Freddy was a Texas Treasure. He was in the band called the Texas Tornados. They have a lot of great songs in their catalog. "Laredo Rose", "If That's What You're Thinking", "Who Where You Thinking Of", "Anybody Going to San Antone", "Menocino", "ay te dejo en san antonio", and "(Hey Baby) Que Paso" are a few. One of the members is Flaco Jiménez, he plays the accordian. He plays with Dwight Yoakum some.

Freddy Fender (Baldemar Garza Huerta) born in San Benito, Tx was a favorite of fans in Texas and all over the country. A sound that made him one of the greats of rock and Tejano music.. BCNU..
I remember driving to work one morning in the '70s and hearing this song on country radio for the first time -- and I was shook. My actual thought was, "That's either the best song or the worst song I've ever heard." After hearing it a few times, I decided I truly loved it. And I still love it today. Freddy Fender's voice can cut right through your heart.
"The Elvis of the valley" was one of his nicknames. Freddy Fender was a jewel. A big nice guy who could sing a love song. My Mom and Dad loved him. He has another great one " Wasted Days and Wasted Nights " that is superb. My Dad used to sing these with his band. It made me cry thinking of it. ✌️❤️ from Ky
Your reactions are precious. This 73-year-old man lived through that time period. Freddy was unique and one of the good entertainers. Haven't listened to him in a while. Thank you for sharing and keep the good videos coming. They are very enjoyable. God Bless.

Growing up in Texas in the 70s & 80s there was lots of Freddy Fender & Johnny Rodriguez on the radio. Love them both, but always been more partial too Johnny Rod, he’s a legend.
This song has always been special to me... My father used to sing (Cover and Imitate) it when I was a kid, and he used to bring me to jam sessions with (Literally Dozens) of his musician buddies would all take turns on stage, backing each other up, and just having fun in general... They were held either in local venues, or even in peoples back yards... Brings back lots of memories... I remember many times when my father would get called up to sing this song, everyone would jump out their chairs and onto the dance floor, and if you weren't fast enough, and there was not enough partners available, you might have ended up either sitting it out or dancing by yourself... Very often my father was the ONLY one, out of dozens of musicians that could empty the seats and fill the dance floors... He sang many songs, but this was the song my father was known for... My father never got to meet Freddy... The only big star he ever met was Mel Tillis... They took a Polaroid picture together, shaking hands, and Mel signed it for him.... My father kept that Polaroid taped on the dash of his truck for YEARS, until it literally disintegrated to pieces.. I can't imagine what my father would have done with an autographed picture with "Uncle Freddy".. Probably would have had it blown up and hung it in the living room...
Freddie became a member of a Tejano Super Group called The Texas Tornados. Oddly enough the Texas Tornados were Founded by a couple anglos that were former pop singers that loved Mexican .music
I always loved his music. I was at a Mexican fiesta one time and the band was playing this song. My friend Theresa turned and looked at me, holding her finger and thumb an inch apart. "He doesn't come this close to Freddy Fender", giving a sniff of disgust.
As a child about 12 I met Freddie Fender. He was a friend of my then Brother-In- Law, Roger Schmock. He let me pink on his guitar. Great memories......great person.

You have dove down a very deep rabbit hole here. Mr. Freddie Fender has many many fantastic songs. He was also in a couple of groups. "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" is another great solo. I think you would really like " Who Were You Thinking Of" by the Texas Tornados with Freddie as the lead singers is one you will find amusing. Freddie was born in Texas, but referred to himself as a Tex-Mex. I always loved his voice.
I heard an interview by him where he stated that growing up they had dirt floors that his Mom would sweep every day. Beautiful voice.I enjoyed his music very much.❤
I was just in San Antonio celebrating my grandpas 90th bday and they had a band covering all the songs my grandparents grew up singing and dancing to. This song will forever be in my heart and make me think of my grandpa.

Freddie was from Benito Tx also known as the Tejano lion! A Texas hero and the first Mexican artist to truly break into country. Grew up on him, check the Texas Tornadoes as well his later super group
He is Freddy Fender, a native of San Benito, TX. His real name was Baldemar Huerta. Being Latino in music wasn’t uncommon in those days, but many changed their names to more white sounding names. So he chose Freddy and the surname Fender after this Fender guitar. Another Latino artist of the time was Ritchie Valens who was born Richard Valenzuela.
Rick Trevino also did a bilingual version of "just enough rope". And also one called "uno momento alla," in Spanish that I love. Don't know the complete translation, but love the song

FF was a fantastic Latino artist who produced music of several genres in the 60s and 70s but of course what I am grateful for and what I miss is that he was part of a short lived but beautiful stretch of Latino influenced country music in the 70s that is some of the most beautiful country music we have. It is sad that it was pushed out and I strongly suspect that it was intentionally pushed out by the commercial Nashville industry that Freddie and his fellow Latino artists were not part of (Freddie produced his music right out of his native Texas so he owed no allegiance to Nashville) and I suspect that this is also why even after some very strong efforts to do so, Freddie still has not been inducted into th CMHoF which he so rightfully deserves especially considering some that have been inducted.
