CLA Nx brings Grammy-winning mixer Chris Lord-Alge's famed Mix LA studio control room to any pair of headphones - so you can monitor reliably on headphones and make better mixing decisions anywhere, anytime.
After faithfully modeling Chris’s console and classic hardware gear in previous plugins, Waves and CLA have finally teamed up to replicate Chris’s room acoustics and monitoring system. The CLA Nx plugin combines Waves Nx spatial audio technology with precise measurements of Mix LA, to model the acoustic response of Chris’s mix room inside any set of headphones.
Built by premier studio designer Vincent Van Hoff, Mix LA has been Chris Lord-Alge’s studio since 2008. This is the room he has trusted to deliver mixes for Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, Muse and countless top artists.
Chris’s complete monitoring setup is now available over any headphones via CLA Nx. This includes the acoustic response of Chris’s NS10-modeled CLA-10 nearfield monitors, coupled with his subwoofer system; his custom-built Ocean Way farfield speakers, modified to his specs; and even the boombox model he relies on to check how his mixes will translate to small-speaker devices.
    With CLA Nx you can:
    - Trust your headphone mixes to translate reliably to diverse sound systems
    - Reference your tracks on an expertly calibrated monitoring environment
    - Make better decisions on headphones about mix depth, stereo imaging, low-end response, reverb amount & more
If your room doesn’t have great acoustic treatment - now you can monitor through CLA’s expertly designed Mix LA acoustics on your headphones. Even if you do have a well-treated mix room - CLA Nx gives you another great reference environment to check your mixes.

After years of being frustrated with the quality of mixes, I decided to give this a shot as well with zero expectations going in. I just completely re-did a track I was working on entirely through this and then played it on my studio monitors and my Mac speakers and BAM it translated really well! I am genuinely very happy now - a lot of my frustrations with mix quality have disappeared and I can just focus on the music and how good it sounds to my ears without worrying too much about translation.
Now, I don't think it makes sense to use _only_ this plugin, but used in combination with a reference track and switching occasionally to the boombox, mains and my own studio monitors (in a amateur acoustically treated living room space), this really is a game changer - for me at least. I will note that the EQ correction is really important and I happened to have the Sennheiser HD600s, which is supported, so worked well for me.

I recently used the Abbey Road NX plugin to make a mock drum room mic (stereo). I just bussed the drums tracks I wanted into separate group and put the AR plugin on them. I also put a de esser on there to help tame the cymbals but overall it worked very well.

i put the CLA NX on Parallel track in the studio rack and blended it like 10% and paralleled the Nx to an L1 track with about 5-7%, and wow a very cool trick, i just held my head still for a test bounce, it sounds like god touched it, very sick with mains speaker mode

Another great advancement in home recording and mixing. I am a big fan of the Abbey Road version and was planning to demo the Blackbird version, glad to see a CLA version. The number of true game changers we have had in the past 10 years or so; from the UA Apollo, to synth and piano plugins, to modeling microphones, and now to a mixing setup; just incredible!

Love this plugin. Bought it as soon at it dropped. My Comments/opinion on this technology: I'm old school and been in some really great rooms and some really terrible ones. Now, I can have great rooms anywhere anytime. We use IR(s) for reverbs etc, why not use IR(s) from world class studios to create spaces people can mix in. Logical next step. Hell, I like listening to my mixes in CLA's, or Ocean Way or Abbey Road any time I want. These plugins are good/great and it only gets better from here. I'd say check it out and see if your mixes translate to your liking.

If you don't have any of the headphones listed you can listen to music you know first until you get familiar with the sound. That's what I did with the Abbey Rd version. Sort of like knowing your studio monitors before doing any mixing. I like having the option of software like this. It is less expensive then buying more monitors.

Yes, but just as the acoustics of a room support the the frequencies of a recording, they also support the frequencies of reverb, because it is also a complexity of reflected frequencies. So I think it makes since that a software room simulation would bring the reverb into focus as well, rather than the softwares simulated ambience detracting from the reverb. I think this suggests that this software is successful in what it sets out to accomplish. I like it. I have Abbey Road 3 which I quite like as well.

I’ve been unfortunate enough to only be mixing on headphones since I started a few years ago. So I have been using the Abbey Road AND the Nashville plug ins with sonarworks after them and flick between the too and I am totally used to my headphones and mixing through those plug ins. So I will be getting the trial of this for now to flick between the three. Been loving the Abbey Road version and I also don’t like what I hear when going to just flat headphones. Great review and walkthrough of this plugin Warren! Great work as always!

I have the abbey roads one. I think it sounds good. I would like to get this one and the Nashville one soon. I think it would be cool if they work on other environments, such as, mastering rooms, inside various cars, and concert halls, kind of like Steven Slates headphone modeling. I’m sure they are working on it or will soon. Thanks for your review!!

What I wonder is if the CLA Ocean Way speakers sound like the Nashville plugin....(but the set of speakers sized between the two Nashviille choices...the 1 and the 5s). I like the mains on this plug as I do Abbey Road, because it extends the headphones lower, it seems. But I like the Nashville plug over Abbey Rd. This will be a good purchase for the big Ocean Way mains in chris' studio and the boombox.

Also, not sure if you noticed. When you compared the plugin in and out, your ambience knob was on the minimum, so there was no much ambience added. I think it's best to compare at all settings on their default position and only reducing the level if it clips. But other than that, great video!

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, if you watched the video you'll see I went to 60% which is how I like it to sound. When you try the demo you could set it how you would like it to be. There's nothing to clip in that section, it's just how much room ambience you prefer, I preferred it at 60%. Many thanks

    Hi Warren,
how did the mix you did with the plugin translate on your real speakers?
For me the head tracking sounded amazing and the over spill from the left and right channel to each other, made it much more pleasant to listen on headphones.
I'm just not sure about the headphone EQ. But I guess that I would have to try with my own headphones.

But I have calibrated my monitors/room with that Sonarworks mix what came with this Sonarworks studio edition, so guess that should help too if I want to use my own monitors, exactly why I bought it to calibrate my headphones and my monitors/room, but there will be most of the timr when I can't blast my monitors and keep making music nonstop because other people will hear that too on my own apartment.

For the past few years, I’ve been mixing on speakers, but I still check on the 7506. I REALLY like the simulated room, but I feel like I would need to “learn” how to hear it…I wish I could add the “room” to my iPhone so I could listen to commercial releases in the “room.” That would be ideal.

Always speaking about crossfeed and flattening headphones there is a nice video with Bob Katz about the good results using the Harman eq curve on headphones, but it is not clear how to use in practise, because he supposed we know the frequency response of our headphones and how to compensate (reverse curve ? Linear or minimum phase eq ), because not only the eq but also the phase response can play a crucial role for some frequencies, what do you think ? the last bottleneck could be, with minor weight probably, the head size and earlobo shape and dimension. Finally last game hw toys for pc is a vibrating tool to feel the bass with the cheast too, the future of the next Nx technology ? CIAO :-D

Hi, it would be interesting to compare two mix of the same song, one done with real speakers and the other one usinf this plugin or other similar as well (Sienna, Vrmbox, morphit+CanOpener, ecc..). This is the real thing everyone liked to buy a plugin like this wants to know. If otherwise it's only a matter to overcome the ear fatigue and to have anothe tool to listen detail and make decision there are many vst, also free, useful for this: Ambeo orbit, Tb Isone and many Others, it is possible also to calibrate the Head for the HRTF, an so on...

Come on Waves, guess which target audience is missing out MASSIVELY when it comes to studio emulation on headphones... mobile users! I have an iPaid Air 4 and, apart from a "tinny" room emulation (an auv3 called VirtualRoom), there is nothing to mix reliably through.
Actually, I lie - there is corrective EQ via ToneBoosters Morphit, but we need something like CLA Nx.
Note: it would defeat the purpose to route my iPad through my laptop. ;)

I can't seem to find a reason to mix on headphones unless you have real good studio headphones and have to keep it down. But the biggest issue is the separation of the left and right channel as it enters your ears and gets to your brain. In addition to that, this plugin only makes sense when you have the exact headphone model they use in this plugin. Because it's an emulation it is only emulating a room we all probably never have been in. So what do you want to know? Your own room, or a room you don't know? Also this emulation is basically just an EQ that you slam as the first insert on your 2-track. I didn't like the Nashville Plugin and I'm not up for this. It's good to see that WAVES invest in new technology and do research, but for the average home based producer, a good room or a paid Mix-Engineer will take us further. Just my 2 cents
PS: The Sub on the NS-10 is strange too. If you could turn the Sub off, ok. But why put a Sub on the Yamahas in the first place? You wouldn't work a Auratone centered in the middle with a Sub. The NS-10 are supposed to sound mid, less lows and less highs.
PPS: Thanks Warren for the work and the testing. You guys are awesome. Auf Wiedersehen :)

That isn't the Boombox at the top, that is his EMT 246. The Boombox is the black thing with speakers either side, in the rack directly below it 👍🏻
I mix on Yamaha MSP5's at a low level in an untreated room (my flat's living room) and have ATH-50x's to check the bass, as obviously the former miss a lot of it. I've tried this and think I'm definitely going to get it - do my main mixing on MSP5's, then over to the free Acustica Sienna HOG Sun218 Peasure preset for the low end, the CLA-10's for that mid focus, Boombox for high end, then the Mains to bring it all together. Just listening to reference tracks this way has been incredibly enlightening.

I really don't know why you would want something like this. Even if you use headphones. I would think it would make it even harder to mix on them. I have a good room and monitors that are flat within 2 db from 30-20,000 hz, in room response with no correction. I am guessing even the pro's don't have that. With my subwoofer, down to 14 hz.

This plugin is pretty mid and bass heavy. I did a few reference mixes and could hear the difference but I know my headphones so well that I can get similar results without the plugin. To an extent I’m still uncertain how much value this adds, saying that for 29 biscuits it’s pretty cheap. The boom box is in the rack :)

  • @ZSMstudio
    @ZSMstudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

For me - I'm using the Abbey Road version for reference since it was released - the "problem" is all in what you pointed out, Warren: the studio ambient gives you the "illusion" that you have... well, "ambient space" in your mix, while it's not. So.... useful for reference, for me, as another tool to check the mix, as the car, phone, etc. But I can't mix directly in it.
