One of the greatest singer/songwriters and storytellers of all time, and that's saying something when you consider that in the late 60s through the 70s, you arguably had the greatest collection of singer/songwriters in music history. RIP Jim.

His song, Time In a Bottle, was my class song in 1974. He passed in 1973. Too any musicians died young from either drugs or accidents while being transported to and from gigs. He died in a plane crash in Louisiana.

I enjoyed your reactions to Jim Croce's
"Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown". His biggest hit and a song when played would put All ages on the dance floor. Was lucky to see Jim C. live spring '73 as opening act for Loggins and Messina. Great show, Croce was accompanied by another acoustic musician and played a very entertaining dozen songs. R.I.P.

I grew up on Chicago's South Side and lived there all my life including when this song came out. The baddest side of time reputation made us laugh because we knew the reputation was not deserved. The west side actually had the bad reputation for us but I wonder if that was also a myth. Since I've grown up and lived in other places, I've learned that whichever side of town has large pockets of poverty (and majority people of color) will get a bad reputation while where wealthier folks (of whatever color) live will be considered "nice" to outsiders. And FYI, the "east side" of Chicago is Lake Michigan. We lived walking distance from Lake Michigan.

Cabrini-Green has had a reputation for decades, i am the 6th generation of my family to come from Chicago, I remember in the early 1970s people saying that the Cops won't even go in there... and my friends would say - if you're ever driving thru there, don't stop at the stop signs - implying that in the time it would take you to stop - they would already have stripped your cars wheels - true story, I went home on leave from the Military, flew in around 1:30am, just wanted to get home and hit the rack, driving along - there was a car on the side of the road, I remember thinking "damn, I wouldn't have left that there" by the end of the next block i realized that I know that car, my friends '69 Chevelle, so on the next corner i turned and went around the back way, back to the car, pulled out a block behind the Chevelle and there was a Van pulling away from the front of the car - with stop signs and all on the back way around, it probably took 4 to 5 minutes for me to get back to it, I pulled up behind it to confirm it was my friends car, it was - but now was sitting on blocks, they took the wheels - engine and trans - certain interior parts and the sound system... I thought back to when i was younger and remembered hearing about a Van with a 5 or 6 man crew that could strip a car complete in about 4 minutes, what a crazy time.

I went to the Southside of Chicago all the time in the late 90s/early 2000s all the time for buying things in bulk. I am white and from Southwest Wisconsin. Never had an issue walking anywhere there. Everyone I met was nice and liked me, though at first they all thought I was either legitimately crazy, or a cop. Same deal with Milwaukee. I could walk in areas the locals couldn't. I even brokered a truce between two blocks. I was known as "Longhair", and now everyone I knew personally from both cities are either dead or in prison. Crazy. Guess that is my white privilege. 😂😂😂😂

Great tune! Love Chicago! Don't listen to all the bad one-sided press! This song was inspired by a guy Jim knew who went AWOL (UA) from the military for many days, and then returned expecting nothing to happen. Jim was the master storyteller and song writer. Sounds like Doris returned Leroy's advances and caused the whole problem. Seen that before.
