    I bought a standard range RWD Mach-e in early May and have found it interesting that the vehicle actually adjusts the displayed range as it “learns” how you drive. Initially, it was only stating a range of around 190 miles on a 90% charge, now after just over 2 months and around 1800 miles of driving it’s stating around 210-220 miles on a 90% charge. I haven’t taken it on any long road trips yet, but have been very pleased with the vehicle so far, both in terms of performance and range. I believe Car and Driver recently awarded it the best EV as well. I highly recommend the Mach-e for anyone looking for a crossover sized vehicle at a lower cost than the Tesla Model Y (especially since Tesla only offered the Standard range Model Y for a short period of time before discontinuing that version). Great real world test Tom, keep making these fantastic videos!

    I'm so glad you guys do this at a realistic 70 MPH (although on the NJTP that's a bit slow when everyone is doing close to 75-80). I enjoy Bjorn's tests, but he does them at 55 on average. No one drives at 55 mph. Tom M does it one of the best!! His disclosures about using ac or heat and real world range are awesome. • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

      It should be fine, but direct sunlight isn't great for EVSE. It wouldn't hurt it you built a small doghouse for it if you plan to charge while the sun is shining directly on it. If you charge at night it won't be an issue.

    This just really highlights that the EPA range rating system needs to be overhauled. Consumers could easily make the decision to buy one car over the other just for range due to an EPA rating when the other car could very well go much further with a lower rating.

    • @USGrant21st
      @USGrant21st 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EPA cannot give a reasonable range number because of how EVs operate. The battery is puny, so even a slightest change in efficiency due to the number of passengers, cargo, wind, tire pressure, road condition, elevation, temperature, speed, etc. will change that number dramatically. While driving ME I've got anywhere from 1.7 to 5.6 mi/kWh, that is more than 3x spread.

    Thanks Tom! It looks like Ford’s EV mileage/performance approach is different than that of Tesla, I respect that.
    Also noticed the wheel arches are in gloss black (red car); on the blue Mustang that you reviewed the wheel arches were painted with the car color (much better). P.S. there is no way I can live with that big glass top without a cover here in Florida. I suspect aftermarket kits will sell well here.

    • @metal_horses568
      @metal_horses568 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That blue limited "First Edition" model had body colored wheel arches, the red is a Premium trim. As for the glass roof, you should actually drive one and try it out in FL. I have a 2011 Glass Roof Mustang and you can definitely feel sun heat through that to where you would benefit from the included shade. In the 2021, they did way better on the glass to where I don't feel the sun. Others online say the same thing. Saying that, there is an aftermarket company making a shade but I don't think it's needed.

    • @AMan-he9sz
      @AMan-he9sz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own a Mach-E with the glass roof and, as reported by various reviewers in sunny states, heat transmission into the cabin is a non-issue. Ford, unlike Tesla, has added the CORRECT amount of tint, infrared, and UV protection to the glass. I actually forget that the glass roof is there while driving the car. I live in TX where the temperature has consistently been in the 90s for months now.

    Ford could be considering weather, since they'll be targeting their home state of Michigan and the rust belt. I see Mach-E's everywhere here. Alternatively, maybe Ford is considering battery degradation when they de-rate their batteries... something all companies should be required to do. Tesla typically over promises and under delivers, even on day one. Then after the first 10k-50k miles, people have reported degradation range losses amounting to as much as 7%! Then for the rest of the vehicles life, which could be 150,000+ miles, it'll have less than its rated range. Not exactly giving people what they were promised. Ford also has a much larger buffer in their batteries, which could be accessed for the battery's early life degradation... so maybe the car's range won't see an initial degradation related drop until after 50k-100k+ miles; in which case the underreported range figure starts to play.
    People are so congratulatory of Tesla... but if they're only capable of beating the competition by using these gimmicks... then are they actually all that far ahead? What Tesla accels at isn't the powertrain, it's the aerodynamics and weight.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said, this is exactly the tricks Tesla uses to game their EPA numbers they plaster and advertise on their window stickers.

    Ford comes out with their first long range BEV, and offers 7 different trims of it. Tesla's been building long range BEVs for 9 years, they come out with Model Y a year before the Mach-E, and they only offer 2 trims; having killed off their lower range trim, leaving only $53k+ trims. No doubt to spike their profits, rather than building what customers want. Meanwhile, the AWD dual motor extended range Mach-E exceeded the range of the model Y long range trim which is also AWD dual motor with extended range battery. Tom hasn't even tested the longest range Mach-E yet, the RWD extended range California Route 1 with 305 mile rated range. The question is will even the CR1 exceed its combined range on the highway.
    Huh... wasn't Tesla supposed to have a huge insurmountable technology lead? Yes, the Tesla is still more efficient, which is no doubt a reflection of Tesla concentrating on the use of aluminum to lower vehicle weight, and best in class aerodynamics. Sure, they probably get some benefits from powertrain technology, but I imagine it's fairly small compared to weight and aero.
    I'm not a huge advocate for BEVs because of the MASSIVE amount of resources they use, and would prefer people buy PHEVS... but if you're going to buy a Mach-E, I'd argue more people should consider the RWD version. It's still quick, but it's much cheaper, and it gets more range. If you live in a cold climate and are worried about traction, buy a set of winter tires. Winter tires are amazing. They add very little to the TCO of the vehicle because you're dividing miles between two sets of tires, and they make even RWD vehicles extremely sure footed on snow and ice. Although, with the Mach-E's narrow all season tires, they may be sufficient for winter time.

    Love what your doing. Love the channel but... If you are an automotive based channel then you should likewise be DRIVERS and be a good example to the driving public. A knowledgeable, courteous driver does not sit in the left lane at 70MPH blocking traffic.

    What was the average speed for the trip? Based on the instrument display in the video it was less than 55MPH. That is no where close to a 70MPH test.

      What instrument display are you talking about? If you're talking about the time (4hrs) that's because we'll stop a few times for 10-15 minutes or so at a highway rest stop to adjust the camera or use the restroom.

      I can tell you why someone would buy the Mach-e over the Model Y.
      Build quality in the Mustang is 10 years ahead of Tesla. I personally would give up some of the Model Y's efficiencies for the Mustang's built quality. As time moves forward, Teslas Super Charging advantage will become less relevant as more and more non Tesla public chargers are erected.
      People wondered why others were buying a BMW i3 over a Model 3 and Chevy Bolt because both vehicles has more range over the i3. i3 has far better build quality, doesn't burst into a ball of fire when you charge it to 100%.

    70mph test is pointless, at least here in California. A typical traffic speed is 80mph on I-5 and 75mph on other freeways. The other problem is that you can only reasonably charge to 80% on fast chargers. With those corrections the range can be as low as 1/2 of EPA.
