    Good review some things of note.....the Floyd is blocked per Eddies preference. Every EVH whether it's the Peavey Ernie Ball or Fender have been blocked. I'm surprised you brought that up. You are among one of the only review's that did not care for the sound. I love mine as a lot of people do. As a 45 year player I can say for the money this one is hard to beat and the quirks you mentioned are Ed's spec including the pickups. Maybe your's is needing a proper setup. I have little to no tuning problems (it is the cheapest Floyd but consider the price point). If you are trying to set it up as a floating bridge, you will have tuning problems. I own many guitars and this one is played daily.

      @@JohnnyBeane I’ve been getting all my guitars to review through Musicians Friend (they’ve got an aggressive points system lol). MF def isn’t the best for QC, they clearly don’t check the guitars before they go out and I’ve had at least three get messed up in shipment due to crappy packing. That said, I really don’t think my problems were due to bad QC as much as just bad components, wood…and well it being just a subpar instrument. The higher end stuff is def a better product but there’s def better companies out there for a guitar under 1k (PRS SE, any Schecter or ESP LTD for example). Kills me to say anything negative about a product with EVH’s name on it…but a bad product is a bad product.

    I beg to differ. I own LP, PRS, Jackson, EBMM, and 3 EVH standards. I agree that the necks on these guitars are to die for which is huge. The body felt extremely comfortable as well. As far as the tone wood goes, I didn’t think the basswood body sounded horrible. My EBMM EVH, that’s valued over $5000 is also basswood and it’s sounds great. The pickups are a bit weak, lacks articulation, but not a disaster by any means. The fit and finish were very good, clean fret work, nice finish. I would say a pick up upgrade would be a good option, but not necessary, and a big brass trem block turns this guitar into a high quality instrument that sounds and plays like a guitar costing 4 times the price. Did I mention the neck is 11 out 10! Love the neck!!

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, but you're comparing apples to oranges. The quality of a $5k guitar doesn't have anything to do with the quality of a $500 one. This guitar has horrible woods and among some of the worst performing hardware I've every played. No amount of EVH branding can change the fact that there are many superior options from other companies. Much like Sterling by Music Man, they're hiding behind the names printed on the headstocks and the great quality of the legit models. Don't be fooled, this guitar sucked and it's not worth your money.

    The Standard has a poplar body, not basswood. On the EVH site de description says Basswood but the specs says Poplar. I wrote to EVH and they confirmed poplar. Not a propblem since this guitar sounds and feel awesome.

      Thanks for watching! A brass block is def a great way to improve the tone of any instrument but I'm not sure if it would be worth it in this particular model. Very informative review! Thank you, you just saved me some money because the Sterling axis and the EVH WG-standard are two guitars I've considered adding to my collection, which are remarkably better guitars than either of those. I keep hoping to run into budget instruments that aren't completely feculent. A couple surprises have been the Fire Fly Les Paul, which sports a $250 dollar price tag and free shipping right out of the factory and is on par with Gibson Les Paul Standard and studio models.I think I actually Like it better than my Gibson and there is no question on the price point. The Schecter C-6 Plus models are super Strats that run around $359 new with free shipping. They are not on par with their siblings, the Sun Valley Super Sreder at around $1,000 and the C-1 signature models around $2100. You definitely get what you pay for with some of these guitars... but the Schecter C-6 is a very nice for an entry level or mid level guitar.\
    It's a little disappointing that better materials weren't used in the entry level EVH guitars. There is nothing that makes playing less enjoyable than an instrument that gets your attention more than your attention to playing.

    Bro, please take what I say as constructive criticism and not trolling you. First, you showed as your ignorance straight off when you were mentioning most of the "Bad" points. The "Tone" remark was very strange because in the same breath you mentioned how the more expensive Ernie ball sounds great. Well, most Ernie ball guitars are made with a Basswood body. So basically you are saying that this basswood sucks, but Ernie balls Basswood sounds great on some of its guitars. That is just weird.. The other things you mentioned about the location of the selector switch and the flush mount bridge just shows you didn't understand what you had. The guitar is made like that way because it was Eddies design that he liked the best because it worked for him on and off stage. If you don't like the guitar for your given reasons that's just fine, but understand it was built to the exact specifications of arguably the greatest guitar player of all time. Alrighty, point made, and I'll leave you in peace my friend.. Keep up the great content and playing! Peace..

      He's right about tone woods though. I've tried to go as cheap as possible in the past but always return it for the 3k version. And in doing that I've seen the wood ranges among many brands. It makes a huge difference, I don't care what anyone says.

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all pieces of wood sound the same for a starter, and the issues with tone is equally connected, or more so connected, to the hardware and the hardware on this guitar is objectively junk. It doesn't stay in tune, won't flutter and by not having a routing underneath the bridge it limits how much you can pull up on the bar. Those limitations are negative and need to be mentioned in a review...that's the point of the video. If those things don't bother you, that's fine but using an appeal to authority fallacy doesn't change the fact that its a poorly made guitar with sub par hardware. Doesn't matter how great EVH was (rest in peace), there's far superior instruments being offered by other brands right now. Thanks for watching.

    • @DecapitatedPlaythings
      @DecapitatedPlaythings ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@aminorerror It wasn't meant to be floating though. You are actually using the bridge incorrectly which would certainly cause tuning issues.

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the guitar came out of the box from the factory setup with a tiny gap between the body and the bridge and being as you adjust the action height using the posts on the bridge it was impossible with the relief and fret level to lower the bridge touching the body of the guitar. The bridge pivots on posts with knife edges and is a double locking system, it makes no difference if it's slightly floating or not with tuning stability.

  • @MarbsMusic
    @MarbsMusic ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good thoughts, a little more research might have answered some of your questions before review. The guitars is the lower end of the Eddie Van Halen design. The trem is supposed to be flush with the body and non floating. You should only be able to dive with it. In regards to the switch, Eddie moved it there when he switched from EBMM to Peavey then that placement was kept for the EVH models. These aren't flaws, the are design choices and some people really like them quite a lot.
    That being said the FR Special isn't a great bridge, as noted it should be flush to the body but once setup it sounds like yours wasn't doing that so you weren't able to set it up how you like it or how it was designed. The saddles on those tend to wear quickly as well.
    The import Wolfgangs usually sound really good for hard rock but I'm not sure about the pots on that model, they sound fine on the MIM version but no where nears as clear as they do on the US or older MIJ models which had the US versions of the pickups.
    Tonewood, I don't believe it's because it's basswood. I have multiple high end Ibanez that are basswood, the US EVH signature model of this and an old MIJ Special Woflgang all of them are tonally amazing. I believe this one was a dud for some reason. I say that because I had a Standard for about 6 months and experienced much of what you describe except I liked the switch placement. I sold it and didn't pickup another for years until I traded for the 2010 MIJ and loved it so much I bought the signature and a MIM special as well. They are truly amazing guitars, if you get a chance to try one of the higher end models I think you will be very surprised vs this one.
    Last note... I sold a PRS P24 recently because while it was nice the switch was so low it was almost impossible to reach playing live. I don't understand their switch placement either :)

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, I disagree about the bridge. First, it came from the factory with a slight float and when setup with the correct relief of the neck and action height on the bridge it was impossible to get the bridge to rest on the body of the guitar. That's bad QC and my job isn't to fix mistakes from the factory when reviewing a guitar, it's to present how it performed and this one SUCKED. Probably the worst of the 11 guitars I reviewed at the same time when I made this video. It also doesn't matter if it's supposed to rest on the body, it's a double locking system. There shouldn't be any give in the system if it's any good because it locks in both the bridge and the nut. Lastly, this isn't a cheap guitar. Retail is the better part of a grand and that's absolutely an absurd price for this piece of trash. Appreciate you watching and commenting!

Kinda like Sterling by Music Man stuff, you get tricked because they cosmetically look exactly like the high end stuff that you want to give em the benefit of the doubt. Such a shame, I hope they up their game because the stuff Schecter or ESP LTD is putting out puts these brands to shame!

  • @KurtS5150
    @KurtS5150 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Rob, I’m not sure you got a good guitar here 1/10 of these has a chance of not being good. Basswood is a good tone wood in my opinion. Maybe the neck & neck connection is keeping it from resonating. I own a Standard & it is one of my main players. The data on the Floyd is inaccurate. These are not floating trems. They are made to sit directly on the body. With a proper set up they sit perfect. You may need to remove the block shim. The only routed Wolfgang’s are the arch tops & the route helps keep them flat. There is no such thing as a floating trem on a EVH. If your Floyd isn’t laying on the body, that robs tone as well.

    • @aminorerror
      @aminorerror  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Kurt, you seem like you have far more experience than I do with EVH guitars and their quirks. What I can say is that the bridge had a slight float to is from the factory, it wasn't resting on the body. It had a slight gap and when I had adjusted everything to get the guitar to play with the correct action it would have been impossible for the bridge to rest on the body. You're right, I would have had to do some major shim work to get the bridge to sit on the body and that also seems to silly as the primary way of adjusting the action is the posts. Basswood can sound good but in my experience 9 times outta 10 it doesn't. Either way I stand by my criticism: I think the bridge is bad and regardless of what kind of wood the guitar was made out of, it was a bad piece of wood and a cheap crappy sounding instrument not worth of Eddie's name being put on it. Appreciate you watching and the feedback!

  • @kanuuker
    @kanuuker 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Tonewood is a myth. The sound comes from the pickups and the strings. I promise, two different woods will sound exactly the same in a recording if you use the same pickups. Also, the tremolo wasn't routed because that's how Eddie had his set up. There are other guitars that do this as well. It's not a bad setup, it's just one that you don't like.

    • @aminorerror

      I promise you're wrong, I know from 25 years experience recording that it def does make a difference. The bridge on this guitar and the instrument in general is trash, slapping EVH's name on it doesn't change that fact. Thanks for watching.

    I got this guitar same finish for 359.99 used. At that price it's a mod platform, and after upgrading saddles and hardware and a big brass block with routing to make room, an extra spring to keep the trem plate decked, all told i am in about a hundred fifty in parts and tools and about 4 hours of work. It roars, but still has that relative lack of high end articulation for something that's supposed to be a screamer. The floyd special is awful and 100% the worst element of this guitar, i replaced everything but the plate and posts with stainless or hardened steel. Still junk compared to the original floyd on my esp. I want to love this guitar, but you're right even with sustain for days its not very tonally vibrant. I wonder about the paint, and may strip it. If i do, i'll update on what the body composition turns out to be. Wouldn't be surprised to find a bunch of basswood scrap chunks glued up like a walmart steak.

      🙄 yes you’ve commented the same thing like 3 times now about tone wood, no it’s not proven and for that matter spending 30 seconds to talk about the quality of the materials an instrument is made of is completely reasonable in a review. This tremolo is not to EVH’s spec either, it’s a cheap shitty knockoff of the legit hardware used on the guitars he actually played. Just cause they look the same cosmetically doesn’t mean they’re even remotely of the same quality, and spoiler alert this bridge is a hot turd. Thanks for watching.

    I love my WG Standard but truth be told, it needed work right out of the box to get to the quality level that I like in my instruments. There were at least 10 slightly high frets that needs leveling, crowning, and dressing. The Floyd Rose special is junk and they don't last for a gigging musician. I upgraded with brass block, steel saddles, and hardened inserts. I dropped a Bourne;s low friction volume pot in. This guitar smokes now and every bit as good as my Wolfgang Special now.
