This was very helpful! Thank you! I just bought a 40th anniversary FZ without the center diff lock button so we thought it wasn’t a “triple lock”. Not a big deal to me because I wasn’t thinking of going heavy off roading, but good to know that you can just add a button for the center diff lock.
Great video, I'm learning so much from you! Most of this stuff I don't think I ever learned when I was learning on my own to talk cars with my dad when I was a teen. And anything I did learn, I've long since forgotten. You make it easy to understand too which I like! Thanks so much Chris ❤️ Hope you can go adventuring again soon.
So great to watch the evolution of the “Rhino” (wink)! Restoration can be frustrating at times, but I can tell that’s not gonna ruin your fun. Good video, great explanation of everything and lovely setting. Hope we can continue following along with Project 80 Series!
You were very very lucky my friend. If the actuator motor does go bad.. be aware that they are not longer available from Toyota .. period. If you do find a NOS somewhere, be prepared to pay $$$$. I just replaced mine, (found one on e-bay.. of all places ) and had to get the actuator from overseas (the middle east).. 500 bucks. Local in the USA was priced at $1000, but as I said.. not available from Toyota, even though many websites say they have them.. they do not. .. Also, congrats on having a triple lock 80 series (CDL plus from and rear differential lockers). they are rare. Fortunately, the actuators for the axle diff's seem to be around. Great vid.. Thanks!!
A couple of things: The center diff has a viscous fluid in it so you don't always need it locked to have it work effectively. The switch you just put in there does lock the center diff to split power 50-50 front to rear while in 4-high. You can not use the switch to unlock the center diff while in 4-low. You need to do the 7-pin mod for that. The reason that this mod is effective is that when you are on tight switchbacks but need to be in 4-low you won't be binding the axles. Easy to look up how to do it on the Slee website and other places. Does your 80 really have front and rear lockers? I thought in another video you said you were going to install them.
Reminds me of how my parents still use a '99 Mercedes Benz and something connecting to the piston kept rattling. My dad had to go out to NJ to fix it and pick up his other car there
learning a lot and enjoying the vids... Love the things yaw talk about... We also love your streams too... If your not watching meaty's stream you need too... The Meat Head Nation has the best people and it's fun and relaxing and we look forward for Monday's and Wednesday's to watch his stream...
Man I am really worried about the Backbone Fire near Payson. I live in Phx and I love going to Pine and Strawberry. . Nice drive from Payson to Flagstaff

2:52 that’s 100% not true. Toyota uses a limited slip in the center diff. It’s not an open diff.

It's always something that breaks. But that's what makes it fun! Great video man!
