I love how it starts off with "just read Watchmen, and maybe the Before Watchmen stuff you're interested in" to fucking BATMANHATTEN...Alan Moore's already brewing up a powerful curse on DC, now he's supercharging it
Fantastic overview! I would add the first ‘Titans’ story arc ‘Titans Vol. 1: The Return of Wally West’ because in features a certain blue Watchmen character.
wow, incredible video, didn't even know about all this stuff and have been debating picking up scott snyder justice league, now I want to get all of these other ones too
Great video love how your giving the full reading order. As a new reader it can get really confusing for were to start and what to read next. Any chance you could do an dc or marvel omnibus reading order
It definitely feels like Johns' Golden Age/JSA book is set up to be the conclusion to all of his Watchmen work. The cover for issue 3 has the JSA tied to a clock 😂
Wow! You waited until the veeeeery end to mention the phenomenal HBO Watchmen miniseries! It was such a good, unique sequel to the original comic and I don't think it gets nearly enough credit. It's one of my favorite TV shows of the last decade. Also! The Rorschach series by Tom King and Jorge Fornes! It came out alongside Strange Adventures, also by Tom King, and a lot of people seemed to skip Rorschach, but that was another really good book! To call it "a Watchmen sequel" is definitely not doing it justice...it was a really good look at legacy and mental illness (because Tom King), wrapped up in a cool retro political thriller. I loved it
DC released, a while back, the Watchmen Companion. Parts of this book were originally published in the late 80s. This book gives a timeline of Watchmen events and the Alan Moore-approved RPG modules. Not required reading, but a lot of fun.
Just got my copy of Doomsday Clock today. Amazon didn't screw it up despite coming in one of those white and blue bags with a rip top. I'll make sure to add this video to my favorites so I can come back to it for later.
If anyone’s curious, here’s a combined Before Watchmen/Watchmen reading order (not recommend for first time Watchmen readers): Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1-4 Before Watchmen: Dollar Bill #1 Before Watchmen: Minutemen #5-6 Before Watchmen: Nite Owl #1 Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #1-3 Before Watchmen: Comedian #1-3 Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #4 Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1-4 Before Watchmen: Nite Owl #2-4 Before Watchmen: Comedian #4-6 Before Watchmen: Moloch #1 Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #5 Before Watchmen: Rorschach #1-4 Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #6 Watchmen #1-4 Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #1-4 Watchmen #5 Before Watchmen: Moloch #2 Watchmen #6-12
You forgot about the best Watchmen rip-off! ‘Rorschach’ by Tom King is BY FAR the best thing that came out of Watchmen’s legacy. It is (imo) the best thing King has ever written, incorporating real life comic book history (like Frank Miller and Steve Ditko) and Watchmen lore in a political murder thriller. It has more dialogue than action and it is very grounded, grim and realistic, so very different than anything else that DC puts out. It is completely separate from the DC universe, taking place entirely in the Watchmen world. Also, the art is great, very David Mazzuchelli-like. Watching the HBO sequel series beforehand is nice, but not necessary by any means, although I’d also recommend watching that, because both of these outings are far better than all the DC/Watchmen crossovers. Other than that, very nice video 👍
Honestly, at the time of the video, even though I’m a massive Tom King fan I hadn’t read it yet! Since then, I’ve read it twice and both times I feel like I don’t have enough background knowledge on the comic book writers to understand all the inside jokes so I think it’s amazing but I think it’s not for me yet until I do more history and deep diving on the characters of Steve Dio and his philosophies and Frank Miller and all of that stuff because it felt like hearing a hilarious inside joke that I didn’t know the context for.
@@TBATB just check their Wikipedia pages for a bit and you’ll be fine. King here personifies some themes and philosophies that are embedded in key entries in the comic book medium (thus fitting the theme of him writing a contribution to THE key entry in the comic book medium, namely Watchmen) and lets them play out in a thriller scenario, while also parodying and exaggerating these persons/philosophies, rather than him just telling a plain story. Yeah, it’s quite layered, so I understand it’s a bit niche and not for everybody. Apart from all this, I suspect it’s still a good read, but I can’t be sure because I took to the internet during my first read, which really helped me appreciate the story for what it was. Cool that you guys still respond to old videos btw 😁
It’s hard work but I still try to respond to every single comment 😂 my philosophy is if you spent the time to write something to me the least I can do is respond at least once back! To me the community side of TH-cam is the most important so I gotta respond with my community as much as I can!
I thought the batmanhatten thing was a joke lol, but now I realize he's real 😂I didn't know I shoud read doomsday clock before deathmetal, so thank you for that. So, we go this way? 1. Watchmen 2. Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan 3. Flashpoint 4. DC Universe: Rebirth Deluxe Edition 5. Batman/The Flash: The Button 6. Doomsday Clock: The Complete Collection 7. Flashpoint Beyond
Great video , i am looking to start reading comics with watchken series, So do I have to read the "before Watchmen" prequel to read before watchmen? Watchmen really need a read guide fore newbies lol , its so confusing
I read the first issue when it came out and I absolutely loved it but it’s so hard being a collect additions reader because I love Tom King and he’s my favorite writer so I should definitely pick up Rorschach but I’m also wanting to wait for a deluxe edition, so we can go next to watchmen on my bookshelf
This was a pretty early video for me! In the beginning it was hard to thread the line between context for a story and what someone would consider a spoiler. But if you watch more recent videos, I’m a lot better at it
Dammit, I have to buy Flashpoint Omnibus now because I have _Rebirth_ but not _The Button_ . Wait, does the Absolute Flashpoint have the same stuff as the Omnibus or not?
The flashpoint omnibus does not include rebirth or the button their separate books. Absolute flashpoint has everything that’s in the main flashpoint story, but none of the spinoffs if you want to complete flashpoint story with all the spinoffs, you should get the omnibus, but if you just want the main flashpoint storyline you can get the absolute.
@@TBATB I already have the Absolute but I haven't opened it yet (reading time is hard to come by these days). And it turns out I DO have _The Button_ I just haven't read it yet. So what else does the omnibus have that the Absolute doesn't?

I think if you’re looking for a sequel to watchmen it’s not great. But if you’re looking for a story about why Superman is still important in comics in a post watchmen landscape it’s amazing with incredible art!
Here's the correct reading order. The original comic, and nothing else. It was a complete series, had a start, middle and end and didn't need anything else. The rest doesn't matter. I recently read Doomsday Clock and the Watchmen parts were unneeded. They could have done that story without bringing in Watchmen, and they could just do new things instead of draining this awesome comic like a parasite. Read the original comic, ignore everything else.
I don’t think you’re supposed to read doomsday clock as a sequel to watchmen, I think doomsday clock is a Meta commentary on why Superman as a character still matters and is relevant in a post watchmen Comic Book landscape. If you watch the video, I clearly say that all you need to do is read watchmen, but I didn’t want to be a resource in case anyone didn’t want to read any of DC ridings watchmen’s corpse.
The whole point of Watchmen is that nobody has supernatural powers apart from Dr Manhattan. Watchmen is saying that the whole notion of super heroes is silly. So why on earth would these morons create a story where Dr Manhattan has a fight with Superman? How utterly ridiculous.
I think watchmen ushered in an era of “dark gritty” comics along with DKR. It’s more a meta commentary on optimism in comics versus despair in comics, but I totally understand and relate to your point
