The thing with Michael is he didn't have to give himself his own nicknames. His opponents, who feared him, called him nicknames like The Black Cat or Black Jesus. And stuff like Air Jordan or His Airness came about because of the Nike marketing and such I think.

Interviews and press conferences are key aspects of Boxing, and Ali gave a spectacle outside the ring many many times. Michael was just one heck of a professional with the microphone, he knew how to elevate the game and the income for everyone else, because if everybody got paid more, he would get paid even more, and he didn't like to be antagonized by his words, but his play on the court.

He wasn't just talking smack just to talk smack, he was selling the fight and drawing interest that would lead to a bigger potential payday. A little bit different than a guy telling some reporter in an interview "that made me the greatest". A boxer talking smack and proclaiming himself the greatest is something I'd expect. There is a difference. Ali was a fan of wrestling and liked the promotional aspect of it and applied it to himself and boxing. And it worked. The constant whataboutism really needs to stop on the internet. It's destroying rational debate.

As an aside to the point of his quote-- there is a video where he talks about his hands and how they're like his paint brushes (not sure how accurate my description is but it was something to that effect). It was cool to see the way he also views the beauty of basketball and there was even a video on youtube that I came across several years back that highlighted the way he moves through the air and his ball control. I think it was titled something like the elegance of MJ. Reeeeeallly wish I could that video. Jordan really highlighted a lot of beauty of the game in SO many ways.👏

the level of maturity MJ displayed in this interview is amazing! ..it's insane to hear how he was put on the spot about this memorable moment, and then he didn't shy away from his response...MJ ranked his most memorable accomplishments in a way that is unheard of, especially hearing him say that winning #70 was at the bottom of his list...MJ displayed an enormous amount of humility....these are the intangibles that unfortunately LeBron still hasn't mastered after 20+ seasons...

as I counted, 70 wins was 8th on MJ's top 10 achievement list and had the draft day as 7th (the only "personal" achievement he inserted). But now, I'm pretty sure 70 wins will be bumped out because rings #4 #5 #6 will occupy the whole top 10. those achievement were all team achievements, not personal already.
There are so many takeaways from this video. One thing that consistently goes over too many people's head is how articulate MJ is. Some of the AAU bread NBA players who talk like they sign their name in crayola. They're juvenile. There are so many interviews MJ's done and he put that education from NC to great use by demonstrating how to be a great communicator in front of a crowd. Now, to be specific about this interview is how MJ never makes it about him and the focus is always about the reason why you suit up in the NBA - the Finals. Winning the finals. Nothing else matters but winning the finals. Everything else is auxiliary.
I think a lot of guys go out of their way speak as if theyre uneducated because they feel like its cooler to that.
All the accomplishments he mentioned as most important were team accomplishments. He has always been a team player despite what some people say. Great interview, shows respect to teammates and the competition, present and past. True GOAT.

I remember Bulls sports gear that was sold in Chicago that spring '96 with the printed words: "Don't mean a thing without the ring." Didn't see it again after the summer.
One thing I just realized is that Jordan played with two HOFers on that team who are best known for their defensive prowess. As you see a lot of these superteams, they are based on scorers and not defense.
Which is probably why most of those Super Teams fail.

As a big Bulls fan all the way back to 1987, I feel the thing that stung the most about the Warriors' breaking their record was that the Bulls' last three losses were each by 1 point. A little more luck and they put the single-season win record out of reach.
It don't mean a thing without the ring. I'm sure the 2016 Warriors would exchange their 73-9 record for the championship that year.
Their record doesn't count. The purpose of the regular season is for the playoffs. They shot their wad in the regular season and went to two seven game series.
IIRC most of their losses were when MJ had a sub-par game (for him) and no-one else stepped up.

Just the way Jordan conducted himself during the entire interview was class act. He didn't give the media attitude saying next question like some of these current players like to do Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving come to mind. Even in a loss he would discuss the things they did wrong and how he felt they could fix those in the following game. You can be competitive and still have class and respect. Somewhere along the way. Jordan was one of the few or the only player of my era in the NBA to this day that could compartmentalize his season achievements without losing focus of the one thing he obsessed over which was to win a championship the only other two guys but in different sport's where Derek Jeter which was great but I couldn't stand because he was Yankee😂😂 and another guy I couldn't stand either 😂😂but admired of course Tom Brady.
