      I’ve got a 2014 1.8 tsi Octavia too. Had the thermostat leaking too, then when I topped up coolant I saw oil sludge in it. Had to replace the oil cooler+thermostat with water pump. Then I discovered heater doesn’t work, so the oil in the coolant blocked the valve, which also was replaced, then shortly after the turbo wastegate is done at the same time the oil sensor stopped working. Oh almost forgot to mention the amount of carbon build up I saw when I pulled the intake manifold. That was when I needed to get to the thermostat assembly. I’ve cleaned it as much as I can, but hard carbon couldn’t be removed by chemicals, so it stays there.
      Verdict if you have a TSI, get rid of it after 100K kms or be prepared to invest in it(I guess it’s the same with any other engine).

    I say again and again, maintenance is key. I have a 2006 GTI with the FSI that has lost merely 3 psi of compression in 165K miles, no major issues. I take exceptional care of it. I check all the fluids every week or two, and I perform all the services to a T. I use quality oil only. I love it, I take care of it, and it has lasted.
    If you want a car that you could throw Walmart oil in it and have it keep running and chugging and that you can neglect, buy a Toyota. If you know nothing about cars, and just want something to get you from A to B, buy a Toyota. If your car is an appliance to you, and not something you would say you love, don't buy a VW.

      I've owned my 09 CC since 2012. Certified Pre-Owned, lease return with 30k miles on it at 3 years old and it has been a piece of shit ever since. Fit and finish are terrible. The a/c vents on the dash have disintegrated because of very low UV resistance. The headliner is falling off. I had to do a complete top-end rebuild because of a defective cam chain tensioner design. The EPC keeps faulting and stranding me on the side of the road. No way to determine if it's the pedal or the throttle body. Three VW dealerships have not been able to get the alignment right and I can't get 30,000 miles out of a set of tires. I've tried the cheapest tires and the top of the line tires and none last. I'm meticulous with my maintenance and I do my own. I use OEM VW replacement parts, Mann filters and Liqui-Moly 5W40 Liechtlauf oil, so the tensioner failure was not a result fo lack of maintenance. I'd be willing to bet money that there isn't a 2.0TSI out there built from 2009-2012 that hasn't shit the bed, due to balance shaft, or cam tensioner failures, HPFP failures and water pump failures. All of those components are into revisions with some on their fourth or fifth. VW is making a killing off of the repairs for these vehicles. You're right though. A VW is a relationship between your wallet and the repair shops. That's why I do my own repairs.

      The 1.2L TSI Polo's can still suffer from DSG problems 'and' timing chain and tensioner issues. It's just that the 1.4 TSI engine gets most of the complaints and drowns out feedback on the smaller engine. Listen for timing chain rattle when the Polo first starts. "Reliable system" hahaha, there are 15 chains in the engine....

    • @Pingu1302
      @Pingu1302 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That doesn't mean that chains are bad. People always say that it's because of the oil change. But none of that is true. In the early days, so-called toothed chains were used. These are characterised by the fact that they are quieter than roller chains. However, they cannot transmit torque and wear out more quickly under heavy use. If the start-stop system stops the engine at every traffic light, this fragile system is overloaded. This is because the torque is greatest at the moment when the engine is started. In addition, the chain tensioner is insufficient. It depends on the oil pressure. When the engine is at a standstill, there is no pressure. The chain is therefore subjected to even more stress. The result is then that you can easily observe today. VW now offers a conversion kit for a roller chain. Why not do it like this?

While they have their flaws and there are a few basket case TSIs, they are good engines when properly maintained. You can also get some substantial power increases from just the software.

    I’m a big fan of VW/Audi. My only concern is the potential (probably inevitable) combined effect of GDI + PCV = carbon buildup on the intake valves due no fuel in the intake manifold to clean the intake valves. Need to move to duel injector per cylinder tech (one GDI + one pre-intake valve) like some mfgs are starting to move to. God bless!

      @aaronhumphrey2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This must be one of the most unreliable VW engines ever built (one tiny timing chain tensioner part can cripple the entire engine). They also forgot to mention the results of direct injection, i.e. eventual carbon fouling of the intake ducts and valves, leading to a drop in power and the need for expensive cleaning, now done in-situ using wallnut blasting.

    • @em4703
      @em4703 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Direct injection doesn't create fouling. EGR and crankcase ventilation tube going into the intake does.

    • @Visionery1
      @Visionery1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@em4703 yes, and no, 'conventional' injection injects fuel behind the intake valves, this constant stream of fuel past the valves cleans off deposits This doesn't happen with direct injection, as a result oil deposits collect in the intake port and on the intake valves, fouling both.

    • @flyingsquirrel9996
      @flyingsquirrel9996 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I’ve seen, a more free-flowing exhaust system is the easiest way to make more power without voiding the warranty. AWE makes a nice one that greatly reduces back pressure as well as weight. A proper cold air intake (APR, CTS, etc.) would help as well but I’m not 100% sure if they void the warranty or not. A drop in air filter would give improved airflow and would not void the warranty. Unfortunately, you’re not going to get much more than an additional 5-15 HP from these. They will mainly improve response and sound. Having the power come on quicker and louder will make the car feel faster and more fun. While ECU tunes greatly improve power, they void the warranty. Also, if yours is a gti, it’s actually a pretty solid car to upgrade.

      Yes it is. Just Google golf gti mk6/7 engine problems. It really is so poorly designed.

    My 1.8 tsi has a steel block, not like Caddy with aluminum, and the gasket bolts go on the Caddy, engine overheats, anti freeze in oil. I will keep the vw.

    Reliable, dependable, quick.
    Dues: Read the owners Manuel, Change The air intake filter every 4 months. Get a oil change every 4k miles or less.
    Get A new battery 18-24 months. epc light may engage if you don't.
    1 top of the oil essential because the turbo needs oil and its physically located on top of this engine so its in needs of a full supply as not to lack in the engine. Hence epc may come on.
    2 fresh air intake filter EPC again may come if you don't change it. remove the filter/clean by tossing it on the ground dust will loosen put it back in and the engine will breath better. epc fix!
    third new batterie. all those things keep me Wagoning along volks.
