As an aging Vet, WILT was still in top form, as a retired LEGEND, Owners were still BEGGING WILT to come back to the NBA & play. Championships require great Teammates and Teams. That 1966-1967 Championship 76ers Team was LEGENDARY!!! That Lakers Team that WILT won with, would give teams today a hard way to go!!! WILT didn't always have the best Teams, or Teammate's however; WILT CHAMBERLAIN was ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PLAYER in his time in the NBA!!! Wilt could run a 4.6 40 yd and beat Jim Brown twice in a foot race. Wilt could bench 500 lbs. He played nearly 48 min a game for his entire career. He could hit a fadeaway jumper with regularity. He is the only center to lead the league in assists. Nearly half his competition in the 60s were HOF centers, (Reed, Bellamy, Russell, Thurmond), so he didn't play against slow white guys, by and large. @@scottflipiak614 I don't worry about today's stat hounds. I used to read Sports Illustrated back in the 1980's. And other articles outside of the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. From 1984-to-1986, many sports writers, coaches, and players considered Larry Bird the best basketball player in the game. It was close when considering other players. But I remembered the Boston Celtics led by Bird averaging 60 wins a season during the 1980's.
I'm not against stats and the amount of championship rings, but sometimes quantity becomes a bit overrated. The fact that the Celtics reached the Finals five times explains enough of Larry Bird's greatness. Today's modern basketball fans don't also realize how great Julius "Dr. J" Erving was. I laugh a bit when comparisons are made on which players are better than the others. Today's fans will make comparisons wider while comparisons of greats are very small and marginal. The late 1970's & 1980's NBA era was arguably the greatest influx of talent the NBA ever had when great players from the ABA merged into the NBA with the addition of players from the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird era joining the league too after their legendary college careers.

In 1969 when he got hurt and the whole thing with Breda Kolf. 1970 when Willis got hurt. Wilt got all the blame not Jerry West. Wilt even wrote it in his book. Another point based of Wilt sports Century is that he was too nice a man. Never had to deal with racism the way Bill Russell did. Wilt could of broke peoples arms but would've been considered an evil giant back in those times. Wilt chose to play a finesse game instead of a power one. Where he shot a lot of turnaround jumpers. Bob cousy said if Wilt had 1 third of the intensity Bill Russell had he'd be more awesome than he was. Another man in sports Century said "I always felt he was in slow motion, I always thought he could do more.".. In battle of giants 1971 Kareem vs Wilt, Wilt made a speech in the huddle. Billy Cunningham said that was the only inspirational speech Wilt ever gave. Which tells me Wilt wasn't much of a vocal leader... Phil Jackson said Wilt wasn't a post Sprinter,, he'd wait for the guards to come to him on a rebound. John Havlicek say Wilt cared so much about his not fouling out record that he wouldn't go for blocks in the fourth quarter of close games...Red Aurabach said Wilt only cared about Wilt and that he was in love with his stats. ..Kareem wrote the Chumperlain letter. Jerry West had Kareem #1 even though he played with Wilt. So there is a lot of negative things.

Wilt Chamberlain was a freak of nature, he was strong, flexible, he had endurance and was explosive. His athleticism was outrageous for a man his size. And as stated in this video there's still rules of the game that were made because of Wilt, the biggest one IMO is the man to man defense or basically no zone defense because teams would put 2 or 3 guys on Wilt to defend him and he still put up an outrageous stat sheet.

Agree 100%, the GOAT. That said, Abdul-Jabbar, a friend of Wilt prior to the NBA (his mentor), said that Wilt was lifting so much weight during his final years, and was so focused on his physical strength, that he lost a bunch of flexibility, and possibly contributed to knee problems, etc, etc. That was he said. I saw a clip of Wilt at Kansas breaking a high jump record informally when he walked onto the UK track team. He was wearing his winter coat at the time, I think. Peace.

As another commentor said, Wilt could do everything but win championships. Wilt & Russell played when the league had fewer teams, the players were much shorter than Wilt & Russell, and the era was weak like this era. Therefore, inflated stats like 100 points in a game or average 55 rebounds in a season. Kind of when they changed the rules around the time Kobe scored 81 points and just recently when Harden had a triple double which included 60 points.
No wonder LeBron flourishes in this soft era of basketball where defense is not preeminent. A few weeks ago, they said Durant was the greatest scorerer of all-time when an average Celtics defense shut him down. Yet, many commentators have said Durant would have been a force when Jordan played. Yeah right!?

You'd really have to be of an older generation like myself to truly grasp this, but people generally didn't have the admiration for extremely tall people in Chamberlain's day. They were considered freaks (in the bad sense) by far more people than today. And pro ball players didn't make the crazy sums they make today. Then Jabbar came along and gave a sense of giants going up against each other that made for intrigue, and as such people with extreme height found that there was good money to be made playing pro ball, and scouts found they had more to choose from. That changed public perception.

He was the total package of both Offense and Defense. He could Score, Defend, Rebound, Pass and Block Shots. Apart from rule changes, idk if a lot of fans know how the NBA was regulated in the 60s and 70s. In those days, you couldn't dip your shoulder to move your defender as he had a right to his position also. Those were called offensive fouls then (which is even more amazing for Wilt as he didn't foul out in his entire career) as the league had to allow for some parity w/ the dominant bigs of that day with the smaller perimeter players.
For one reason or another, the league eventually began to allow for big men to jostle down low and bump their shoulders into the defenders' chests (maybe as a way to create more scoring in the 70s as that was considered arguably the worst decade in NBA history). This is why Wilt was talking about how he'd score 40-50 PPG if he played in the late 90s when comparing himself to Shaq.

In sports i dont think you can define a GOAT for the entirety of the history of a league.Different eras had to go through certain obstacles. When I was a kid growing up... Numbers and Stats defined who was great....Wilt's unreachable numbers made him without a doubt the GOAT, the same like Babe Ruth's 714( prior to Aaron) HRs, Ted Williams .403 batting average, Joe Ds 56 game hitting streak etc.Later it became about titles and rings.Ive heard enough unbelievable stories about Wilt from credible sources.I followed MJ since Day 1 because we both graduated HS in 1981 and I first became aware of him in 1980.MJ has some type of magic aura over ppl.As great as he is its just something about him.. I dont know if its the dark skin ( like me), the shaved head, the suits he used to wear, the style with which he played or just his overall look, but Im sure that has something to do with it, in addition to his great basketball accomplishments.Despite the eras generational players would've succeeded in ANY era.Players like Wilt, MJ, Kareem, Oscar, LeBron, Bird, Magic, Baylor, West, Curry and many others would have made their mark regardless because these players not only possessed talent but they also are mentally tough to endure any type of obstacle presented to them on and off the court. In short while growing up in the 70s and 80s I always had Wilt as my GOAT because of the sheer numbers, his longevity for greatness and the way he FORCED the league to change the rules because of his dominance, but in the end the GOAT to me is Kareem because EVERYWHERE he went they won.His longevity ( since he was 14 he was regarded the NEXT ONE) and his unstoppable, unduplicated sky hook which he probably used to score half of his 31,000+ points.I consider MJ the 5th greatest overall player of all time, but the 2nd greatest pro.Oscar and Lebron along with Wilt and Kareem have to get props for longevity. All 4 dominated in HS with a bullseye on their backs and more than lived up to all the expectations which is hard to do.

Oh yes. Palming, carrying, cradling, suspending the basketball in your hand became acceptable in Jordan's era - actions which had been violations (walking, traveling, carrying the basketball, in cross-overs and in dribbling in general) in basketball at all levels until this new Era.
Basketball fundamentally changed with the advent and acceptance of relaxed, formerly prohibited dribbling practices. Players could now carry the basketball as they made a crossover or spin move or just in dribbling to set up their shot - James Harden is one of the most extreme exploiters of the modern relaxation of dribbling rules - he actually often literally moves his dribbling hand from under the ball, to over the ball, again and again.

My favorite era was with the Larry Bird Celtics vs the Showtime Lakers. Other teams/players were interesting but MJ brought in a huge change alright, but it was not necessarily an improvement. Players got more interested in highlight reels than championships--they wanted fame but got it by offcourt crime, tattoos, books, (Dennis Rodman) Thirty years ago many players were heroic, but now many players might be in prison if not for the NBA.

MJ used his athleticism to dominate other teams and players as he should. Larry and Magic weren't athletic so they played under the basket. Talents play to their strengths and MJ dominated his era with his as others did the same. I think MJ era had more talent at every position and there were team who played through bigs and guards not just bigs like Wilts era.

Without a doubt in my mind, Jordan is the greatest that I've ever seen. Offensively, defensively, athletically. At 7'1 in the 50s and 60s, Wilt should have been able to put up extraordinary numbers like he did. Jordan at 6'6 should not have been able to dominate like he did. I don't count championships, because that's more of a team accomplishment. If you put Wilt in the 80's and Jordan in the 50's, Jordan's number would be insane where Wilt might be a top 5 big man.

Granted, athletes of the past were more dedicated and harder working, but dominating the game is harder today than in Wilt's time. Speaking of dedication and hard work, notice how many of the greatest players in the NBA today were born and mostly raised outside of the USA?????

The rules have been relaxed to the point of absurdity. Palming, carrying, traveling is rampant. More players are coming from other countries for marketing reasons, in order to expand the brand. 100 guys made the league back then. Now you have 4 to 500 hundred "NBA-level" players. There are 30 starting centers in the league. Of the best, who's gonna stop Wilt? Gobert, Embiid, Jokic? lol How about the other 27 guys. Wilt would sh^t all over the centers playing today. The Greatest of All Time is always subjective. People tend to gravitate to the player that they watched as a kid. For me Kareem was the best, he was the most dominant player of the 70s and early 80s when I grew up, for the Generation X it is Michael Jordan and for the Millennials it is LeBron James. But one thing is certain, all 3 were great players, and Wilt Chamberlain was a great player too. Who knows, some kid who is 12 years old watching Steph Curry is going to probably say that Steph Curry is the best player. The debate is going to go on from generation to generation.

I saw this article and thought a previous post of mine had some merit here. The subject was slightly different, but the message is the same. "People's love or hate for certain players, for whatever reason, clouds their common sense. Every star player in any team sport cannot do it alone. That goes for the top NBA stars as well. Bill Russell only scored 16 points per game for his career. Who did the scoring? Chamberlain with hall of famers, including Gerry West, only won 2 championships. An aging Kareem managed 6 championships, but 5 with the greatest point guard ever (Magic), James Worthy, Michael Cooper and others. Kobe had Shaq his first 3. Shaq was probably the main reason they won those 3. However, his last 2 were mainly due to himself. Bird was great but had 4 hall of famers with him. Lebron had to recruit other good players and leave teams to win all of his. Jordan carried his team for his first years playing and finally won 3 in a row with only 1 other hall of famer. His last 3 had himself, Pippen, Rodman, Kukoc and Parish. Kukoc did not have great stats, Rodman was only there for D and rebounds, and Parish was there in name only. Jordan did it with less help!!!!!! In the 2 years Jordan left, the Bulls had their worst 2 victory years of the 8, including a 47 win season. Other than the 2 seasons when Jordan was away, Pippen never scored above 18 points without Jordan. Even during those 2 years when Jordan was away and Pippen was the go-to guy, his high was 22 points. Jordan made Pippen. It's time to shut it down haters, given the choice, you would be a losing fool to build around anybody else but the clear cut goat. BTW I don't really like Jordan."
