    Brilliant. My rim had cracks and the manufacturer sent me a new replacement rim. I was able to successfully change with your technique. Thank you, again!

    Great video. Ive been doing my own bike maintenance for 30 years but never attempted a rim swap before. Took my time and followed your instructions. It came out perfect on first attempt, Thanks very much.

    Your older wheel building video helped me build a 20" a 48 spoke unicycle wheel. There are surprisingly few good wheel building tutorials on here. Great work. Your channel deserves much more traffic!

    Damn, great video! I really wish I had seen this before my last wheel issue. Had to swap a broken rim and went with the "remove every spoke and rebuild from scratch" method. Had to do it twice because I got the new rim backwards on the first try(asymmetric rim). This video would have saved me hours, and will on the next one, thank you!

    Thanks for the Tutorial. I have had a car crash with my bike and my rear wheel is defected since then. My Local Bike shop trued it several times, but it always returns to its bend state. The LBS said there are no replacement wheels available, so they can't change it. I googled for hours and confirmed that it is impossible for me to purchase a complete replacement wheel. But I found fitting rims (including the exact same one). And since my Hub and spokes are in good shape I'm going to attempt the swap. Really nervous about the truing though.

    • @MP-zf7kg
      @MP-zf7kg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm no pro, so take it FWIW. I ride a lot of miles, so I'm constantly breaking spokes. After a while, "truing" is a luxury. "Good enough" is the norm. What this entails is that at times I'll loosen every single spoke, wait for the rim to settle, then snug by fingers first, then by tool.
      This actually works reasonably well. One benefit of this process is it releases all the tension in the rim and you can let it relax to its current normal state before you tighten the spokes.

  • @iamamodel7
    @iamamodel7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A suggestion for you Ali. I thought of a method and then tried it - I run a piece of electrical tape over each crossover, then used a cordless driver to undo all the nipples in one go, take the old rim off. Since the spokes are all secured, the spokes and hub remain free-standing, and then the new rim goes on. It's very fast. I'm also thinking next time I count the extraction revolutions on the drive and NDS so I can get closer with the driver before getting out the spoke key for completion.

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only reason I don’t do this is because it can be very easy to scratch the rim trying to get the spokes lined up. I’m sure if you’re careful it’s possible not to scratch but for just a couple of extra minutes I prefer doing them individually

    • @iamamodel7
      @iamamodel7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ali_Clarkson Ah. So you have tried it. That's good to know. Agreed re scratching the rim.

    Exactly how I do it when I need to. Think when you had the spokes split between the 2 rims you should have brought it up to tension and them mounted a nice fat tyre with 2 separate inner tubes :-D :-p

    Wheel building has always seemed daunting to me. How much do you think you can save vs a prebuilt wheelset?

    • @dtape
      @dtape ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not just the money that you save buying a new single wheel, it's being able to easily do your own tension and truing adjustments as needed anytime.
      I am hard on my commuter ebike with heavy rack loads and I ride on rough uneven roads and my rear wheel loses tension fairly fast. It's worth having my own truing stand, dish gauge, and tension meter so I can keep my wheels in good shape, instead of coughing up money and spending time hauling a wheel to the bike shop and waiting for service to be completed.

    Unfortunately, what I need to swap is a front hub....no nice shortcut their. However, I have successfully procrastinated for nearly two years and therefore avoided the job.
    If you are wondering why, it's because a liked the idea of a set of touring/winter/gravel wheels on my Diverge and also a set of road/race wheels. I bought a set from another Diverge owner that had upgraded to fancy wheels and had the old standard ones for sale only to find my 2015 model was the only year with the wider diameter through axle.....sigh......

    All the wheels I've built have been bullet proof. But the funny thing is, they all have spokes crossing over the valve stem. So now I'm convinced it must be bad luck to not cross over the valve stem.

  • @mattmaxon7783

    My rear wheel has a large 12spd cassette requiring different length spokes making one side of the hub off center from the rim any tips to avoid disaster since the dishing isn't symmetrical ? I also heard on other videos it is recommended you change the spokes every 1000 miles, since I'm approaching 3000 miles I have slight concern

  • @kalebfrog
    @kalebfrog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your videos, you're an incredible rider, but absolutely not. Spokes and nipples are one time use items. Once a wheel is built and tensioned, presumably ridden on, gotta replace spokes and nipples. Calculating spoke length is pretty easy with the qbp spoke calculator. Sheldon brown has a great guide to measuring your hub and erd. Keep doing cool shit!

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I disagree, having done this plenty of times with no issue I can definitely recommend reusing spokes and nipples multiple times
