    I agree I'd prefer purely episodic over the odd non-committal hybrid we got. In other words my preferences would be
    1. Story based
    2. Purely episodic
    3. Strange mix of the two (what we got)

      Totally agree. It was great to have something different from previous seasons though.

    I would´ve prefered if Ghost game would´ve slowy develop a story with continuity as the series advanced rather than just staying episodic. Don´t get me wrong the episodic episodes were great and as you said (and I also completely agree) the horror aesthetic fits really well with digimon. It gave the franchise an identity/aesthetic that was easily recognizable by fans and non-fans.
    There were definitely some episodes that were genuinely worthy of being considered creepy, with messed up scenarios or even scary. But the promise of a bigger plot developing in the sidelines was really exciting and yet never paid off. I would´ve love to see the main trio develop instead of staying as static characters that forget everything that happened in the previous episode because it kills the horror atmosphere. Not to mention that the main trio genuinely would´ve benefit from continuity and character development because they were overall quite likeable and with a pretty good character design and also had a relatively interesting dynamic with their digimon (hiro and gammamon being like older brother and little brother, Jellymon teasing kiyoshiro and angoramon being some kind of guardian to Ruli).
    I don´t need for them to end up saving the universe but it would´ve been nice see them saving at least their city or even their school in a well build horror/mystery story.
    The problem I have with the episodic format is that once you start to notice the patterns in the episodes you can´t unsee them and that can make the show very predictable. In the anime that we got they usually start the episode being decently creepy or mysterious in the first part just for it to become an action show in the second half where the digimon causing the problem is stopped by either realizing that it´s all a missunderstanding or ends with Hiro pulling a "you know, I used to be like you" kind of speech that kills the scary atmosphere that the first part of the episodes tried to build. Not every episodic episode is like that though (the episode with ajatarmon being a great example of it). But the problem is that because it has to be episodic and end things in the same episode by turning into a regular action show for kids, the series can´t commit to the horror aspect of it and create things like clifthangers to engage the audience even more than it already does with the episodes with consistent horror elements. I think the opening is a pretty good example of the pattern I´m referring to (the first half of the opening is akin to the one of a ghost/horror related anime while the second part is just focused on showing action).
    I´m almost convinced that there was genuine interest in making Digimon Ghost Game a great horror themed story, that they tried to create a story with continuity and plot progression (and thus left some bits to create such kind of story just in case they managed to get permission) but that someone in charge of the anime didn´t allow the writters to do it.
    Honestly, I wouldn´t mind watching a sequel to ghost game (maybe in the form of a time skip with the same cast but maybe slightly older) that could achieve what it almost manage to create.
    Side note: One problem that I personally think digimon always had is the fact that no one can tell what the story is really about because it always changes the story itself (and its aesthetic). In one season it can be a story about 7 kids trying to survive in a new unknown world, it can be some kids trying to live their lives while secretly alternating between two worlds and looking for special items, it can be a story where digimon is a popular card game, it can be a story where humans turn into digimon, a story where the people with digimon are essentially cops, a story where digimon fuse with each other, etc. There´s no consistency, neither with the story or with the aesthetic of the franchise. The only constant is the existence of digital monsters but even that can change drastically how it works and how they relate to the human characters depending of the season. Digimon ghost game by comparison felt like as if the franchise finally found an aesthetic that fits with what the digimon are and tried to build a story with that in mind (this horror aesthetic in particular works particularly well for digimon in opinion precisely because the vast majority of digimon aren´t necesarily cute and that many of them can be really dangerous even if they are). So ghost game just based on its theme already had something good going on. A clear and potentially consistent theme/aesthetic for the franchise that sadly was obstructed by the episode nature of the show.
    Sorry for the ridiculously long comment. I tend to write a lot sometimes.

    I loved the concept and a lot of episodes were really fun. The main cast, especially Kiyoshiro and Jellymon, were fairly likeable, but I feel Hiro could have received more development. I really had so many theories on how the plot would go and about the series main mysteries of how they would get to the Digital World, on Hokuto and GulusGammamon, etc.
    I feel they just ran out of time to really follow thru on them. It feels like there was some setup even as far as Lilithmon's and ZeedMillenniummon's episodes. But then they switched gears and jumped to the final arc, and then started copping out on everything.

    Honestly... you've got it pretty spot on when you said the sprinkling of spot might be the 'Issue'. The Mon-of-the-week aspect was very good. But the promise of plot just left me feeling empty. Heck, take out Gulusmon's plot related stuff (cause him being in inner darkness is still good horror), and the GRB, and the corrupted digiworld, and just end with Quantumon turning up to have them make a place for digimon and humans, it would work.

  • @IgnitedQuils
    @IgnitedQuils ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I think the episodic format is very creative. Since Digimon are digital lifeforms and treating them as ghosts in typical horror stories is nice to see. The characters also do some investigating like you see in them. As you said, the individual episodes are some of the best in the show, such as Yuto and Ajatarmon, the scientist who died, etc. The emotional stakes in the individual episodes work with the episodic format.
    Each of the characters are distinct in their own, even the partner Digimon which makes you care for them more because they’re not carbon copies as the human partners. The variety of the Digimon too. Finally, the animation is often on point, even the evolution sequences and there isn’t a bias for the main Digimon this time! That’s it for the positives.
    For me personally, I felt very engaged up to about episode 25, where people brought up Canoweissmon. And then Digitamamon was interesting, due to him being Angoramon’s best friend, and he asks Angoramon if he’s a human or a Digimon. And does he…? (This is a rhetorical question)
    The issue here is that it fails to balance the episodic and serialized aspects. I say this a lot but it makes sense due to the video. The bridge with the human and Digimon, GulusGammamon, the conflicts of the Digimon settling here. Yes, the many episodes we get matter in terms of the journey but it either never addresses them or addressing them WAY later on really hurts it. As you said, it shouldn’t have sprinkled the plot aspects.
    Also Hiro’s characterization… I didn’t have an issue with him that much but can see what people mean with him not being as reactive. And to extend to the main characters, they lack agency in investigating the issue with Digimon appearing. Every time, you see humans nearly dying, being flooded, taken, etc. And the town doesn’t talk about it as if time is reset or if they have amnesia. The finale too feels rushed and is the shortest final arc, unless you count Hunters.
    I rate it a 5/10. I would’ve been fine if it was either mainly serialized, balanced or just episodic.

    I completely agree. This is a great show for newcomers to the series, but the sub par main plot and lack of good character development of the main cast does hold it back. It would have been better if it didn't have a main plot and was just mon of the week. I think mixing Digimon and horror was an amazing concept especially since a lot of the monsters from monster collecting series are usually based off Youkai. Honestly Youkai Watch's anime could have done this but it went way too far into comedy for me to take it seriously. Ghost Game actually gave me chills with some episodes and I really liked it for that.
    I also like how creative some of the ideas were for some of these episodes, but the time constraint of concluding them in one episode and the noticeable differences between episodes that had a budget and episodes that didn't hold back some really good ideas. I'd say about 65% to 70% of the episodes were good to great while the rest were pretty meh at worst which is actually pretty good for a longer show like this one.
    If there was anything that I wished they would have done it was follow up episodes with some of the mon of the week. A lot of them said "We'll meet again" and that just never happened. I get the feeling the showrunners would have done 100+ episodes, and probably had some mon of the week return if they were allowed to. But I think the execs were seeing the show's dwindling ratings over time and told them to wrap it up, this is probably why we got a pretty lackluster exposition heavy conclusion to the main plot.
    All in all I really liked my time with this show, but I definitely think they need to do a less episodic show next because you could see the fan reaction over time, especially with long time fans, to this structure was fairly negative.

    Pros:
    Presented interesting ideas that have never been attempted like Tamers linking with other Tamers Partners.
    Alot of Horror aspects really shines in handful of Episodes that catches you off guard
    Has redeeming qualities when it comes to Music, Gore Violence and few Fight Choreographics.
    Cons: OH BOY IS THERE A PLETHORA OF THEM
    - No Actual Main villain
    Gulusgammamon was a forced villain to make up for their lack of Main Villains because hes a Bad Guy "but this does not mean hes Bad Guy"
    - Weak Tamers
    These are weakest and most pacifistic tamers of the franchise, they rather go the peaceful route to resolve their issues by ask their enemies to cease what theyre doing rather than knocking them down a peg first to assert dominace which usually always works. Theyre like 3 Vash the Stampedes LOVE AND PEACE 🤞. These kids should've grown past this flustered phase since acquiring Perfect most of all Kiyoshiro, hes obtained Mega/Ultimate yet he still remains the same annoying beta male cuck who needs his "Sama" to put him in shape.
    - One Dimensional Characters
    Thanks to this shows episodic format, our protagonists remain dull underdeveloped characters. Only time one of them are beyond one dimension is when they get knocked upside the head and gain a different personality.
    These kids needed their own character arcs terribly, Kiyoshiro most of all.
    - Impetuous Tamers
    They arent proactive in their field as Tamers should be, the children just passively lay back going about their daily lives until the dire situation arises causing more death & havoc to the world than it needs to be. They know theres a pattern in all of these random Digimon jumpings but they do nothing about it even when an enemy digimon (Kuzuha) makes subtle allusions about whats been happening they don't take the time to reflect on what it could mean and how it relates to the mess theyre cleaning up every episode.
    - Tonal Whiplash
    The most egregious example of this is the last episode Hiro broaches Quantumons unforgiving actions, she deflects by saying it was necessary and everybody takes her side in the end like they're fine with that. Its such a major blow to the face. This is why I consider them pansies.
    - Wasted Potential
    There's too many loose ends to count such as Phelesmon, Myotismon, Lilithmon & Zeedmilleniumon. Then theres the complete lack of Arcturusmon after unveiling his design online.
    - Lazy Writing
    The writing has become sloppy it squandered any chance of success. I read on Reddit that the head writer based this show off of TikTok FUČĶING TIKTOK... because get this, modern gen has a short attention span. That is the most incompetent drivel I've ever heard of.

    I liked Ghost Game a lot, even thought I didn't like some episodes.
    Yeah, if the show didn't have a main plot splited in some episodes, Ghost Game would be better. But I enjoyed it a lot and I will rewatch it later.
    That is a nice way to say that it is subjective if a Digimon season is good or bad because each person has his/her/their own opinion. That is why we have so many different top 10 list of Digimon seasons and it is great having different opinions and respecting each other.

    • @ashelygordon669
      @ashelygordon669 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s really unfair to call it a quote on quote a “bad” show, if some people feel that way or dislike Digimon Ghost Game, then that’s perfectly understandable and I am genuinely saying this in front of everyone, just because someone likes/dislikes a show doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good or bad show considering that everyone has their opinions and preferences on what they like or dislike in general; some people love episodic shows while others might prefer overarching story arcs.
      Both of them have their pros and cons which is up to you because I personally experienced both and again I personally love Digimon Ghost Game a lot but some people don’t have to be obligated to watch it and if some people don’t like it or feel like it’s a bad show, then that’s reasonable and I respect everyone’s opinion!!! 👌🏻✌🏻

  • @lasagnakob9908
    @lasagnakob9908 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honestly, I give it a 5/10. It did something original with Digimon in an enjoyable way, balancing out the cute moments with ones of horror; however, I feel like the show could have benefited from having some mini-arcs separate from the episodic format to build character and really clue you in on things going on, instead of drip feeding us clues among random episodes until the climax at the end. It felt like a drag binging Ghost Game, only going so far because I was interested in why certain Digimon showed up when Gulus did; only to be completely disappointed when it turns out they only exist to stop Gulus if he ran free (and be completely useless at the job no less btw.)
    Ghost Game felt like it had direction, and then Episode 13 came and went... and then it's just the monster of the week for 50 episodes with some moments where the Digimon achieve new evolutions. There was so little story building up to that point, heck, the plot to certain episodes are literally repeated (they had 2 Halloween specials that are so similar that the second was kind of boring.)
    It's really kind of a shame to be honest, because as much as I liked the show, I didn't love it, and I only intend on watching certain episodes once the English dub is released (at least if it's any good anyway.) They really kind of botched the show here, which in a way makes me think it was supposed to have an original run of 13 or 14 episodes as an ad for Vital Hero (like how Adventure 01 wasn't originally planned to run as long as it did) then everything between this and episode 64 was just to fill a quota. The end was a bit of a let down, because it just hits you with the answer to all the mysteries at once, and the prophesied 'end of the world' felt incredibly forced. I don't hate Ghost Game, but I totally understand why some people don't like it either.

  • @Zigulart
    @Zigulart ปีที่แล้ว +7

    At the end everything depend on what you want to see. Personally, Ghost Game ended up being more frustrating than anything, but I understand the fans who enjoyed watching it casually, that's just not my style.
    The characters may be charismatic and all, but that alone is not enough to make me watch 67 episodes of a show. I'm the kind of person that thinks if almost nothing really changes through the course of the season, other than your standard new evolution up-grade, it will be just a matter of time until I get bored of the status quo. That's why I couldn't get past the thirty-something episode mark.
    Also, I never really got into the Scooby-Doo style of mystery solving adventure as a kid. I would rather watch Courage the Cowardly Dog, or maybe Danny Phantom if I wanted something more action packed. When it comes to the horror genre maybe something closer to the Digimon Survive story would've actually satisfy me, but definitely not this.

    @Dracomata 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I like ghost game, but you can't just start up a story and wait until the end to finish up that story. It made the episodes feel like filler as a result of waiting to see what the deal was with GulusGammamon and the digital world. They sprinkled breadcrumbs throughout the series but once again it is more or less blink and you'll miss it moments, that can once again be written off as filler. They needed to actually work on the story A LOT sooner, especially since they wrapped up said story in the FINAL TWO episodes. There were villians propped up to maybe be reoccuring, but then things happened. I am glad Clockmon got resolved as early as it did but Dracmon, the second 'reoccuring' villian that was set up, didn't need to wait until it was time for Ultimates, and its death was from one of its allies, which kind of cheapened Dracmon as it was like "You thought Dracmon was bad? This digimon is far worse! You can tell cause Dracmon is dead now!" There is no balance between the story that was set up and waited for and the episodic thing Ghost Game sought to do. It wanted to do both but it took too much of the wrong pie, which left a lot of people dissatisfied with how it went.
    For an over 60 episode series, there shouldn't be less than 10 episodes that have your story in it. I get its a mystery but there should be more put into said story. They made the camping trip, and the episodes that followed the first appearence of Gulus feel like FILLER, when that was an emotional point for Gammamon and Hiro as Hiro was scared that Gulus would come back (more like everyone else was), while Gammamon was processing Bokomon's death. Like that is some emotion shit right there, and how the Ghost game set up the story for those episodes, made it feel like filler. There is a problem if the emotional progression of the characters feel like filler, which is one of the consequences of their episodic format. They tease a story but then spend 90% of the run time on their monster of the week. Either remove the story shit, or tone it down, or devote more time to the story so its not as rushed as it is.
    Also Ruli was borderline suicidal and you can not convince me other wise. Like jesus christ, calm the fuck down, you keep almost dying. STOP SEEKING THIS OUT ON PURPOSE! WHERE IS YOUR SELF PRESERVATION! Part of the problem is that it is episodic so to some degree 'a status quo' has to be resolved, but like, at some point, you are expecting Ruli to have AT LEAST a little bit more of a "Hey this could be dangerous, slow the fuck down" kind of thought instead of "Oooh! Spooky thing! Do you think I can die today?" It feels like its the later, it ALWAYS felt like the later with her! Like this feels like she is trying to kill herself. You think by the fifth time of almost dying she'd chill the fuck out and be more cautious, but no.

    I'll try to keep my personal thoughts brief on ghost game.
    The episodic format wouldn't be so bad, if ghost game didn't' hint at a plot throughout the series and failed to do anything meaningful with those hints. I was left hoping for things to happen that never did occur, which meant I grew bored of ghost game over time.
    Plot resolution was pretty weak overall because ghost game was so determined to make peaceful resolutions happen.
    Not enough was done to *show* how important the bonds between digimon and human were. Even with it's issues, I felt that Adv 2020 did a very good job of emphasizing the how important the bonds between digimon/partner were. And that made me care for the partnerships more than ghost game did.
    Not enough character work was used to flesh out the trio in ghost game. Even in an episodic series it should be possible to show characters slowly change and grow over time. If that had happened, I would have become more invested in seeing what happened with Hiro, Ruli and Kiyoshiro. And Ruli WISHES she was as charming and funny as adv 2020's mimi was.
    I was really excited for ghost game when it first started, but the way it was written ended up boring me so much that I'm already forgetting it's existence. And I can't call it a 'good series' because of it's flaws, and it frustrates me having to speak negatively about it.

  • @hollyswackyworld

    I'd say it was good for the most part. Biggest issue was it's pacing. If it wasn't episodic and more akin to Digimon Adventure 2020 I'd probably be not too happy, but since the production committee from day one said it's a episodic Monster of the Week thing, I ended up treating it like a Saturday Morning Cartoon. I think the over arching mystery could have been paced much better... Gulus' debut was and still is in my mind one of Ghost Game's best episodes but as time wore on his impact became diluted till the finale where he decided to go from 0 to 100. I also think the warp Digivoloution bit was a tad shoehorned in and the time limit thing should have been removed once the group reached mega.
    I will say the new Digimon they introduced (yes, even the recolours) were some fun freaks to watch and I really enjoyed Ghost Game giving Digimon who hadn't appeared in an anime or had a tiny presence in one a full episode. Still I would have liked to have seen a couple of spooky Digimon make the cut. Venom Vamdemon Undead would have been a buck wild MotW and I wish Zombiemon got in. Alas their design is still lost to time so who knows if he'll ever show up in anything...
    Big shout out to Quartzmon. Your episode made me uncomfortable at the start but your goal made me go D'aww in the end.

    For me we already have enough evidence to say that Ghost Game was cancelled. Aside from Acturusmon and Próximamon, several Digimon such as Zanmtsumon, Fumamon and Bombermon that were created for the series were not animated although almost all of the Digimon that were in the protagonists' DIMs appeared in the series. Other than that these Digimons won cards in the TCG. Bandai wouldn't pay Kejin Watanabe to design new Digimon for Glost Game simply because they didn't appear in the series.

      Yeah Bandai and Toei were separate with the designs. That Regulusmon was meant to be the antagonist from the start and the final arc was already drafted before his later forms were designed. But they weren’t designed from Toei themselves.

    @the_echoYT ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The thing for me about Ghost Game being "an episodic show" is that every Digimon series is, to some degree, an episodic show. Every series has a good portion of its episodes spent on monster-of-the-week scenarios. In fact, I remember a certain arc of Adventure 2020 that a lot of people hated for being episodic, even though a lot of those episodes absolutely slapped. Ghost Game committing (in theory) to this isn't in and of itself a bad thing, but the problem lies in how it was done, and The X-Files is a perfect series to compare it to in order to see what went wrong.
    1. Focus. The X-Files more or less explicitly divides episodes between "main narrative" and "MotW." Ghost Game tried to have it both ways, dropping a crumb of narrative in an otherwise unassuming, standard episode. Hell, I'm not sure if *any* episode before 66 is wholly focused on the main narrative, even the first one.
    2. Mystery and novelty. In The X-Files, every episode is a new mystery. A new monster or alien or whatever, and figuring it out is part of the fun. It's always different, and even crime shows can make 1000 different scenarios for the same crime. In Ghost Game, we know by default that the culprit is a Digimon, and we know the crazy situation is one of their powers that will disappear when they're defeated in combat. Beyond this, the horror element in Ghost Game is almost universally body horror, primarily body transformations. And the resolution is very often sudden and unsatisfying ("this is a misunderstanding," deus ex BlackTailmon/Thetismon, "see you again (not)"). Over time this makes the episodes feel very repetitive and, frankly, boring.
    3. Continuity and consistency. Even when The X-Files isn't pushing its main narrative, there are long-term character arcs that slowly build over the course of the one-off mysteries. This keeps long-term viewers invested and rewarded, while keeping these episodes open to new viewers and enjoyable as a singular rewatch. Ghost Game... simply doesn't. This especially hurts Digimon, as the premise of partners and evolution almost demands developing character bonds over time.
    All this combines into a series that feels like it's meandering, spinning its wheels, and failing to understand what it's actually trying to do.
    And the weird thing is... Ghost Game *was* doing it right, seemingly. Looking at the episode list, I would say up to episode 21 (Arukenimon), Ghost Game *is* developing its characters and slowly peeling back the mystery of its main plot. This is where the bulk of the "I'll be back" villains appeared. This is where Piccolomon happened. There were two Gulus appearances. Other humans interacting with Digimon. Ruli and Jellymon syncing up. Things were happening.
    But then there's that 6-week hiatus. And... all of it stopped. I can't help but feel like something happened which shifted the focus of the show during this time.
    I'm sure if you look back at forums and reviews this is where the general opinion and hopefulness around the series starts to wane and drop off significantly, as from this point onward any sort of development halts entirely. Kotarou, Aoi and Mika appear much less often, Lirurun almost never gets mentioned, Hiro stops being investigative, Angoramon almost never visits the Digimon community he built, character relationships stagnate and nothing that happens in any episode actually seems to matter.
    Despite it being episodic even in the beginning, there's a very clear reason why people said it had potential, why people were so excited, and why that excitement very quickly faded away. It feels as though there was a bigger plan in place, but the plug got pulled halfway through and they just had to find a way to fill the episodes.

      @JustinVillemure ปีที่แล้ว +2

      such a bad take. Sorry, but Digimon shows like Tamers and 01 weren't episodic, in all of Tamers, there's one episode that serves no purpose to the plot - ONE. In Adventure 01, I can't off the top of my head think of such an episode. I don't think you understand what makes something episodic... Every mon of the week even helped serve the overall narrative, it wasn't just a beat in the story to add action, it always had a purposeful meaning. In 01, the first arc, while might seem like just mons of the week, was specifically set up for the greater plot with Devimon -- the black gears -- Seadramon, Shellmon and Kuwagamon were the only ones not directly tied to this, but its at the same time, to establish some Digimon are just bad.
      Again, Tamers is all story. Nothing episodic about it. The characters developed, the plot developed.
      Digimon, is not simply episodic, though there may be some odd episodes here and there that don't do as much for the plot - but Digimon series are CONSISTENTLY PLOT DRIVEN.
      Oh, except Ghost Game - the only Digimon series that focused on episodic and not plot.

    • @the_echoYT
      @the_echoYT ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JustinVillemure The bad Digimon on File Island being infected by the black gears doesn't make them integral to the storyline. It's just a narrative backdrop to justify the encounter (same as GG's "someone is sending Digimon to the human world").
      Every Digimon series has monster-of-the-week episodes, especially in the first act when stakes are low and plot doesn't progress much.
      But, as you said, the characters develop and long-term plot threads are slowly unraveled. I mentioned that further into my comment as one of the things episodic series do to keep recurrent viewers engaged. Even *extremely* episodic shows like Western cartoons still develop their characters over time and have a sense of continuity.

    • @JustinVillemure
      @JustinVillemure ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@the_echoYT definition ripped from google:
      containing or consisting of a series of loosely connected parts or events.
      Again, the black gears are not a loose connection they are integral to Devimon hunting the digidestin. Character growth and plot progression are by definition not episodic. The episodes in the beginning of Digimon are all connected, the cast are trying to make sense of their new surroundings and its an ongoing adventure that references past episodes - they start off at the same beach in the Seadramon episode (ep 3) after arriving there in episode 2 where episode two begins they just fell off the cliff after facing kuwagamon from episode 1. In ep 4 onward its black gear Digimon and they start to notice the black gears and discern it has an effect on kind digimon by the next episode, which again the events continue to carry over from episode 4 onwards. You are wrong calling it episodic. Its literally all a continuing plot episode to episode. The nature of a show like Digimon is focusing on character growth (of both a human and their Digimon - the latter done via evolution, a visual representation of said growth); so how is this achieved? Well it is a monster isekai aimed at children, so naturally there has to come a climax in the episodes to help showcase said growth - again the setting would dictate a clashing of monsters; Digimon crafted itself a narrative that warrants and justifies this. Kids are in an alien world facing monsters and as they each grow and develop (there are 7 humans that they are developing so early episodes take the time to single out each child and each Digimon) it still does so while a plot is pushed to the forefront through each episode. Again, by definition this is not an episodic show.

Yeah, there was some body horror, and we saw people die, but I never felt that this would keep me up all night. I honestly think the nature of this season hurt it. More people are interested in shows with more story elements. I bet most people stuck with GG because we were promised a good story. They should have just used the Survie as the base of the anime. That would have worked great for a show. There are episodes of GG that I liked, but only the ones that feel like actual Digimon episodes. Overall I don't think I'll return to GG at any point.

    My overall thoughts on the digimon ghost game are that it is a good series. I give it 7/10. I would like to see season 2 of this show. Is it better than 2020? It's a tie between the two.
    The series has a lot of waste potential. There should have been other children that could be alongside the team. Not only that, but as soon main characters got their megas, we should have been able to go to the digital world by then. I would love it if gammon, jellymon, and angoramon had their own ultra form and previous enemies returned for a round 2. I would love to see the main cast go against the demon lords this season. There should be better team-ups while fighting in their mega forms.
    The postive about the series is that it does have good character development for our characters in some parts of the series; the horror beats/reference are pretty good by Digimon standards. The animation can be good times and the soundtrack. The fights are also good. Finally, the characters do not feel like a carbon copy of a previous season of digimon, and their relationships with monsters are quite different by digimon standards.
    I did enjoy my experience with the digimon ghost game, but It could have been so much more if they had given much more plot, act structure, and two-parter, specifically when reaching ultimate and mega form. Gulugammon is such a badass that I will miss his savageness in the series. jellymon and kiyoshiro relationship, possibly girlfriend, was quite adorable. Ruli and Angoramon are the beauty and the beast. However, the way they got mega could have been handled better.

It genuinely feels with how they shifted gears that they didn't expect the series to end when it did, going by Lilithmon taking an interest in GulusGammamon, or some possible setup with Hiro and MoonMillenniummon's crystal.

    Hiro is basically a background character, who's force into the role of a protagonist, and he prefers to be a background character because he doesn't want to do anything. Gammamon, despite being cute, and his role is to be Hiro's partner/baby brother even though he's the only one out of everyone who is something important in the story of possessing the powers of both the main protagonist Digimon like Omnimon, Gallantmon, Imperialdramon, Susanoomon, etc. and main antagonist Digimon like ZeedMillenniummon, Quartzmon, Bagramon, Lucemon, the D-Reaper, etc.
    Kiyoshiro is kind of no different than the other two protagonists, with some personality. Of being smug around his classmates, he is a big chicken who can give Shaggy and Scooby-Doo a round for his money. I'm surprised that the writers didn't make him faint all the time or wet himself for something scary (sometimes he can be brave in some episodes, but it's more like an on-and-off switch when the writers feel like it of making new episodes), he has a mental disorder of eighth-grader syndrome (even though there's nothing special about him other than being smart), he's also useless when it comes to being the brains of the group. He could have been more useful like Izzy, Joe, Yolei, Henry, Thomas, and Rei by being more helpful in using his skills and abilities for his team (even though he barely does that in some episodes). Sometimes, just like his partner Jellymon, it is his fault for getting his team in danger and almost getting killed by his arrogance, irresponsibility, and cowardness (if you're going to ask, it was the episodes that have Frozomon, Jellymon, and Oboromon).

    The show is frustrating. As you said, it is because of the mesh of episodic and plot. Digimon always has been more story focused and strives if it does. Any show does, really. Episodic shows are best and almost exclusively for children and their low attention span and the lesser ability to keep track of things. It is there for them to just have something to watch they enjoy. Ghost game was by nature more mature and appealed more for older audiences, given that some episodes really weren't suiting for children, in a good way. This means you have an episodic show, for non-children. That more or less contradicts itself.
    Sure, people can enjoy episodic shows, but most will get bored quickly, and you lose out on the best part of the show, aka angry twink lizard of doom. Not to mention that, the plot we had, could have been turned into something wonderful. A fantastic story. We have merely a setup for a story, after the show ends. That's ... ridiculously bad writing. I hope, if we ever get another show, it will be everything but episodic. It failed on the reboot of adventure, and it ruined a potentially great thing with ghost game. We do not need episodic Digimon. Kids never needed it back in the day, so they wouldn't need it now. Just do what you do best and make great stories! ... Hell, even Frontiers did better on that part.
    Gammamon, Betel- and Gulusgammamon are my favorite Digimon, so this show was extra frustrating to me personally.

    Short answer - Yes. TERRIBLE anime.
    Long answer - It's terrible, because it has boring characters that feel the same from episode 1 to 67 with no real development. Hiro is such a stale main character, he'd give Adventure 2020 Taichi a run for his money.
    Gammamon is so childish it loses his cuteness by the 10th episode. If Guilmon could show character maturity in the first 13 episodes of Tamers... then Gammamon still referring to death as "Going on a journey" in the final episode has NO excuses.
    The episodic formula doomed the series before it even got to the first GulusGammamon appearance. Almost every new evolution was unearned, and the final 3 episodes felt so rushed, it's like trying to cook a 50 minute dish for 10 minutes.
    It could have been good, but it's objectively not. Ghost Game gets a 2 out of 10, and you'd have to reach for positives to even bump it to a 3.

As the weeks went by however I had more and more slight grievances mainly to do with the writing. I really wanted them to introduce a fourth chosen child at some point as is series tradition but that never happened with maybe Hokuto being the only other human with a digivice. The rushed finale left a lot to be desired even though I actually like how they "power of brotherhooded" the lethal injury away and Regulusmon being peacefully restrained rather than killed, the payoffs weren't particularly satisfying and unless the human/Digimon country ends up being relevant for Seekers that final note was just very weird. I still really like Ghost Game for being so unique and creepy and hope it gets a movie to really wrap things up (I mean we didn't even get to see Arcturusmon and Proximamon) but after rewatching and hearing all the praise you and some other Digitubers have been giving the underrated gem that is Appmon I think that's once again my second favourite leaving GG in 3rd place.
