The story of "The Butterfly Lovers" is a lot like the story of "Romeo and Juliet." It is a story about love, passion, devotion, desperation and transformation. Both stories have tragic endings, yet so beautiful, so romantic, and timeless. Liang Shan-bo and Zhu Ying-tai, these two lovers could not be together when they were alive. The circumstances kept them from being a couple. Therefore, they chose death. Both of them turned into butterflies. The butterfly lovers finally escaped from the rules of human society and thus were free to love and to be with each other forever and ever.
This video captures a live performance by me. Filmed in Los Angeles on a beautiful spring day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

It is not hard to start learning, but once you advance, it gets complicated, so it definetly requires persistence and practice. The travel sized gu zheng is usually shorter and narrower than the standard size, and the sound is not very good. The difference between basic, intermediate and professional gu zheng is the quality. They function the same as well as the number of strings.

I ordered one on Amazon, about $350 for a student grade, but a nice instrument. A lot of people will tell you that instruction is necessary, certainly something to think about you don't need it. Take it from someone who is self- taught on many instruments and does it for a living despite all the sage advice flung in my direction.
If you want to be as good as BeiBei, definitely get some lessons, damn!

as you can see there are butterflies flying around her playing the music and what more amazing is that this piece of music is telling a story of a man and a woman, who cannot be together because their family hate each other, so at last they commit suiside together and then they become butterflies and fly together away. it's really a touching story.

Uhh....no? Their families don't hate each other, and they don't commit suicide together. Read More for the ACTUAL story. I'll also be posting it separately so that people can see the real story for themselves without expanding this comment section.
Once upon a time in China, there lived a young girl who dreamed of learning. She was her family’s ninth child and only daughter. Her elderly father not only raised her with loving kindness, but also taught her how to read and write. In addition to the classics, she studied and admired great women of China’s past. Unfortunately she lived at a time when girls were expected to stay at home, marry the man that their father chose for them, and be obedient and quiet. This young girl was called Zhu Ying Tai, and she yearned to be different. Ying Tai pestered her father to allow her to attend school. Eventually he agreed as long she could find a school to accept her, confident that no school would accept a woman. She was resourceful however, and dressed up as a young man in order to be accepted to a school in the city of Hangzhou.
While she was there, she met a handsome young scholar from Kuaij named Liang Shan Bo. They became best friends and spent most of their time together, sharing a love of learning and enjoying each other's company. They gathered some soil as incense and took an oath of fraternity in the pavilion of a wooden bridge. They composed poems and couplets, and debated history and philosophy. Three years went by, and Ying Tai fell in love with Shan Bo, but he never for a moment suspected that Ying Tai was in fact a beautiful young woman, and one who had fallen in love with him. She tried many times to show her affection, but Shan Bo misunderstood every time.
Finally, it was time for Ying Tai to leave the academy. Her father had become ill and she was needed at home. Before her departure, Ying Tai reveals her true identity to the headmaster's wife and asks her to pass a jade pendant to Shan Bo as a betrothal gift. Shan Bo walked with Ying Tai for 5 and a half miles of her journey. The silent walk was heavy with the pain of separation. As they neared a stream, Ying Tai noticed a pair of mandarin ducks together on the water, and threw a branch at them. Watching the startled birds fly off in different directions, Ying Tai broke the silence.
“My elder brother, when we part today, who knows when we shall meet again? We are just like these ducks, who separate in flight.”
“Esteemed little brother,” Shan Bo said, “even if we are brothers about to part ways, how can you compare us to husband and wife?”
To the Chinese, a pair of mandarin ducks represents the love between man and woman, and even this final hint had failed to reach his senses. All Ying Tai could do was beg Shan Bo to visit her someday. The moment of departure finally came; in tears they bade each other farewell.
Finally, she came up with a clever plan. She told Shan Bo that she had a pretty younger sister of 16 who was sure to please him and make him happy. She suggested that Shan Bo visit the family to meet, and possibly marry, the younger sister. He agreed eagerly. Ying Tai travelled home, happy that soon she would be seeing her friend again.
Upon his return to school, the headmaster's wife greets Shan Bo and, in private, gives him the jade pendant and informs him of Ying Tai's true identity.
A long year passed. Ying Tai almost gave up hope, but one happy day Shan Bo arrived to meet the family. As soon as Shan Bo saw Ying Tai he realised who she was. The couple were happy in each other's love and looked forward to a future together. They make a vow to the effect of "till death do us part" but their happiness was short-lived, and fate was cruel. Ying Tai was celebrated as a rare woman scholar by the people of her hometown. Her father recovered from his illness, and happily informed her of her upcoming marriage to Ma Wen Cai, the gifted and cultured son of a wealthy and powerful provincial governor.
The Chinese hold that marriage is not simply a union of man and wife, but the act of joining two families as one. In this case, the Zhu and Ma families had a history of amiable relations, and both were of high social standing. To cancel the engagement at this time would be unthinkable. Ying Tai pleaded with her father to change his mind, but he would not relent. Poor Shan Bo left, heart-broken and alone. His health gradually deteriorates until he becomes critically ill. He dies in office later as a county magistrate.
Ying Tai was torn. In her heart, she was just as devoted to Shan Bo as he had been to her. As a woman who had given him her love it would be only right to be true to him, but her betrothal to Wen Cai was a family matter and one could not simply live according to the whims of personal sentiment. Through an exchange of letters Ying Tai agreed to the wedding, on the condition that they travelled along the road on which Shan Bo had died and that she be allowed to pray and sacrifice at Shan Bo's grave. Wen Cai recognized Ying Tai as a woman of supreme character. She would not give up her love for the late Shan Bo. Being himself a man of scholarly caliber, Wen Cai would not fault her for it.
As the marriage procession passed Shan Bo’s grave, the weather turned stormy and the winds howled around the wedding procession. Ying Tai sobbed in the rain, wishing that she could join her true love rather than marry Wen Cai. Suddenly, it seemed that her prayers had been answered. A huge bolt of lightning struck the grave and it split open. In a flash, Ying Tai threw herself into the grave, so that she could be with Shan Bo forever.
As suddenly as the lightning had struck, the storm disappeared and the skies cleared. As the two families scrambled to rescue their daughter, the weather suddenly let up. Two large and colorful butterflies, fluttered out of the tomb. In dreamlike splendor the pair danced and weaved higher and higher into the heavens.
It is said that Ma Wen Cai and his father reported the events to the emperor, who then proclaimed Ying Tai to be a woman of extraordinary virtue and had her recorded in official history.
The story of Liang Shan Bo, the young scholar devoted to pure love, and Zhu Ying Tai, the learned woman who followed him to the grave in honor of her promise, is just one expression of the traditional standards to which the ancient people held themselves.

Maybe a few hundred years ago, the land was still beautiful. It is now writhing in pain as the toxic fumes of large industrial waste plants choke it to death. All the Chinese want to do is make enough money to leave their country, and those on the outside are lured in by it's wonderful ancient culture. We do not see what those on the inside do. there is no trace of this old culture in China anymore.

In this case, the Ying Tai and Ma families had a history of amiable relations, and both were of high social standing.
