SVALBARD Photo Travel | Wildlife photography - Ep.2

  • I'm on a 4-day solo trip to a remote inlet to photograph wildlife and landscapes.
This is the 2nd episode from my 4 weeks photo travel to Svalbard.
For quite a while now I have been planning this 1 month trip to Svalbard, and now finally the time has come. I spent the first week together with my dad, and we had a wonderful time.
Now I am off to a remote fiord to hopefully find some wildlife to photograph. If I'm not lucky with the wildlife the landscapes are incredible beautiful, and it has been a while since I have done any landscape photography.
The biggest challenge is the fact that there are a lot of polar bears in the area and it takes some preparation to stay safe.
    ••• WHO I AM •••
My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer.
I am a Nikon Ambassador and I work as an ILCP photographer.
Nature conservation is very close to my heart.
I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.
Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/ear...
Beside being featured in publications and in my books books my photographs have been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.

Once again a beautiful video, already looking forward to the next one, the preview looked exciting! Such amazing scenery and that seal photo is definitely one for the 2023 calendar 😛 Even though you found it hard to describe, you described exactly how I feel about visiting/seeing old buildings. Looks like your bear alarm got a small upgrade from the last time you visited Svalbard. I would still 100% run into it though 😅

Hi Pica - Always a pleasure to read you comments. Yes old buildings are amazing. Have you seen A Life on this Planet with David Attenborough? The beginning where he is visiting Chernobyl? That is amazing. Yes the alarm got an update and this is much better. I am now building one up from scratch for my next trip. A completely different system with sound only. See you out there...

Nice video, Morten. You put a smile of recognition on my face when you used the buttons to zoom in on what you shot. It took me a while with the Z system until it sank in that the display compares to my smartphone. Two finger pinch zoom. One finger move within the frame. Brief tap to focus on the point tapped and immediately take a shot. Almost a game changer.

When seals are in the water they are difficult to get good pictures. Like you said, they don't keep their head out of the water very long and they can spend up to about 20 minutes under water. They are quite common in Puget Sound in Washington State in the USA. I see seals about 60% of the time usually about 30 meters off shore. I am surprised how many people don't notice them.
I enjoy watching how you set up camp. I was surprised to see you drink from a stream. Around here I am going to filter at least and probably boil.
That is a cute little old shelter you showed us. As always, I enjoy watching your videos.

    • @MortenHilmer
      @MortenHilmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Jeff and thanks for you kind words.
The streams on Svalbard all comes from the glaciers so the water is super clean. Here in Denmark you have to be more carefull because of farming etc.
Yeah these seals are really difficult - luckily they are very curious:)
Take care - see you out there...

Uh. It must be an interesting experience to spend four weeks alone in a place that looks like a desert, except it's moist and cold. I'd like to spend one or two days there, not more.
And I don't like sleeping outside, especially in areas where there is even a slight chance of encountering bears (Slovakia has a lot of them and they don't respect state borders). I either feel I can hear any mouse at 100m and not being able to hear other noises than wind feels even worse.

Love watching your videos with the inspirations as mentioned by many others, and the way you approach your photography with the elements of the environment. I enjoyed watching the full 28 minutes.
I have ordered a copy of your book Silence of the North. I was so happy when a reprint was announced some time ago. I hope to receive my copy soon and enjoy your beautiful photographs and appreciate wildlife of the North at its best.
    Warm greetings from The Netherlands.

What brand of pants are you wearing? Do they keep the water out for the most part?

Hi Morten, we traveled to Svalbard with Hutigruten what a fantastic landscape it is, we saw two Polar Bears on our trip, my wife had a pod of Beluga whales swimming around her Kayak and would love to go back to Longyerben again. Keep up the interesting vlogs.

Such great quality in everything you do. From your photography to these videos. I keep checking your TH-cam channel for new/more episodes like this. They inspire me to want to travel more, and see/visit new and unique places. My wife is not a fan of these videos, simply because when I watch them, I go run up to my wife and tell her "we need to go to Svalbard, or Baffin Island! (she secretly loves these videos!)

I just loved your videos , I can feel the winds , water flowing . I am thankful that you are making these kind of videos that we can enjoy the landscapes from ours home . I just have 2 questions that why you don't carry wide lens ? how u capture those sounds when the camera is 5 feet or 10 feet away from you ? like in this video there was a clip with you are going towards the tent and camera was far away from you its impossible for camera to capture those crisped sound !! than how ? THANK YOU

Breathtakingly good. Excellent editing, and very nice use of sound and cuts, everything just sits! What’s your cam#2? Cheers from Norway!

I can’t imagine just drinking water out of nature! In my country (Belgium) there are no places anymore where you can just fill your bottle from a creek. Which is very unfortunate!

I enjoy your story telling. It is always very relaxing and inspiring to watch your videos. The seal image is stunning. Very minimalistic. The landscape images are beautiful. The little building was interesting and I know what you mean about finding old structures. Great video and looking forward to the next. Take care and “see you out there.”

Watching this video on a Sunday morning in bed with a coffee. This is awesome! I’m going on a backcountry canoe trip next month with my cameras and this video gets me jazzed up…Morten is a hard man, would love to go on a photography expedition with him…but maybe not in polar bear country 😄

Hi Morten! I'm a new subscriber to your channel and must say that I absolutely love your content. The feel of tranquility that you portray is what most landscape photographers aspire to in their forays. Keep it up!
One curiosity... I noticed you drink from streams without boiling or filtering the water first. Isn't that risky?
