Dwayne 'Pearl' Washington Highlights - Syracuse University Basketball

  • In 1983, Dwayne 'Pearl' Washington (Brooklyn, NY) was the number one ranked high school basketball recruit in the country, the Most Valuable Player in the McDonald's High School All-American game, and a New York City playground hoops legend. In his senior year at Brooklyn Boys & Girls High School, he averaged 35 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists per game.
Pearl's decision to attend Syracuse University brought the school's basketball program (along with their Carrier Dome home court and the fledgling Big East Conference) unprecedented national media coverage and legitimacy. Washington played three seasons in Syracuse, garnering first-team All-Big East honors each year and second-team All-American nods in 1985 (AP) and 1986 (UPI).
Best known for electrifying crowds with his mastery of the crossover dribble and 'shake and bake' scoring moves, Washington was also the quintessential point guard, excelling in both the half-court and transition offense. He averaged nearly 7 assists over his career, and established an SU single-game record with 18 assists in a 82-81 road win at Alumni Hall against Chris Mullin and St. John's in 1984.
Washington's ball-handling skills made him a one-man full-court press breaker, and his penchant for late-game heroics (SU was 6-1 in games decided by 1 point during Pearl's tenure) cemented his legacy as one of college basketball's all-time greats. His last-second half court game-winning heave in the Dome against Boston College in 1984 stands as one of the great buzzer-beaters in NCAA hoops history.
In 1996, Pearl's uniform (#31) was retired by SU. Washington eventually returned to Syracuse University to complete his studies, and graduated in 1999. Pearl was named to the Syracuse University All Century Team in 2000; in 2004, he earned a spot on the Big East Conference's 25th Anniversary First Team.
Many thanks to www.orangehoops.org for biographical and statistical information.

The "Pearl"!! Man, let me tell you growing up during the 80's we were all drawn to the magnetism of the G'Town. Especially if you were from the hood' They looked like you played and fought like you. With a big black coach to back it up and condone it! Straight Intimidation! Hoya Paranoia. But, Man, It was one man who didn't give and good god damn about G'Town,Ewing, Hoya Paranoia none of that! Peal use to come in and give us the business! Each and every time! Pearl was the real Damn Deal!

Pearl was one of the college basketball icons from my childhood. I used to imitate his fadeaway from the left elbow. What a great ballhandler, and a guy who looked like he genuinely enjoyed playing the game. RIP

he was the truth, real deal hood fundementals that was basketball. a lot of these new cat's don't know how how to play hard and smart, and just let the rest flow. if you ever had game yourself, then you know some of your coldest moves ever came unexpectedly just in the flow. God bless you pearl, now they got a handle in heaven.

Gotta say, I tuned into ESPN Big Monday cuz of the Pearl. Man, that dude could ball and there was no half-steppin with Pearl. It's like you were always on the edge of your seat cuz you didn't know what he'd show out with next. Pearl owned the paint for a guard cuz he was always fakin, crossin you over anywhere from 25 ft to in the lane. Pearl was soooo good so young. Probably my favorite college guard ever...maybe not the best ever but the most fun to watch ever. Pearl bright a lot of joy to bball fans everywhere! RIP Dwayne, your game will last forever.

Those last 2 highlights were superb. I remember the half-court game-winner, but the bank shot off the glass after 2 between-the-legs and one behind-the-back dribble is amazing also!

"remember the originator" 2:11 - Pearl with the IN&OUT, he was ahead of his time.
It went Pistol Pete to Pearl to Tim Hardaway to Iverson to Jwill to Crawford/Kyrie/Curry/Cp3. Amazing how the crossover evolved.

Pearl had some mean handles... Possessed one of the greatest crossovers ever and was very influential regarding all of that, especially with the league building into an era of "looser" dribbling - mostly unwritten - rules. RIP

RIP, Pearl. You took me to SU college hoops heaven twice: 1. I was lucky enough to be at the BC game for your buzzer beater. 2. Your 1984 Big East Final at MSG against GTown was the best individual performance I ever saw in person. Your relentless and fearless drives into the teeth of an awesome GTown defense were a thing of beauty and you willed SU to take GTown to OT. Your stat line of 27 pts, 6 assists and 3 steals doesn't quite capture how magical you were that night. Thanks for the memories. - '84 SU Grad
