The director herself said that she chose the 2003 setting for the movie because that's when she was young (~30 years old). From a Forbes fluff piece about the director: "It's a time Clarkson felt she knew well and embraces with period props and a soundtrack that includes tracks from the time, including Britney Spears' Toxic - very apt for a spider-bite movie." - In other words: no narrative purpose... no reason bigger than herself... it's basically a self-insert but of a time period instead of a character. But hey... that song choice... that's some clever stuff. Toxic, ya know? Like spiders... that are also toxic! (Except for the jungle spider people who are nice and friendly, I guess). And if the studio execs full into a drunken stupor and approve a sequel to this movie, they'll be singing "Oops, I did it again!" 😆
Yes. And not just that, but she's too stupid to even know 2003 isn't when Toxic was released on the radio. A simple Google search will tell you it was early January 2004. And because it's not winter time in New York in this movie, it has to be set at least in March or April 2004, at the earliest. Not that Blockbuster video was still popular back then, or the PSP was released yet (2005.)
Calling "Madame Web" a film just feels wrong honestly. Even calling it "Content Creation" as most MCU projects have been (properly) referred to lately feels wrong as well. "Madame Web" is just a... thing. In 10 years from now, who will remember it even exists? The main problem with the projects that are part of the Sony Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man is that except for Venom none of them were ever written or created to carry their own story they (Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven The Hunter, El Muerto, etc), were designed as villains and supporting characters for Spider-Man and it's really hard to take a character who was never supposed to the main character and make them the main character. I think that's why the Venom movies are the least terrible of movies in that universe because Venom actually was the main character of his own series in Venom: Lethal Protector. That's also why I don't think an Agent Venom movie is a bad idea since Agent was the main character in a series it could work as an adaptation of the comics he was the main character of, so you don't have to make a character that was never a main character the main character. Finally, I seriously think that ChatGPT can easily come up with much better ideas for Spider-Man movies that don't feature Spider-Man in a second than the people behind the Sony Spider-Man Universe can come up with in the past decade (I say decade for these films started with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wanting to set up a Sinister Six movie).
I've been having fun mocking this movie, but they do explain Ezekiel's visions. Because he stole the spider and offed Cassie's mother, Ezekiel was "cursed" with nightmares due to it. The visions were never real; just meant to set him up into a self-fulfilling prophecy that he could've prevented in any number of ways (recruit the girls to work for him, adopt them, move to another city, etc.) And they do explain Cassie's mother, with the adoption agency/government services lying about her mother, making it seem like she abandoned her to go to the jungle. Lastly, the movie started out as Amy Pascal's girlboss dream pitch for Sony in 2014 that was supposed to be a spinoff of The Amazing Spider-Man. It was caught in development hell, then a DC Birds of Prey script (Oracle, Huntress, and Black Canary, not the 2020 movie) was bought by Sony and reworked into Marvel characters (Madame Web being the closest Marvel has to Oracle.) Then the script was changed after Dakota Johnson signed on, when they lied to her about it being in the proper MCU canon (as in, a Disney/Marvel Studios' movie) and the director decided she wanted to make it into a thriller movie, instead oaf a proper superhero movie. And that's hot you get Madame Web, a series of bad choices and events nobody had the foresight to say "no" to and cancel.
I still think it's hilarious that they spent millions of dollars making those spider suits for the actresses and they were in the movie for barely over a minute.
I seen this Opening night on Valentine's day with my gf. The theater was empty. No joke it was only us. I fell asleep during it and it was still too long of a move. (Missed the part when she goes back to Amazon)
I didn't see this. But the only good I could sort of imagine from it is maybe the villain is why JJ Jona hates Spider-Man? Like maybe he confuses the two. But since the time lime doesn't add up at all, that doesn't even really work 🙄
When she was introduced in the animated series, at least the season she originates from was full of otherwise great episodes so it didn't bother me nearly as much. There is nothing about this movie that's even remotely redeemable which makes me wonder why they even bothered. Also the bad guy of the movie (Ezekiel Sims) is a lot more complex and nuanced character in the comics who was introduced in the early 2000s. His death was much more dignified and actually badass, even if I'm not a fan of mystical shit attached to him as a character. Trust Sony to take a character with potential and screw it up.
