I have a complicated relationship with Doomsday Clock. On one level (as a DC fan), I find it to be extremely entertaining and well-written. On another (as a Watchmen fan), I fundamentally despise its existence.

I know how you feel. As someone who deeply respects Alan Moore I despise the whole watchmen “franchise”. The prequels, the movies, the tv show as well Doomsday Clock.
But as a nililhist, I just really don’t care and more surprised it took this long for DC to pull this crap.

I really wish DC would just leave Watchmen alone. It doesn't need sequels or prequels. That being said I appreciate Johns' attempt to provide meta-commentary on how Watchmen has affected the superhero genre. That subplot regarding the conspiracy theory that the government is engineering superheroes may be a response to Alan Moore's last word on the genre in LOEG's final chapter, The Tempest. As I said, I appreciate what John's is trying to do, but I largely agree with your assessment that the final story is underwhelming.

This series could have been much more but Im at the age where im just starting to accept that the nature of the comic industry is self defeating to their story's. So going in I knew this wasnt going to blow my mind or really ask any philosophical questions but it was fun. I wish it had more moments of character interaction that mattered more and the fake super hero idea was taken farther but overall its not bad and just dumb enough that I can enjoy it for what it is.

    • @flow_987
      @flow_987 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Same thoughts. To be honest, I wish DC had left Watchmen alone. It's a different kind of story than mainstream DC, and trying to merge the Watchmen storyline with mainstream DC felt to me like a cringeworthy attempt at imitating the philosophical aspects of the original Watchmen comic.

Dr. Manhatten can only see past, present, and future in existing universes (or at least that's how I took it). He was so inspired by Superman that he decided to purposely splinter the metaverse to save it, thus creating a partellel universe that was undetected by Dr. Manhattan. Is it possible the earth in the metaverse was blown to pieces and the ending of the book was 2nd metaverse? Thats how I took it!

@@Tone_Of_Dials Absolutely. It's arguably the creative and ethical low DC comics. If you care at all about creator's rights It's supremely distasteful for reasons that hour long videos elsewhere on youtube cover. If you care at all about good writing and originality, it's the very opposite of that; instead it is extremely painful to read hacky fan fiction. The whole thing reads like Geoff Johns wishes he was much smarter, much better author than he is. This maxi-series absolutely served as a jumping off point for me, and I imagine I am hardly alone in that. I haven't given DC any money since this garbage was published. Anyone who is a fan of Alan Moore and/or the original maxi-series I am sure shares my opinion.

I loved it. Sorry to be very late to this party, but I waited for the trade.
You're analysis is spot on. I would add that the inclusion of Dr Manhattan's alterations on DCU history, I believe, is a meta-commentary of the negative effect Watchmen had on making comics "darker and more gritty."
For the Alan Moore purists, note Johns lifted the idea of the metauniverse's constantly rebooting timeline from Alan Moore's Supreme series. AM did it better, but GJ did it with Superman.

One suspicious little plot thread is left dangling at the end: Is the "new" Rorschach loose in the DC "metaverse" now? Apparently Veidt was returned to his world at the end, but there was no word if this happened to Rorschach. I'm actually surprised the series wrote off the original Watchmen cast in such a manner that the characters could not continue to interact with the DC universe, as this would almost certainly have been a order given from on high to the authors of this series. However, they were all wrapped up...except for Rorschach. And actually, I found him to be a disappointing character, apparently created especially so this story could have a Rorschach.

He sees the debut of Superman. He sees it again in 1956 whenever the Metaverse is changed into what would become Earth One and the original history became Earth Two. This is probably the fairest critique I’ve seen of the series so far. One thing I will say is that Clock makes an emphasis on one aspect of Watchmen and sort of improves the idea.
Manhattan decides that human lives are miracles, and decides that humanity is worth saving, and I think Doomsday Clock extends this idea by giving Jon a son. The best way to preserve humanity, is to give the next generation the tools to succeed and move forward. I think that’s why Marionette and Mine and New Rorschach are in the story, we mostly see their youths and how they were raised affecting who they are. It’s the reason the Kent’s coming back is so important, parental love is soo important, and the only real way to ensure the safety of the miracle of humanity is to continually do our best for those that are younger than we are.
Everything else I mostly agree with, Comedian I will say is there because he’s Watchmen’s nihilist, he has no reason to be there, and dies no matter what he does.
I like the overall message of the story, but am willing to acknowledge its flaws, it’s not perfect, but it’s so artistically well drawn, that’s it’s almost worth it on that alone.

I don't think royalties are the issue that Alan Moore has with Watchmen spin-offs. I say this because I've heard him say in interviews that he actually started refusing royalties - specifically in relation to the Watchmen movie. It seems like his problem is that he wants Watchmen to stay pure, as he intended it, without anyone doing new adaptations, interpretations, spin-offs or sequels i.e. he appears to be VERY precious about his work. And EXTREMELY bitter about the comics industry in general and DC in particular.

I didn't read the story, but based on your description (and having seen other, more spoilery videos on tbe specific event), it seems like Dr. Manhattan does not "see" the future, but rather simulates it in his mind. He knows the current state of every particle in the Universe, and can predict what happens going forward in time. But because he didn't know what be would do when finally confronting ol' Supes (yet knowing it will be a monumental decision with far reaching impact) he could no longer sustain his mental simulation of the universe past that point, at least until he decided how he'd respond.

Using a binary system in an everychangong landscape is especially if you include how vast the MULTIverse in fact pulling at enough threads youd find that he could either move to another timeline or just completely make the decisions wider. Thats a probability manipulation power and couldn't he atvsome extent nullify all possibilitoes pf him coming to blows woth superman or force him outvof the existing universe or take himself out of the existing universe and if hes powers have no mute point couldn't he just make the who situation just stop existing entirely. Or recreate a lighter version of him to observe hes pwn decision and thinking in real time tham go back in time( whatever that means to Manhattan) and choose the right one thats actually not put of reach as specified by hes power set.
If anything the stpry itself just exemplifoes a thought i had when i realised that Manhattan knew that hes gf ( i frgt her name) was going to cheat. Hes just messing around with timelines spacetimes and people for the same reason he made a pointless fortress on mars. Hes bored

Doomsday Clock is without a doubt an extremely well made series. But it felt so unnecessary. Watchmen was made because they had a story to tell, and it raised important moral/philosophical questions about the world.
Doomsday Clock on the other hand brought those characters back just for a kind of reboot of their universe, it seems. A very well made reboot, but it had so much untapped potential to be a work of art like its predecessor.

I understand these kind of cons people give to this story but at the same time i understand that those who focus on these things did not fully understand what Doomsday Clock is about. This is not the usual "big cosmic event", you can't just go criticize for the same things you may criticized other events as if you can could compare them, because they are completely different, they have a completely different purpose and Geoff focused on this purpose (and he did right). This is a story about Jon discovering the importance of Superman, the symbol and beacon of hope, in the Multiverse and how all of the events, all of the crisises and major events built around Superman because he is the most important character in DC comics and the one who inspires all. In an era of very cynical and dark stories and characters this is Geoff delivered: positiviy and hope in the form of a love letter to Superman. Thats the whole goal of Doomsday Clock and thats what it only really matters. Of course, reading this story is not easy and it takes a lot of knowledge from previous events to fully appreciate, but the story does make sense with Manhattan linking everything togheter. I hear of people wanting Superman and Manhattan have an actual fight as some were expecting but that would have been a very easy way to make this story fall into being trivial and unintersting and make it look like the average cosmic event. Also some of the main characters appearing are important to the story and this does not mean by affecting directly the story. Without Marionette and the Mime the ending would not have existed or would have made 0 sense. Even then, the "filler" characters are interesting and well written. There are many other things to say that make Doomsday Clock one of the best events/stories of the last years but im not gonna write it all here. I suggest to re-read again Doomsday Clock until completely understood/absorbed

How Dr Manhatten represents the comic creators, how they've shifted the focus of comics story, and how they cannot see the infinite possibilities but only on way or the other. It's simultaneously a commentary about industry fan service and service to the corporate bottomline. Doomsday Clock is pure metaphor and also connective continuity. I would go into further detail but I'm way too late to the party lol.

Just so you know, I watch these terrible ads only because I know you get a bit ore revenue when I do. I don't skip them because you have a channel that actually recommends stuff I'd read, and guides me away from the rubbish.

The most impressive thing about Doomsday Clock is that Geoff Johns thought he could follow up an Alan Moore story.

So Superman is basically Jesus. Which explains why I never cared for his stories, just as I never found Christian children's shows very entertaining.

Ha? Manhattan is Jesus, he’s a god, Superman is an inspiration, the guy that gets us out of the dark and teaches us how to be better. He’s a role model.

And PS you should respect creators opinions and what not
And also please do me a favour and separate the art from the artist
Unless the art is actually secretly terrible because of a certain political view a writer or director has that is not exceptional
Like Christopher Nolan's the sexiest Knight trilogy because Christopher Nolan is a sexist piece of crap who has some awful opinions with on feminism and why feminism shouldn't exist
I hate sexism but the way and I hate the people defend this overrated director
Unless if the artist and writer was born at a time we're certain awful views were acceptable.
