I didn't realize just how sharp Drouin was that day until watching this again. He was so far over every height until 2.38. Barshim was nursing an injury which was why he was only taking a very short approach. In events where he was jumping 2.42 or 2.43 he used an 8-stride approach, twice as long as he was using here. He still cleared 2.36 with this short run-up but that's not where he would have jumped from his full approach. Perhaps Drouin still could have jumped 2.40 on this day but he didn't have to.
The scene is the final of men's high jump at the Tokyo Olympics. Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi was facing Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim in the final. Both of them jumped 2.37 meters and were on par ! One more attempt was given to two both of them, but Tampberi withdrew from the last attempt due to a serious leg injury. The moment when there was no other opponent in front of Barshim, the moment when he could have easily approached the gold alone ! tamberi was injured just before rio 2016. not during tokyo 2020 final. Barshim decided to comply with Tamberi's demand for a dual gold medal because he had suffered from the same injury of tamberi years before, so he chosed solidarity over competition.
No he is not necessarily implying that tall people can jump high, but the advantage of being tall is that you have higher center of gravity, which would mean that a shorter person would have to use a lot more effort and power to get over the bar.
Being almost an octogenarian I can easily do the Limbo at that height! One cannot help the beautiful movement of those young men as they fly over the bar. To think that the final jumping force comes from one leg, that is really amazing ! Congratulations to all of them.
I just tried to imagine how high would they jump, if i ever see them in real life for example if there would be 7 ft giant in front if us they would still jump above him like it's nothing.
As a freshman my pole vault record was something around 2.5 meters and the first guy’s jump just frickin backflips close to my record... im a sophomore now and my record is closer to 4.5 meters but just to think that a man can jump higher than a person with a pole can..
