      What I was wondering is why some Mercruise 302 had finned aluminum Valve covers and others had the stamped stocker . My 225 was in a Fiber form it had the finned covers, My buddy had a Bay liner with the same engine it has the stamped stock covers. my valve covers looked like a Cobra cover but with out the lettering, they were painted black like the block.

    Depending on the year, that boat motor should have been rated at anywhere from 188-225 hp. The original truck engine was rated at 140, so an upgrade for sure. Boat motors had more aggressive cams and better heads, since they were expected to spend more time at high revs, and emissions restrictions were more lenient on marine engines.

    • @garageofscrap
      @garageofscrap 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      I think it said 188hp somewhere, but that’s still a decent improvement

    • @marzsit9833
      @marzsit9833 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@QuantumLeap83 not true. boat engines are not built for high horsepower, they are built for high torque because a boat engine is like a generator engine, always under a steady constant load. cars accelerate rapidly then coast along using little power to maintain speed, their engines are never under a heavy continuous load unless you are constantly going uphill all of the time. and the horsepower ratings you claim are also not true as boat engines are not rated the same way as car or truck engines.

    • @QuantumLeap83
      @QuantumLeap83 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@marzsit9833 the specs for those engines are available online, and there's merely 1.4% variation between metric and mechanical hp. A difference of 2 or 3 hp lol. Also the engine now has a 4v carb that's not even the same 4v as the 225, different, intake and headers, so power numbers are unknown (but definitely higher) unless it's dyno tuned. Regardless, I'm sticking to my point - it's an upgrade over stock and capable of a lot more power than the stock engine would be.
      The main thing you have to look out for when swapping these into an auto is that in most applications if its from a single drive boat (like this one) it will have correct rotation. If it was from a twin drive there's a 50% chance it will have reverse rotation 😉 so just know which one you're getting.

    A few years ago, I bought a 1968 mustang for $500.00 that had spent the last 20 years out in a cow pasture in Alabama. The man told me that it was running when it was parked. Had a 302 in it with a C4 automatic transmission. Got it home, put a battery in it so that I could spin it over. It spun over, I sanded the points just enough to clean them up, regapped them, cleaned the plugs, and bolted a holley 2V on it. I filled the bowl up on the holley with some gas and jumped the solenoid. About 5 or 6 turns, she busted off! A little smoke and a little lifter clatter she was running!! She had good oil pressure and very little blow by. I pulled it out and stuck it in my daughter's 67 mustang. It was formally a 200 inline 6 cylinder. That was 3 years ago. She's still running strong!! We just upgraded it to T5 transmission too. Fun car to drive around!!

      That is one of many reasons why I built myself a gantry crane. Cherry pickers get top heavy and if one seal decides to give up, game over. If you make the mistake of having part or all of your body under the engine (or whatever you're lifting), you're over. I designed and welded mine together in in a week. It'll lift a ton all day long. It'll probably lift a lot more but I haven't tested it with more weight. It cost me about $400 bucks for everything but that was before steel prices went to the moon. I used a Harbor Freight 1500# 110v winch which works great. The only thing I didn't trust was the cheesy looking cable that was on it so I replaced the lousy 3/16th cable with 1/4" stainless steel anti roll cable and 2 5k snatch blocks. It's slower now but with an fully dressed Ford 429 on the hook, the winch hardly slows at all under the weight. Very cool!
