He is not talking about truck driving. He’s singing about being a rock star on his tour bus driving from show to show. It’s the emotional & social ups & downs of a rock musician’s life on the road.🎶

Man suggest that you get Bob Seger Essentials and listen to his Greatest Hits But I think the guy who said he's in a tour bus touring from town to town and I was in Santa Maria and experienced the same thing bunch of redneck cowboys with their cowboy hats and cowboy boots looking at me with long hair and I felt like they were going to run me out in a rail and I went back in the road to film my way out of Santa Maria and a couple of hippies a guy had a girl and I said hey I'll keep on going to the next on-ramp they go no please please some guys came by in a car and threatened us Don't go away sure enough they showed up and they were going to beat us up I grabbed a couple of beer bottles broke them and they said hey we thought you were a peace love dove hippie I said I am but I don't put up with anybody's crap Who wants to hurt me or my hippie friends They got back in my car and said they were going to bring more people and a couple in a Carmen Ghia pulled off the road and came and gave us a ride and I asked why of all places did you stop to get off the freeway to get back on said because we a year ago came through this town hitchhike and got threatened and we thought somebody would just might be needing our help!

Absolutely! I grew up with my parents blaring classic rock like this, and folks today are giving me perspective on how amazing those artists were and yet it was just "normal" to me.
The Eagles, Foreigner, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bob Seger, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty ... too many to mention but many are becoming lost gold, IMO. Lots of awesome country disappearing as well. Bob Seger though... holy smokes, many many crazy good songs! That band is a showing of true talent.

Bob Seger has his own throne in the Pantheon of Rock Gods, no question. He's an absolute genius and a brilliant storyteller. His best attribute, though, is his humility. His has never been too arrogant, too aloof, too into himself. He came from a struggling family and he never lost that perspective. To this day, he still helps people in his hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Yeah man, that's it. Then add to that he's crossing Nebraska, when it is cold. And you can see way out to the horizon and the horizon is forever away, no matter where you look, nothing to see but road, dirt cross roads with a mailbox, harvested fields, and no houses - they are way on down those dirt roads past that distant horizon. And the sun is dim and cold and it all weighs down on you. And you ain't even the one driving, you're just one of the passengers and no one wants to talk because the words seem so small out there between the horizon and the horizon and the cold sun. How long you been driving? How far have you come? How long is left? Yeah, strung out from the road... who needs drugs to feel that? Might need some therapy after remembering it though....

This song was and still is an amazing take on what is like being a touring musician. When it came out it told a story that everyone could relate to thinking about that lifestyle. An epic tale and incredible song. Never get tired of that song and its deep meaning, thank you Bob Seger.

For many years, Bob lived up here in N.Michigan. He is just a very private individual. So if you saw him out and about you, just say hi and not fan drool at him. Celebrities like our town and area because we treat them like anyone else, famous or not. Bob did sell his place up here a few years back.

I lived in Detroit (Ann Arbor actually) for 10 years and got to see Bob Seger in concert around 1982 or 83. Start to finish great songs. In fact, I can't think of any of his songs that weren't great. He's the ultimate singer/songwriter, genuine, authentic, and lacking the celebrity BS that surrounds most rock singers today. His songs tell a story and it's always an interesting one. When I moved to LA I was disappointed that they didn't play his songs nearly as much as I was used to hearing in Detroit. But thanks to TH-cam you can find most of them and a new generation can enjoy them. So many great songs, but try listening to Roll Me Away or Hollywood Nights to get an idea of his range as a song writer.

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band , the albums of my youth . Every time l hear these Segar tunes , man , it takes me back . His song Mainstreet was me circa 1980 . Those times are long gone along with so many people that made it so memorable.for me . Living on the streets with all the other lost souls , all of us just searching for a place to find love . Up on Main Street.

Each person can see some of their life in this song. I see so much of my life when I was in the Navy and people would sometimes judge us thinking we were just women trying to be men. Even the "amplifiers ringing in your head - " I was in ship and shore communications and spent a lot of mornings trying to get to sleep after a long night shift (including a different sort of amplifier) but I can't get the buzz and clatter of a complex work center out of my head.

Yes, there are lots of songs about the troubles of the rock star lifestyle--"Doonesbury" even made a cartoon once about how their contracts require at least one "dues song" per album. For instance, just off the top of my head, Billy Joel, "The Entertainer," Billy Joel, "Piano Man," Simon & Garfunkel, "Homeward Bound," Carole King, "So Far Away," John Denver, "Leaving on a Jet Plane," John Lennon, "The Ballad of John and Yoko," and I'm sure many others

Congratiulations !! First reaction to Turn the Page where the reactor recognizes the whole story. And yes, he is refercing his time with very long hair. In the '70 when you came into a restaurant as a stranger the people look at you and wisper "Is that a woman or a man?" Tiny little detail that nobody ever got. You are very exact, I like that.

  • @rooscow

Lyrics for this song. It's also been covered by Metallica and worth the listen.
    This is from '72 also
    'Bout bein' on the road
It's called "Turn the Page", yeah
    One, two, three, and
On a long and lonesome highway
    East of Omaha
You can listen to the engine
    Moaning out its one-note song
You can think about the woman
Or the girl you knew the night before
But your thoughts will soon be wanderin'
    The way they always do
    When you're riding sixteen hours
And there's nothin' much to do
And you don't feel much like riding
You just wish the trip was through, mm
    Say, here I am
    On the road again
    There I am
    Up on the stage
    Here I go
    Playin' star again
    There I go
    Turn the page
Well, you walk into a restaurant
    Strung out from the road
And you feel the eyes upon you
As you're shakin' off the cold
You pretend it doesn't bother you
But you just want to explode
Most times you can't hear 'em talk
    Other times you can
    All the same old clichés
"Is that a woman or a man?"
    And you always seem outnumbered
You don't dare make a stand
    Here I am
    On the road again
    There I am
    Up on the stage
    Here I go
    Playin' star again
    There I go
    Turn the page
    Out there in the spotlight
    You're a million miles away
    Every ounce of energy
    You try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body
Like the music that you play
    Later in the evening
As you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers
    Ringin' in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette
    Remembering what she said
    Ah, here I am
    On the road again
    There I am
    Up on the stage
    Here I go
    Playin' star again
    There I go
    Turn the page
    Ah, here I am
    On the road again
    There I am
    Up on the stage
    Here I go
    Playin' star again
    There I go
    There I go
    Thank you

it is good to hear someone's first time reactions to music I have loved. Music has been siloed for so long. It is trapped in time loops and the narrow subcultures that define tribal identities. I don't think musicians have rigid walls around their musical tastes but listeners and music sellers often do. Thank you for reminding me why I love these songs and artists.
