    Mr. Brooks shows how to actually get away with being a serial killer. I remember reading an article about a detective talking about the movie and how it’d be very problematic for detectives if they had to deal with a serial killer who operated like Mr Brooks.

    From IMDb: The first end of the movie, when the daughter stabs Mr. Brooks, was initially the ending to the film. It would have begun another spinoff movie featuring the daughter, Ms. Brooks. After test screenings, the ending was changed to make the death a dream.

    Originally this was supposed to be the start of a film franchise, but all plans were scrapped after the film made $54 million dollars against a $20 million dollar budget, and it recieved mixed reviews by Critics.

    • @charlesballard5251
      @charlesballard5251 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The problem is that the critics didn't like the subject matter. The main character/hero of the story is a serial killer who gets away scott-free. Too many people listen to critics and refuse to think for themselves. I would like to see a 20th anniversary sequel in 2027 which has twists and turns and maybe has Smith's body being found and at the very end we find out that Brooks and his daughter have been working together in both the day and evening businesses.

    The daughter stabs her father with the scissors, and then he stumbles around the room gushing blood. This goes on for so long that before it was over, I remembered reading that Costner mentioned wanting to do sequels, and so I realized that the scene was a dream sequence. Dang it.
    I agree that the Costner-Hurt scenes were the best parts, especially the scene in the kitchen that you mentioned. I'm also very big on that last phone call between Costner and Demi Moore. It's funny, they were two of the biggest movie stars of the 90s, but they never worked together until this movie...and even then, they technically didn't share any screen-time. For all we know, the cop could have been played by a completely different actress, and then the part was re-cast after Costner finished all of his scenes!

I saw this in the theater and was blown away with the wit, charm, and cleverness of this movie. The alter ego showing the dichotomy of Mr. Brooks' personality; so good. Such a good story and acting across the board. Also, always fun to see Mr. and Ms. Movies react to something that is new to both of you. Loved this reaction. Don't have a favorite Mr. Brooks; just the fact that he has been successful at keeping every aspect of his life under control and compartmentalized is fascinating.

      He never changed his mind, he always planned to set up Mr Smith as the patsy to take the fall for the fingerprint killer.
      He talked about it with his alter ego, and mentioned getting away clean and everyone watching assumes he means by dying, but he always planned to live and get away with it. As he also ensured his daughter did too, by setting up the idea of a serial killer on campus.
      He also attempted to get the detective off his back by setting her up with a seemingly accidental meeting with Meeks, but she proved her worth by ending him and his girlfriend. The thing that gets me is why he then called the detective at the end, basically telling her that Smith wasn't the fingerprint killer! If he hadn't done that, he was away scott free.

    I love this film! I was so happy to see you react to it. It is definitely an underrated gem. I was never a big Kevin Costner fan. I think due to my age I was a bit young when he was really popping off as the guy. The first movie that changed my mind on him was Tin Cup. Funny, because I wasn’t into golf or Costner but thought he and it were great! That and Mr. Brooks are 2 of his films that I’m always raving about. I plan to catch up on more but I want to use this lil time to suggest reviewing Tim Cup as I think you’d both love it and nobody seems to have done it yet. Anyway, great film, great review as always. Thanks for reacting to this, I wish more people would see it. This is honestly my favourite movie and its such a shame it never got the trilogy or whatever it was that Costner wanted. The Marshall scenes were amazing. There was definitely an audience for it, as Dexter showed, but it just didnt catch enough of an audience and i guess the bad guy winning was seen as poor taste for critics.
    The film also has like 5 or 6 plots running. Costners struggles with killing and (not) wanting to kill, The perv finding out and wanting in on it, The cop trying to find clues to The Thumbprint Killer, Meeks trying to get revenge, and his daughter being pregnant while also inheriting his "defect" while being stupid about it. Yet its all a coherent story being told that wraps up nicely while also leaving it open for more.

    Love this movie. By the way the reason she thinks of cannibals first when it comes to hunger is simple. If only eatting vegetables makes you a vegetarian, and you are what you eat, then clearly cannibals are the only TRUE humanitarians. Your wife is clearly a humanitarian
