Engelbert is one of the great crooners with such a smooth relaxing voice. His career has spanned almost 7 decades. His first hit song was "Release Me" in 1967. He has had many great songs including ""Love Me With All Your Heart", The Last Waltz", "There Goes My Everything", "Am I That Easy To Forget?", "After The Lovin'", "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize", "Winter World Of Love", "This Moment In Time", "Love Will Set You Free", "Quando, Quando, Quando" etc.
I saw Ray Price in concert. He was about to sing this song, and he said, “This next song is so old that when people ask me when it came out, I tell them I recorded it in the year of BH. That means Before Humperdinck”
Englebert always had such a smooth, soothing voice. The song is actually a cover of a song first released in 1949. Also, Engelbert's real name is Arnold Dorsey. He adopted his stage name / borrowed from a famous German composer. Thanks for reacting. I'd recommend you react to his "After the Lovin'" It's a beautiful song and you'll like the story/lyrics a lot better.
BRITT: A little trivia: In 1976, when Engelbert was performing at the Sahara, Tahoe, I got off work every night at the same time as Englebert would exit the building to be picked up by his limo. EVERY night, even though the temperatures were in the 20s, there would be 5-20 women in their skin-revealing lingerie with no coats, risking frostbite, waiting at his limo with their autograph booklets waiting to ask him for his autograph - probably with hopes he might pick them up as he was a sex symbol somewhat like Elvis. EVERY night.
This was an old country song from the fifties recorded by both Ray Price and Kitty Wells. Esther Phillips did an R and B version and Dean Martin a crooner version in 1966, a year before Englebert's break through hit (it spent over a year in the UK top fifty!!). Gordon Mills, his manager, had had success with Tom Jones recording another country song 'The Green Green Grass of Home.' Englebert, real name Arnold Dorsey, was half Welsh and half Anglo Indian. His manager Gordon Mills had an almost identical background. They looked like brothers. And of course Tom Jones is 100% Welsh.
Born in India to a Brit soldier 1936 - brought up in Leicester, England, as one of 10 kids. Was pretty big at one stage. Gerry Dorsey - met his manager in Spain 97. Love your reaction Britt ❤👍🏽👍☘️
I have to tell you - I am 62 and I remember when Englebert was big - around the same time as Tom Jones - my mother thought Tom was crass and Englebert had class - she is British so not sure what that was all about but for many years I would take her to see EH when he came to town (I was secretly team Tom BTW), lol
Hey Britt. You seemed clearly not to recognize the name Engelbert Humperdink. Actually, the guy doing the crooning was named Arnold Dorsey. The original Engelbert Humperdink was the renowned German composer who authored the opera Hansel and Gretel. Dorsey adopted (stole) Humperdink's name as his stage name and became a huge international star under that name. The country song Release Me has been recorded by many artists over the years, but it was Humperdink's version that catapulted him to fame.
I loved Mac Davis! My father was friends with him, and he always visited when he was in Wichita. He wrote “In the Ghetto”. Phenomenal songwriter, singer, and performer.
@@Craig-l5v I just introduced my husband to that song a few months ago! He laughed so hard he had tears in his eyes. Truthfully, Mac really was “one hell of a man”. I have 8 siblings, and my youngest brother is named Scott from “Watching Scotty Grow”. Like I said before, my Dad was friends with Mac for years.
Engelbert was a favorite of my grandmother (God rest her), referring to him as "my little Humpy!" It's pronounced "hump-ur-dink", and he took the name of a 19th century German composer, most famous for composing the music for Hansel and Gretel. This singer's birth name is Arnold Dorsey, but performs professionally under his stage name.
My dad used to play the organ and sing this to my mom. Yeah, they got divorced. I was madly in love with Engelbert Humperdinck, when I was a kid. He has a great voice and good looking.
'Gerry Dorsey was a crioner in the late 50's and reinvented himself as 'Englebert Humperdink' (who actually was a classical German composer) and had a stroing of hits through the '60's and was a real heaththrob with Mum's - even had his own prime time Saturday night show for a couple of seasons. 'Les Bicyclettes de belsize' was a great track.
Amazing to think how this song dominated The Beatles star power in 1967. The Beatles first UK No. 1 is either “Please Please Me,” (released January 1963) or “Love Me Do,” (released May 1963) depending on what chart list you believe is correct. “Please Please Me” only registered as a No. 1 on two of the three major UK single charts (New Musical Express and Melody Maker) but not on the third (Record Retailer Chart, where it reached No. 2). So The Beatles had a consecutive run of 11 (or 12) No. 1’s from 1963 to 1967, before their next single, the double A side “Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane,” entered the chart no higher than No. 2, and was kept off the No. 1 spot by the release of “Please Release Me,” which stayed at No. 1 for six weeks between March and April 1967. The Beatles next single after that double A side, “All You Need is Love,” (July 1967) was their next No. 1 single and a further 5 No. 1 singles followed before the band broke up in 1970. Such a shame that The Beatles could have had a consecutive run of 17 (or 18) No. 1 UK singles, but was prevented from achieving this by this crooning non pop song record!
This was my mother's favorite song. Looking back, she and my dad didn't have a happy marriage. But it was probably just that she loved his voice. Even when I was little I thought this song was cruel.
"Honey, I've just replaced you..." Awesome! I feel like Elvis might have done this song as well. Dean Martin too - you should do some Dean Martin reactions, he's funny and a great entertainer!
You've got to remember back in them days when you're married, one can not move forward and marry another whilst still married. Hence please release me let me go, having children out of wedlock was frowned upon for a woman, so the new love would not possible want him until she released him from their wedding vows/ Contract,"in other words get a divorce"
Britt. Hump - er - dink. Crooners sang lovesongs jut for the PDC. He was in your club before you founded it. AFTER THE LOVIN is his most popular song. SPANISH EYES and A MAN WITHOUT LOVE are romantic, too.
I am sure many women have sang this song, too, because it cuts both ways. Lots of guys can't let go after it's over. Although in our case normally it's with a slap and not a soft song.
He had his own style if singing....PDC. On another note check out Darryl's live from his house video with Ceelo Green singing I can't go for that you'll love it!
Aye, Britt, tis savage. But when the embers have gone cold, time to let go. And speaking of savagery, you should listen to the Eurhythmics song "Savage" from the album of the same name. The performance of that song at Montreux in 1988 (on YT) is top shelf.
Pronounced just as it's spelt, Hump er dink. It's his stage name, he got it from a composer which IIRC was German so it may be pronounced differently in German.
if you give a thumbs down to Engelbert, hell bound is next. My mom listened to him all the time, i made fun of him constantly. I never new what he was singing about. Adult, damn.
Suggestion for your reaction. Go way back, early 60's to a group called "The Casinos" and a song named " Then you can tell me goodbye" this is before song videos, you may not even find a t.V. clip of it, but you can find the recordings of it. Please...Please.. very old school ....... hope you like it ........ luv your reactions .................
Engelbert is 88 year by now. I do not think he never needed to be released as he married Patricia in 1964 and they stayed together until she died in 2021.
He was very popular back in the day especially with the Ladies , real Name Gerry Dorsey which I think is better than Engelbert Humperdinck by the way, bit of a good natured rivalry with Tom Jones in that era .
You could put Engelburt on a similar stratosphere as Tom Jones/John Rowles etc in the sixties and seventies. A real heart throb crooner with a great voice. Worldwide he had so many hits. Here in New Zealand he toured regularly in those times giving great performances and displaying a good sense of fun. He was responsible for our adopting one of his songs as our "party national anthem"- 10 guitars - all that was required a simple strumming guitar and well lubricated voices. This clip shows how we Kiwi's took Engelburt to our hearts th-cam.com/video/vQ2vxSdeFkM/w-d-xo.html
One of the best voices in the business. I'm more of a metal or hard rock fan but I love this guys voice.

Engelbert Humperdinck is a Legend has a great voice Alot of great songs he did
Englebert had a TV show that followed Tom Jones's TV show. He was considered quite a hottie back then. Beautiful voice, and handsome man!
I saw Ray Price in concert. He was about to sing this song, and he said, “This next song is so old that when people ask me when it came out, I tell them I recorded it in the year of BH. That means Before Humperdinck”

A great cover by Eddie Arnold , my mom's favorite in the 60's.
My grandfather's favorite song and singer. And he was in his mid-60s when this came out.
Apparantly Britt you've been there.
Born in India to a Brit soldier 1936 - brought up in Leicester, England, as one of 10 kids. Was pretty big at one stage. Gerry Dorsey - met his manager in Spain 97.
Love your reaction Britt ❤👍🏽👍☘️
A big hit for Engelbert in 1967 pop & country.
Went to MANY of his concerts. He was referred to as the most romantic singing star! Still touring in his 80’s.
Longtime classic song -- way back to Kitty Wells, Patty Page and Ray Price in the early 50s. This version one of my mom's favorites.
Note that two of the original artists are women. So it's not just a "man" being a heel.
That man has tripped my trigger since the 70’s. Tall, handsome, voice like a warm summer breeze. None better
Check out "A Man without Love" one of his best vocal performances.

@brittreacts Thank you for reply. Enjoy it
Check out his After the Lovin
I agree very popular song the year after I graduated from High School, everyone loved it! I know Britt would LOVE that one for sure!
"A Man Without Love" is another fantastic song too
More Humpers please, there are many, any will do, but "After The Lovin' " is a favourite.
country songs are savagery and truthful !

Definitely pdc material! The man has a beautiful voice! You should listen to Les Bicyclettes de Belsize. You won't be disappointed!!

Great to see you do reactions again ! Love your new look the hair is on point please do more Elvis !😊😊❤
Need to check out Mac Davis - "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me".
Oh, I love Mac Davis, and that song! Definitely worth reacting to.
I loved Mac Davis! My father was friends with him, and he always visited when he was in Wichita. He wrote “In the Ghetto”. Phenomenal songwriter, singer, and performer.
How about Mac Davis’ Lord It’s Hard to be Humble? It’s my joke theme-song.

'Please release my auntie Flo, you know she never took the dough!'
I miss you reacting to Elvis.
Hugs from Brazil to youuuu
Now, you should see Elvis’ live version of this song.

It is amazing that Englebert is still touring and performing in his mid 80s and his voice is still strong just like Tom Jones.
All time classic
My sister named her 4 gold fish Ingle, Burt, Humper and Dink. 😂

This man is a ledgen this came out in 1967,I was 6 when is came out,I seen him live in Vegas ❤
There was a little flood of these deep male voices in the 60s, Tom Jones, John Rowles and good old wild P J Proby, not to mention the Walker Brothers.
This was my mother's favorite song. Looking back, she and my dad didn't have a happy marriage. But it was probably just that she loved his voice. Even when I was little I thought this song was cruel.
My mom’s favorite singer ❤
I’ve seen him 5 times lol. Did a meet and greet too
Love your reaction!! I knew you were in for a surprise 😉
"Honey, I've just replaced you..." Awesome! I feel like Elvis might have done this song as well. Dean Martin too - you should do some Dean Martin reactions, he's funny and a great entertainer!
You should watch him LIVE singing "after the lovin" Look for the performance when he was around 50 wearing a white suit in Las Vegas
OMG...my mom loved this song and I never really listened to the words. LOL

Finally you listen to Engelbert! He is the King of Romance. Women used to throw their panties onstage. He should definitely be in the PDC.
A song of its time, when getting a divorce wasn't that simple.

He always chased Sir Tom Jones. The song was mocked " Please Re Grease Me".

He’s still around although he may have retired from touring recently.
He was very popular back in the day especially with the Ladies , real Name Gerry Dorsey which I think is better than Engelbert Humperdinck by the way, bit of a good natured rivalry with Tom Jones in that era .
HUMP-ur-dink. Great singer and composer. Yes he is considered a crooner
