    When we start out on our sewing journey, most of us place blind faith in commercial patterns and blithely cut into beautiful fabric, convinced that if we pick the size we think we are, the end result will fit beautifully. As time goes on it dawns on us that "one size fits all" is a big fat lie! We are all unique - even if the numbers seem right, the proportions may not be. And that's why it's important to test out every new pattern first - not necessarily making up the whole garment, but at least checking that the bodice works, or we can get the dress over our hips, or whatever... We all have to learn the hard way, I think. But the important thing is that we learn! Keep on keeping on, Drew! This was a step in the right direction 😊

      It took me so long to learn this lesson! And I still sometimes skip the mock up process and usually I end up very disappointed! I’m starting a new project today and because of this comment I am going to mock up the bodice!!! Thank you for watching! Taking the time to interact with my content and me! ♥️

    It is gorgeous dress. I ditched commercial patterns totally. May steal their designs but I draft my own stuff. I use Sure Fit Designs to make my ‘official’ block of my body. Then once I have my perfect fitting block, I design from there to guarantee a fit. So I get commercial designs to match MY block and not me always trying to fit their crazy never fit drafting. I am tired of basically having to redraft commercial patterns. May as well start from mine.
    I still I do mock ups. Learned that lesson too.
    Keep it up. Lovely to watch other vintage gals.

    That dress turned out so beautiful. It was obvious how much hard work went into it. You really are a great seamstress and your future mockups will only make you more amazing. I struggled with the idea of them for a long time as well because I thought they were a waste of fabric. It wasn’t until noel on costuming drama said she re-used hers that I reconsidered. Dresses become bodices and bodices become collars or facings ect. Until the pieces are to small to reuse. It really is a game changer.

    Whoa!!! What a video!!! I was deep into this video. When you said you do not read the directions, I raised my hand. 😁😁.
    I am officially lobbying for more sew along videos!!!
    Tech note: There are some people who cannot hear when a person is talking on top of a music piece. Consider using the music when you are sewing and pinning. When you are talking about next steps, keep it voice only.

    I bought this pattern also, but haven't started. You were not specific about the fitting problem, but I suspect it was either due to your choice to reduce the ease in the bust, or the tucks in the back took up more fabric than you expected. This video is 2 years old, and I am sure you have learned a lot since then. Have you tried this dress again? You are probably aware that patterns assume a "B" cup size, and alterations must be made if your are larger or smaller. Also, the exact amount of size of a tuck will depend on the fabric. It is very easy to end up with a dress that is too small. Perhaps a mock-up would not be necessary if you fitted the fabric onto your dress form before cutting. In other words, make the tucks before cutting out the pattern pieces. I would not have chosen a floral print, but the finished dress looks fine and I might try that also.

    • @SewSewDrew
      @SewSewDrew  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a really good pattern. Definitely a mock up and solid print fabric are needed. I cut it too small from the start. And did not do a FBA. At the time my weight was fluctuating so much I had not yet accepted my new size. About 6 months ago I lost enough weight to fit the dress but I have since gained it back. But I am becoming more comfortable in my skin and learning the adjustments needed for my body. It’s a journey. Sewing and Self love both ♥️

    Hi Drew, love the dress you did a great job. The fabric is beautiful for 3.00 per yard. Wow! Why don’t I ever find those bargains.
    I recently decided I wanted to start sewing again. I have been sewing for a lot of years, but I am very rusty. As always, I went to the back of the envelope, got my size and everything I needed to sew my project. Looked at the finished garment sizing and I sewed it up and it, of course, didn’t fit. So I tried again thinking it’s just the pattern. They all went together great but don’t fit.
    My answer to that is, I need to do a mock up. (Just like you) Ugh! Well I started watching this nice lady on TH-cam. Her name is Joy Bernhardt. She sews clothing, quilts tee-shirts for husband and she makes me laugh too. She is doing a sew along for a shirt and is going to demonstrate how to fit the patterns to you. I am excited to watch. She is not going to do it live but in sessions on her channel. I need help making something for myself that fits me and the shape I have now. Back in day, I could go off a pattern, not so much anymore. She did some pants and showed how she altered the pattern to her now shape too. Impressive! Along with that that, she had great info on sewing. I never knew what a clapper was until I watched. I was clapping for her but, that is not what she was talking about.
    Just a few pointers. The notches on the collars, they don’t tell you this, we’re to match at the shoulder seams. I just learned that and I have been sewing for a long time. (Learned that one from Joy)
    The button holes, since you have a zipper in the back, do the button holes but don’t cut them out. Most likely they are a decorative element.
    The zipper, plastic ones, there are regular zippers and invisible zippers. I couldn’t figure out why my zippers weren’t invisible. The reason for that, my duh moment, my plastic zipper didn’t say “invisible” on it. I thought all plastic zippers were invisible. NOT! How dumb was I???
    I hope you continue to sew the beautiful vintage garments, I love them too! I am always learning new things about sewing and thank God for TH-cam and all the wonderful sewists out there that have the courage to put themselves out there. BTW, you are a beautiful and talented woman, accent on “beautiful”.
    God bless and get better and keep sewing.❤❤❤❤😊

    • @SewSewDrew
      @SewSewDrew  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I will have to check out here channel. I totally get the zipper confusion I think I always just do mine as lapped zippers. And the collars thanks for that nugget my collars are always wonky. I love vintage garments and that’s definitely what I want to keep sewing and I hope you keep watching.
      ♥️Drew

    Still watching this video. Would suggest clear plastic storage containers for buttons and zippers. I separated my buttons according to size then usage, i.e., children’s, dressy, metal, etc.. Use plastic ziplock baggies for the second separation of buttons within clear plastic storage bin with lid. See Wawak for notions, and Benno Buttons, all online. Wawak will send you a monthly catalogue.

    If you don’t want to sew a test garment (which I dislike to do as well), it may be worthwhile to measure the garment finished size, and check it against your own body. For example, if you choose a sizing with bust size 42, make sure to emasure the finished garment bust circumference (the one with ease) to see if it makes sense that you could fit into it.

    • @SewSewDrew
      @SewSewDrew  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you know how much ease I need for wear in the bust?

  • @julieheath6335
    @julieheath6335 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure I agree with your new mockup stance. That just means guaranteeing that you have to make the dress twice.
    This was inexpensive fabric, which could be treated like a "wearable mockup". Since it didn't fit, you can just remake it in the same fabric with the fit adjustments.
    BTW Echoing the comments that the result looks really great.

    My favorite iron Is the Eliso iron. When you take your hands off of it it has feet that pops up so you never have to put it on its heel believe me it is a wrist saver. The only thing I don’t like it’s an automatic shut off. I don’t know why they have these automatic shutoffs other than you forgetting to turn off your iron however I wish they had a button that would turn the feature off or delay the turnoff say every 30 minutes, one hour, two hours because by the time you sew a seam or several seams and then get up to iron the irons cold or off and you have to wait for it to heat up. Well you’ll get water spots on everything. My other pet peeve is I hate buying fabric online. I searched for red and white polkadot found a site ordered it only to realize it was red and ivory. I searched for red and white not red and ivory.

    • @SewSewDrew
      @SewSewDrew  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve heard mixed reviews about the Eliso. I do sort of appreciate a auto shut off because my kids interrupt my swing so much and I often forget to shut it off. I also despise buying fabric online I’ve wasted a ton of my sewing budget that way. I’m getting better about buying swathes first but I’m always so impatient. That’s another thing I’m working on 😊. But thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. ❤️

    Nice format for a video - it suits you. Well done.
    Interested in what you find for a new iron. Mine is starting to dribble. Maybe this is a 'cold-call' sponsorship / slash / discount opportunity for you... from local sewing shops to the manufacturers themselves... because, why not ask...
    Suggestion for if you don't want a gravity feed iron - I have a vintage silver-plate martini shaker with a spout (keep an eye at Value Village) that I use to refill my iron water reserve. Sits completely self-contained on the ironing table and doesn't take up much room.
    Those bound button holes are brilliant. Never thought of using the buttonholer...
    I am So sorry the dress doesn't fit! She came out so well! Can you add panels or gores to increase some width (same fabric or something solid to match in? Piecing is period - the Great Grannies would approve? If not, glad it will have a good home.

      @@SewSewDrew I Know, right. Plus I think you really do have to go for the IV Stand storage - how else are you going to get that big plastic tub back and forth to the sink?
      Irons seemed to have topped out for pricing - it's nuts. This is the one time I wouldn't go for vintage (unless I knew someone who could rewire the thing).

Looks very delicate and light. :) Love the music, btw :)...that is too bad it didn't fit, bc I usually go by the "finished garment measurements" on the pattern pieces too, but then you have factor in the ease....hopefully it will work out next time. I have almost finished and I had the same outcome as you, It doesn't fit !!, so disappointing. I am thinking of letting some of the pleats out to make it a little `wider`. x

      Oh I’m sorry to hear that!! That pattern runs very small those measurements on the envelope can’t be accurate 😡

    Mock ups are difficult for me because I can’t afford to waste fabric.

      Same! I always felt that way too! I hate wasting fabric. Then I spent hours making something that doesn’t fit 😩😩 time is valuable too and You can find inexpensive fabric on fabricmart.com they have $2yard I can’t get the two days back 😩😩 oh and also I’ve seen people reuse mock up fabric so I’m going to try that as well. Mock-ups are not fun for me but I think they might be necessary. Sometimes. I won’t say always. If you feel comfortable with a pattern then I say proceed!! and then necessary changes can be made to the garment itself. Right? Is that a thing?

    What you can also do is take a dress that fits you and compare measurements to your pattern.

    Sell it! I would make this dress in a solid color raw silk noil to show off the back detailing. I can see your attraction to vintage patterns is based on attention to detail. Today’s patterns are so boring, no darting, no pleating, very few two piece sleeves, slits instead of vents at hemlines, and very few rolled three piece collars with notches. Oh, well!

      This is exactly it! The vintage style was definitely about those small details that hat give the design such personality!

    You did a great job however. Mock-ups are important, even for current patterns.
