, years ago, it was to learn about permaculture. I decided to watch it again recently just for the entertainment. I'd recommend any aspiring teacher to give it a watch.
@@BoscosGarden Yes, and … More bees come to honey than to vinegar, as the saying goes.
I have your book sir excellent one for free depression physical work and minimalist community thank you all the way from Tanzania
Hiya folks, thanks for watching. Please do subscribe and hit the like button so more people will see this and also help us to make more films like this in the future.
Perfect divine timing coming across this. Got my pdc and on a mission to share what I know and inspire others to create abundance for themselves and to inspire others. ❤🌱🌲
Good on ya. All I can say is expect pushback. Actions speak louder than words.
I believe I would have liked him alot. So sorry to hear about his passing. We are the new generation. I want to help continue his work. Create a better future and world 😊
Bill and Geoff, The Silent Heroes.
Great men.
No it is David Holgrem, Bill and Geoff.
I met Bill Mollison when I was 26 years old. It's me in yellow and green t-shirt.
Amazing!!
I should have met him when I was 21. My grandfather attended a talk of his in 1979. Sadly I missed it.
Amazing documentary! What a great sense of humor he had XD Very nicely done, it, re-inspired me. Added to my public "Gardening & Permaculture" playlist and looking forward to any future videos you do, origins and advancement of permaculture would be awesome! Thank you for sharing 🙏
Thanks! I just made that video as it happens! You should be able to find it on my channel page. :)
I found it, thank you! For anyone interested, Bill's Permaculture Design Course seems to be 80% off today, April 18th, 2024. No formal permaculture design certificate, but at $17 you get lifetime access to over 54 hours of video, downloadable resources and a certificate of completion which is an excellent investment!
Great movie with great detail and length!
Thanks!
My condolences to you keep it up mate
That was very special.
Thanks Odhran. I swear I almost cried when I found the Robert Frost poem for the ending. 🥲
Great documentary
How motivating to have a life worth living and worth sharing ❤
Thank you.
Great job!!
Well done. Thank you.
Thanks Rick!
Wonderful video, thanks so much for putting all this together. Very powerful! Had to grab my shovel and put in some trees in memory of the great man!ﹰ
❤️🌳
A great tribute dude 🎉
Thank you!
I totally understand that this was about Bill, but it seemed odd that not even a mention was made of David, with whom he closely collaborated in order to formulate the idea of Permaculture into the first published works. I thank both of these men for their contributions, even though they ultimately chose very different paths to promote Permaculture.
My aim wasn't really to make it about permaculture and just state facts from wikipedia. Rather to give some insight into the man himself. His character and style of teaching. I get your point, though. I did try to find footage of David speaking about Bill but couldn't find anything.
@@BoscosGardenThanks for trying! This compilation was really bloody good. Made my day. Cheers!
A very powerful video, thank you for sharing. I really don’t know much about permaculture although been gardening for lots of years. Where’s the best place to find out more.
Heya, there's tonnes of information across the Internet to start with but unfortunately, there's a lot of nonsense too.. If you're serious, you could do the 72 hour permaculture design course that's based off of Bill's Permaculture Design Manual. There are a few that take place in Ireland but if you're like me and would rather do it from home, I highly recommend Geoff Lawton's interactive online PDC, which I think is starting up again soon.
@@BoscosGarden it’s difficult to know what are the nonsense videos so the Geoff Lawton on line sounds good as like you, it would be easier to do from home. Do you think it is relevant in the soggy west of Ireland ? Thanks for advise.
@irishcottagerenovation9900 The principles and techniques in the course are relevant to all climates. He covers 3 broad climates; tropics, arid and cold temperature, which is most like Ireland. If you're already an experienced gardener in the Irish climate, that is a great leg up. There are also 2 fantastic books that are full of information on temperate food forests that I can't recommend enough... They are 'Creating a Forest Garden' by Martin Crawford (UK) and 'Edible Forest Gardens' volumes 1 and 2 by David Jacke (US)
Everyone needs time in a food forest with all it's sensory feedback.
Either Geoff or Bill said, "All the world's problems can be solved in a garden."
❤❤

2:37 i love how he's observed even the patterns in the system and knew his ideas would have to exist outside the corruption otherwise it would die.
Observing patterns in nature and history turned me into an #Anarchocapitalist. Though I prefer the term #Voluntaryist better.
💞🙏🏼
❤️🔥
And David Holmgren?
Also brilliant. I'd love to do a film on him too.
The father? What about Masanobu Fukuoka?
Also, a great man, but Bill Mollison coined the word permaculture. Fukuoka practiced and philosophised about natural farming, but that is older than civilitation itself. Bill brought together a broad range of sciences and arts; of which natural farming is included, and created a movement he called Permaculture.
Repost this beginning at 14:00 to the end please.
I am trying
I hope that is enough
Bill Mollisons goal was to write a book that he could sell. I would like to see him do Permaculture in the awful soil in my garden. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Yes, that is indeed the goal of most scholars and great thinkers; To compile knowledge, pass it on and sustain a living from it..
If you have poor soil, try to acquire carbon rich materials, like straw, woodchip, leaves or any garden trimmings or animal dung and cover it as a mulch. Stop digging. Plant legumes, daikon radish and lots of squash in the first year. After about 3 years you should see a massive improvement.
Gvments shut down small organic farms while the industrial farms continue poluting
Hi Bill is it TRUE that you stated that the human was finished and useless at the age of FORTY?
I am not Bill, but I can't imagine this is true, since he did some of his best work after 40. 50 even..
The Father of Permaculture IS GOD!
Do you smoke weed before making videos😅😅😅
🤣 no, I've just been watching too many Werner Herzog documentaries...
Nope, the father of what so called permaculture was the NATURE itself, you can't argue on this one
West are always claims to be the founder of everything, which is not true, someone claim had found the America while already theres bunch of indigenous people living there for the century
Permaculture is the conscient Human design of efficient human systems.
@@thomasdbd1851it is hard to take you seriously when you’re a bad speller. The word is conscious.
@@estebancorral5151 a bit of tolerance for non-english speakers.
What matter is the message, not the spelling of a word.
@@thomasdbd1851 you are overly presumptuous by stereotypying people as as non-English speakers.
The FATHER of permaculture? I know you're not the first to use this tired phrase, but did you consider how idiotic it is to claim that a system of cultivation of literally Mother nature's abundance would have a father? Get over the colonial, patriarchal, anglocentricism already. Just saying. To illustrate how.silly it is would you call.Vandana Shiva the Father of seed savng? We're in the 21st century now. People are ok with collectivism, as nature is, they don't need a paternalistic single male authority figure to follow. Do you?
The man coined the word 'Permaculture', beginning a movement that exists to this day. I don't really see why anybody would be so upset by that notion... Permaculture is influenced and inspired by natural ecosystems, but it is very much a human based system in that it employs the use of domesticated plants such as modern bananas, apples, pears... literally EVERY popular fruit and vegetable, that do not exist in nature but are the result of thousands of years of human intervention...
I wouldn't call Vandana Shiva the father of seed saving... mainly because she's a woman? I don't even know how to respond to the rest of your comment...
Yes, as a young man, I have been inspired and have looked up to this wise, caring, and insightful man who came before me. Again, I fail to see why this concerns you. Assuming what other people need and don't need is a dangerous road to go down, my friend. ✌️
PS. I also disagree with him on some things too, but that doesn't mean I'm going to throw the baby out with the bath water.
@@BoscosGardenThe angry buzzword salad kinda gives them away. It seems that most people appreciate your tribute to Bill, far more than one person is angry about a term you used.
You must be hoot to live around.
@@LloydieP oh yes, so sorry, I'll go back to my weaving.
Absolutely fantastic. fantastic job with this video. So beautiful brings back the feelings I first had in the early days of my PDC. Thank you
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :)
